COMMENCEMENT 2020

Grads urged to embrace, not fear, the unexpected By Michael Gagne Record-Journal staff

Helena Yawin, valedictorian of Plainville High School's class of 2020, speaking behind a makeshift podium Friday night set up on the edge of her school's parking lot, issued a challenge to her fellow classmates.

“As we step into this next phase of our lives, we have the chance to decide what we want the world to be,” Yawin said. “We can ignore these issues and pretend that everything will return to normal, or we can rise to the challenge and mold the world into what we want it to be.

The May 25 death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man, at the hands of the Minneapolis Police Department has sparked nationwide protests which show no signs of dissipating.

Plainville Town Councilor Christopher Wazorko told the 160-member Plainville High School Class of 2020: “You've been tested far more than anyone expected when the year began and you have aced it.” Photos by Patrick Matthews

Resident Sarah Doyle helped spearhead the gathering, which included a one-mile march from the Municipal Center to Norton Park, where various speakers addressed the crowd.

“Not knowing what's going to happen next can lead to several outcomes: panic and worry, or it gives us the opportunity to reframe the narrative,” the valedictorian said, directly referencing how life has been altered due to the pandemic. “.. [D]espite how much was changed because of the virus, all of us were still able

to form our own memories and even have a graduation,” she said. Plainville Town Councilor Christopher Wazorko, whose own daughter Olivia was among the graduates, acknowledged the challenges posed the past few months.

Shortly after she spoke, Yawin and her fellow graduates, 160 in all, would approach in vehicles tables set up along the edge of the parking lot, where staff members waited to hand out diplomas. Graduates, wearing their traditional blue and white caps and gowns, then stepped out of the vehicles to retrieve them. The sounds of cheering and applause were replaced by the honking of car horns, as graduates walked back into their vehicles, which then drove under a blue-and-white balloon arch.

Class salutatorian Christopher St. Lawrence alluded to some disappointments posed by the abrupt ending of in-person classes and other school activities. He specifically referred to a jazz band performance that he and fellow band members had diligently rehearsed for that ultimately would not happen. St. Lawrence described such an abrupt ending to rehearsals without a final performance as having felt “incomplete.” But, he urged his fellow graduates to not to dwell on the past few months and to “remember that you haven't peaked yet.” “Everything we've done so far isn't the final product,” he said, noting other life milestones, which he referred to as “ramps,” are still to come. Plainville High School band director Dominic Talotta told graduates “no class has ever been more equipped” to face life obstacles as theirs.

Group to focus on struggles caused by COVID-19 The Community Foundation of Greater New Britain is making changes to its Catalyst Giving Circle in order to make meetings safer for members and the topic more relevant during the COVID-19 crisis. The Catalyst Fund brings people who care about

Berlin, New Britain, Plainville and Southington together to experience philanthropy first-hand. With a modest donation of $50 for first-time “Discovery” members and $250 for annual renewals, members (individuals and couples) pool their resources to learn about is-

sues facing our communities, jointly determine grants to nonprofit organizations tackling those issues, and meet new people who share a commitment to our communities. Three times per year, Catalyst Fund members gather to learn about a member-chosen issue facing

their community, and to consider funding requests from charitable organizations addressing the issue. The year concludes with a collective vote to award a grant of up to $12,500 to a chosen grantee. Earlier this year, the Catalyst membership selected com-

munity gardens to be the 2020 topic of discussion. Due to the many issues brought on since the beginning of the state shut down, the membership voted to change this year’s topic to community needs resulting from the pandemic. See Catalyst, A11

Are we seeing the end of our free country?" “If that isn't reason enough to attend this vigil I don't know what would be,” he said. Also in Cheshire, hundreds turned out for a “Black Lives Matter” March. Participants walked along Route 10 from Bartlem Park to Town Hall. Review Your Estate Plan Basics

From A6

Protesters carried signs with messages such as “Black Lives Matter,” “Stop killing us,” “Viva la revolucion” and “No Justice, No Peace.”

The Covid-19 pandemic has offered a great reminder to review the elements of your estate plan.

Southington Police Chief Jack Daly, who attended the march, said it occurred without incident.

Below are some key items to consider. Set up a call with Ericson, Scalise & Mangan, PC to consider any specific details related to your own plan.

“They voiced their opinion on certain issues. We at the police department defend their right to protest,” the chief said. “It’s a First Amendment right.”

Review your health care proxy and power of attorney: Be sure you are comfortable with your choices of who will make medical and financial decisions on your behalf if you are unable to do so. For each, have a back-up in place in case the first person is unavailable. Now is the time to have new documents created if yours no longer apply. These choices apply for any decisions made for you while you are still alive.

In Meriden, rallies occurred on back-to-back days. The first drew some 1,000 people to the city green. Meriden resident Michael Valentin said he was surprised by the turnout and hopes it will unite and inspire people to work on bettering themselves, especially police. "This is history right now … this is our history, that we get to tell our children," he said. See Protestors, A9

Revise your will: Decide whether you want to keep the executor you have named for your estate, and make sure you name a back-up. This person will be responsible for validating your will when you die, handling your affairs and filing your income and estate tax returns. Be sure you have included a guardian for any minor children, as well as back-up for that guardian.

A scene from the Southington rally.

FLANDERS WEST APARTMENTS 1–3 Darling Street, Southington, CT

Review your trust: Take a look at the beneficiaries of your trust. Decide whether you want them to be given the income outright or over time, or if you want to have the funds held for them in a trust, especially if the beneficiaries are minors. Ensure that you feel good about your choice of trustee, whether it is an individual, such as your attorney or accountant, or a corporate entity, such as a bank.

Make sure your trust is funded: It is helpful for you to fund your trust while you are alive, because that way your assets can be managed to support you while you’re alive if you are unable to make decisions on your own. It also avoids a court’s involvement to administer the trust after your death.

Painted Rock Club

Hall nominations

Plainville Painted Rock Club has been painting Kindness Rocks to bring smiles and peace during the pandemic. Rocks are hidden around town, and in parks especially. Some have been placed on top of fire hydrants so that they are easier to find.

The Plainville Sports Hall of Fame committee is looking for nominees to consider for induction. Nominations can be submitted via plainvillesports.com, or mailed to Plainville Sports Hall of Fame, P.O. Box 593, Plainville, CT 06062. The committee asks that newspaper articles/scrapbooks support nominations. For more information, contact Byron Treado at 860836-3377 or Mike Bakaysa at 860-573-8015.

Once a rock is found, the finder may keep it, or rehide it. Finders are encouraged to take a photo of their discovery and the club will post it on its Facebook page, PLV CT Rocks.

“Shifting the topic for this year is a great illustration of how philanthropy can be flexible to respond to community needs. Members overwhelmingly voted to change topic due to the unprecedented struggles presented by the pandemic and will make an impact with its grant awarded in the fall,” said Joeline Wruck from the CFGNB.

The first meeting will take place on Thursday, June 25, 6 to 7:30 p.m., via Zoom video conference in order to follow social distancing guidelines and keep members safe while still participating in meaningful discussion. Census workers will begin door-knocking in August Over the next decade, lawmakers, business owners, and many others will use 2020 Census data to make critical decisions. The results will show where communities need new schools, new clinics, new roads, and more services for families, older adults and children. The results will also inform how hundreds of billions of dollars in federal funding are allocated to more than 100 programs, including Medicaid, Head Start, block grants for community mental health services and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, also known as SNAP. In short, your response matters. Your answers are so important that the Census Bureau will come knocking on your door to count people

living in your household. Because of the pandemic, the Census Bureau is adapting or delaying some operations to protect the health and safety of staff and the public while still making sure the

SPREADING A POSITIVE MESSAGE

Adrianna Cruz Vasquez.

Brianna Ballinger.

MSP assistant principal Aimee Roberts.

Students and staff at the Middle School of Plainville spread cheer and a positive “You Rock” message to others recently. At the start of the project, in mid-May, 30 MSP students randomly received a stone at their doorstep with the words “You Rock” painted on it. Students were then tasked with paying it forward by passing the stone on to others. The youngsters could either deliver the stone to fellow students at home, or virtually, by taking a photo of the stone.
