Safety concerns prompt town to add stop signs to trail crossing

SOUTHINGTON — Stop signs were added to a busy intersection of the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail last week as town officials look to increase pedestrian and motorist safety along the popular recreational corridor. Police Traffic Officer David Schneider and Highway Department Laborer Dylan Danko installed the signs at the linear trail intersection with Mill Street Friday morning, April 22 directly across from the parking lot for the dog park. Town officials discussed trail safety this past fall after a pedestrian was struck crossing West Main Street while in a trail crosswalk.

Joshua Henriquez, 21, of Seymour, was injured in the incident, police said. Town Councilor Tom Lombardi said at the time that the council would be addressing pedestrian safety during upcoming meetings. "I felt that was a terrible accident," Lombardi said.

The almost month-long celebration will kick off on May 5 with a Transgender 101 discussion at the Southington Library at 6:30 p.m. The celebration will include a total of 19 events, including a Pride Drag Extravaganza at the New England Carousel Museum, a Pride flag raising day, teen and family events at YMCA Camp Sloper, a Pride Sunday Service at First Congregational Church and a Pup Strut event.
