CIAC: Let the winter games begin

Most of state in COVID red zone Connecticut's most recent COVID-19 report, which includes two weeks of data, showed 36 positive cases in North Haven, which put the community in the coronavirus orange zone (10 to 14 cases per 100,000 people per day). The trigger for top-ofthe-chart red status – where most Connecticut towns and cities now stand – starts at 15 cases per 100,000 people per day.

CHESHIRE — A day after completing a successful fall season that saw relatively few team-wide disruptions from COVID-19, the CIAC released its formal guidance for the upcoming winter season.

According to the state report, as of Nov. 28, 354 people in Connecticut were hospitalized with laboratoryconfirmed COVID-19. Among the hospitalized, 262 – 74 percent – were not fully vaccinated.

By and large, it reiterates the plan the CIAC unofficially released a few weeks ago. The season will start on time in all winter sports. It can include multi-team events and interstate competitions. There will be a full season and there will be state postseason championships. There has been a slight toggle, though, on the subject of masks. While the CIAC repeated that masks will not be required during winter competition for vaccinated athletes — they will be required in certain sports for the unvaccinated — the organization does want its member schools to continue, for the rest of the fall semester, employing the mask policies that were in See CIAC, A8

North Haven’s “Elite 8” celebrate their win at the AYC New England Regional Championship Nov. 20 at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport.

Championship cheer squad is Florida-bound It has been a fairytale-like season for the North Haven D8 Competition Cheerleading team, and the final chapter has yet to be written. First, the squad of 6- to 8-year-olds placed first in their division locally. Then, they were crowned state champs.

From there, the North Haven cheerleaders moved on to the New England competition, and bested the field yet again. Next up for the New England champs is the national competition, which will be See Cheerleaders, A2

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, COVID-19 symptoms may appear 2 to 14 days after exposure to the virus. Symptoms may include fever or chills, coughing, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, and diarrhea. At a media briefing Monday, Hartford HealthCare officials told reporters the much-talked-about omicron variant of COVID-19 was a concern because of mutations in the virus’s spiked protein, but said they feel existing vaccines and boosters See COVID, A2

place for the fall season. The salient point there: Indoor fall athletes — namely, volleyball players — had to wear masks while playing, whether vaccinated or not. Once students are dismissed for the Christmas break, the CIAC states in its winter plan, “schools may begin to utilize (at their discretion) the revised masking rules for the winter sports season.”

Two-thirds of holiday shoppers surveyed in early November planned to shop Thanksgiving weekend this year, according to the National Retail Federation. The survey found 30.6 million planned to shop either in-store or online on Thanksgiving Day, 108 million on Black Friday, 58.1 million on Small Business Saturday, 31.2 million on Sunday and 62.8 million on Cyber Monday. All that said, local school districts still have the discretion to decide if their vaccinated athletes will participate in basketball, hockey, and track running events without a mask after the Christmas break.

Please & Thank you.

The CIAC drew up its most recent plan in collaboration with the Connecticut Department of Public Health and the Connecticut State Medical Society Sports Medicine Committee. It matches DPH rules for youth sports. The CIAC also continues to stress vaccinations as the best means of preventing COVID outbreaks and quarantines. As in the fall, coaches and athletes who are vaccinated do not need to quarantine if exposed to a COVID-19 case, as long as they remain asymptomatic. Partially vaccinated or unvaccinated coaches and athletes who are a close contact of a known COVID-19 case will have to quarantine for at least 10 days (with a negative test on Day 8 or later) or a full 14 days without a test. All coaches and athletes who experience COVID19 symptoms after a close contact with a known case — regardless of vaccination status — will have to quarantine for 10 days (with a negative test on Day 8 or later) or 14 days without a test. Weekly testing for athletes who are not yet fully vaccinated is recommended. As in past seasons, the CIAC plan is subject to change based on changes in COVID metrics. The 2021-22 winter plan is a far cry from a year ago, when COVID was in its second surge and schools, along with sports, shut down until the middle of January. A winter sports season was staged, but it was a month late in starting, it was abbreviated and there was no state postseason. Wrestling was canceled all together and indoor track severely limited because multi-team events were not allowed.

Hartford HealthCare Center for Healthy Aging is offering free virtual memory screenings that can be scheduled at a person’s convenience. gin life in a nursery where superior seed is planted and grown to two-year-old seedlings. The seedlings are then taken from the nursery beds and replanted in Christmas tree plantations.

Latino Communities News Editor - Bilingual Record Journal, Meriden, CT • Full Time, Management

While growing, Christmas trees provide many environmental benefits. They replenish the Earth's oxygen supply, serve as wildlife habitat, increase soil stability and provide a valuable and aesthetically pleasing improvement to the land.

About the Job The Record-Journal seeks a versatile, bilingual editor to oversee our growing Latino Communities Reporting Lab. We launched the lab in March 2021 after conducting a 5-month listening tour in our community. We’re looking for someone with a passion for the lab’s mission - To amplify the voices of our local Latino communities, including to provide empowering, fact-based news, information and resources for our Latino communities; to shine a light on injustices and inequities to promote greater understanding and a more inclusive community for everyone; to showcase the successes and contributions of Latinos as a way of inspiring young people to expand what they consider possible.

— CTchristmastree.org

Tree selection Selecting and setting up a Christmas tree is all part of the seasonal fun, but as the centerpiece of holiday decorations for many homes a little extra preparation can help you make the most of your unique display.

Community listening provided the foundation of the lab. In the coming year, the editor will take the lead in an innovative listening project collaborating with journalists, data experts, a network of community leaders, and technology partners to understand the needs of our local Latino communities and build trust through deeper community listening, engagement and data gathering. The editor will oversee content creation with an emphasis on aligning news strategies to best serve the community using what we learned during the project.

Decide on where you will place the tree. Will it be seen from all sides or will some of it be up against a wall? Be sure to choose a spot away from heat sources, such as TVs, fireplaces, radiators. Place the tree clear of doors.

Purpose of Position

Measure the height and width of the space you have available in the room where the tree will be placed. There is nothing worse than bringing a tree indoors only to find it’s too tall. Take a tape measure with you to measure your chosen tree and bring a cord to tie your tree to the car. Remember that trees sold on retail lots in urban areas may have come from out of state and may have been exposed to drying winds in transit. They may have been cut weeks earlier. Buy trees early before the best trees have been sold and where trees are shaded. Ask the retailer whether his trees are delivered once at the beginning of the season or are they delivered at different times during the selling seas on. Choose a fresh tree. A fresh tree will have a healthy green appearance with few browning needles. Needles should be flexible and not fall off if you run a branch through your hand. Raise the tree a few inches off the ground and drop it on the butt end. Very few green needles should drop off the tree. It is normal for a few inner brown needles to drop off. See Trees, A11

Plan, supervise and create news content for publication in print, online and social media for the growing Latino audience in central Connecticut. This position will assist the Latino Communities Reporting Lab to fulfill our mission of amplifying local Latino voices and be assigned duties related to fulfilling that mission with a strong emphasis on listening to the needs of the audience.

Uber holiday discount available to residents As traffic fatalities continue to rise, the Connecticut Department of Transportation Office of Highway Safety has announced a $10 discount code for Uber, to encourage people who consume alcohol or other impairing substances to use ride-hailing instead of putting themselves and others on the road at risk by getting behind the wheel. The discount code, SAVETHENIGHTCT, will be available through Jan. 14, 2022 between the hours of 5 p.m. and 4 a.m. This program was made possible thanks to a grant from the Governors Highway Safety Association

(GHSA), in partnership with Uber. Connecticut is one of only five states to receive this grant. “Traffic fatalities are increasing at an unprecedented rate” said Connecticut Department of Transportation Commissioner Joseph Giulietti. “It is a real crisis. If you, or someone you know, needs a sober ride – please, opt for a ride, and use this $10 Uber discount code to save the night – and potentially save a life.” Ride-hailing services have been shown to reduce crash and impaired driving rates by offering an alterSee Uber, A12

A secret house of magical elves is offering a rare chance for us humans to see how they make Christmas a reality when they open the doors this weekend to the magical house they’ve been secretly running on South Main Street in Wallingford. North Haven resident Jill DeChello, pictured, once again, organized the Magical Elf House attraction. This year the elves’ holiday residence is being hosted at the Wallingford Historic Preservation Trust’s American Silver Museum at the Johnson Mansion. Around a dozen elves will be guiding tours through the house, bringing participants through seven rooms decked out in North Pole style. “It really does give you that kind of warm old school holiday feel,” said DeChello. MONEY MATTERS

Save for education without taking your eye off retirement By Jeff Jolly

It’s no secret that many American parents want to support their kids by paying for their college education. According to recent research from Student Loan Hero, 92 percent of parents today have already paid for or plan to assist with these costs. Furthermore, 68 percent of parents say they would consider withdrawing from their retirement savings, potentially delaying retirement, to help their kids Jolly pay for college.

R236883v1

While the choice to delay retirement to pay tuition is understandable and even admirable, the reality is doing so may not be the wisest financial decision. If you are considering how to balance saving for college and retirement, read on for some perspective.

Prioritize college bills or retirement? Although it may be hard to hear, saving for retirement should take priority over college tuition. To understand why, consider the following: You may not get to choose your retirement date. Injury, caring for an aging parent, or a layoff are among the factors that could ultimately make the decision for you. You don’t want to run out of money in retirement. If your savings come up short, you don’t have the ability to apply for scholarships, grants or financial aid to help bridge the gap. (Your child has access to these options to help pay for college.) Instead, your options are likely to be working longer, finding other sources of income or spending less on travel and other retirement dreams. See Jolly, A13

The North Haven Citizen | northhavencitizen.com

From A12

While it’s imperative to focus on your own financial security in retirement, funding higher education is still an important goal for many parents. The key is striking the right balance between saving for both goals. Consider the following tips as a starting point: Paying for college doesn’t have to be all-or-nothing. Many parents choose to pay a percentage of the total bill, cover certain expenses (e.g. tuition, technology fees or room and board), pay for a set number of years, or contribute as much as they are able to save by the first day of school instead of funding the full cost. Revising your college savings goal in one of these ways could allow you to direct more money to retirement.

Discuss your intentions with your child. No matter how much you contribute, talk to your child (if and when your child is old enough) about your financial commitment

Please & Thank you.

No matter your financial situation, know that it is possible to make meaningful progress toward both goals, particularly if you are intentional about how to allocate your savings. Consult a financial advisor and tax professional if you want help setting specific savings goals and understanding the various investing options available to you.

If your child has sights on graduate school, decide whether you will contribute to those bills too. so he or she knows what to expect. Discuss how your contribution will look at their preferred colleges. For example, if you agree to pay a set amount, perhaps this money will fully cover community college, a substantial amount at a state school, and leave a larger portion of the bill outstanding at a private college. Please & Thank you.

In order to continue delivery to your home or business, we need to have each resident or business let us know that, by filling out our on-line requester form at: myrecordjournal. com/news/north-haven-citizen. Or, you can call us at 203-634-3933 and we can mail you a postage paid postcard to fill out and return.
