WALLINGFORD — Dozens of area residents visited the Wallingford Public Library Wednesday, July 17 with the hope of becoming Amazon employees.

“We partner with different employers to facilitate candidate interviewing, recruitment slates. Also we provide different reimbursement incentives to help with onboarding individuals in a cost effective way,” Lary said.

Applicants formed multiple lines in the library lobby, waiting for the final step in the hiring process for Amazon’s new North Haven facility. After 24 years of serving as North Haven fire commissioner, Peter Criscuolo faces opposition from endorsed Democratic nominee Jennifer Caldwell. At a Democratic Town Committee meeting held Tuesday, July 16, Caldwell received the Democratic endorsement for fire commissioner with 26 out of 41 votes. Criscuolo received 12. While Caldwell was endorsed to be the Democrats’ candidate in

November, Criscuolo isn’t counting himself out, saying he intends to start his campaign as soon as possible. “They voted for inexperience,” said Criscuolo, after the DTC meeting adjourned. “I’m running my primary starting tomorrow.” In addition to his years of experience as a commissioner, Criscuolo also is the longest sitting president of the New Haven County fire commissioners, is the only union endorsed fire commissioner and has been en-

dorsed by three volunteer fire departments in North Haven. However, Kathy Grant, chair of the DTC, believes that Caldwell might be a better fit. “She can offer a different perspective,” said Grant. “She has an extensive background in healthcare.” Caldwell’s background includes an undergraduate degree in occupational therapy and a masters in special education. Washington Ave. Boston Market closes By Everett Bishop The Citizen

Boston Market on Washington Avenue closed its doors July 7 as part of a regional move that saw 45 other stores in the restaurant chain close as well. The North Haven closing was the only one in Connecticut, according to a Boston Market spokesperson.

First selectman Michael Freda was not surprised by the closing. “Their sales had declined dramatically,” he said. “There’s a new owner of the building and Boston Market did not renew the lease. As we see in economic development, if the business is not being supported … they reserve the right to close.”

In a letter to employees, Boston Market CEO, Frances Allen said underperformance caused the regional closings. Allen stated that Boston Market “must take steps to ensure our operational structure will support longterm sustainability." Freda has begun working See Market, A16

BEE DISCUSSION

On July 10, North Haven Land Trust board members met with a local bee keeper, Tom Anderson, who erected two bee hives on a land trust property – Pine Hill Estates. It is located between Beach Lane and Arrowdale Road and consists of around 11 acres. Anderson provided members with a live exhibit of active hives and informed the group of the hierarchal nature of bees, the construction of their hives, and the necessity of helping bees propagate, as they are key pollinators. 1. To qualify for the advertised APY, you must enroll your new or existing Platinum Savings account in this offer between 07/08/2019 and 08/30/2019 by speaking to a banker and requesting the special rate. Offer is subject to change at any time, without notice, and is available only to Platinum Savings customers in the following states: CT, DE, FL, NJ, NY, PA. In order to earn the Special Interest Rate of 1.98% (Special Rate), you must deposit $25,000 in new money to the enrolled savings account and maintain a minimum daily account balance of $25,000 throughout the promotional interest rate period. “New money” is money from sources outside of the customer’s current relationship with Wells Fargo Bank, N.A. or its affiliates (which includes all deposit, brokerage and loan/credit accounts). The corresponding Annual Percentage Yield (APY) for this offer is 2.00%. The Special Rate will be applied to the enrolled savings account for a period of 12 months, starting on the date the account is enrolled in the offer. However, for any day during that 12 month period that the daily account balance is less than the $25,000, the enrolled account will not be eligible for the Special Rate and will instead earn the applicable Standard Interest Rate for a Platinum Savings account. As of 05/31/2019, the Standard Interest Rate and APY for a Platinum Savings account in CT, FL, NJ and NY with an account balance of $0.01 and above is 0.05% (0.05% APY); and for a Platinum Savings account in DE and PA with an account balance of $0.01 to $99,999.99 is 0.05% (0.05% APY) and with an account balance of $100,000 and above is 0.10% (0.10% APY). Each tier shown reflects the current minimum daily collected balance required to obtain the applicable APY. Interest is compounded daily and paid monthly. The amount of interest earned is based on the daily collected balances in the account. Upon the expiration of the 12 month promotional period, then-current Standard Interest Rates apply. Minimum to open a Platinum Savings account is $25. A monthly service fee of $12 applies in any month the account falls below a $3,500 minimum daily balance. Fees may reduce earnings. Interest rates are variable and subject to change without notice. Wells Fargo may limit the amount you deposit to a Platinum Savings account to an aggregate of $1 million. 2. Available in-branch only; you must speak with a banker to request the special rate. Annual Percentage Yield (APY) is effective for accounts opened between 07/08/2019 and 08/30/2019 and requires a minimum of $25,000 in new money brought to Wells Fargo. “New money” is money from sources outside of the customer’s current relationship with Wells Fargo Bank, N.A. or its affiliates (which includes deposit, brokerage and loan/credit accounts). Public Funds and Wholesale accounts are not eligible for this offer. APY assumes interest remains on deposit until maturity. Interest is compounded daily. Payment of interest on CDs is based on term: For terms less than 12 months (365 days), interest may be paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or at maturity (the end of the term). For terms of 12 months or more, interest may be paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or annually. A penalty for early withdrawal will be imposed and could reduce earnings on this account. Special Rates are applicable to the initial term of the CD only. At maturity, the special rate CD will automatically renew for a term of 6 months, at the interest rate and APY in effect for CDs on renewal date not subject to a Special Rate, unless the Bank has notified you otherwise. 1., 2. Due to the new money requirement, new accounts may only be opened at your local branch and you must speak to a banker to request the special rate offers for both new and existing accounts. Wells Fargo reserves the right to modify or discontinue the offer at any time without notice. Minimum new money deposit requirement of at least $25,000 is for this offer only and cannot be transferred to another account to qualify for any other consumer deposit offer. If you wish to take advantage of another consumer deposit offer requiring a minimum new money deposit, you will be required to do so with another new money deposit as stated in the offer requirements and qualifications. Offer cannot be: • Combined with any other consumer deposit offer. • Reproduced, purchased, sold, transferred, or traded. 3. The Portfolio by Wells Fargo program has a $30 monthly service fee, which can be avoided when you have one of the following qualifying balances: $25,000 or more in qualifying linked bank deposit accounts (checking, savings, CDs, FDIC-insured IRAs) or $50,000 or more in any combination of qualifying linked banking, brokerage (available through Wells Fargo Advisors, LLC) and credit balances (including 10% of mortgage balances, certain mortgages not eligible). If the Portfolio by Wells Fargo relationship is terminated, the bonus interest rate on all eligible savings accounts, and discounts or fee waivers on other products and services, will discontinue and revert to the Bank’s then-current applicable standard interest rate or fee. For bonus interest rates on time accounts, this change will occur upon renewal. If the Portfolio by Wells Fargo relationship is terminated, the remaining unlinked Wells Fargo Portfolio Checking or Wells Fargo Prime Checking account will be converted to another checking product or closed. © 2019 Wells Fargo Bank, N.A. Local starts new career running errands for others Running a business centered on completing errands for others wasn’t always what Michele Charm of North Haven envisioned herself doing. In fact, Charm had spent 27 years working as a teacher in Hartford, “teaching everything but first and fourth grade.” She was inspired by her parents work as teachers and wanted to make the foray into education herself. Eventually, she “burned out” and decided to retire from the education field. What came next was Errands By Michele. “It wasn’t really an errand business to begin with. It was pet sitting,” said Charm. “Then my sister said ‘People are busy, so maybe you should do an errand business.’” From there, Charm said her sister created the posters and website for Errands by

cants left with an offer contingent on successful completion of a background check and the drug test, Lary said. New Haven resident Shellick Douglas said she has been in the retail sector for the past 10 years. Douglas feels a sense of urgency to get a job because she recently gave birth to twins. Waterbury resident Mary Fields said she was drawn to the job because of the pay. Fields works in New York and commutes for a job that pays $15 an hour. She applied for the job because she wants to be able to work closer to home. Wolcott resident Ruth Rivera said she already has a job but is looking for a better opportunity. “It’s the 401K, I can move up in the company, it’s convenient and it’s close by,” Rivera said. Naugatuck resident Jennifer Bryant said she has been searching for a job since February when she was laid off. She needs to start working soon before her unemployment ends. The ware-

house job she applied for is much different than her previous job working at a digital media company, she said.

“It’s something different … I figured it’d be nice to try something new,” Bryant said.

The hiring event came after a nationwide strike earlier in the week during the company’s promotional Prime Day sale. Amazon workers went on strike against the working conditions at facilities and to increase efforts for employees to unionize. West Haven resident Dan Flanagan said he decided to work for Amazon because he sees that the company is growing. He has experience working in a warehouse. Flanagan said he heard about warehouse strikes at other facilities and talks of creating a union, but said he is not too concerned.

Compromise planned on restaurant work rules By Susan Haigh Associated Press

HARTFORD — Connecticut lawmakers decided Monday to come up with compromise legislation this summer that addresses concerns raised by restaurant owners over wage and hour rules, forgoing a plan to override Gov. Ned Lamont’s veto of a bill that would have required the state Department of Labor to clarify its standards.

Democratic House Speaker Joe Aresimowicz of Berlin said meetings will be held in the coming days to try and reach an agreement. An informational meeting for the public will then be held on a new bill before the General Assembly returns for a vote.

“But to come up with a bill that would have taken into consideration all of the concerns would have been very difficult.” The Connecticut Restaurant Association and its members want the state’s rules clarified, considering there are inconsistencies that have become the subject of litigation.

“We really tried all weekend, shopping ideas back and forth,” said Aresimowicz, who had announced Friday the House of Representatives Some restaurant owners are planned to override the veto. facing the possibility of pay-

HARTFORD — Revenue generated by slot machines at Connecticut’s two casinos continued a steady decline in June, down for the 12th consecutive month amid new regional competition. Foxwoods Resort Casino reports it made $35.3 million in slot machine revenue last month, almost 12% less than the $40.1 million it kept the previous June.

took in $430.5 million. State budget officials anticipate it will fall to $221 million by 2020, as regional casinos such as the MGM Springfield, which opened last August and the Encore Boston Harbor, which opened last month, become more established.

New York on Tuesday joined a growing list of states, including New Jersey and Rhode Island in allowing sports wagering.

But in his veto message, Lamont raised concerns about how the bill would have repealed the state’s current regulations retroactively in order to address any pending lawsuits. He noted that could “extinguish a worker’s right in an amount lawfully required.” Lamont also said the legislation made significant policy changes to a complex area of the law without sufficient study, debate or input from stakeholders. On Monday, a spokesman said, “the governor remains

House Minority Leader Themis Klarides, a Republican from Derby, had hoped lawmakers could pass a fix on Monday. “This needs to be done soon,” Klarides said, adding how Connecticut’s restaurant owners have been given the wrong information for years. “So now what do you do? This needs to be clarified yesterday.” Lawmakers on Monday declined to override two other bills that Lamont vetoed. They include one that would have made the theft of cooking oils a Class A misdemeanor, punishable by up to one year in prison. In his veto message, Lamont questioned the severity of the penalty. The second vetoed bill would have weakened a requirement that real estate brokers tell prospective buyers when they’re representing the interests of the seller. In total, Lamont signed 223 bills passed during this year’s regular session.
