Police promote domestic violence awareness
20TH ANNUAL MEMORIAL WALK
According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, on average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. During one year, this equates to more than 10 million women and men.
The 20th Annual Helen & Danny Coughlin Memorial Walk — led by ESPN’s Jay Harris — took place Saturday, Oct. 9 at Norton Park. The walk is the largest fundraiser for PARC, Inc., which offers family-centered services for people with developmental disabilities. Danny Coughlin was an original PARC member from when the non-profit was founded more than 60 years ago. His mother, Helen Coughlin, started the group with other Plainville parents. PARC. Inc., Facebook
NCADV’s vision is to create a culture where domestic violence is not tolerated and where society empowers victims and survivors while holding abusers accountable. The group’s Day of Unity, held in 1981, evolved into Domestic Violence Awareness Month, which is marked each October. See Domestic violence, A10

“This new pedestrian safety law is an important step to keep everyone safe, and ultimately save lives,” said Department of Transportation Commissioner Joseph Giulietti in a statement on the new legislation. Pedestrian fatalities and injuries have been rising sharply, Giulietti said in the statement, with a 55 percent increase in deaths between 2009 and 2018. The new law also prohibits the act of “dooring” — when a vehicle occupant opens their door without checking for bicyclists, pedestrians or passing traffic.

Previously drivers were required to yield to those who were in the process of crossing at a crosswalk. The new provision maintains the existing $500 fine for motorists who fail to properly yield the right of way.
Bristol resident Mary Fuller said she already waves to drivers, who mostly stop as they see her approaching the crosswalks along the trail. She regularly goes for fourmile walks along the trail through Southington, where she grew up, and has found that traffic along the roads it intersects seems to be getting busier.
