Girl Scout brings Kindness Day to community
HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL
By Everett Bishop The Citizen
Mark your calendars for a new annual event in town – Kindness Day. At the Nov. 7 Board of Selectman meeting, First Selectman Michael Freda presented a proclamation to Girl Scout Sydney Restkhane that officially named Nov. 7 Kindness Day in North Haven.

NORTH HAVEN — There won’t be a perfect regular season this year for Sheehan. The Titans (6-1) dropped their first game of the season Friday, Nov. 8, falling 28-14 in a crossover against SCC Tier I opponent North Haven (4-4) at Mike Vanacore Field. Injuries and turnovers plagued the Titans, who were unable to muster much on offense after scoring more than 40 points in each of their first six games this season.
For starters, the Titans were without star running back Terrence Bogan, who was in concussion protocol. That left the running back duties to Jordan Davis, Ryan Villano and Russell Rutkowski. Starting quarterback Kyle Simmons would also go down with an injury, leaving Anthony Castaldi to handle the duties in the fourth quarter. The bitterly cold weather had an effect early, as both teams fumbled on their opening possession. The Sheehan fumble came from Davis after the Titans had recovered a North
Haven muffed snap at midfield. The Indians would take advantage, as they went 69 yards, aided by three Sheehan offside penalties, to take a 7-0 lead on a one-yard run by Max Augustine.
Planning Kindness Day required Restkhane to work with her Girl Scout advisor to plan and pass out flyers to businesses and residents around town. The flyers even gave examples of small acts of kindness people could to in order to participate, such as donating to those in need, calling a friend and being courteous while driving.
Kindness Day came about as Restkhane was deciding on a project for her Gold Award in Girl Scouts.
“Working with Sydney now these last couple of months ...Sydney’s come up with some thoughts and ideas as to what we can do in North Haven to continue to promote a kind approach with people throughout the community,” Freda said at the Board of Selectman meeting.
“The goal is to do a project and have it annually to help the community,” she said. “I thought Kindness Day was something everyone can participate in, whether it be in public spaces or schools.”
“Overall I think this was a positive experience and hopefully in the future years it can become a bigger project and recognized and create a positive atmosphere in North Haven,” Restkhane said.
Restkhane, who proposed the idea, said the day is meant to “bring awareness to the importance of showing kindness.”
The Titans answered on the following drive, jump-started by a kickoff return by Davis all the way down to the North Haven 24-yard line. Davis initially scored on a swing pass as he hurdled a defender, but it was called back due to a personal foul. See Football, A12

Eager to serve
In particular, I am thankful for the people that contributed to my election to the Board of Finance. I consider it an honor to have been elected. I take this responsibility very seriously and look forward to serving the town, guided by facts and the best interests of our community.
Editor : I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the more than 5,600 North Haven voters who cast their ballots on Nov. 5. It was inspirational to witness the steady stream of voters determined to exercise their right, civic duty and privilege to vote. Because the weather was not ideal, I respected even more the significant efforts made by the elector role models.
I would also like to acknowledge and commend Pat Brown for her 12 years of dedicated service on the finance board, and for her work on the Open Space Advisory Committee. Thanks, again, to all of the voters. I urge residents to attend Board of Finance meetings, which are held the third Wednesday of the month at the Town Hall in Conference Room 1. Nancy Barrett M.B.A.

Veteran, quadruple amputee shares story at QU By Everett Bishop The Citizen
When you think of a veteran and quadruple amputee sharing their story of resilience you probably aren’t expecting comedy. But Staff Sgt. Travis Mills defies expectation.
“I’ve got to be honest standing in front of you tonight I’m a little bit nervous,” Mills said during the Nov. 5 talk. “I hope I don’t bomb this.”
Mills began by talking about his time as an athlete in high school and college before joining the Army and eventually meeting his wife. Mills said that his brotherin-law, Josh Buck, was the one to break the news to him. “I said ‘Am I paralyzed?’ and Josh said ‘No.’,” Mills said. “I looked at Josh again and I said ‘I can’t move my fingers and toes, you tell me the truth.’ And he didn’t sugarcoat it, he said ‘You’re not paralyzed, you don’t have them anymore.’” Mills declined help from mental health professionals and instead dove headfirst into recovery, committing himself to occupational and physical therapy at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. Mills showed the audience his prosthetics, particularly his left arm and how it worked. By flexing particular

Town works towards sustainability goals By Everett Bishop The Citizen
Sustainable CT, a statewide certification program, recently released its comprehensive list of towns around the state who met sustainaibility standards for 2019. North Haven’s status remains registered, however, despite significant progress, the town did not earn bronze or silver certification.
The list of certified actions that a town can complete to be certified with Sustainable CT includes 10 sections with multiple subsections, giving municipalities dozens of action items to choose from and complete to attain certification.

The measures towns have taken to this point are important to the overall goals of Sustainable CT.

HARTFORD (AP) — A new state report indicates Connecticut consumers are remembering to bring their own bags to the supermarket.
The Milford native was a junior nursing student at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven.
Revenue estimates released Tuesday by Democratic Gov. Ned Lamont’s budget office and the legislative Office of Fiscal Analysis project the new 10-cent fee for dispos-
able plastic bags will generate $7 million in the current fiscal year, not the $27.7 million included in the state budget. Office of Policy and Management Secretary Melissa McCaw says the 75 percent drop in anticipated revenue from the tax is not a sign of economic weakness.
Rather, she says consumers and businesses have adapted to the goal of reducing the number of these non-recyclable bags in the environment. The same report shows consumer spending is stronger, with sales tax revenues estimated to be $46.8 million higher than originally budgeted.
