Attendees were asked to bring non-perishable food donations to benefit the North Haven Food Bank, and some 200 items were collected. “Last year we were unable to host any post-session events in our community as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, which See Cookout, A6

The latest wave of the virus and misinformation about its spread has prompted Hartford HealthCare to relaunch its COVID-19 hotline, hospital officials said. Officials said the hotline will be staffed by clinicians who can answer questions about masks, vaccinations and anything else related to the pandemic. Officials said they are hoping that presenting the facts and responding to concerns will lead to higher vaccination rates.

The state’s 359,363 positive COVID-19 tests since March 2020 is equivalent to about 10% of the state’s population.
The new figures were released as New Haven became the first municipality in the state to implement a mask mandate for indoor spaces. Lamont last week granted towns and cities the authority to require masks. New Haven’s mandate requires masks be worn inside at businesses, bars, restaurants, and theaters.

North Haven dentist charged with fraud
In Brief Bird feeder warning Residents are being urged to take down bird feeders and report sightings of sick or dead songbirds as a mysterious illness continues to afflict birds throughout the country. Symptoms that have been reported in cases outside the state include swelling and discharge around the eyes and neurological symptoms such as head tremors, difficulty or inability to stand, and excessive vocalization. The condition appears to primarily affect songbirds, including grackles, blue jays, European starlings and American robins, according to DEEP. Hummingbirds may also be affected and feeders for them should be taken down as well. The recommendation to take down bird feeders is out of a concern that the illness could be contagious and birds congregating at feeders and bird baths could act as places where it spreads.

Lawmakers push for updated food labeling requirements On Wednesday, Aug. 4, House Appropriations Committee Chairwoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT), House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ), and Senators Richard Blumenthal (DCT), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) and Ed Markey (DMA) introduced the Food Labeling Modernization Act of 2021 in their respective chambers that would update front-of-package food labeling requirements, require updates to the ingredient list on packaged foods, and apply consumer friendly labeling requirements. “The Food Labeling Mod-
ernization Act will give food labeling requirements an important and long-overdue overhaul,” said DeLauro. “Food labels should give a clear, accurate, and fair representation of the product, and that is just not the case right now. This commonsense bill would provide more information to consumers—information that is vital as people make choices about what food to buy for their families.” In an effort to help consumers select healthy products, the Food Labeling Modernization Act’s signature initiative will direct the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) to es-
MONEY MATTERS
Are you financially prepared to raise an athlete? By Jeff Jolly
Organized sports are a great way for kids to stay active, make friends and develop character. But there’s no denying that the cost of childhood athletics is expensive. And while you may not be raising an Olympic-caliber athlete, if your child is one of the 45 million kids between age 5 and 18 who play an organized sport in the U.S., you know about the financial commitment all too well. Expenses can add up quickly, and it can be easy to lose track of the cost for your child to be on the team. What can you do to feel in control of athletic costs? First and foremost, create a budget for each sport and season your child plays with these five expenses in mind:
The bill will also strengthen current law to target trends in marketing that confuse or mislead consumers when they are attempting to compare food products. Specifi-
cally, the legislation will require new guidelines for the use of the word “healthy.” “This bill will bring muchneeded clarity to food labels so Americans can make informed, healthy decisions for themselves and their families,” Blumenthal said. “Current labels are a confusing maze and fail to provide important, useful informa-
tion to consumers. The Food Labeling Modernization Act will ensure serving sizes are updated, allergens are clearly labeled, and nutritional information is transparent, giving people the tools they need to make healthier choices and avoid misleading, deceptive pitches and promotions.” — Press Release

Schools Student vaccinations As schools across Connecticut resume class, the Connecticut Department of Public Health is reminding parents to make sure their child's immunizations are up to date. The pandemic caused many children to fall behind on their pediatric and adolescent vaccinations, increasing the potential for outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases. COVID-19 has reminded us of the importance of vaccinations to protect children from preventable illnesses. Some children may even be lacking vaccines required for school entry in the fall. As a reminder, adolescents 12 years and older are eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine and can receive their adolescent vaccinations at the same visit. For more information regarding the Connecticut Vaccine Program, call 860-509-7929, email dph.immunizations@ ct.gov, or visit portal.ct.gov.

COMMENTARY: Essential gear for a family road trip By Caitlin Houston Special to the Record-Journal
Grocery store plastic bags
Raise your hand if you enjoy taking road trips with kids? For me — they are fun but extremely stressful. There are essentials for a road trip with kids that can make your travel more enjoyable though. It is so important to be prepared for anything — car sickness, potty accidents, hunger, thirst, and boredom.
I always save our grocery store plastic bags to use for trash or soiled clothes on a family road trip (or plane ride). It is easier to toss a vomit covered shirt into a plastic bag, tie up the top, and place it on the floor until you get home.
We took our first long road trip with our daughters recently. It took us 9.5 hours to drive to Ohio and 10 hours to drive back. I would like to say the trip was uneventful, but during the last hour of our drive, Annabelle vomited all over herself, her toys, and her car seat. Thankfully I had plastic bags ready for our oldest, who gets car sick, as well has cleaning wipes.
From dirty hands to juice box spills, it is helpful to have a big container of wet wipes to clean any messes your children may create. I also stock up on Lysol Wipes for the big messes, like vomit, and hand sanitizer for quick disinfecting after a bathroom break at a rest stop.
If you’re going on a road trip with kids, don’t forget these essentials for any kind of emergency.

Free admission for children at 90-plus museums his larger plan to use a portion of the recovery funding Connecticut is receiving to provide children and families with engaging summer enrichment and learning experiences. His proposal was approved by the state legislature in the biennial state budget that he signed into law.
Under the finalized program, all Connecticut children age 18 and under – plus one accompanying adult – will receive free admission to any of the participating museums, including historic house museums, historic sites, historical societies, art museums, children’s museums, science centers, special-interest museums, natural history museums, university museums, arboretums/ botanical gardens, and zoos. Some of the participants include the Connecticut Science Center, Connecticut’s

The full list of participating museums is available at CTSummerMuseums.com. “This program provides a unique opportunity for children to take advantage of the world-class museums and attractions offered in Connecticut, while having both a fun and educational experience,” Lamont said. “Museums are centers of ex-
