Do you agree or disagree with the state’s Safe Harbor Law, which blocks state agencies from assisting in interstate investiga tions that could hold someone criminally or civilly liable for re ceiving abortion ser vices in Connecticut, and why? Here’s how the the candidates in the 34th Senate District, which comprises Walling ford, North Haven, Durham and East Haven, responded: Alida Cella, Democrat 1. “Pro-life activists have spent decades focused on taking away a woman's right to choose, rather than why a woman might want to choose to end a pregnancy. If this was real ly about saving lives, their fight would have focused on that. If there was universal access to birth control with out a prescription; if there was universal maternal care, and it didn't cost upwards of

The Record-Journal recently polled area candidates run ning for state House and Senate for their views on the Supreme Court decision overturning Roe vs. Wade, as well as earlier passage of the state’s “Safe Harbor” law. Candidates were asked the 1.following:Wheredo you stand on the Supreme Court’s deci sion to overturn Roe v. Wade and why?

“These days, people are not moti vated to get their license,” said Jay Alvarez, owner of Shield Driving School in Meriden. “The younger driver, they don’t want their li cense. They don’t want that re sponsibility. A lot of the parents are forcing their kids to get their li cense at 16 because they need them to get a job, they need them to go to practice, they need them to go to school.”

From A8 Teen drivers $10,000 to have a baby if you are uninsured or un derinsured; if there were universal day care, so mothers could continue their schooling or careers after their baby was born and maintain their earning potential; if the minimum wage were raised to a true living wage level so that a single mother with no skills could afford to support her family on her own - these would absolutely reduce the number of abortions sought. Instead, this ruling has determined that wom en with the resources or support who want an abor tion will still be able to get one, albeit cost them more; and women and their fami lies without, will be either seeking potentially unsafe alternatives, illegal alterna tives, or be subscribed to a continuing spiral of poverty that will be ever harder to escape from - for them selves and the children they are being forced to Ihave.don't believe pro-life

While the change in student demographics hasn’t impact ed revenue, Dufour said Next Street has had to change its curriculum to better suit old er students. “Teaching a 22 year old re quires a different approach than teaching a 16 year old, and so we are constantly evolving our curriculum and our staff training...” Dufour said. Driving safety Ira Caplan, co-owner of Lib erty Driving School in Meri den, said the lack of younger students has not changed the way he teaches. However, he has made his students more aware of the dangers of reck less driving. “There’s more reckless drivers out there right now,” Caplan said. “I think due to COVID there were less peo ple on the road and people were driving worse without any consequences. Insurance you may not realize you need Insurance is a product for the “what ifs” in life. A good insurance policy can reduce the financial impact of an adverse event, mitigate fi nancial losses, provide sta bility, and, offer some peace of mind during difficult Sometimes.insurance coverage is deemed so important, it’s mandated by law. But there is also lesser-known insur ance coverage worth explor ing. Consider these optional coverages to trade uncer tainty for financial protec tion. Homeowner riders. If you have a mortgage, homeown er insurance is required. A basic homeowner policy provides standard reim bursement after a deductible for approved claims due to theft or damage to your property, dwelling, personal possessions, and liability. Such coverage, however, may not be sufficient. If you have valuable art or jewelry in your home, a rider can ensure appropriate reim bursement if these items are stolen or damaged. Consider a rider to offset the liability of owning a swimming pool or trampoline, for example. Other common riders cover water damage, identity restoration, and business as sets (if you conduct business in your home). Renters insurance. If your personal property is stolen or damaged at a rented house or apartment, you may be out of luck unless you carry your own renters insurance. Look for a policy that includes liability cover age, which provides financial protection in case someone gets hurt at your rented resi dence. Travel insurance. You may want to explore travel insur ance before an international trip. A policy that covers un expected cancellations is re assuring when planning an expensive vacation with non-refundable reservations. A policy that provides inter national medical coverage can be a real lifesaver since most U.S. health insurance plans do not reimburse for care provided outside the country. Lara Hajek, a breast cancer survivor, has been a model for ArtBra since 2018. She said it’s an experience like no other because it pushes her out of her comfort zone. “I don’t even wear a bikini to the beach,” she said. “So you’ve got to wear these amazing art bras and you just walk the runway and have fun with it.”

By Cris Record-JournalVillalonga-Vivonistaff SOUTHINGTON Cheers and hollers erupted from guests at the ArtBra Fundraiser hosted by After the Storm Inc. as the first model came strutting down the runway in a bra and skirt outfit inspired by the Roman huntress “Diana.”

She continued enter taining the crowd as the auc tioneer began. “This isn’t an art bra. It’s an art outfit,” he exclaimed while enticing au dience members to raise the bidding, which soon reached a winning bid of $550. All the bras were created and donated by local artists. From a purple unicorn bra to a bra with working toy he licopter fans, the elaborate, wearable art was inspired by the strength and courage of cancer survivors. She appeared stunned by the victory when she ap peared before a cheering crowd of supporters in her hometown of Greenwich. “We’re making history here. It’s really exciting,” she said. Levy thanked Trump for last week’s promising, endorsement,“Iwillnot let you down. Thank you for having my Klarides, back.”who supports abor tion rights and certain gun control measures, told her supporters that she had called to congratulate Levy, who ran TV ads accusing the veteran state legislator of “not being one of us.” Levy and Lumaj, who both op pose abortion rights, had ar gued that a conservative candidate was needed to de feat Democratic U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal in KlaridesNovember.argued her moder ate positions on issues like abortion would persuade Connecticut voters in the general election to oust Blu menthal, who has been in office since 2011. She fo cused her campaign heavily on economic issues, includ ing inflation and gas prices. Levy, 65, came with her fam ily from Cuba to the U.S. in 1960. Her grandfather was president of the VertientesCamaguey Sugar Company in Havana. She graduated from Brown University in 1978 and worked in the fi nancial industry, including as a commodities trader at Philbro Salomon. She was a relative unknown when she first jumped into the race. Lumaj said Tuesday night Trump’s late endorse ment “absolutely” affected the contest and gave Levy the advantage. “This is a huge victory for President Trump in our state,” he told WTNH in an interview from a restaurant in Norwich where his sup porters gathered. “That changed everything. The pri mary voters have spoken. They still support the presi dent regardless of who the endorsed candidate is.” Connecticut hasn’t elected a Republican to the U.S. Sen ate since Lowell P. Weicker Jr., who served from 1971 to Art1989.Shilosky, a Republican and former first selectman of Colchester, said he doesn’t believe that nominating a candidate endorsed by Trump would finally end that drought for the GOP. He also questioned whether Trump’s endorsement would help Levy. “No, I don’t think that’sa good mix,” Shilosky said out side a polling place where he voted for Klarides. “I think the Republicans in the state of Connecticut are more moderate than he (Trump) is. He’s too far out. People don’t relate to that. I don’t.” See Primary, A17 shop for fun, personalized necklace ties, bow ties, and pocket squares to fit any occasion or style!

Ter rie Wood, a Republican from RapiniDarien.has called for tighten ing ID requirements and cleaning the state’s voter rolls. He says he is suspi cious about voter fraud es pecially in the state’s largest city of Bridgeport where var ious state and local officials have been charged over the years with election fraud from allegedly conspiring to fraudulently obtain public campaign funds, to allegedly falsifying voter registration applications and absentee ballots applications.
