In response to the rise in juvenile crime in Connecticut, most especially the increase in incidents involving the theft of motor vehicles, state Rep. Dave Yaccarino (R-87), House Republican Leader Vincent Candelora (R- 86) and state Representative Craig Fishbein (R-90), Ranking Member of the Judiciary Committee, will hold a Juvenile Justice Forum on Monday, Nov. 15, 7 p.m., at the Mildred A. Wakely Community & Recreation Center, 7 Linsley St. The Republican lawmakers will discuss changes to Connecticut laws over the last 10 years, the most recent data, and details of the House Republicans’ plan to address the problem through legislation. Also, attendees are welcome to ask questions. Per facility rules, masks are required. A press release announcing the Nov. 15 forum states: "This stark rise in juvenile crime has See Forum, A2

COMMENTARY

Steps to take during Medicare Open Enrollment season At this time of year, current Medicare beneficiaries have the option to make changes in their coverage. The socalled Medicare Open Enrollment period runs from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7. If you’re enrolled in Medicare, this is an opportunity to make adjustments to your plan that will take effect Jan. 1, 2022. With health care a significant cost concern throughout retirement, it can make a difference if you are able to improve upon your current coverage. Here are five important steps to follow during open enrollment season.

Know what is available to you

Think about the coverage you have today and whether you are satisfied with it. Pay attention to the premiums your plan will charge for 2022 (that should have been disclosed to you by the end of September). Keep in mind that costs for Medicare Part B and Part D prescription drug plans will increase as well next year. Know that you don’t have to settle for your existing plan, but you also want to carefully weigh your options before any changes are made.

If you are interested in making changes, be sure you know how much flexibility is available to you. If you currently have coverage with a Medicare Advantage plan and want to consider switching to a different Advantage plan, you have the flexibility to do so. If you want to switch from original Medicare (Parts A and B) and a supplemental plan (Medigap) to Medicare Advantage, you can do that as well. If you want to drop your Medicare Advantage coverage and enroll in original Medicare, you may have a gap that will be more difficult to fill. Moving to another Medigap policy to supplement

your original Medicare coverage at this point may require a health assessment to determine eligibility and rates. Such a move would also require a standalone Part D prescription drug plan if you so desire.

Determine if your needs will change Circumstances for you could change in 2022, though some of what you may need is unknowable today. You may suddenly encounter a need for more medical coverage or some form of specialized care. You may already have ideas on specific treatments you plan to pursue in the coming year. If so, make sure you’ve chosen the

right kind of coverage to help meet those expenses. If your prescription drug needs may change in the coming year, you’ll want to assess how your current Part D coverage stacks up against other plans as it relates to your specific prescription needs.

Don’t be afraid to ask If you want help in the process, look to financial professionals who specialize in health insurance or, more specifically, Medicare plans, to guide you. This is a complex topic with a wide range of options for regular and See Jolly, A7

From A9

Girl Scout Troop 60421, led by Jennifer Morgan and Maggie Esterheld met at the Historic Cemetery on the North Haven Town Green, with Daytime Gardener members Barbara Feinberg, Mary Ellen Proto, and Walt and Sally Brockett, to expand the daffodil garden along the front hedge. “The map, after last night, sets up pretty well for 2022 for Republicans,” said Ben Proto, chair of the Connecticut Republican Party.

R236876v2

A state that’s often viewed as reliably blue appeared more purple after Connecticut Republicans won seats in traditionally Democratic communities on Nov. 2, often with a pro-parent and tough-oncrime message that seemed to resonate with some voters.

Republicans are hoping this year’s local victories will finally translate into success in next year’s general election. That’s when the governor, other statewide offices and legislative seats are up for grabs. Former Gov. M. Jodi Rell and Lt. Gov. Michael Fedele, who left office in 2011, were the last Republicans to hold statewide office, while the Democrats have maintained control of the General Assembly for years.

GOP leaders listed more than 20 successful “flips” from around the state following this year’s election. They include gaining control of local town councils, as in Montville; defeating incumbent Democrats, like in Windsor Locks; and winning open seats previously held by a Democrat, as in Bethlehem.

REAL ESTATE

HOW CAN I MAKE MY HOME A PET-FRIENDLY OASIS? It’s no secret that at Calcagni Real Estate, we love our pets. If you’re a pet lover like we are, you’ve probably been known to spoil your animal here and there (we’re guilty!). But have you ever thought about making upgrades to your Connecticut home for the sole purpose of making your pet’s life that much better? We’re taking pet-loving to a new level with tweaks to make your home the ultimate pet oasis.

HIDEAWAY FEEDING DRAWER

Whether your Connecticut home is ruled by your dog or your cat, a hideaway feeding drawer is a brilliant, space-saving option to keep them well-fed and you happy that you’re no longer tripping over their bowls. Consider retrofitting an existing kitchen cabinet to hold the food

Have a kitchen island with plenty of room? Consider building out a special nook for pet meals; this one even has its own faucet for easy clean up and water bowl refills!

With wood frames, galvanized wire, a wire or clear polycarbonate roof, your catio can be designed to your specifications. With staggered shelving for your cat to rest on and safely watch the outdoor world go by, a catio can be a safe option for the kitty who prefers the great outdoors.

Rooms with water access—like a laundry room—make an ideal place for a pet washing station. Leftover tiles from that backsplash project? Opt for using them on the pet tub to give it a seamless and cozy look that blends right in. Add a removable shower head to keep bathing easy
