SOUTHINGTON — Stop signs were added to a busy intersection of the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail last week as town officials look to increase pedestrian and motorist safety along the popular recreational corridor. Police Traffic Officer David Schneider and Highway Department Laborer Dylan Danko installed the signs at the linear trail intersection with Mill Street Friday morning, April 22 directly across from the parking lot for the dog park. Town officials discussed trail safety this past fall after a pedestrian was struck crossing West Main Street while in a trail crosswalk.

Joshua Henriquez, 21, of Seymour, was injured in the incident, police said. Town Councilor Tom Lombardi said at the time that the council would be addressing pedestrian safety during upcoming meetings. "I felt that was a terrible accident," Lombardi said.

The almost month-long celebration will kick off on May 5 with a Transgender 101 discussion at the Southington Library at 6:30 p.m. The celebration will include a total of 19 events, including a Pride Drag Extravaganza at the New England Carousel Museum, a Pride flag raising day, teen and family events at YMCA Camp Sloper, a Pride Sunday Service at First Congregational Church and a Pup Strut event. said in 2019. "To witness a young man like Michael embrace these veterans, their families and the obstacles they face, and set out to help them, is an inspiration to me and all of us at the Travis Mills Foundation." Ahern's goal is to raise $500,000 for the cause before attending college. The young man's vision started in 2017, at a Fourth of July parade in Belgrade, Maine. There, he and his family noticed a wounded soldier across the street. Ahern and his sister Kara felt compelled to thank the veteran, who was from the Travis Mills Foundation retreat, which was under development near the Ahern's Mount twenty Vernon, Maine summer home.

Mitchell Oliva, chairman of the Southington Pride Board of Directors, said he is excited to be back this year. “It’s twice the size thanks not only to our community sponsors but also the response from last year” Oliva said. “… It really is a community celebration.”

Petry added: “You don’t have to wear a uniform to believe in the values that we associate with the Medal of Honor – courage, sacrifice, integrity, commitment, patriotism, and citizenship.”

Oliva said in addition to the planned events there will be a restaurant program called “#PridePass” where, similar to the state wine trail, participants can

go to local restaurants for specials that are being offered in connection with the event. Participants then get a stamp in a booklet and those that complete the booklet and submit it are entered to win a $250 Visa gift card. The program will run from May 5 to June 30. Planning for this year’s event evolved as well, with six subcommittees forming to handle various aspects of the events. The subcommittees included faith/spirituality, disability, education, public outreach and social media. Valerie DePaolo, town councilor and

a member of the Pride board of directors, said after last year’s event they had volunteers and local businesses reaching out to them to be a part of this years celebration. “It really brings the community together,” DePaolo said. “It’s about positive things, love and acceptance and letting people be who they are.” Oliva said they look forward to “making Southington a better and more inclusive place.” lsellew@record-journal.com 203-317-2225 Twitter: @LaurenSellewRJ

Letters to the Editor Speaking up Editor : Every Southington resident has the right to speak at Town Council meetings. So it was disappointing on 3/28 to hear Councilman Dziedzic say that a speaker from the previous meeting (3/14) should not have spoken publicly.

Perhaps Mr. Dziedzic was uncomfortable with the topic, but the speaker had been respectful. He raised concerns that involved the council, never specifying councilors by name, and he cited regulations he believed may have been violated. He identified himself as a member of the Fire Commission. Councilman Dziedzic ac-

knowledged everyone's right to speak, but then made clear his preference for these concerns to be submitted in writing instead of publicly. He went on to raise the speaker's political affiliation as a motivation for bringing this concern. I found it distasteful, but more importantly, I hope no members of our Town Council find gov-

Local religious store moves to online only By Jesse Buchanan Record-Journal staff

SOUTHINGTON — A local religious supply store has moved to online sales but will keep a presence at its West Street location for pickup. Owners of Patrick Baker & Sons, started in the 1950s, said strictly online sales gives the store a greater reach and is in response to changing demographics. The store at 1650 West St. was owned by founders Pat and Patricia Baker. They’ve died and the store is now run by family members. In January, the owners decided to sell the building but lease the basement from the new owner for their warehouse operation. They no longer have a showroom.

Threlkeld is married to Mary Baker, the company’s president. Her sister Maureen Kelly is the company vice president.

The store sells Roman Catholic religious supplies such as banners, altar cloths, clerical garb, Bibles, rosaries and First Communion gifts. For the store’s wholesale business, owners started churchgoods.com. “The retail and wholesale For retail customers, they showroom was close to 8,000 have churchgoodsgifts.com. square feet,” said David A decline in church attenThrelkeld, the store’s chief dance led to a drop in local operating officer. “With the walk-in sales, Threlkeld advent of the slowdown of the churches and changes in said. Our library is raising money to host a community mural as part of Wallingford’s 350th anniversary. The mural will be a collaborative project celebrating the people who live in our town. Local artist Rashmi Talpade painted a giant tree in the library and will help residents create decorative “leaves” with images of themselves and their families. Most images will be photographs, but self-portraits in other mediums will also be welcome. As the leaf-shaped images are created, community participants will see them affixed to the tree and watch the development of the mural, akin to a tree sprouting leaves. We are seeking $5,000 to cover the costs. The Wallingford Public Library is excited to showcase this beautiful, visual reflection of the people who make up our community.

Southington passes flag restrictions in party line vote By Jesse Buchanan Record-Journal staff

SOUTHINGTON — After a lengthy public hearing and debate Monday, town leaders passed an ordinance restricting flags on municipal grounds in a party-line vote. While the law will restrict the flying of all but government, military and school flags from town buildings, much of the debate centered on the rainbow flag that was flown by Southington Pride last year. The group wanted to fly its flag again this year at the John Weichsel Municipal Center. Republicans, who proposed the ordinance, said it was needed to avoid lengthy and distracting debates over the suitability of flags. It passed with six Republican votes in favor and three Democratic votes in opposition. “This is not about one group. This is not about one

organization, this is not about one country. But rather the way to put forward sound policy that keeps government focused and not infringe on people’s lives,” said Tom Lombardi, a Town Council Republican. Jack Perry, a Democratic councilor, said town officials or the council could decide on the suitability of flag requests. “We’re not listening,” he said of councilors to those who’d spoken passionately in favor of flying the rainbow flag later this year. Perry proposed adding the pride flag to the ordinance and making it a flag that could be flown from town buildings. That suggestion failed in a party-line vote. Democrats also tried to table a vote on the flag ordinance, another motion that failed when Republicans outvoted Democrats.

Debate over the council’s role Val DePaolo, a Democratic Town Council member, said she didn’t see a problem with the council deciding on which flags to allow and didn’t expect the town to be deluged by applications. “We’re not going to get 50 applications,” DePaolo said. “Common sense is going to prevail.” “I see raising flags as another way of fostering inclusion and diversity and bring civic engagement,” she said. “It’s just a symbol but it says a lot.” In the past decades, the town has flown the Greek flag, flags for nurses and organ donors as well as the pride flag last year. Paul Chaplinsky, council vice chairman and a Republican, said the ordinance question for him was about the role of government. Deciding on flags would likely produce divisions in town. “As someone who’s looking at what the role of government is, whether government should be deciding on

Prompted by the pride flag? Several speakers during Monday’s public hearing on the flag ordinance suggested that Republican’s motivation was to prevent the pride flag this summer. Following last summer’s pride events and flag raising, the council had letters and speakers opposed to the town’s support for the organization and events. Walter Grover spoke highly of the council Republicans, some of whom he’s known personally and worked on their campaigns. He said they’re on “the wrong side of history” on this issue, however, and described the proposal as the “anti-pride flag ordinance.” “That’s what it really is about,” Grover said. Republicans were trying to appease “a very small minority of really right wing religious folks who have different opinions.” Victoria Triano, council chairwoman, a Republican

and a pastor, said the council last year passed a bipartisan resolution in support of non-heterosexual residents and their contribution to Southington. The council also supported the pride flag raising last summer, she said. “One of the things we found after that, even though we talked about it in January and early February, there was a lot of discussion. Some people were asking, ‘What can we fly? What else can we fly?’” Triano said. The ordinance would help treat residents “equally and fairly.” “I knew we had to act because you cannot govern on emotion or whim,” Triano said. ‘I have nothing against the gay flag. This was never initiated against the gay community.” The American flag, Triano said, was the right symbol for a united community. “That flag is inclusive. That flag represents diversity,” she said. “The message of our flag is, ‘You’re home.’ We don’t need anything else, we have the American flag.”

MUSCLE TENSION

JIMMY MAZZ

There is often a lot of pain associated with tense, knotted muscles. However, relief is in sight for those suffering from muscle tension in the form of chiropractic treatment. Chiropractic care is a unique approach to healing. Chiropractors look at how the entire body functions instead of just its isolated parts. Muscle tension is usually tied to a misaligned spine and poor posture. Long- term muscle tension can result from several causes, such as repetitive activities including desk work, sports, lack of sleep, emotional stress, or inadequate healing of a past injury. A skilled chiropractor will search for the underlying causes of muscle tension and not simply treat the symptoms. Treatment can include manual therapies and adjustments and deep tissue massage.

Emotions on display at Gold Star monument dedication By Nicole Zappone The Citizen

BERLIN — Area residents, government officials, and Gold Star families gathered at Veterans Memorial Park Saturday for the dedication of the Connecticut Gold Star Families Memorial Monument. The monument, which broke ground on May 22, 2021, honors military families and the legacy of their loved ones who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the armed forces. One side of the black granite monument bears the words, “Gold Star Families Memorial Monument, a tribute to Gold Star Families and Relatives who sacrificed Loved Ones for our Freedom.” The other features four panels: Homeland, Family, Patriot, and Sacrifice. At the center of this tribute is a cut out, which represents lost loved ones. Leslie Manselle, a Gold Star sister, sang the national anthem Saturday. Several speakers then addressed the crowd. Delivering remarks was Berlin Mayor Mark Kaczynski, Gold Star mother Helen Keiser-Pedersen, Connecticut Veterans Commission member Thomas Saadi, and Medal of Honor recipient Paul “Buddy” Bucha.

the great honor of meeting Helen Keiser-Pedersen a few years back, and it was lifechanging. To hear her and Bob’s story about losing their son, was heart-wrenching, yet inspiring, as they are beautiful people.”

With the Gold Star monument, Berlin becomes part of a nationwide project led by Hershel “Woody” Williams, the last surviving Marine from World War II to wear the Medal of Honor.

VISIT MYRECORDJOURNAL.COM/ATHLETES TO VOTE FOR YOUR FAVORITE NOMINEES!

BRANDON CAHILL

SHAELYN MURPHY

Heading into the year, coach Bryan McCarty and the Panthers knew they had a top of the rotation pitcher in senior right-hander Brandon Cahill, who was coming off an All-Conference junior campaign. Cahill has not disappointed in ’22. Last Wednesday, he went the distance in a 4-1 win over Farmington, allowing five hits, no earned runs and striking out 12. He beat Bristol Eastern on Monday to improve to 5-0.

We had fun with Maloney high jumper Shaelyn Murphy in our Athlete of the Week video. Given the way she jumps, we don’t put any height beyond her reach. At the moment, her school records stand at 5 feet, 6 inches, both indoor and out. Coming off a Nike Nationals indoor season, Murphy in unbeaten in the spring, including at the R-J Invitational (against the boys!) and at Saturday’s Patriot Games in Coventry.

MATTHEW MORGAN

ALLIE OTTOCHIAN

Fast closing in on win No. 300 in program history, the Southington volleyball Blue Knights stand 7-2 on the season fueled by a balanced attack led by Matthew Morgan. One of three senior captains and a returning All-Conference player, Morgan is a threat in all phases of the game. Friday’s 3-1 victory over Conard provided fresh proof. Morgan chalked up 16 kills with just three errors, 10 digs and five aces.

Sheehan lax is blessed with not just one, but two 100-goal scorers. One week after Jayna MacKenzie reached the career milestone, Allie Ottochian did the same Friday night in Branford. She hit 100 with eight goals in a 1411 victory over the Hornets. Adding an assist, Ottochian notched a nine-point performance for a second straight game. Heading into this week, Ottochian had 24 goals and 17 assists on the season.

RAFAEL RODRIGUEZ

KARISSA SPRING

Let’s set the stage for Friday’s Platt-Maloney baseball battleat Ceppa Field. While Platt Athlete of the Week nominee Brandon Cahill leads the Panthers, the Spartans have been backboned by their candidate, Rafael Rodriguez. The sophomore catcher, who cut his varsity teeth last year as a freshman, was the catalyst in Friday’s 5-3 win over Conard, tagging a two-run double in the first and finishing the day 2-for-3.

Cheshire softball has a spring in its step because it has a Spring in its lineup. Junior pitcher Karissa Spring has played a big role in a six-game winning streak that has Cheshire at 8-2. The Rams won three road games last week. Spring 3-hit Lyman Hall, 1-hit Sheehan, then struck out 12 against Amity. At the plate, Spring went 3-for-4 at Sheehan and 5-for-5 at Amity with six runs scored in the two games combined.

Scouting history made at crossover ceremony In 2016, Plainville was one of the Connecticut towns selected by the Boy Scouts to beta test the Lions rank; a program for kindergartners that comes before Cub Scouts. Just recently, four local youngsters who started out as Lions some six years ago graduated – or “crossed over” – to Plainville Troop 76. Zachary Krpata, Landon Pierce, Benjamin Livingston and Jacob Burns participated in their crossover ceremony on March 26 at

Camp Mattatuck Leever Lodge in Plymouth. The boys were joined by fellow members of Plainville Cub Scout Pack 49, Aleena Krpata and Haylee Foley, who crossed over to Bristol-based Troop 1425. Boy Scouts of America began accepting girls into its flagship program in 2019. Since then, more than 140,000 girls have joined BSA . — Nicole Zappone

Serving was the main difference in the opening set, as Southington piled up seven aces. Maloney had none. The second game was more of the same. Aces were plentiful for the Blue Knights, with multiple from Morgan and Sean Roper. Senior Cameron Stanton (6 kills) had three straight kills midway through the game.

Gianacopolos said the main reason for Southington’s success so far is the competition in practice.

Morgan, Stanton and Daniel Semmel are the Southington captains. As a program, Southington is closing in on a milestone: 300 wins. The Blue Knights, established by Gianacopolos in 2003, are six wins away.

Colby Nitz added four aces for Southington.

“No one is comfortable in their position,” Gianacopolos said. “They know that Coach Lou is going to put the best team forward and we saw that today. No matter the score, you put their best team out there. Our strong point is that we’ve shown progress every day. They are eager to learn.”
