School system honors veterans By Steven LePage
Nine years ago, a calendar change was implemented for Plainville Community Schools, making Veterans Day a full school day. When this change was initially presented to the Board of Education for consideration, it was done with a commitment to using the time to further educate our students on the significance of Veterans Day, with an emphasis on the importance of honoring our nation’s veterans. That commitment has continued each year. This year our elementary schools held virtual Veterans Day programs while our middle and high school held in person events. Our creative school-based Veterans Day planning committees curated a variety of creative, thoughtful and educational video, slideshow and presentation segments capturing the comprehensive programming, activities, ceremonies and tributes woven throughout the day on Nov. 11, together with in person activities at our secondary level. At the elementary level, students and staff developed programs that creatively and respectfully honored veterans near and far. A variety of video tributes, readings, musical performances, and

Join with Baha’is, spread kindness On Nov. 27, members of the Baha’i Faith around the world commemorated the centenary of the passing of Abdu’l-Baha, a central figure of the faith. The Baha’i Faith is a world religion whose teachings and principles center on the oneness of humanity. Abdu’l-Baha was the eldest son of Baha’u’llah, the Prophet-Founder of the Baha’i Faith. rized Abdu’l-Baha as an interpreter of the Baha’i Writings and instructed all to turn to Abdu’l-Baha as a perfect exemplar of the spirit and teachings of the Baha’i Faith. In His life, Abdu’l-Baha demonstrated loving kindness, selfless spirit of service, and generosity, especially towards those in need. In this spirit, the Baha’is of Plainville are honoring the Centenary of Abdu’l-Baha’s passing by performing acts of service and kindness during the month of December, and they invite all to join in this effort. Acts of kindness and service may include checking on a neighbor, donating items to the Plainville Food Pantry, assisting a senior citizen, sending a thoughtful card or note, preparing a meal or baking for a person in need, donating toys for Christmas, giving money to a charity, or even just holding the door
and greeting someone warmly. Simple acts can be so impactful. The Baha’is of Plainville invite you to post on social media about giving or receiving kindness using the hashtags #planvillegives or #plainvilleloves. If you would like to contact the Baha’is of Plainville, email plainville.ct.bahais@ gmail.com or call 860-7472918. — Press Release

works of art were created and shared with the school communities and families. Each school also created visual displays of and in honor of veterans. Following Veterans Day, the Wheeler School Student Council held a “Pajama Day”
on Nov. 12 to raise money for Veterans Rally Point, a program which supports the transition from military to civilian life. At the Middle School of Plainville, students and staff arrived to see the enormous American flag on display outside of the building, thanks to this annual tradition made possible by the
Plainville Fire Department. On Veterans Day morning, students and their veteran family members participated in an “indoor parade” through the beautifully-decorated hallways where students and staff cheered, waved flags and held posters honoring the visiting veterans, while patriotic music filled the air.

Photographs of the veterans were also collected and displayed on MSP’s Wall of Honor in the atrium. The parade was held to honor the sacrifices made by veterans and to reflect on the heroism of those who have served the United States of America. The special visitors were treated to “Grab and Go” goodie bags prepared by faculty and staff members, and supported by the Middle School’s PTC. Plainville High School created a video montage of student and staff family member veterans, a tradition that began during the last school year. While each Veterans Day program was unique, all five schools preserved the common goal of providing meaningful, respectful, educational events, activities, and programming in honor of veterans both locally and globally. As with each Veterans Day in Plainville Community Schools, the entire school community was filled with pride and admiration as we celebrated both virtually and in person, those who serve and have served our country and fought for the freedom we enjoy today.

Uber discount is available to residents As traffic fatalities continue to rise, the Connecticut Department of Transportation Office of Highway Safety has announced a $10 discount code for Uber, as a way to encourage people who consume alcohol or other impairing substances to use ridehailing instead of putting themselves and others on the road at risk by getting behind the wheel. The discount code, SAVETHENIGHTCT, will be available through Jan. 14, 2022, between the hours of 5 p.m. and 4 a.m. This program was made possible thanks to a grant from the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), in partnership with Uber. Connecticut is one of only five states to receive this grant. “Traffic fatalities are increasing at an unprecedented rate,” said Connecticut Department of
Transportation Commissioner Joseph Giulietti. “It is a real crisis. If you, or someone you know, needs a sober ride — please, opt for a ride, and use this $10 Uber discount code to save the night — and potentially save a life.” Ride-hailing services have been shown to reduce crash and impaired driving rates by offering an alternative to getting behind the wheel impaired. “We are pleading with Connecticut drivers to be more vigilant and more responsible than ever,” Giulietti added. “We need to do everything we can to stop this trend.” To redeem the $10 Uber discount, enter the code SAVETHENIGHTCT into the Uber app. For more information, visit facebook.com/CThighwaysafety/. — Press Release

CIAC: Let the winter games begin Record-Journal staff
track races.
CHESHIRE — A day after completing a successful fall season that saw relatively few team-wide disruptions from COVID-19, the CIAC released its formal guidance for the upcoming winter season.
Masks won’t be required during competition in indoor track field events, wrestling, swimming and gymnastics regardless of vaccination status. Masks are required for everyone in all indoor settings outside of actual competition, such as in locker rooms and on buses and on the bench.
By and large, it reiterates the plan the CIAC unofficially released a few weeks ago. The season will start on time in all winter sports. It can include multi-team events and interstate competitions. There will be a full season and there will be state postseason championships.

Partially vaccinated or unvaccinated coaches and athletes who are a close contact of a known COVID-19 case will have to quarantine for at least 10 days (with a negative test on Day 8 or later) or a full 14 days without a test. All coaches and athletes who experience COVID-19 symptoms after a close contact with a known case — regardless of vaccination status — will have to quarantine for 10 days (with a negative test on Day 8 or later) or 14 days without a test. Weekly testing for athletes who are not yet fully vaccinated is recommended. As in past seasons, the CIAC plan is subject to change based on changes in COVID metrics. The 2021-22 winter plan is a far cry from a year ago, when COVID was in its second surge and schools, along with sports, shut down until the middle of January. A winter sports season was staged, but it was a month late in starting, it was abbreviated and there was no state postseason. Wrestling was canceled all together and indoor track severely limited because multi-team events were not allowed.

COVID report From A1
According to the state report, as of Nov. 28, 354 people in Connecticut were hospitalized with laboratoryconfirmed COVID-19. Among the hospitalized, 262 — 74 percent — were not fully vaccinated. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, COVID-19 symptoms may appear 2 to 14 days after exposure to the virus. Symptoms may include fever or chills, coughing, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, and diarrhea. At a media briefing Monday, Hartford HealthCare officials told reporters the much-talked-about omicron variant of COVID-19 was a concern because of mutations in the virus’s spiked protein, but said they feel existing vaccines and boosters would provide some protection. “Even if not 100 percent, it should provide some protection,” said Dr. Ulysses Wu, Hartford Healthcare’s chief
epidemiologist. “There could be some mutations that could allow it to evade the immune system and testing, but I don’t believe that is the case right now.” As winter approaches, health officials encouraged people to wear masks indoors and social distance if among unfamiliar people. They are also encouraging people to get their first vaccine and boosters if their second shot was more than six months ago. “The more transmission we have the more likely variants are going to pop up,” Wu said. — Citizen report

CARING KIDS
Obituaries Joan Litteral
The school district’s Kids in the Middle program held two events in October. In the first, entitled, “KIM Cares,” participants made crafts to donate to local nursing homes. The second event was a tour of the Newington Humane Society. To attend the tour, students brought a donation for the pet food pantry. PLAINVILLE Joan (Giroux) Litteral, 71, of Plainville, passed away peacefully with her daughters by her side on Friday, November 19, 2021. Born in New Britain on October 26, 1950, she was one of two children to the late Armand and Elizabeth (Deminski) Giroux. A loving and devoted mother, she raised her two daughters in Plainville. Joanie was the office manager at New Britain Heat Treating for 30+ years where her co-workers also considered her “Mom”. An avid traveler, she enjoyed cruises and annual trips to Maine. Joanie loved theater and was a faithful patron of CT Cabaret for many years. After her retirement, this social butterfly became a friendly and familiar face at the Plainville Senior Center where she made many new friends and enjoyed spending her much deserved free time. Remembered for her bright spirit, infectious laugh and affection for Alan Jackson, she will be missed dearly by her family and many friends. Joanie was generous in her contributions to several non-profit organizations, and may be remembered in lieu of flowers with donations to Plainville Community Food Pantry. A celebration of Joanie’s life will be held on Saturday December 4, 2021 at 12:00 p.m. at Plainville Funeral Home, 81 Broad St, Plainville.
