A day of reflection By Steven LePage

Seven years ago, a calendar change was implemented for Plainville Community Schools, making Veterans Day a full school day. When this change was initially presented to the Board of Education for consideration, it was done with a commitment to using the time to further educate our students on the significance of Veterans Day, with an emphasis on the importance of honoring our nation’s veterans. That commitment has continued each year and is demonstrated in the exceptional programming that takes place annually in each of our five schools.

Letters to the Editor Drink Wiser Editor : As we gather over holiday feasts this time of year, many of us choose to enjoy some holiday spirits. Before you ring in the New Year with friends and family, we ask that you resolve to enjoy responsibly and “Drink Wiser” this holiday season. Budweiser’s responsible drinking campaign, “Drink Wiser,” promotes simple drinking behaviors that can lift your holiday cheer while also keeping our community safe. If you plan to toast the season, remember these two resolutions to keep everyone’s spirits bright: 1. Plan ahead for safe rides; 2. Hydrate between beers.

Since the launch of Anheuser-Busch’s first responsible drinking campaign in 1982, the brewer and its wholesaler partners, including Dichello Distributors Inc., have invested more than $1 billion in national advertising campaigns and community-based programs to promote alcohol responsibility and prevent drunk driving and harmful drinking behaviors.

OPPORTUNITIES ABOUND

From A1

A group of students from the Middle School of Plainville along with faculty members Kim Coyle and Camille Westfall attended the Future Workforce Opportunities Fair at the Hartford Convention Center on Nov. 20. The event focused on educating middle school students about the many opportunities and careers available in the local aerospace industry. Students had the opportunity to speak with more than 90 local aerospace firms.

tures with the jolly couple and enjoy cookies and apple cider, or to set off on the Holiday Stroll around downtown. The Friday event runs from 5 to 8 p.m, though some businesses start their festivities earlier or continue them into the weekend. Around a dozen businesses and organizations are participating in the stroll this year, helping light up downtown with decorations in their storefronts and running raffles for gift cards and baskets. Also, residents can see the area from a new perspective on a horse-drawn carriage ride looping around from Bolo Bakery.

Plainville High School hosted the 8th annual Career Day program for students on Nov. 22. More than 50 speakers covering nearly 40 career sectors participated in the event. Speakers included representatives from a variety of fields, including engineering, finance, legal, trades, armed forces, medical, sports management, visual arts, and more. Many of the speakers are PHS alum.

“Auntie Claus” will be hosting the Plainville Historic Center’s stop on the stroll.

Hubina said the chamber hopes the stroll will introduce residents to some new businesses. “It definitely gets new people into their doors and we help create more traffic for them,” she said. “Once you get new people into your doors, usually you can get them coming back.” With garland and dormant lights draped across the fixtures in front of her business, Donna Theriault, owner of Studio 466, said she’s excited to see the lights switched on and downtown come to life. Since Theriault moved her salon to East Main Street from East Street, she feels the business has become more a part of the community thanks to various downtown events hosted by the town. “I think it just makes it feel like there’s a sense of community. It’s nice to see how many families are in town and it’s fun for the kids,” she said. “It gives you that small-town feel.” dleithyessian@ record-journal.com 203-317-2317 Twitter: @leith_yessian
