Mark your calendars for a new annual event in town – Kindness Day. At the Nov. 7 Board of Selectman meeting, First Selectman Michael Freda presented a proclamation to Girl Scout Sydney Restkhane that officially named Nov. 7 Kindness Day in North Haven.

NORTH HAVEN — There won’t be a perfect regular season this year for Sheehan. The Titans (6-1) dropped their first game of the season Friday, Nov. 8, falling 28-14 in a crossover against SCC Tier I opponent North Haven (4-4) at Mike Vanacore Field. Injuries and turnovers plagued the Titans, who were unable to muster much on offense after scoring more than 40 points in each of their first six games this season.
For starters, the Titans were without star running back Terrence Bogan, who was in concussion protocol. That left the running back duties to Jordan Davis, Ryan Villano and Russell Rutkowski. Starting quarterback Kyle Simmons would also go down with an injury, leaving Anthony Castaldi to handle the duties in the fourth quarter. The bitterly cold weather had an effect early, as both teams fumbled on their opening possession. The Sheehan fumble came from Davis after the Titans had recovered a North
Haven muffed snap at midfield. The Indians would take advantage, as they went 69 yards, aided by three Sheehan offside penalties, to take a 7-0 lead on a one-yard run by Max Augustine.
Planning Kindness Day required Restkhane to work with her Girl Scout advisor to plan and pass out flyers to businesses and residents around town. The flyers even gave examples of small acts of kindness people could to in order to participate, such as donating to those in need, calling a friend and being courteous while driving.
Kindness Day came about as Restkhane was deciding on a project for her Gold Award in Girl Scouts.
“Working with Sydney now these last couple of months ...Sydney’s come up with some thoughts and ideas as to what we can do in North Haven to continue to promote a kind approach with people throughout the community,” Freda said at the Board of Selectman meeting.
“The goal is to do a project and have it annually to help the community,” she said. “I thought Kindness Day was something everyone can participate in, whether it be in public spaces or schools.”
“Overall I think this was a positive experience and hopefully in the future years it can become a bigger project and recognized and create a positive atmosphere in North Haven,” Restkhane said.
Restkhane, who proposed the idea, said the day is meant to “bring awareness to the importance of showing kindness.”
The Titans answered on the following drive, jump-started by a kickoff return by Davis all the way down to the North Haven 24-yard line. Davis initially scored on a swing pass as he hurdled a defender, but it was called back due to a personal foul. See Football, A12
