Approve early voting

This Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 8, Connecticut voters will see a question on their ballot asking them to approve a change to our State Consti tution which would allow for early voting.

The question will be: Shall the Constitution of the State be amended to permit the General Assembly to provide for early voting? A “ yes ” vote will give the 2023 legislature the authority to start writing the laws to implement early voting. Early voting could then be an option for voters as early as 2024.

The League of Women Voters supports expanding voting options for everyone, and en courages a “ yes ” vote on the ballot question. With early voting, Connecticut voters would have the option to vote in-person at designated loca tions in advance of Election Day. This would provide vot ers with more flexibility to cast their ballots without worrying about whether or not they can make it to the polls on Election Day due to challenges such as inflexible

work schedules, lack of child care or transportation, or in clement weather. More broadly, it can increase over all voter turnout by providing for more days when voters can vote in person and make lines shorter at the polls on Election Day.

Connecticut is one of only four states that do not have early voting. Millions of vot ers throughout our country already have the right to cast their ballots early by voting in the days leading up to Elec tion Day. The experience of these states has shown early voting to be safe and secure. The early votes are securely recorded, counted and stored, with the same checks and balances as those cast on Election Day.

Early voting is not the same as absentee ballot voting. Connecticut voters can only vote by absentee for very spe cific reasons, written in our State Constitution. Early vot ing would allow any voter to vote in person on a day be sides Election Day for any reason. Absentee voting also involves additional steps for voters, first to complete and

State farmers can apply for federal assistance

Press Release

Governor Ned Lamont an nounced this week that the U.S. Department of Agricul ture has approved his re quest to expand the natural disaster declaration that it recently approved for cer tain parts of Connecticut due to the drought that im pacted the state this sum mer. As a result, agricultur al producers in all eight of the state’s counties are now eligible to be considered for assistance from the Farm Service Agency, such as emergency loans, to off set the costs of production

losses they experienced from the drought.

With the addition of this latest declaration, Fairfield, Hartford, Litchfield, Mid dlesex, New London and Windham counties have each been designated as primary natural disaster ar eas due to the drought. Those designations have resulted in the state’s two remaining counties New Haven and Tolland each being named as contiguous disaster counties. MONEY MATTERS

With

a

Mastering your finances and having a healthy relationship with money isn’t always easy. Far from it. But a few small adjustments in your day-to-day life can meaning fully accelerate progress to ward your financial goals no matter how modest or ambitious those goals may be.

It all starts with a commit ment to spending carefully, saving diligently and invest ing wisely. Consistency in your investment strategy and minor enhancements to your investments can make a big difference over time.

How a little bit can add up

Can you find an extra $100 per month to set aside to ward your retirement? That comes down to about $3.30 per day. If you did that con sistently, earning a 7 per cent average annual return,

that modest amount could add up to more than $51,000 in 20 years, approximately $117,600 in 30 years, and more than $248,500 in 40 years. The longer you accu mulate that small daily amount, the more significant the results.

Can you bump up the extra savings to just $5 a day (or $150 per month)? If so, that total after 40 years would climb to more than $372,800. What if you’re able to generate an 8 percent av erage annual return instead of 7? This small increase would grow your $150 monthly contribution to a total of $486,270 after 40 years. (No fees or taxes are assumed in these hypotheti cal calculations.)

Strengthen your financial foundation

You should make it a priority to identify sources of money that can be added to your long-term investments. Here

Alex Jones declines to put on a defense in defamation trial

WATERBURY Conspiracy

theorist Alex Jones declined to put on a defense Wednes day at his defamation trial in Connecticut and was back in Texas in advance of closing arguments over how much he should pay for promoting the lie that the 2012 Sandy Hook school shooting was a hoax.

The jury of three men and three women is being asked to decide how much Jones should give the families of eight victims and an FBI

are some simple ideas on where to find extra money for your retirement plans and other savings needs: Be more cognizant of pur chases that you might take for granted today. Cut back on meals out or treating yourself to whatever catches your eye while shopping. Capitalize on sale prices when buying groceries or other everyday staples and stick to your shopping list as much as possible to avoid splurging.

Be sure to boost your retire ment savings every time you get a pay raise and try to grow your retirement plan contributions yearly to keep pace with inflation.

Make sure you fully capital ize on an employer match, if offered, through your work place retirement plan. Determine if there are ways to restructure any debts you carry to reduce interest costs and potentially lower monthly payments. Then, invest the difference.

If time and your lifestyle al

agent who all testified they have spent almost a decade being targets of harassment by those who believe the shooting didn’t happen and that they are “crisis actors.”

Jones, who outside the courthouse insisted that he has never been linked to the direct harassment or threats against the families, was found liable by default last year for defaming them and intentionally inflicting emo tional distress. The judge ruled that he had repeatedly violated court orders to share financial documents with the plaintiffs.

low for it, consider taking on a “side hustle” that can gen erate extra income that you can put toward your retire ment savings.

If you are 50 or older, take advantage of the “catch-up contribution” provisions in tax law to boost your retire ment savings beyond the standard maximum amounts.

Now is the time to save

The sooner you can start saving more for retirement, the greater your opportunity to build more wealth. Now is the time to start searching for more ways to save while talking to your advisor about how to most effectively put that money to work.

“With this latest declaration from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the entirety of Connecticut is now covered under this natural disaster designation, allowing farm ers in all eight of our coun ties to seek emergency assis tance stemming from their production losses due to the drought,” Lamont said. “Agricultural producers sup port thousands of jobs in Connecticut and are a criti cal component of our econ omy. I strongly encourage any farmer operators in Connecticut that experi enced losses because of the drought to reach out to their local Farm Service Agency office for information on as sistance that may be avail able. I appreciate Secretary Vilsack and the Biden ad

ministration for expanding their declaration and sup porting Connecticut’s agri cultural industry.”

“Drought conditions hurt farmers across the state this summer, ” Connecticut Agri culture Commissioner Bryan P. Hurlburt said. “The recent rainfall has alleviated water concerns for producers but doesn’t bring back crops that were lost or significantly impacted with reduced yields. The disaster declara tion provides a pathway for assistance, and we encour age producers to contact their local Farm Service Agency office for more guid ance. ”

Farmer operators interested in applying for assistance must contact the local Farm Service Agency office for their region. Farmers have eight months from the date of the declaration to apply for assistance.

Jones’ attorney, Norm Pattis, told the judge that his client was boycotting the proceed ings because he feels he’s being asked to either com mit perjury, be held in con tempt of court or invoke his rights not to answer ques tions under the Fifth Amendment. “And so, from Mr. Jones’ perspective, by operation of law, he has been placed in an untenable position,” Pattis said.

Pattis rested his case without calling any witnesses, then argued in motions to the judge that damages should be limited.

The jury was then dismissed for the day. Jurors were ex pected to begin delibera tions Thursday after hearing closing arguments and in structions from the judge.

The trial began Sept. 13 and the jury heard evidence over 13 days. During the trial, the FBI agent and 14 family members testified, with many saying that after Jones pushed the conspiracy theo ry on his popular Infowars show, they received death and rape threats, mail from conspiracy theorists that in cluded photos of dead chil dren, and had in-person confrontations with people telling them their children or wives or mothers never ex isted.

Mark and Jackie Barden, whose 7-year-old son Daniel was killed, testified Tuesday that people had urinated on their son’s grave and threat ened to dig it up to prove he was still alive.

Relatives said the harass ment has not stopped in the nearly 10 years since the shooting.

Jones in recent years has ac knowledged the shooting happened, but claims the families are being used to push a gun control and antifree speech agenda.

In a similar trial last month in Austin, Texas, home to Jones and Infowars, a jury ordered him to pay nearly $50 million in damages to the parents of one of the children killed in the shoot ing, because of the hoax lies. A third such trial in Texas in volving two other parents is expected to begin near the end of the year.

Jones has said he expects the cases to be tied up in ap peals for the next two years and has asked his audience to help him raise $500,000 to pay for his legal expenses.
