Fire Explorer program seeking recruits

The Northeast Fire Company in North Haven is home to the town's Fire Explorer pro gram, which allows high school students to get a feel for what a career in emer gency services looks like.

Explorers are taught fire ser vice history, and firefighter skills and safety. Also, they

take part in various drills, such as search and rescue and forcible entry.

“Explorers regularly train on ropes and knots, PPE, SCBA, establishing a water supply, First Aid and more," the NHFD stated on social me dia. "The program reinforces being responsible and ac countable for yourself, your team and lifesaving equip ment.”

Participants meet Tuesday nights, 7 to 9, at the fire house.

Starting out, Explorers are taught the basics of putting on "bunker gear," and doing so in a timely fashion. “Each student will learn to put on their gear repeatedly until it becomes a natural move ment,” said Minicucci, who has been a firefighter since 1986.

The Explorer program fol lows standard Firefighter 1 training, and the hope is that at least some Explorers will become firefighters in town.

First Selectman Mike Freda said the number of volun teer firefighters in North Haven "has dropped signifi cantly" and the Explorer program "is an example of

A responsible adult should accompany young children on neighborhood rounds; If older children or teenagers are going out alone, plan and review a route that you feel is safe and acceptable for them to follow; Teach your children never to enter a stranger’s home or car; Tell children to stay away from open flames including jack-o-lanterns with candles in them; Be sure they know how to stop, drop, and roll if their clothing catches fire (Have them practice, stopping immediately, drop ping to the ground, covering their face with hands, and rolling over and over to put the flames out); Instruct children to travel only in fa miliar, well-lit areas and to stick with their friends; Tell your children not to eat any treats until they return home.

Less money, more civility needed in our politics

North Haven, and parts of East Haven, Durham and North Branford.

I'm the Green Party candi date for State Senate District 34, a suburban/rural district that includes Wallingford,

I grew up and attended pub lic schools in North Haven, graduating from North Haven High School in 1980. I now live in Wallingford,

where I moved to be a care giver to my parents.

Returning to New Haven County after years spent in Southwestern Connecticut, I’ve come to appreciate the quality of life here, with its farms, forests, scenic rivers and ridges. I’ve spent hours volunteering at Tyler Mill Preserve, on the Quinnipiac River Linear Trail Advisory Committee, and on the board of the Wallingford Land Trust. My goal is to maintain this quality of life for generations to come.

My background is not in pol itics, nor ecology, but in ed ucation. I have spent most of my career teaching English as a Second Language, which has brought me in contact with people of all cultural backgrounds. I have also served many years on the board of Teachers Against Prejudice, an organi zation founded by my late partner to promote under

standing and respect for all.

My other civic role is as a Justice of the Peace. Over the years, in Fairfield County, and now in Wallingford, it has been heartening to meet with couples and help them come together as they launch new lives, in partner ship. I’ve witnessed success ful marriages between peo ple of different faiths, and different races and nationali ties, and I am convinced that a diverse community can be equally successful.

When we speak of diversity, we also have to recognize and respect diversity of po litical belief. Recent years have seen growing animosity between Democrats and Re publicans. I think most vot ers are tired of the blame game and just want their government representatives to work on solutions.

To move forward, we need election reform.

First, I hope you will vote “Yes” in November to allow in-person early voting. While petitioning to get on the bal lot, I spoke with many vot ers, and even those who had reservations about mail-in ballots agreed that early vot ing at town halls or else where would make it easier for the elderly, people with disabilities, and those with tight schedules, to partici pate in our democracy.

Second, we need to imple ment Ranked Choice Voting, which has met with success in Maine, Alaska, New York City, and many municipali ties. RCV allows voters to rank candidates in order of preference. It encourages more candidates to run without fear of “spoiling” another’s chances. In places with RCV, campaigns have become more civil, with few er attack ads and more dis cussion of the issues. Bristol PD officers mourned

Citizen report

Public schools in Bristol and North Haven were closed Fri day, Oct. 21 in observance of the funeral services for Bristol police officers, Sgt. Alex Hamzy and Lt. Dustin DeMonte, who was a resident of North Haven.

DeMonte, Hamzy and Officer Alec Iurato were shot Oct. 12 in what police believe was an am bush set up by a 911 call made by the shooter, Nicholas Brutcher. Iurato, who survived a gunshot wound to his leg, struggled to get behind a police cruiser and fired a single shot that killed Brutcher.

In an Oct. 21 social media post, the North Haven Fire Depart ment stated: “Our hearts are with the fallen officers from Bristol as well as the entire Bristol Police Department and all of the law enforcement com munity. Lt DeMonte, it was our honor, sir, to suspend the American flag on your way to and from North Haven today. May God be with you and Rest In Peace.”

Adjusting your spending to deal with inflation

It’s no secret that many Americans are experiencing shrinking savings as high in

flation persists. While many people have come to terms with rising costs, there are minor adjustments that can make a big difference to help reduce the sting on your fi nances. Here are some tac tics to consider.

Pare back on convenience services. Dur ing the pandemic, many of us turned to convenience services that come at an ex tra cost. Did you get in the habit of takeout delivery from your favorite restau rants? Are you paying to have your groceries deliv ered? Are you shopping on line and spending extra for shipping? You might be sur prised by how you can save by running your own er rands.

Cancel unused subscrip tions, memberships. Do you subscribe to multiple streaming services? Are you getting packages in the mail from box subscriptions that

became popular during lockdown? Are you paying for one or more club mem berships that you’re not us ing? Decide what you can live without, then cancel any that aren’t necessary and keep more dollars in your bank account each month.

Look for deals. Talk to your cell phone provider to re view your plan. Shop around for better rates on home and auto insurance and bundle if it makes sense. Consider eliminating cable or satellite if you can get by with a cheaper entertainment alter native. Coupons, rebates, and thrifting are back in fashion.

Don’t pay for your own money. Stop paying conve nience fees charged by many ATMs. Check with your bank to locate cash machines with no fees. Many grocery stores offer cash back options if you need a few bills in your wallet.

Avoid late fees. Pay your bills on time to avoid late fees. Enroll in automated payments whenever possible so you don’t have to worry about forgetting payment deadlines.

Postpone purchases. If your vehicle is still a good runner, and your appliances are working, put off plans to trade in for newer models. With prices surging, you’ll pay top dollar for inventory that is still scarce due to supply chain challenges. For financed purchases, higher interest rates will drive up your overall cost.

RCV, no candidate can win without a broad base of sup port (over 50%).

Third, we need to get big money out of politics. The Citizens’ Election Program has helped, but we need to make it equally accessible to all candidates, not just the major parties.

In an evaluation of the state's 700 entrance and exit ramps, more than 200 of them were assessed as ‘high risk’ for wrong-way accidents. Addi tional measures have also been considered to further improve the safety of these ramps, such as markings on the pavement and the addi tion of reflective tape on guardrails.

State police officials put their

Giulietti partially blames the pandemic for the safety is sues, as drivers still drive quickly on the highway after having gotten used to lighter traffic.

“The infrastructure has re mained the same. What has gotten much worse is driver

behavior,” he said. “Cars are going much faster than they've ever gone before. They got used to driving on the highway when we had low pandemic numbers. Now with everything back at preCOVID levels, to see these high speeds and the acci dents that they're causing has caused us a great concern.”

Currently, the project is only in its earliest stages, having been implemented on the single exit ramp, but DOT of ficials plan to implement the same system on the east bound exit 32 ramp on I-84 in the near future. Although the State Bond Commission allo cated $20 million for the pro ject in July, it’s not enough to implement the system on all 200 high-risk ramps.

According to the DOT, cur rent funding pro vides enough to roll out the system on several ramps so that they can test its effec tiveness before seeking funds from the legislature to put signage up statewide.

‘Great step forward’

The system has already proven effective, Giulietti said, as shortly after the signs were installed before their public demonstration, a driv er was caught going up the ramp the wrong way and quickly turned around when they saw the flashing lights.

State Sen. John Fonfara, DHartford, has been a major proponent of the project and pushed for the approval of the $20 million. He expressed

support for the work of the DOT, and thanked the gover nor for getting the funds ap proved quickly after the threat of traffic accidents had been made clear.

“I'm just grateful for the gov ernor, Commissioner Giuliet ti, and all the folks from the DOT who have embraced this, who have taken this se riously and cut through a lot of red tape to make this hap pen, ” Fonfara said. “This is going to make a big differ ence in saving lives. We know from the few states that have begun this and are experi menting how effective it's been already. This is just a great step forward in ad dressing this growing prob lem.”

Thrift store

From A1

“Everything in my store I have personally picked out. I have to like it to sell it," said Clapp, whose current shop is much larger than her former spot.

“My previous shop was so much smaller, and I could barely fit anything in,” she said. “I could only show just a small portion of what I had and was storing the rest of my things throughout my house, basement, and wher ever I could find the room.”

Now, Clapp has the space to

display all of her various treasures. Perusing Mason Jar Vintage, one will find clothes, accessories, toys, dishware, and much more.

Clapp said she surrounds herself with things she loves. A respiratory therapist by trade, the business owner de scribes Mason Jar Vintage as her happy job.

First Selectman Mike Freda is glad Clapp decided to set up shop in North Haven. “We al ways value small businesses opening up in our town, and the economic development strategy is to recruit and sup port the business,” he said.

“All of these businesses ben efit our community.”

Spooky spots not hard to find in Connecticut

October arrives briskly with chilly air, earlier nightfall, and a certain spookiness leading up to Halloween. As such, The Citizen brings its readers five local locations of creepiness, Connecticut's own haunts and horrors.

Dudleytown

For years, this "Village of the Damned" has sat empty. Long ago, people abandoned the seemingly cursed area, leaving Dudleytown which

was never actually its own town, but a section of Corn wall named for multiple members of the Dudley fam ily desolate, deserted.

Aside from the difficulties that came with land imprac tical for farming, dense for est and three looming mountains, the cause of Dudleytown's demise can only be speculated upon.

Legend states that the Dud leys brought with them a curse, originated with En glish nobleman Edmund Dudley, who was beheaded for treason during Henry

III's reign. The curse alleged ly followed his beheading, passing on down the genera tions, to those who once resided in Dudleytown.

According to myth, the town's misery encompassed everything from suicides and demonic visions, to a wom an being struck by lighting on her front porch and her husband's subsequent de mentia, to an unlucky man whose children went missing in the dark woods, whose wife died of consumption, and whose house burned down.

Legend has it Dudley town ruined the lives of its few later residents, as well. From then on, Dudleytown remained deserted. But vari ous visitors and ghost hunters claim to have seen suspicious orbs, felt unnatu ral chills, and heard strange sounds. Even if none of that is true, the idea that an area once populated and full of life, now quietly decays, is quite eerie.

Mark Twain House

Mark Twain, the author of the beloved adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleber ry Finn, wrote such books in his Hartford home, which is supposedly lively with the dead.

Following the tragic demise of Twain's daughter, Susy, who died of meningitis at 24, it has been suggested that her presence lingers, and her ghost still roams her old home. Multiple paranormal investigators have described hearing unexplain able sounds and seeing shadowy movement, even

full-bodied apparitions, at the Twain residence.

The Mark Twain House actu ally advertises its reputed haunting. Seasonal ghost tours are offered, presenting accounts of paranormal ac tivity and lessons on Victori ans' fascination with spiritu alism.

From a woman claiming to have been briefly possessed by the ghost of Susy, to inex plicable smells of cigar smoke in the billiards room where the author did most of his work Mark Twain House employees and guests mostly agree the place has a creepy vibe.

Union Cemetery

While all graveyards possess certain spooky qualities, par ticularly at night, the myste rious White Lady and Red Eyes said to drift around Easton’s Union Cemetery make it distinct.

Visitors tell tales of the White Lady, the supposed spirit of a murdered woman.

Named for her white night gown or wedding dress, she's described as having long, dark hair. Some suspect she's the ghost of a woman killed in the 1940s; others suggest that she was a wom an murdered early in the 20th century, her body left to rot in a sinkhole behind the neighboring church. There are others who claim she's a woman who died during childbirth and is fruitlessly searching for her lost child. Numerous witnesses have taken photographs that ap pear to capture her essence.

Red Eyes speaks to the sim ple sighting: people say a pair of red eyes seem to peer out of the darkness, eyes al legedly belonging to a man who burned to death.

Connecticut demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren, part of the New England So ciety for Psychic Research, wrote a book, "Graveyard," about this cemetery, and ap pear to have video footage of the White Lady.

Seaside Sanatorium

The derelict Seaside Sanato rium in Waterford served as a hospital for children plagued with tuberculosis, a nursing home, and a facility for people with mental dis abilities.

Sanatoriums homes in tended to provide fresh air and special treatment for pa tients often housed misery and death.

It's been suggested that long-dead patients who met their grim end in the seaside health resort continue their stay. Ghost investigators have reported inexplicable sounds and unexplained movements at the site.

Even without the threat of ghosts, the deserted remains of the Waterford sanatorium are nonetheless chilling.

Bereft of its former child pa tients, the metal skeleton of the playground, without its

swings or seats on the mer ry-go-round, is gloomy and unnaturally still.

The dilapidated building crumbles and rots, with bro ken and boarded-up win dows, diminishing slowly with age.

Yankee Peddler Inn

Much like other rumored-tobe-haunted hotels and inns, Torrington’s Yankee Ped dler features specific rooms that are said to be especially spooky. The best-known room was that of Alice Con ley, one of the original own ers, where she supposedly died. Room 353 is reputedly still her home, and guests are told to be wary of her presence. Her rocker, which sits in the lobby, has been known to rock on its own.

The inn's pub may also be visited by one of the founders, Alice's husband,

Frank Conley, a grey-haired ghost in a black suit.

Also, there are stories of lights that turn on and off unassisted and doors simi larly opening and closing unguided. Guests and em ployees even recount the feeling of being pushed or tugged.

The haunting stories and at mosphere at the inn actually inspired a horror movie. Af ter director Ti West stayed at the Yankee Peddler, he made the film "The Innkeeper," based on its history.

Keep in mind, there has nev er been definitive proof to support the stories drifting around these locations. It may all be myth and super stition, historical exaggera tion.

Regardless of skepticism, there are nonetheless ele ments of inherent eeriness regarding these areas.

Tread lightly.
