Santa delivers presents to local families

The holiday spirit was undoubtedly in the air. Even though Santa Claus didn’t have any reindeer escorting him, firefighters from Northeast Company 4 accompanied St. Nick throughout town recently, delivering presents to the boys and girls on his list. The North Haven Fire Department’s annual Santa Run took place Saturday, Dec. 17 and Sunday, Dec. 18, and Santa –riding in a fire truck – visited more than 90 families.

HEALTHY HOLIDAYS TO YOU

Members of the Bobcat Stride community walking program at Quinnipiac University’s North Haven campus gathered for a holiday luncheon on Dec. 5 to celebrate the friendships they’ve formed. The Bobcat Stride, a free program, is open to people age 50-plus. Walkers meet weekdays from 6 to 9 a.m. at QU, 370 Bassett Road. For more information about the Bobcat Stride program, contact Katie Picard at Katherine.Picard@ qu.edu.

Residents bundle up for annual menorah lighting

The chilly temperature didn’t stop members of the Jewish community and other local residents from coming out to the town green for North Haven's annual menorah lighting on Monday, Dec. 19, the second night of Chanukah.

Children and families enjoyed jelly donuts and hot latkes, and Northeast Company 4 distributed chocolate coin gelts from 30 feet up thanks to one of the fire department's ladder trucks. A raffle for an Amazon gift card added to the fun.

“It was wonderful celebrating with the community,” said Rabbi Moshe Hecht of the Chabad Jewish Center of Hamden. “Chanukah is a universal message that we all have so much inside of us to share with the world. Chanukah reminds us to take that light inside of all of us and share it with the rest of the world.”

The 2022 Santa Run was the fire department’s 24th.

“Money goes to support the association, which in turn helps support the company with needed items,” Lt. Todd Ricci said.

The first stop for Engine 5 was the Ricci household.

Joining the family was Laura DeMonte, wife of slain Bristol police officer Sgt. Dustin DeMonte.

Mrs. DeMonte was with her children, Phoebe and Porter, who were excited to see Santa.

“I think the Santa Run is fantastic, and it brings a smile to the kids’ faces,” Laura DeMonte said.

Before the Santa Run, parents dropped off wrapped gifts at the main firehouse, along with a donation to the Northeast Volunteer Fire Association. Then, Engines 5 and 7 rolled through town delivering the gifts.

“This is a major fundraiser for us, but it’s not really about the money,” said Ricci, the fire association president. “It’s about the spirit of the season and, most importantly, the happiness and smiles we bring to the children of North Haven.”

After the Ricci home, Engine 5 visited families on Stone Hedge Drive, Summer Lane, Hitching Post Circle, and several other neighborhoods.

At each stop, Santa checked his list, ensuring he had a special present for each child who came out to see him.

Cheerleaders shine on national stage

Submitted

The North Haven Nighthawks D10 competition cheerleading team finished an amazing season with a very unexpected but happy ending.

Coached by Jenn Hettrick, Lindsay Capozzo and Nicole Fitzgerald, the squad earned first place in the local competition and finished second at the state level.

The team’s strong showing at the state competition qualified it for the AYC Regional Competition held Nov. 19 at the Rhode Island Convention Center.

There, the Nighthawk cheerleaders placed fourth.

While that finish was not quite good enough to earn the North Haven girls a spot

‘Corporate highway robbery’ protested in New Haven

NEW HAVEN A group of highway service plaza workers and union organizers showed up to a Church Street office lobby with $1 million in “cash” as part of a holiday-season pressure campaign against alleged wage theft at Dunkin’ Donuts.

That was the scene at 195 Church St. Thursday, Dec. 15 at a protest led by Local

32BJ of the Service Employees International Union.

The SEIU hosted the event to draw attention to an example of highway robbery, so to speak.

32BJ District Leader Neil Diaz and union spokesperson

Franklin Soults said that an international fast food employer called Applegreen has defied state law by paying only $14 or $15 an hour instead of a prevailing wage of $18.21 an hour to 175 Dunkin’ Donuts workers at 23 plazas across Connecticut.

They said that the state Department of Labor requires state contractors like service plaza employers to pay their workers a prevailing wage that, for these Dunkin’ Donuts employees, should be roughly $4 above the current minimum wage.

“We’re here today to confront Applegreen,” Diaz said, “who is the leasing company that’s leasing the service plazas up on the state highways. We want to give Applergreen a gift, which is a bag of a million dollars in play money, a million dollars that Applegreen has stolen from the workers in the past couple of years.”

Thus the rally and protest outside of 195 Church, where Applegreen’s regional CEO, Trevor Moore, purportedly has an office on the eighth floor.

No actual Dunkin’ Donuts service plaza workers were present at the Dec. 15 protest. Though DeShawn Brownell, a SEIU member and security guard, did read a letter written by one someone who works at the Dunkin’ Donuts at the North Haven service plaza. That worker said that he was “shocked to learn Applegreen is not paying the minimum standard wage that the law requires,” Brownell read. “I struggle to make ends meet and my life would be much better if my employer wasn’t stealing wages every hour.”

Two McDonald’s fast food restaurant employees who work at the I–95 service plaza near Darien then took the mic to speak about the union’s successful campaign to get McDonald’s to pay their workers the state-mandated prevailing wage and to show solidarity with their Donuts colleagues.

“The work continues,” Rosa Franco said. “I hope that my co-workers in other restaurants stay in the union together with us.”

Mario Franco, who was tasked with holding the bag of play money across his chest, said that he’s worked at the McDonald’s in Darien for over 30 years. “We got a lot of discrimination in this place,” he said. “That’s why I’m here, to make support for 32BJ and make it stronger for everybody.”

The group then made their way into the office tower’s lobby with the intention of heading up to the eighth floor to hand deliver the bag of play cash directly to Applegreen’s CEO. But they didn’t make it past a security guard, who said she had called up to the office, that no one was there, and that the group couldn’t come in.

So the union organizers called Moore on the phone instead. When he didn’t pick up, they left a message.

“If you’re upstairs, please come down and say hello,” Diaz said. Phil Andrews, a fellow organizer at 32BJ, then led the workers in the lobby in a quick call and response: “32!” he said.

“BJ!” they replied.

Back outside of the office building, the union organizers convened one more time to recommit themselves to holding Applegreen accountable.

Diaz also described a protest that the group held earlier in the morning outside of the 360 State St. apartment building, where, he and several others claimed, seven unionized maintenance workers were recently fired after the apartment building was bought by a new group of investors.

Menorah

From A1

The word Chanukah means “dedication” and the eightday festival commemorates the purification and rededication of the Temple following the Greek occupation of that holy place.

Chanukah is a time for members of the Jewish community to rededicate themselves to keeping the flame of Jewish religion, culture and peoplehood alive so that it may be passed on to the next generation.

Several years ago, North Haven resident Sherman Katz approached First Selectman Mike Freda with the idea of placing a large menorah on the green akin to a community Christmas tree. Katz also suggested holding a menorah lighting celebration.

Freda was all for it. “I thought it should have been done years before that,” the first selectman said Monday night.

Portfolio adjustments to consider before year’s end

As the end of the year approaches, it’s a good time to closely study your invest-

ment portfolio and determine if any changes are appropriate. Keep in mind that some changes may need to be implemented by Dec. 31 to avoid negative tax implications – which is all the more reason to get started today.

Here are four steps to consider as you assess your portfolio:

Review and rebalance

In order to continue delivery to your home or business, we need to have each resident or business let us know that, by filling out our on-line requester form at: myrecordjournal. com/north-haven-requester. Or, you can call us at 203-634-3933 and we can mail you a postage paid postcard to fill out and return. Without the necessary requester information, delivery of your North Haven Citizen to your home or business, will end.

It’s beneficial to review the performance of investments in your portfolio. While it may be tough to see a decline in value this year in light of rocky markets, remember to consider the longer-term picture and how your investments have performed over 5, 10, or more years. Chances are, if you’ve been invested during those periods, you’ve seen significant growth in your assets despite the shorter-term ups and downs.

cent or more from their original allocation, you may want to rebalance those holdings. You can put more money to work in assets that are now underrepresented compared to your initial allocation and reduce your holdings of those that have grown by 5 percent or more, back to their original position. This helps you maintain a consistent investment strategy over time that is aligned to your current risk profile.

“Harvest” capital losses

vesting” losses. You can use those losses to offset capital gains (or capital gain distributions from mutual funds) you’ve realized during the year on other investments. Your tax advisor can help decide whether you should look for short-term or longterm losses that could result in tax savings on your 2022 return.

R237823

Next, compare your current asset allocation to how it looked when you first invested in the current asset mix. If any positions have changed in value by 5 per-

If you hold investments in taxable accounts, look at how they have performed this year. You may determine that some positions are no longer appropriate for your portfolio. Choosing to sell positions that have lost ground is referred to as “har-

Before you make changes, think about whether you are comfortable eliminating the position from your portfolio, at least for a period of time. You must be careful of wash sale rules. For example, if you sell shares at a loss, and purchase substantially identical shares 30 days before or after the sale your tax loss will be disallowed. Reminder, if you sell shares in your taxable account and buy substantially identical shares in your IRA within 30

days, the wash sale rule applies. Be sure to check with a financial advisor and tax professional about how these rules might affect your buy-and-sell decisions.

Gifts of stock

If you do plan to reduce or eliminate a stock or mutual fund position that has appreciated in your portfolio that you’ve held for more than one year, consider gifting it to a favored non-profit organization before year’s end. In doing so, you could avoid having to pay tax on the capital gain. People who itemize their deductions can also claim a tax deduction on their 2022 return based on the fair market value of the stock at the time the gift is made. Be sure to check with your financial institution to see if there is a deadline for them to complete the transaction by the end of the year.

Prepare for distributions

No matter how mutual funds held in taxable accounts perform, funds may generate realized gains from selling underlying positions in 2022. Even if you reinvest all earnings into additional shares, you will be subject to taxation on any capital gain distributions made by the fund. Mutual fund companies should provide you with an estimate of those payouts before the end of the year so you can assess the potential tax impact.

Talk to your advisor

It always makes sense to do a year-end review with your financial advisor. This allows you to discuss your comprehensive financial plan and consider adjustments that could be beneficial in 2023 and beyond.
