As a service project for attaining her black belt certification, Lydia Sobkiewicz, 16, created a brochure to raise awareness of Tristan's Law, which requires that ice cream trucks be equipped with safety devices, and forbids them from selling in high-traffic areas.

Southington BOE cuts 6 positions

SOUTHINGTON The Board of Education voted along party lines last week to adopt its revised budget, which will cut six sixthgrade teaching positions, three between DePaolo and Kennedy middle schools.

Despite pleas from a coalition of sixth-grade teachers who showed up to advocate retaining the posi-

tions for the benefit of the students, the board opted to move ahead with the adoption.

The June 8 vote had been tabled from the last meeting in late May, a motion made by Democratic board member Zaya Oshana, in hopes approval of the state’s budget on June 7 would give the district enough of a windfall to retain the positions. While the district did receive ad-

A member of Leadership Martial Arts in Plantsville on the cusp of getting her black belt, Sobkiewicz, 16, had to commit to a service project to give back to the community. While she thought of doing a food drive, or a toy

‘Coach K’ celebrated at Franciscan Sports Banquet

SOUTHINGTON For 46 years, Mike “Coach K” Krzyzewski and Jim Calhoun battled one another in the college basketball arena as players on the court and calling the shots from the bench.

But their competitive back and forth never resulted in animosity and their storied rivalry blossomed into a decades-long friendship defined by mutual admiration and respect.

“We became good friends when I was at Northeastern, [and] he was at West Point,” Calhoun said of Krzyzewski. “I moved to UConn, he moved to Duke, and we ended up playing in big games against each other and our loyalty to each other and friendship has been great. Our friendship grew very deep, very long for a lot of years. ”

On June 6, the duo reunited at the Aqua Turf Club ballroom for the 37th annual Franciscan Sports Banquet and Silent Auction, hosted by the Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist, alongside five additional honorees, as Krzyzewski was celebrated for his contributions to community service and faith.

Krzyzewski was the recipient of the Saint Francis Award in what Franciscan Life Center Executive Director Barbara Johnson labeled a recognition of his piety and moral character throughout his coaching career. “He’s being honored for his values.” Johnson said. “Christian values in athletics, that’s what the St. Francis Award is about.”

Krzyzewski made his way to the dinner thanks to an in-

vite from Calhoun, whose involvement with the Franciscan Life Center earned him a namesake award also handed out at last week’s gathering.

Krzyzewski reflected on the celebration, recalling his years of camaraderie with

Calhoun and relishing the time spent beside an old friend, while promoting an embrace of what he described as a virtuous attitude and its ability to attain success.

SOUTHINGTON – A Meriden insurance company is among the employers that have moved to the former Clark Brothers Bolt Factory building, which went from a derelict Canal Street structure 17 years ago to a full commercial hub.

Bongiovanni Insurance & Financial, formerly on Research Parkway in Meriden, merged with FLP Financial of Southington to form Nesso Group. FLP Financial was in the Clark Brothers building and the combined company’s space was increased by 19,000 square feet. The two companies merged at the beginning of 2022.

“It’s pretty remarkable how they resurrected the building,” said Trey Bongiovanni, Nesso Group senior vice president. “The office space was incredible.”

The aesthetic appeal has drawn a host of other businesses to the former factory.

Bruce Staebler, the building’s owner, has two of his ventures at the building as well, Kinsmen Brewing Company and Signature Brand Factory.

Staebler is among the owners of Clark Brothers Distilling, a company looking to take the last vacant space in the building and complement the beer brewer with whiskeys and bourbons.

Staebler said the building offers something that’s just not possible in modern office space. “You’ve got this old, historic, really incredible space that you just can’t duplicate when you do new. These hand-hewn beams, these exposed beams, these skylights everywhere,” he said. “You’ve got that great old historic environment combined with state-of-theart infrastructure in terms of WiFi and data.”

The variety of businesses, such as a salon, and the adjacent Farmington Canal Heritage Trail have contributed to the building being more than just a place to work.

bids them from selling in high-traffic areas.

The law is named after Wallingford resident Tristan Barhorst, 10, who was struck and killed by a vehicle after buying ice cream from a truck on June 12, 2020. The incident involved a teenage driver.

Barhorst was a member of Leadership Martial Arts alongside Sobkiewicz. Both were part of the studio’s Special Winning Attitude Team, also known as SWAT, teaching classes to the younger children and acting as role models to the rest of the dojo.

With summer fast approaching and ice cream trucks back on the roads, Sobkiewicz wanted to inform younger drivers about the law and remind everyone about the need to be cautious around all trucks not just ice cream trucks for the safety of those who might be crossing the road. Her advocacy efforts got Tristan’s Law officially adopted as part of the curriculum of The Next Street driving school, which has 80 locations across the state. The response from those in the community Sobkiewicz has reached out to about the law has been positive.

“People are interested, and they agree that this law needs to be better represented and more people need to know about it because it's so important,” Sobkiewicz said. She and Tristan’s mother, Christi Carrano, worked together to make the brochures they distributed around town. For both of them, working on the project has been an emotional experience.

“It was very emotional. I've tried my hardest to stay in contact with Mrs. Carrano, she's just an amazing person and their family is just perfect. I originally just messaged her about it and she said how she's speechless,” Sobkiewicz said.

“After I found out that I got the law into the curriculum for Next Street, the driver's

education business, I asked her if we could meet up in person because I wanted to

tell her the news, that way is more personal. Obviously, I got to hug it out and cry.”

“I'm overwhelmed,” Carrano said. “She's such a sincere young lady, and her love for Tristan, to see that love and to see that pour over in her wanting to make a difference, just fills our hearts, so, so very much.”

Sobkiewicz and Barhorst saw each other often, being a part of the same team at

their dojo and joining on the same day. Sobkiewicz has now been a part of the dojo for seven years, and Barhorst has left a mark on the studio. In his honor, Leadership Martial Arts named their demonstration unit Team Tsunami, after Barhorst’s nickname, and gives out the Tsunami Award of Excellence every year, which Carrano presents.

Sobkiewicz was the first ever to receive the accolade. There even is an honorary black belt with Barhorst’s name on it inside the studio.

Leadership Martial Arts tries to teach its students more than just self-defense, but also being members of the community and leaders for

tomorrow as such they require a community service project as part of the process of getting a black belt. When hearing about Sobkiewicz’s project, Sensei and owner Rick Griffin was moved.

“I think it's great. I think it shows the love that they had for each other as classmates and teammates. I think it shows that, especially being on the SWAT team, being

classmates have really brought them together and it's more than just someone you see once a week, twice a week. They really became very tight-knit,” Griffin said. “I think Lydia has always had a very special trait about her She's going to go on to do anything that she wants to do. She's that type of kid that is really going to be successful.”

For everyone who knew Tristan Barhorst, they are positively moved by his memory and continue to do work to honor him. Carrano continues to advocate for the law and for driver safety around all parked vehicles.

In 2021, U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal introduced a federal version of the legislation as a bill in Congress.

“I wouldn't say it's my work. I would say it's our son's work from Heaven and he's doing great things, and hopefully he's educating drivers, not only just to slow down and cautiously pass an ice cream truck, but hopefully he's reminding all drivers to slow down and cautiously pass any stopped vehicle,” Carrano said. “We are just so thankful; our hearts are full of gratitude to Lydia for creating such a beautiful, concise and informative brochure.”

After dedicating so much of her life to karate, Sobkiewicz said she is looking to carry forward the values she learned at Leadership Martial Arts and from Barhorst through her career at Southington High School and beyond.

“I just think that karate and Tristan have had such a big impact on my life with learning how to deal with things and looking at things in such a different way,” she said.

The cemetery is located across from Plainville High School.

During the town’s earliest history, the “Old East Street” Burying Grounds was the only cemetery in what was then the Plainville section of the Town of Farmington (Plainville was incorporated as a separate municipality in 1869). The oldest grave on East Street dates from 1766. Veterans from several conflicts, including the American Revolution and French and Indian War, are buried

there. Also, many of the names found in these burying grounds will be familiar to Plainville residents; names such as Hills, Cowles, Hamlin and Whiting.

Like West Cemetery, which opened in 1845, the “Old East Street” Burying Grounds is maintained by the Plainville Cemetery Association.

The public is asked to register for the June 27 historical society event in advance by sending an email to plvhistorical@gmail.com. Include your name, contact information and the number of people planning to attend.

Class of 1973

The 50th reunion planning committee for the Plainville High School Class of 1973 is looking for classmates. If you are a 1973 PHS graduate, or know of one, email contact information to crczellecz@ comcast.net.

“Anything that’s value-based has a chance at succeeding and sustaining, so it’s not just Christian values, it’s values – values of integrity, courage, respect, service, trust, loyalty. Those are great, great things,” he said. The dinner brought together a tapestry of coaches, athletes, Franciscans and basketball fanatics in a fundraiser auction and raffle event with proceeds from the evening benefiting the Franciscan Life Center and Franciscan Home Care and Hospice Care initiatives.

David and Dianna Hunter, whose three children Aaralyn, Leo and Aniela posed beaming for a photo with Krzyzewski and cradling a signed basketball, drove in from Cheshire for a chance to meet the collegiate athletics icon and in support of the Franciscan sisters.

The Hunters have a familial tie to the sisters, with David’s sister being a member herself.

Dianna Hunter said her husband and she have attended the banquet in years past, looking to donate to her sister-in-law’s organization.

“Any penny that ever goes to these women and this community is spent in the community for the betterment of humanity,” David Hunter said. “They give themselves, from morning to night, to other people. They’re the most selfless people you will ever meet in your life.”

Additional honorees included William Ghio, Tim Tolokan, Gretchen Rossi and Krzyzewski’s wife Mickie Krzyzewski.

Ghio, the president of WMG & Sons and a Dunkin’ franchisee, was awarded the Jim Calhoun Community Service Award.

Tolokan was the former associate athletic director at the University of Connecticut and received the Dean of Sports Award. Rossi is the public relations director for Franciscan Life Center, Franciscan Home Care and Franciscan Hospice Care. She received the Mother Shaun Appreciation Award. Mickie Krzyzewski is the co-founder of the Emily K Foundation and received the Saint Clare Award.

Special Olympics Connecticut was also recognized.

dition funding, it was not as much as administrators had hoped.

With the budget slashed by the Board of Finance, the district had to find ways to account for $1,550,231 from its budget. The six-position reduction was one of those measures, with administra-

tors seeing it as a last resort because they couldn’t find any other viable alternatives for cuts.

“The problem I’ve had, and I’ve had a problem from the beginning, is that we were presented with a budget from the superintendent and before it even went to the Board of Finance, this board cut it. We cut our own budget. I’ve never seen us cut our own budget before,” Oshana said.

“It was $622,000, roughly, of cuts, before we sent it to the finance board That would have been enough to keep these teachers in place,” Oshana added.

Democrats Terri Carmody and David Derynoski also voted against the revised budget.

The cuts made at the June 8 meeting will not result in layoffs but consolidate existing teaching roles in the sixth-grade class. The BOE determined this was an acceptable alternative, since the sixth-grade class is poised to shrink over the next several years, before a sharp projected increase five

or more years out. By then administrators hope to have added the positions back into the budget.

However, the teachers who appeared at last week’s BOE meeting to advocate for the preservation of the positions stated that the impact on students transitioning from elementary to middle school would be detrimental to their learning experience. The teaching positions that would be consolidated would be from the 6C block, which is a group of students who may have more difficulties learning or have social anxiety, and who benefit from smaller class sizes.

Class sizes in the sixth-grade are expected to go from 16 to 18 students, on average, into the mid-20s, which puts them on a more consistent level with other class sizes in the district. Though as a consequence, as administrators have warned, this would mean less individualized attention for students and a higher workload for teachers.

“The impact this will have on our teachers is not without cost. Our impacted teachers are paying for it. The added stress in an occupation that only seems to be becoming more stressful each year is a cost not listed on your balance sheet,” said Susan Walsh, one of the sixth-grade teachers who would be affected by the decision.

“When our students need more, we’d be giving them less.”

Another sixth-grade teacher, Cristi Duprey, said, “Having three teams at both middle schools in town has allowed teachers and counselors the ability to ease the transition for our students. By taking that away you’re taking all that burden on fewer adults and adding to the already elevated stress and anxiety of 11-year-olds. And let’s just forget about the research that says smaller class sizes lead to more individualized attention, better test scores, less discipline issues, and a more positive school climate. All educators know large class sizes are not conducive to learning.”

The school board’s final meeting, until just before the start of the next school year, will be on Thursday, June 22.
