Schools make mental health a priority

While the pandemic has put additional stress on people’s mental health, area school administrators say their dis tricts have always put a fo cus on students’ and staff members’ social and emo tional wellness, even before COVID-19.

“Climate and mental health have been components of our strategic plan for several years, well before COVID,” said Aimee Turner, assistant superintendent for special education for Wallingford schools. “Many of the strate gies and supports in place now were in place prior to COVID. Although we have seen an increase in the number of students strug gling emotionally, the sup port and systems we have had in place continue to be appropriate.”

In 2021, the Centers for Dis ease Control found that “more than a third (37%) of high school students report ed they experienced poor mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic, and 44% reported they persis tently felt sad or hopeless during the past year.”

“I think since the pandemic, anxiety has been on the rise,” said Jeff Solan, super intendent of Cheshire schools.

STRONG SHOWING Farm to host fall festival

North Haven's Ravello Farm, 81 Half Mile Road, will host its first Oktoberfest on Satur day, Oct. 1.

In addition to hayrides and pumpkin-picking, the fami ly-friendly event will feature music and a variety of local vendors selling honey, handmade soaps, beef jerky, mums, and more.

There is no fee to attend.

Rich DiPalma, who is em ployed as a teacher, has overseen Ravello Farm since 2021.

The property is about six and a half acres.

Along with working to ac commodate 27 families as part of the farm’s communi ty-supported agriculture program, DiPalma also runs a farm stand.

The community-supported agriculture program helps the farm with operating costs over the winter. In re turn, community members who participate receive a regular share of produce throughout the growing sea son.

DiPalma said weather condi tions over the past couple of months caused many of his pumpkins and winter squash to rot.

Also, he said it has been dif ficult being back in the classroom while still manag ing the farm.

The 33rd Robert M. Neubauer Cross Country Invitational took place Sept. 14 at Sheehan High School in Wallingford. Jonathan Law's Liam Fedigan bested the field, shattering the meet record with a time of 16:44. “There’s a lot of stress and sometimes it's social anxiety after coming out of the isola tion,” said Solan. “I think we’ve certainly seen an in crease in anxiety which is why things like physical fit ness, being involved physi cally, a healthy diet, taking care of your body and also your mind supports that. If that is not enough for you, we have other resources as well.”

Solan said in Cheshire’s classrooms there are desig nated periods of time known as “mindful moments.”

“Students are taught how to focus on their breathing, clear their mind, be present in the moment,” Solan said.

In partnership with Con necticut Behavioral Health, Southington Public Schools was able to develop a dis trict-wide behavior team. Dr. Ryan Loss of Connecticut Behavioral Health is spear heading this project, accord ing to Rebecca Cavallaro, di rector of pupil services for Southington Public Schools.

“He works closely with our district staff and administra tors to look at providing sup port to school teams and to students who are struggling with either behavioral con cerns or any issues relating to mental health that might impact them during the school day,” Cavallaro said.

The district uses a program called RULER, which is cre ated by the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, to “infuse the principles of emotional intelligence into the immune system of pre-K to 12 schools, informing how leaders lead, teachers teach, students learn and families support students,” according to its website.

“It’s really focusing on the emotional wellbeing of stu

dents and staff in the school environment, making sure that we’re checking in on how people are feeling,” Cavallaro siad.

Wallingford elementary schools use a program called Second Step, a “social emo tional curriculum that intro duces children to identifying and managing their emo tions, navigating social situa tions as well as citizenship,” Turner said.

In the upper grade levels, the schools use the program, Sandy Hook Promise.

“This program focuses on students and adults support ing each other to create a safe, violence-free environ ment,” Turner said.

When it comes to focusing on mental health in schools, Turner said a student is suc cessful if they feel a connec tion to their school commu nity.

“Research shows students are more available to learn when they feel connected to school,” Turner said.

“When students’ mental health needs are being met they are able to build posi tive relationships with peers, increase students’ capacity to learn, experience positive

social experiences, enhance their creativity and find aca demic success.”

Therefore, since the pan demic, Cavallaro said some people are struggling to reengage with others, which is something that all members of the school community need to understand. “I think as much as we’re getting closer to feeling back to nor mal, there still is that under lying sort of feeling that peo ple have had over the past few years and I think it’s im portant that staff are aware of that and students and that administration is there to re ally support staff when they’re feeling that way so that we’re all aware that we’re really in it for each other and we want a positive environment for our stu dents and staff to learn and work in,” Cavallaro said.

Lauren Mancini-Averitt, president of the Meriden Federation of Teachers and ninth grade world history teacher at Maloney High School, said that districts can always improve on their mental health awareness ef forts.

“We’re trying,” ManciniAveritt said. “This is an issue that is statewide and nation

wide. I still think we can all be better on them I think some countries in the world do it better than us from a country standpoint. I do think we can always do bet ter, so with that said, we have a lot more hands on deck per se. We have a lot more school counselors, we have a lot more psycholo gists, we have a lot more training.”

“This Oktoberfest is our grand finale for the farm stand,” DiPalma said. “We just want to provide something fun for the people who have supported us.”

The Oktoberfest will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct. 1.

DiPalma recommends carpooling since parking at the farm is limited.

Is ‘lifestyle creep’ threatening your financial future?

As your income increases, your spending habits may have a tendency to go up as well. This is a phenomenon known as lifestyle creep. Though it’s a natural inclina tion to want to spend more as your funds go up, it’s impor tant that it doesn’t impede your ability to protect your long-term financial security. If you’re making more money,

but your expenses are notice ably higher than they were be fore, or your savings seem stuck in neutral, it may be time to reset your spending habits. Here are three steps to help you avoid or reverse lifestyle creep:

Assess your current spending patterns

One way to identify whether lifestyle creep is a reality for you is to compare your ex penses and savings strategies to a point in the past say one

or five years ago. Review checking account statements from then compared to those of today. You should be able to detect whether, in that time, your spending has changed significantly. Also, review how much you are putting away in savings your bank accounts for emergency needs, your re tirement accounts, and toward any other savings goals. Has that number improved or de clined in the past year? This can tell you a lot about whether lifestyle creep is threatening your future goals.

Establish a “target” budget and stick with it

Creating a monthly budget provides you with guideposts on how much you should spend. It also helps you priori tize what’s important. Lifestyle creep often occurs when we become too fast and loose with our money, spend impulsive ly, or simply get careless about spending. Budgeting can help you put parameters around what is justifiable spending and what expenses will most likely prove unfulfilling.

Increase savings where possible

One primary reason to investi gate the potential for lifestyle creep is to determine ways to enhance your savings strategy. If you are employed and can participate in an employer’s retirement plan, be sure to do so. If the employer offers matching contributions, it’s important to fully capitalize on

it. An ideal target is to set aside at least 10 percent of your gross income in retirement savings. That can include a Roth IRA, where you can build a source of retirement income that can qualify for tax-free withdrawals. Also, be sure to boost your savings when you receive a raise or, at least, to keep pace with inflation.

Having a financial plan in place is a good way to put the damper on lifestyle creep. An up-to-date plan can help you establish a savings regimen that will keep current spend ing in check and keep your long-term goals on track. Your financial advisor can help.

Lamont holds 10-point lead over Stefanowski

Gov. Ned Lamont has a 10 percentage point lead over Republican Bob Stefanowski in an Emerson College Polling survey released Tuesday morning, providing the first public polling snapshot of the Connecticut gover nor’s race since May.

The survey of 1,000 voters conducted for WTNH and The Hill between Sept. 7 and 9 found Lamont leading Stefanowski, 48.5% to 38.4%, with 9% undecided two months before the election Nov. 8. Four percent favored someone else.

Emerson’s poll shows little movement from its survey conducted on May 10 and 11, which found Lamont lead ing Stefanowski, 51% to 38%, with 12% undecided.

The new survey comes as voters are bombarded by tele vision advertising by two well-financed campaigns and several super PACs, mostly offering harshly negative as sessments of the first-term Democratic governor and his Republican challenger.

Emerson found Lamont to be weathering the ad assault better than Stefanowski. The first-term Democratic gov ernor’s favorable/unfavorable rating was 55% to 40%, while voters split on the GOP challenger, 45% to 45%.

Asked who was more trustworthy, 56.7% chose Lamont and 43.3% named Stefanowski.

Advancing Connecticut, a super PAC funded by the Re publican Governors Association, recently upped its bud get for attacks on Lamont by $500,000, to $1.5 million. CT Truth PAC, funded by two businessmen, has spent $1.6 million opposing Lamont.

Marine navigation course begins Oct. 12

Press Release

An in-person, eight-week class offered by New Haven Sail & Power Squadron, part of America's Boating Club, starts Wednesday, Oct. 12 at West Marine, 33 Business Park Drive, Branford. Class es will be held Wednesdays, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., through Dec. 7.

This course covers the ba sics of coastal and inland navigation for the recre ational boater with GPS as a primary navigation tool while covering enough of traditional techniques so the student will be able to find his/her way even if their GPS fails.

From A11 Poll

The Democratic Governors Association has invested $2.75 million in its own su per PAC, Stronger CT, for ads attacking Stefanowski.

Lamont benefits from a con siderable gender gap in the Emerson poll, with an 18point lead among women. His lead among men was less than 3 points.

A Quinnipiac University poll released on May 26 had La mont with a narrower lead, 51% to 43%.

Connecticut’s last three gu bernatorial races were clos er: Democrat Dannel P. Mal loy won an open seat in 2010 by less than a percentage point and was reelected in 2014 by 2.6 points. Lamont won by 3 points in 2018.

WTNH says the results re leased Tuesday are the first of three from the same Sept. 7-9 survey.

The Emerson poll found vot ers divided when asked, “Do you think things in Con necticut are generally head ed in the right direction or do you feel the state is on the wrong track?” They fa vored “right direction,” 52.6% to 47.4%.

High inflation generally dis advantages incumbents, but Lamont has benefitted from a turnaround in state fi nances boosted by higher tax revenues and federal aid during the pandemic. Lamont took office facing a

projected deficit, but recent surpluses allowed the ad ministration to cut taxes this year and pay down Con necticut’s unfunded pension liability, among the worst in the U.S.

His latest ad shares credit with the legislature’s GOP minority: “Working togeth er that’s how we turned a huge budget deficit into record surplus, paid down our debt, saving our kids and grandkids billions.”

Using different methodolo gies, Quinnipiac and Emer son each get accuracy grades of A- from the politi cal data site, FiveThir tyEight.com. The grades are based on how closely polls conducted within 21 days of an election came to the ac tual results.

In 2018, Emerson was off by just two-tenths of a point in calling the victory margin of U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy’s re election, less so in Lamont’s first win. It had Lamont with a 6-point advantage, double the actual margin.

Quinnipiac relies on live in terviews with voters on land lines and cell phones, while Emerson collects its data us ing automated questions to likely voters on landlines and cell phones, plus an on line panel.

The margin of error in the Emerson survey is plus or minus 3 percentage points.

After all the watering, weeding, spraying and harvesting, the North Haven Junior Garden Club was in for a special treat recently – it was time to harvest watermelons. There were four watermelons in all, and the first two were delicious (the third was over-ripe and not edible, and the fourth was too tiny.) Also, the bees have been buzzing in the flowers on the pumpkin plants, so hopefullywewillhavealotofpumpkinssoon. Photo by Cindy Golia
