WALLINGFORD — Tuesday’s 32nd Robert M. Neubauer Cross Country Invitational at Sheehan High School was the first since the passing earlier this year of Robert Neubauer, the coach for whom the event is named.

Cars will be allowed into the NHHS parking lot from 2:45 to 3:45 p.m. on Oct. 30.

The the longtime Sheehan coach wasn’t forgotten. Neubauer’s initials were painted into the first hill of the course and Sheehan runners wore ribbons in remembrance of the long-time coach who started this race as the Sheehan Invitational in 1988.

Things to know: Participants must drive in. No walk-ins permitted. Participants must bring candy (Approximately 300 children attended last year). No alcohol permitted on school grounds. All vehicles must remain parked for the entire event. Parking will be on a first-come, firstserved basis until the parking lot is filled.

Ten years later, the race was renamed in his honor and has been known as “The Neubauer” ever since. On Tuesday, on a course muddy from Monday’s rain, 10 boys teams and 12 girls teams got off the line.

In the event of inclement weather, call the Recreation Info-line at 203-234-2535 after 12 p.m. on Oct. 30. Rain will cancel. — Information taken from town.north-haven.ct.us

At its 1925 international convention, Helen Keller charged Lions Clubs International to be “Knights of the Blind” in the crusade against darkness.

Colburn’s presentation will focus on the history of coyotes in Connecticut and will provide practical recommendations for optimum coexistence with our coyote population. Colburn will also share coyote artifacts with the audience.

Since then, the Lions have fulfilled this mission. On Oct. 16, the North Haven Lions Club will be at Sam’s Place Restaurant, 344 Washington Ave., from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to conduct its inaugural White Cane Safety Day initiative to increase awareness of the An eastern coyote.

The hybridization likely first occurred in the Great Lakes region, as western coyotes moved east. MEET THE CANDIDATES

Sally Buemi: Working hard to represent all citizens By Selectman Sally Buemi

I have been serving on the Board of Selectmen for the past eight years. During that time, I've been privileged to talk with many citizens, and I appreciate the kind words of support I've received over the years.

It has not been easy being the lone Democrat on the North Haven Board of Selectmen. But I've worked very hard to always be prepared and to represent all North Haveners. I take my role on the board very seriously; it is an honor

A North Haven tradition in family dining, situated right on RTE 5 this 24 hr diner favorite has been delighting its hungry customers for over 30 years... whether it’s breakfast, lunch, dinner, pie a la mode and coffee or just a late night munchie – the long time family run staff at this clean and tidy restaurant is happy to host you with a smile again and again – easily one of CT’s top diners!

to serve the town I love, my hometown, where I've lived all my life. I am a 1974 graduate of North Haven High School, where I was a varsity athlete. I've developed a good working relationship with my fellow board members, but I've always been certain to emphasize areas of disagreement with Mr. Freda. I believe respectful discussion of different opinions is good for the town and leads to better decision-making. I also enjoy writing my monthly column to keep folks informed about town events. I also appreciate the many opportunities I've had to organize or participate in special events in town; like the

2015 ceremony for World War II veterans, or, in 2018, for World War I veterans, or the recent 9-11 ceremony on the green. These events are an important part of being a member of the Board of Selectmen, a function I am honored to serve. I believe I have the skills and experience to serve on the Board of Selectmen. I have a bachelor's degree in political science, a master's degree in public administration, and a law degree. I served two years on the North Haven Community Services Commission, four years on the Board of Finance, and now eight years on the Board of Selectmen. I have been operating my

own law practice here in North Haven for over 35 years. I was also active for many years in girls and women's sports programs with Parks and Rec., as a softball coach, sponsor and player. I was also a volunteer for Boy Scouts and a history tutor for the North Haven Board of Education. I am anxious to keep working hard for the town. I am asking for your vote on Nov. 2. Candidates running for local office are welcome to submit a writeup for publication of 500 words or less. Send commentaries to news@thenorthhavencitizen.com no later than Monday, Oct. 18.

MEET THE CANDIDATES

Michael Freda: Honored to serve the community By First Selectman Michael Freda

It seems hard to believe that it has been 12 years that I have had the privilege of serving our wonderful citizens of North Haven. We have gone through a great deal together and we have accomplished a great deal together. We have endured major storms, tornados, hurricanes and blizzards and we have always come through together as a strong community. Our accomplishments include bringing in new businesses, balancing budgets, earning the coveted Triple A bond rating gold star desig-

nation, building a middle school, building a new police station, building new fire houses, paving over 120 miles of roadway, improving and investing in updated technology, reinforcing our cyber security defense systems, developing an emergency management center, increasing resources in our 911 dispatch center, and developing an emergency broadcast message system enabling me to communicate with our citizens in emergency situations. We accomplished all of this together, and in six of the last 10 years, have had no tax increases. The past two years, we reduced the mill rate and added services.

I have been proud to represent each of you and represent our town as president of the Connecticut Conference of Municipalities, as the chairman of the Regional Council of Governments, as a member of the Police Officers Standard Training Council, as co-chair of the State Rail Advisory Committee and as chairman of the Regional 911 emergency dispatch MedCom committee. All of this has enabled our town to have very high visibility on a regional level, on a statewide level and a federal level with my many contacts and relationships at all of these levels.

career in local government I noticed that many politicians and new candidates engage in hollow and empty rhetoric. They try hard to sound good but they fall far short in performance or they do not know what they are talking about because of their total lack of experience in ever managing or leading any entity.

The safety and the quality of life for you and your families is of paramount importance to me.

For as long as you would like me to be your first selectman, I can assure you that this government will continue to face every challenge, will always be action-orient-

HOW DO I PREP MY HOME FOR FALL?

You Ask, We Answer:

How Do I Prep My Home for Fall? Ah, fall in Connecticut. While we love the easy, breezy days of summer, the arrival of autumn still gives us a little flutter. From the beautiful fall foliage that blankets our state to sipping apple cider in a pumpkin patch, these few autumn months can be some of New England’s most charming. As we get ready to welcome the official autumn equinox, we recommend this short to-do list to prep your Connecticut home for fall—and remember, the more you do now, the less you’ll have to do when winter rolls around!

REPAIR DRAFTY WINDOWS

SWAP OUT FILTERS

windows or doors on a piece of paper. If you can pull the paper out without resistance, it’s time to replace it. And don’t forget to apply caulk to further seal up any cracks!

Furnace filters are like your home’s silent heroes: You don’t realize how much they do until they need replacing. Dust, dander, pet hair—all of these can clog your furnace filters and make it more difficult for your furnace to run efficiently, thereby making your utility bills higher.

CLEAN YOUR GUTTERS

Keep your roof safe and avoid the nightmare of water leaks by keeping your gutters clear of debris. After such a stormy summer, it’s important to give your gutters some attention to make sure they’re clear of leaves, twigs, berries and other things that can block them and prevent them from diverting water from your roof. Once you inspect your gutters for signs of rust and clean them of debris, protect them for the season and year ahead (hello, falling leaves!) by installing mesh gutter guards. They’ll allow the water to get through and go where it needs to without letting in more debris you’ll have to face down next year.

The number one reason to repair drafty windows and doors? Money. Air leaks allow cold air to sneak into your home, leaving you reaching for the thermostat to turn up the heat to offset the drafts. Weatherstripping can save you up to 20% on your heating bills, so be sure to make this While the weather is still gorgeous enough to relax outdoors, enjoy a top priority on your to-do list. savoring every moment! you can enjoy it for many summers to come.

If you have disposable filters, you can vacuum them once before replacing them completely. If you’re got reusable foam filters, you can vacuum them once a month or clean them with a soft brush to keep them working as they should. Electrostatic or metal filters can be removed and washed with water before putting them back in place.

TEST YOUR SNOW CLEAN YOUR BLOWER FIREPLACE It may seem ridiculous to test out your snowblower in September, but if the past few years of weather have taught us anything, it’s that “once in 100 years” storms and unpredictable temperature swings are the new normal. And, with the global supply chain still being disrupted by the pandemic, you don’t want to be caught empty-handed should Mother Nature dump a whole lot of snow in your driveway. Testing your snowblower now means you can still have it repaired or replaced before winter rolls in—and that means far less stress in the near future.

When you’re ready for a fresh perspective.

New home or a new to you home.

Whether you use your fireplace often, or just a few times a year, having it inspected annually by a professional can keep you safe and stress-free in the long run. Schedule your appointment with a chimney sweep to ensure you don’t have creosote buildup, that there is nothing blocking your flue and that everything is in working order before you light the first fire of the season. Then sit back, relax, and welcome fall’s arrival with a cozy night in!

In Brief

Screenings could help save your life notice any subtle changes. When performing a self-exam, you should be feeling for lumps or masses, and looking for thickening or dimpling of the skin. Skin redness, pain in the breast that’s persistent or severe, and lumps in the underarms are also signs you should not ignore. If a woman is experiencing any of these symptoms, they should call their primary care physician or OB/GYN for evaluation.

By Whitney Young

Here’s a statistic that everyone should know — according to the American Cancer Society, one out of every eight women will develop breast cancer at some point in their life. This is why as medical professionals we emphasize the importance of early detection and making sure women are proactive when it comes to their health. Women should be performing a breast exam monthly. The best time to perform this type of exam is one week after a woman’s period when the breasts are less likely to be swollen or tender. Doing monthly self-exams also help women familiarize themselves with their breasts — allowing them to

That’s when imaging may be ordered like a mammogram or ultrasound, and/or a referral with a breast specialist may occur. Depending on any abnormalities or findings, there would then be follow up with a diagnostic procedure like a biopsy to make an official diagnosis. As a breast surgeon, I always tell my patients that self-examination is just one line of

defense — since breast cancer may not always present in the form of a lump or mass that you can feel on your own. This is why yearly mammograms are a critically important part of early detection. Mammograms can detect the smallest masses, calcifications and changes over time. A woman who is considered at average risk for breast cancer should start getting mammograms at the age of 40. However, if a woman is determined to be high risk based on family history, they should start receiving mammograms and supplemental imaging earlier than 40 years old. I encourage women to have this conversation with their doctor to determine when preventative screenings should begin.

Women can start speaking with their doctors about their risk for breast cancer as early as age 25. Age, breast density, family history and other factors can help a woman and her healthcare team decide when it’s best to initiate breast health screenings. I encourage every women to make their health a priority. If you’re reading this and you haven’t had a mammogram in years — or at all — now is the time to make an appointment. If you put off your mammogram due to COVID, make your appointment — it’s never too late. An analysis by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety of 2009-2012 data found that while more than 80 percent of drivers believed it was completely unacceptable for a motorist to text behind the wheel, more than a third of those same drivers admitted to reading text messages while operating a passenger motor vehicle themselves.
