There’s a Witch’s Dungeon closer than you think

PLAINVILLE — As a child, Cordlant Hull had a rare blood condition that made it difficult for him to do what other kids did. He was basically home-bound. So while his peers played outside, Hull focused on making small models of movie monsters. Decades later, Hull still surrounds himself with creepy creations, as the owner of “The Witch’s Dungeon Classic Movie Museum” in Plainville. See Dungeon, A4

Verderame 28 units and end the lawsuit. Southington’s inclusion on the list frustrates Hammersley since he said there are affordable options for local residents that aren’t counted by state officials. In a recent study on affordable housing, consultant Glenn Chalder of Planimetric found more than 8,000 housing units in town that met the cost requirements to be considered affordable. With no deed restriction capping the price, those properties aren’t counted by the state. “Southington does have a diversity of housing options out there,” Hammersley said. “It begs for a conversation twenty on the state level of what and how we define affordable housing. I’m not sure what the real desire is, if we have affordable housing like that, what are we looking to get?”

planners rather than pushed through under the threat of a lawsuit. Hammersley and other planners weren’t optimistic that deed-restricted housing development would be enough to meet the 10 percent goal. While some recent developments have included some affordable houses or apartments, they’ve also increased the overall housing in town. The town would have to require more than 10 percent of units in these developments remain affordable to gain any ground. “Your chasing your tail. You almost can never get there,” Hammersley said.
Housing authority, subsidized apartments The town has 54 deed-restricted affordable units according to Chalder’s study. More are planned and proposed. Assisted housing, such as the Summer Brook apartments on Darling Street, total 319 units. Houses bought with CHFA and USDA mortgages are an additional 317 affordable homes. Southington has the most control over the 180 units in its Housing Authority that are open to low-income elderly and disabled residents.

One could say movie monsters are in his blood. Hull’s great uncle, Henry Hull, starred in the film, “Werewolf of London,” and knew many big names in the business, including Vincent Price and Oscar-winning make-up artists John Chambers (“Planet of the Apes”) and Dick Smith (“The Exorcist”).

spooky figures out of wax, fine wire mesh, papiermache and polymers. And not long after, he had enough ghouls – six – to open his own museum, in Bristol. The year was 1966. “At that time, Halloween was merely a one-night holiday; there were no ‘Halloween attractions,’” Hull said. “But what I planned was much different – a museum tribute to the actors and makeup artists that created these classic films.” “The Witch’s Dungeon Classic Movie Museum” moved to 103 East Main St. in Plainville in 2020. “We have attracted people from 27 different countries and over 40 different states,” said Hull. “Oddly, more people out-of-state know of the museum than nearby.” Museum tours are led by costumed hosts and take about 20 minutes.
“Over the years, my profession as an artist helped me raise funds to expand the museum,” Hull said, pointing out that he has had a lot of help along the way, including from his mother, Dorothea Hull, a former Broadway costume designer; and from and his handy uncle, Louis Gagnon. Emmy winner Bill Diamond and musician and artist Steve Matthews are other important members of the museum family. “The Witch’s Dungeon is unique,” Matthews said. “It’s a symbol of endurance and dedication. Not just to the films, but to the vision that brought it to life 56 years ago.” “The Witch’s Dungeon Classic Movie Museum” is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 7 to 10 p.m., and by appointment. The R-J Invitational rounds back into form By Sean Krofssik Record-Journal staff
MERIDEN — Friday was a celebration of area track and field. Seven squads took part in the annual Record-Journal Invitational on a sunfilled breezy day at Platt High School. All of the coaches worked together to officiate and score the event, which featured hundreds of local athletes from Southington, Cheshire, Sheehan, Lyman Hall, Coginchaug, Maloney and host Platt. The day featured varsity, JV and co-ed relays and was highlighted by some great individual performances. Athletes were allowed a maximum of two events apiece and several came away as double-winners. Among them were Sheehan
seniors Amanda Castaldi and Avery Winters, Sheehan sophomore Kathryn Lombino and Maloney sophomore Bria Benigni. “I just gave it all I could give,” said Castaldi, who won 100 meter dash in 15.8 seconds and the the 100 hurdles in 17.46. “My start was really bad on the first hurdle, but I focused on the next nine hurdles. In the 100, me and my teammate Patrice Mansfield were helping each other out.” Winters was best in the 200 in 25.80 seconds and in the 400 in 1:00.10. The time in the 200 lowered her own school record. Benigni captured the 800 (2:22.9) and the 1,600 (5:16.20). Both times are her personal bests for the outdoor season.

“There was some really good competition today,” Benigni said. “In the mile, I just wanted to hit some splits, and the 800 had a lot of competition and that fueled me to do really well.” Lombino, the Sheehan sophomore, had the breakout meet at the R-J. She won the long jump at 16 feet, 5 inches and the triple jump at 33-05. “I was surprised,” Lombino said. “I wasn’t expected to win two events. But I’m happily surprised. I never expect myself to get this far. I wasn’t doing this well my freshman year, so this was quite the jump. I PR’d on both events. I was motivated, and once I started doing well, I kept go- Southington’s John Regalbuti clears the last obstacle in the ing.” 110-meter hurdles. Aaron Flaum, Record-Journal For the boys, Platt freshman Sheliq Setzer nabbed two golds. He tied Lyman Hall’s Yahya Kardad in the 400 at 53 seconds flat and then won the 200 outright in 24.90. “I don’t really like doing the 400, but I liked it today,” Setzer said. “I was in third place at the beginning and then I caught up.” Cheshire junior Colin Brown and Cheshire sophomore Tyler Caron won both times they took the track. Brown captured the 100 in 10.9 and
Caron won the 1,600 in 4:42.70. The duo then teamed with Mia Vientos and Ashlyn Diglio to win the 4x400 co-ed relay in 2:56. “With those four working together so well, it was a nice finish to the meet,” Cheshire girls track coach Barbara Hedden said. “Everyone did a tremendous job today.” Coginchaug’s Gage Rovelli tied teammate Dylan Quincy to win the long jump (19-¼). Rovelli also took first in the javelin (146-09).

Another big highlight on the girls side was Maloney high jumper Shaelyn Murphy. She not only set a new Maloney girls outdoor record, she competed against the boys and was the top overall performer in the event. Murphy’s jump of 5-6 matched the school record she set during the indoor season. On Friday, 5-6 bested Platt’s Kymani Johnson and Sheehan’s Jelan Kollie by two inches. See Track, A11

EGG-CELLENT IDEA
Teacher, finance official in 81st By Jesse Buchanan Record-Journal staff
SOUTHINGTON — A finance board Republican and a former Democratic town councilor are running for the 81st House district. The incumbent, Republican state Rep. John Fusco, isn’t seeking re-election in November.
The Middle School of Plainville Art Club created a fun spring surprise for the Pre-K students at Plainville’s Louis Toffolon Elementary school. Members of the art club hand painted beach rocks to look like spring chicks hatching. Art teachers Laura Meehan and Lori Vigue accompanied the MSP crew to Toffolon, where they hid the chicks outside for the Pre-K students to find.

Murphy has already qualified for Nationals after making it in the indoor season. Other individual winners for the girls on Friday were Coginchaug’s Allison Vigue in the pole vault (14-9), Maloney’s Savannah Vasquez in the 3,200 (12:55.40) and Southington’s Hailey Zembrzuski in the javelin (11000). “I just came out for the team and everyone was cheering me on and I just did what I could do.” Zembrzuski said. “This is only my second meet ever. I just started. I knew I could come in and throw, but I impressed myself on that throw today.”
The day started with a win by Platt in the 4x100 co-ed relay. Estella Delacruz, Dayanara Gonzalez, Brandon Carrion and Zyair Coleman crossed in 47.80. Platt’s Vittorio Church won the triple jump in 37-1½ inches and fellow Panther Reggie Darkah won shot put with a toss of 49-9½. Cheshire’s Robert DiNatale won the 3,200 easily with a time of 10:31.70. Cheshire coach Allen Dvarskas said the meet was well run and well organized. “This was a nice opportunity to show themselves today and we are looking forward to where they go from here,” Dvarskas said. “It was a good day.”
Lyman Hall had a pair of winners on the boys side. Mason Williams threw a career-best 132-8 to take discus and Chance DeCrescenzo was tops in pole vault (12-6).
DeCrescenzo, who came in as the favorite, was the only competitor in the event to still be standing after 11 feet. Williams said one of his main goals was to get 130 feet this year and he did that on Friday. The throw came on his second attempt of the day. Southington senior John Regalbuti won the 110 hurdles in 16.3 to highlight the day for the Blue Knight boys. Coginchaug took first, second and third in the 800. Will Dalles won it in 2:03.40. Sheehan track coach Charles Farley said the meet was a success.
“A lot of people stepped up to make this come off the way we hoped to,” Farley said. “Once we got it going, we did well. Everybody contributed and we got everything done the way we wanted to.”

MERIDEN — Standing behind a podium in the state crime lab’s K9 training facility on Colony Street on April 14, law enforcement officials, joined by Gov. Ned Lamont, described an ongoing effort to reduce the numbers of so-called “ghost guns” on the street.
James Rovella, commissioner of the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection, described the weapons’ seizure as a collaborative effort that involved multiple agencies.
Spread on tables surrounding the podium were dozens of such firearms — handguns, long guns and a machine gun — along with numerous rounds of ammuni-

at the state level,” Poulos said.
“It’s far more, ‘Trust the people, trust the individuals, trust the parents’, as opposed to, ‘Inflict a top-down government on pretty much every social thing that’s part of our lives,’” he said.
Poulos, a lifelong town resident, said he understands Southington’s culture.
Morrison said Democrats in Hartford haven’t implemented good financial policies. “There’s a better way to run the state economically,” he said.
“We are extremely excited about his candidacy and are confident that he will be an effective advocate for Southington as a state legislator,” she said.
Poulos said he made tough decisions while on the Town Council and never compromised his values. He’s concerned about political divisions and wants to break down barriers to lawmakers making the right decisions.
While the 81st district changed a bit during the latest state redistricting, it’s still entirely within Southington and includes the center and southern parts of town. Both Poulos and Morrison said they have always lived in the 81st district.
“Many residents, business owners, neighbors and folks I’ve met around town — Democrats, Republicans and unaffiliated voters alike — have called upon me to further leverage my skill set
Erin Cowles, Southington Democratic Town Committee chairwoman, said Poulos has the party’s backing.

ghost guns seized by law enforcement agencies has increased annually from 2020 to the first quarter of 2022. VISIT MYRECORDJOURNAL.COM/ATHLETES TO VOTE FOR YOUR FAVORITE NOMINEES!
BRANDON ALVARADO
AVA HARRIS
That photo of Brandon Alvarardo was taken during football, when the Wilcox junior was a two-way standout at safety and slot receiver. Turns out Alvarado is a fair hand at baseball, too. Last Thursday, Alvarado fired a 7-0 no-hitter at Whitney Tech. Alvarado struck out 15 and walked 3. He also went 2-for-4 at the plate with two doubles. That put him at .500 against CTC pitching entering the week.
Cheshire girls lacrosse steamed into the week at 5-1 with an offense that seems to punch harder each time out. Junior Ava Harris leads the way. With a pair of back-to-back 7-point games against Glastonbury and Newtown, Harris has 25 goals and 11 assists heading into showdowns with SCC rivals Guilford and Hand. She had a season-best (so far) 5 goals vs. East Lyme and Hall.
CHRIS BARKASY
EMILY HART
Sheehan shortstop Chris Barkasy can produce the routine plays and hits and, man, can he produce the dramatic ones, too. In Monday’s 8-7 rivalry win over Lyman Hall, the Titans rallied from 7-1 down with seven runs in the bottom of the 7th inning, highlighted by Barkasy’s bases-clearing triple to tie the game. Barkasy also tripled to fuel Sheehan’s 7th-inning comeback on April 7 at Cromwell.
With Emily Hart in the circle and at the plate, the Platt softball Panthers are clearly a force to be reckoned with. The junior right-hander returned to the lineup last week and Platt has gone 3-2 since, capped by Hart’s 3-hit shutout of Conard on Monday. Hart struck out 14 that day. She also fanned 14 in a 1-hitter vs. New Britain and 15 in a 3-hitter vs. Middletown. At the plate, Hart is 8-for-18.
JUSTIN HACKETT
JAYNA MACKENZIE
Prior to Sheehan’s stunning rally Monday, Lyman Hall’s Justin Hackett was cued up for AOTW. Even with the loss, Hackett had to remain. The senior hit a towering 2-run HR and stole five bases, including one of home. Last Wednesday, Hackett pitched a complete game and delivered a 2-run double in the bottom of the 7th to beat Notre Dame 6-5. You see why he’s going on to play at Bryant University.
The Lady Titans haven’t lost a step from last year’s envelope-pushing run to the Class S state semifinals. If anything, given the scoring of Jayna MacKenzie, they’re poised to push that envelope further in 2022. The senior captain scored six goals in each of Sheehan’s first four games, including on Thursday against Hamden, when she hit the 100-goal milestone for her career.
