Sloper Plunge raises $100K for campers By Faith Williams Record-Journal staff

SOUTHINGTON — Over 200 participants and 1,500 spectators gathered at Camp Sloper for the 17th annual Sloper Plunge Saturday afternoon. The event brings teams from the community together to jump into the chilly waters of Sloper Pond to raise money so children can attend summer camp at YMCA Camp Sloper, Camp Quinnipiac in Cheshire and Naciwonki Summer Adventures.

Last year, the event raised over $90,000. This year the participants and donors raised over $100,000, according to Mark Pooler, chief executive officer of the Southington-Cheshire YMCA .

Team Brian was the first to go into the pond. The team was created in honor of Brian Goralski, former Southington Board of Education chairman, who died in September 2021 after a battle with cancer.

Family hits the big time with movie scene remakes

Small faith community promotes kindness in month-long endeavor

SOUTHINGTON — What began as a fun way to pass the time during the COVID-19 lockdown turned into something far greater for one local family.

PLAINVILLE – The Christian season of Lent began this week, with Ash Wednesday. For adherents, this marks a time of self-reflection, repentance and charitable giving. For Plainville’s Bahá’ís faith community, its season of giving came about late late year. On Nov. 27, 2021 Bahá’ís around the world marked the 100th anniversary of the passing of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá, the eldest son of Bahá’u’lláh, the religion's founder.

family used the notoriety to shine a light on food insecurity in America, big names like Will Smith and Tony Robbins amplified their cause. “We were just trying to keep our kids Maddie and Barton busy since there was no school,” said Presser, a producer at ESPN.

Plus, my wife loves making costumes," Dan Presser said. “A Feeding America fundraiser was added to it because we always saw cars lined up on the news at food banks. Our daughter was asking questions.” The local family – which added a new member, Jordan, in 2021 – has recreated Maddie Presser and co-star Will Smith in scenes from The Lion King, Quarantine 2020 Productions’ Independence Pretty Woman, Field of Day re-creation. As the Presser's videos gained popularity, some big names joined their casts. “Jimmy Kimmel was in our Good Will Hunting, to stick it to his fake rival Matt Damon,” Presser said. And for a White Men Can't Jump video, Presser reached out to some ESPN contacts and was able to get Julius "Dr. J" Erving, Oscar Robertson, Bob Costas and JJ Reddick to serve as fans in the scene. Non-celebrities have joined in the fun too. “We would text our friends with kids and have them do a line, so we could all stay in touch during the lockdown,” Presser said. Will Smith appeared in a Presser production as well – Independence Day. The Hollywood legend also surprised the family with an allexpense paid trip to Jamaica.

Also, a holiday party was pulled together for members of PARC, a service for individuals with developmental disabilities.

Before Bahá’u’lláh died in 1892, he designated ‘Abdu’lBahá to become the interpreter of his teachings and leader of the faith, which centers on the oneness of humanity.

“Our facility was set up beautifully, and our members enjoyed a traditional holiday feast ... in addition to festive cupcakes,” said Erica Donovan, executive director of PARC.

‘Abdu’l-Bahá "is considered an example of how we should be in the world; showing kindness and using our lives to be of service to others,” said Allissa Robinson, secretary of the spiritual assembly of the Bahá’ís of Plainville.

The Bahá’ís encouraged all Plainville residents to join in the effort, resulting in many good deeds being done locally.

“Our visitors with development disabilities were so grateful to be able to celebrate together,” said Donovan.

Hand-made clocks by former Plainville resident Charles Kraut were donated to PARC, and painted by members. When Kraut died in December, PARC made sure his family and friends were able to see the man’s handiwork. Photo courtesy of Allissa Robinson The PARC spread joy to oth-

Charles Kraut, a former Plainville resident, was a clock-maker, and many of his creations were donated to PARC, where they were colorfully painted. When Kraut died in December, PARC saw to it that the timepieces would be displayed at his funeral, allowing his loved ones to enjoy his work.

Bahá’ís have been active in Plainville since 1979. The small faith community – which numbers about 10 – honored ‘Abdu’l-Bahá's legacy by performing acts of service and kindness throughout the month of December.

And thanks to a donation from the Plainville Knights of Columbus, PARC members received small gifts at the gathering.

“We did it somewhat spontaneously this year,” Allissa Robinson said. “We hope to do a bit more next time that we do this.”

Catalytic converter thefts on the rise

Understanding common tests for your heart

By Nicole Zappone The Citizen

PLAINVILLE — According to Plainville Police Department Lieutenant Nicholas Mullins, since the start of the new year, there have been 16 catalytic converter thefts in town. “We have had a lot and it’s primarily happening in the overnight hours under the cover of darkness,” said Mullins, pointing out that thieves can get what they came for and be gone within seconds. Because of this, these criminals can be difficult to catch. Catalytic converters, an exhaust emission control device, contain precious metals, such as platinum and rhodium, and can be sold for $50 to $1,500.

Your posture refers to how you position your body when standing, sitting, or lying down. Good posture is essential for your body’s well-being. Poor posture can place stress on tendons, muscles, and ligaments, leading to neck and back pain. The way you carry your body plays a significant role in how much stress you place on your joints. Slouching puts the body in an unnatural position that can also affect the abdominal organs and interfere with proper digestion. Maintaining a good posture is one of the simplest and easiest ways to keep your spine healthy. After a thorough examination and testing, a chiropractor can help you correct poor posture and realign your spine to ensure optimal body functioning.

Southington council approves East Street land buy By Jesse Buchanan Record-Journal staff

council member. The council met Monday and unanimously approved the purchase.

SOUTHINGTON — Town leaders Monday approved the purchase of more than 11 acres on East Street for open space. The property at 800 East St. is adjacent to town-owned undeveloped land as well as the YMCA’s Camp Sloper. Town officials were glad that the Korin family which owns the property were willing to sell the land to the town for $180,000. “I think it’s wonderful that the family gave us the first right of refusal at a very fair price,” said Jim Morelli, a

Paul Chaplinsky, a councilor and chairman of the open space acquisition subcommittee, said the parcel would be a “beautiful addition” to the town’s open space inventory. Chris Palmieri, a council member, called it a “home run” and said the purchase would also help the YMCA camp. “It’s an added benefit just to be able to complement the Y property,” he said.

The town and the camp have agreements regarding parking and other land use issues.
