Cop, lawmaker discuss spike in crime during ride-along

Running unopposed in the 87th District, state Rep. Dave Yaccarino didn’t have to do much campaigning this fall. Still, the Republican lawmaker remained focused on the needs of North Haven, the

community he has represent ed since 2010. On Tuesday, Oct. 11, Yaccarino took part in a ride-along with North Haven Police Detective Paulius Laukaitis. The two discussed many topics as they cruised through town.

Members of the chamber’s awards committee helped with the selection process.

Before the six awards were presented, keynote speak er Zoe Hunter, managing di rector of the Tsai Center for Innovative Thinking at Yale University, talked about how hardships can contribute to success by sharing stories from her favorite memoirs.

Laukaitis pointed out that North Haven has experi enced an uptick in car break-ins, and lamented that many such crimes go unre ported.

The detective said the town has seen a rise in pursesnatching, as well, with older women being targeted.

Yaccarino, of course, is con cerned about rising crime in the community. Along with his work as a legislator, he’s also a small business owner in town.

Yaccarino said his shop, DJ’s Cards & Comics, was broken into two years ago, leading him to in stall additional cameras and implement other security measures at the Lincoln Street business.

During the ride-along, Laukaitis indicated that over the past year or so, respect for police authority has less ened. The detective said

some drivers won’t even pull over when instructed to. “I think citizens are learning about what we are limited to do,” the detective said.

In 2020, the Connecticut State Legislature passed a police accountability bill, which Yaccarino voted against. Soon after its pas

sage, Yaccarino called the new law a “massive over reach.” He went on to say “changes to ‘Qualified Im munity’ would expose the good men and women who protect our communities to civil lawsuits, along with other unintended conse quences on local municipal ities and taxpayers.”

Yaccarino was reelected on Tuesday, Nov. 8, generat ing some 9,000 votes in the North Haven-only district. Yaccarino said public safety will remain a top priority when he returns to the state capitol.

Time-lapse photography program: Dec. 6, 7 p.m.

Press Release

North Haven Camera Club will welcome guest speaker Shiv Verma Tuesday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. for an online program on time-lapse photography, a technique that makes time appear to speed up.

Time-lapse photography involves taking multiple images and combining them in to a short video. This method allows you to compress hours or days worth of footage into just a few seconds or min utes of dramatic video.

A good example of time-lapse photogra phy is watching daytime change to night or a seedling sprout into a flower. It's a great way to be creative with your pho tography.

Verma published a book on time-lapse photography in 2014, and has been tak ing photos for more than 50 years. His photography has evolved over time to ex press his intense devotion to wildlife and nature, and he has earned numerous awards both nationally and international ly.

Guests are welcome to attend Verma’s Dec. 6 presentation. Just email north havencameraclub@gmail.com. For more information about the club, visit north havencameraclub.com.

Another award, the Certifi cate of Achievement for Conservation, recognized the Daytime Gardeners’ Make & Take Project, which featured a “Bird house with a View.” Partic ipants in this activity as

Also, the Daytime Garden ers received the CT Arbo real Award for a small club for our Chestnut Tree project. The chestnuts for the first experimental trees were planted in 2015 at Peter’s Rock Park and pro duced a tree which devel oped its first nuts last year. As stated above, these chestnuts were planted as a project with the Girl Scouts last spring. The scouts cared for the chest

nuts and were excited to see new seedlings grow.

The seedlings will be planted this fall. This is an on-going project, as it re quires time and patience to grow a tree.

The Daytime Gardeners’ other honors included an Award of Excellence for a small club for the creation of centerpieces for the FGCCT Annual Meeting luncheon, and the Luckn er Youth Award for a small club for our work with young people.

Urban turnout hurt Lamont, but suburb flips helped

Gov. Ned Lamont secured a second term as governor with a wider win margin than in his 2018 faceoff against Republican Bob Ste fanowski, this year beating Stefanowski by more than 158,000 votes, compared to about 44,000 in 2018.

Lamont can thank the sub urbs for that.

Lamont carried 45 towns that Stefanowski had won in 2018, and his margins im proved whether he won or lost in all but 17 mu nicipalities.

The towns that flipped from Stefanowski to Lamont in clude Greenwich and many others along the shoreline, as well as many Hartford suburbs.

“If we were to look at Lam ont in 2018 versus Lamont in 2022, I think people have gotten used to Lamont," said Scott McLean, a political sci ence professor at Quinnipiac University.

"His emergency powers and his nearly daily press confer ences he showed a lot of transparency, and he was frank. He seemed to be telling everyone the truth, and I think they forgave him when he would make a gaffe or say something wrong in these press conferences. They didn’t hold it against him, and I think that started to win off some of the vot ers," said McLean.

While Lamont gained ground in the suburbs and shoreline, he picked up far fewer votes in some major cities, largely because of lower turnout. In Bridgeport this year, for example, Lam ont beat Stefanowski by nearly 8,400 votes (12,523 to 4,151), while in 2018 his win margin was over 18,000 votes (23,383 to 5,337). This year, Lamont took 75.1% of Bridgeport's votes; in 2018, he took 81.5%.

Hartford, New Haven and Bridgeport also saw large drops in voter turnout, 30%, 40% and 26% respectively.

“It’s a combination of things. The Democrats became very much more dependent on the self-financing of the campaign, which may have affected their general sense of urgency in the cities. The polls did not show that this was going to be a tight race," McLean said. "Four years ago, the turnout in the cities was extraordinarily high, so we shouldn't be too sur prised that four years later it’s not as extraordinary, it’s more ordinary."

In New Haven, Lamont's win margin decreased from

around 23,000 votes in 2018 to around 13,000 in 2022, a 44% decrease. In Hartford, his win margin dropped by over 8,000 votes, a 34% de crease.

Voter turnout for this elec tion was 57.53%, according to early reports from the sec retary of the state's office, with over 1.2 million people casting ballots, down from 65.23% in 2018, when there were more than 1.4 million voters.

In some towns, Lamont widened his win margin. In Fairfield, Lamont beat Ste

HELP KEEP

fanowski by more than 5,600 votes this year, while in 2018, he only beat him by about 1,000 votes.

In 18 other towns, Lamont widened his margin by over 1,000 votes.

In Glastonbury, where Lam ont won by a mere 21 votes in 2018, he won by 3,803 votes in 2022.

“In the end, it may come down to just that Lamont won these voters over that he didn’t win over four years ago. Mainly because of COVID and being a re sponsible steward and hav ing this big budget surplus and making plans to invest it,” said McLean. “I think voters gained a lot of trust."
