Teacher of the Year ‘incredibly resilient’

Model students are recognized

Plainville Community Schools named Plainville Community Schools Library Information Teacher Cindi Giantonio 2021-2022 Teacher of the Year. Giantonio was nominated by district colleagues Erica Kriscenski and Alexandra Hurlock.

The students are honored, along with their family members and guests, at a staff Voisine meeting where they are awarded The Student Rocks a book and preAward was estabsented the Student lished by three Rocks plaque teachers in 2010 as where their names a way to honor are engraved. Giantonio has been an educator for 31 years, serving most recently as the Library Information Teacher for Frank T. Wheeler Elementary School. Prior to taking that post in 2019, she served as a second-grade teacher at Wheeler, beginning in 2002. When asked about her philosophy of teaching, Giantonio explained, “I believe that learning is as essential to a student’s well-being as food and shelter. It is my responsibility as a teacher to provide my students with educational experiences that are engaging, meaningful, and inspire the life-long love of learning. This learning is a process that incorporates exploration, collaboration, and reflection that lead to self-discovery. Each student who walks through my classroom door is a unique and special individual. I embrace their individuality and diversity and create an environment that encourages all learners to meet their fullest potential.” “My students are given access to information and are provided the tools to grow their knowledge through the act of investigation,” Giantonio continued. “I hold my students to the highest standards and require those same expectations for my-

students they believe are worthy of the award.

Plainville High School students Katherine Gibson and Kyle Voisine were named recipients of the second semester Student Rocks Award.

My students are eager, active learners and they rise to the occasion.” As Teacher of the Year, Giantonio is a candidate for Connecticut’s 2021 Teacher of the Year Program. Each district Teacher of the Year will be recognized later this year by the Connecticut Department of Education.

“Mrs. Giantonio is a perfect representative of the qualities that come to mind when hearing the title, Plainville Community Schools Teacher of the Year,” Superintendent of Schools Steven LePage stated. “Mrs. Giantonio’s peers describe her as talented and committed, positive, flexible, helpful and supportive, highly dedicated to student learning and care, kind to all, and incredibly resilient. During his senior year at PHS, Straub did job shadowing at the New Britain Herald. This exposure to journalism contributed to him writing stories that highlighted many different athletic programs at Plainville High School and developed in him a passion for writing. Straub attended Northeastern University in Boston, studying journalism. He worked for the school newspaper covering Northeastern soccer, swimming and ice hockey. After graduating in 2001, Straub found himself back at the New Britain Herald. He was the beat writer for the Plainville football program, the CCSU Blue Devils and the New Britain Rock Cats. Straub served as a writer and editor for the Herald for over a decade. While he has moved on from the newspaper, his love for Plainville athletics has never diminished. He can still be found attending PHS sporting events.

“Congratulations to Katherine and Kyle on being selected by the PHS staff for this wonderful recognition of character, and their positive influence on their community during their time at Plainville High School,” Superintendent of Schools Steven LePage stated. “It is clear that these two students embody the characteristics celebrated by this award.”

“This measure is comprehensive, protects our children and the most vulnerable in our communities, and will be viewed as a national model for regulating the adult-use cannabis marketplace,” Lamont said in a statement, explaining it was “fitting” that the bill was finally passed on the 50th anniversary of a speech made by the late President Richard Nixon declaring a war on drugs.

LePage went on to commend Voisine on his decision to enlist in the Marine Corps.

“I look forward to signing the bill and moving beyond this terrible period of incarceration and injustice,” Lamont said.

“Kyle, thank you for your commitment, bravery and service to our country,” he said.

Patricia Ann “Pat” Cancelli PLAINVILLE- It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Patricia Ann “Pat” Cancelli, 74, after a long, fierce battle with lung cancer. A longtime resident of Plainville, she passed away on Monday, June 14, 2021, at the Atrium of Rocky Hill. Pat was the loving and devoted wife of 37 years to Sarah “Sally” Cobrain, of Plainville, with whom she shared many wonderful, happy adventures. Pat was born on November 25, 1946 in New Britain, daughter of the late William R. and Gertrude (Proulx) Cancelli. She grew up in New Britain and graduated from New Britain High School. She worked for The Travelers for over 9 years before continuing her career as a Reinsurance Analyst at Aetna, where she spent 31 years. Pat was an active member of the Plainville Senior Center, where she established many strong and lasting friendships and participated in a variety of activities, including rounds of pool, card games, and many trips and events. She served as the Treasurer of the Plainville chapter of AARP for over 5 years and devoted much of her time to helping others. Pat was a real presence wherever she went and was very wellliked. She was generous, loyal, hardworking, conscientious, and sassy with a great sense of humor. Pat enjoyed gardening and baking, and everyone looked forward to receiving loaves of her famous pumpkin bread several times a year. In addition, she and Sally excelled as

longtime players in the East Hartford Slow Pitch Softball League, Pat as a pitcher and Sally backing her up as an infielder. They also loved traveling to national parks and historic landmarks around the U.S. and Canada, and enjoyed quiet times by the ocean, hiking, neighborhood walks and long sits on their front porch greeting neighbors passing by. Favorite spots to be together were Wells Beach, Maine and New London, New Hampshire. Pat loved her wife, her family, and her friends with all her heart. They will deeply miss her generous heart and bold personality, and will cherish the lasting memories of times shared. In addition to her wife, Sally, Pat is survived by her brother William “Bill” Cancelli (Carol Diana), her mother-in-law Ann Cobrain, her sister-in-law Candace Doersch (Robert Doersch), her brotherin-law David Cobrain (Valerie Valentine), and her nieces and nephews Philip Cancelli (Mary Raffey), Cheri Cancellli, Melissa Cancelli, Karen Doersch, and Carl Doersch; as well as a host of friends. She was predeceased by her brother John Cancelli and his wife, Carol Cancelli. A celebration of Pat’s life will occur at a later date. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in Pat’s memory can be made to the Plainville Senior Center, 200 East Street, Plainville, CT 06062. The staff at Plainville Funeral Home extends their gratitude to Pat’s family for their trust. Bringing vaccination shots to employees By Devin Leith-Yessian Record-Journal staff

SOUTHINGTON — Long and irregular hours have always made it difficult for servers, chefs and bartenders to find time off, so public health officials designed a vaccine clinic at Smokin’ With Chris that would bring the shot to them. “A lot of them work many, many hours and when they walk out of here, they’re just too tired to do it,” said Chris Conlon, owner of Smokin’ With Chris. He partnered with Hartford Healthcare to administer the doses and the Plainville-Southington Regional Health District to help get the word out to other restaurants. With no registration required, restaurant workers and the public alike could stop in on Monday to get the shot and have a free meal during the 15 minute observation period after
