The deputy chief role is focused on training firefighters. Fire Chief James Paul said Lee has excelled in that work.
Lee has been with the department for about two decades. He was promoted to captain in 2017 and to battalion chief last year.
“We are unfortunately going to lose a lot of people with a lot of history, a lot of talent, a lot of experience,” Paul said. “I appreciate all of their dedication, all of their commitment to the department and the community.” He was optimistic about the promotions and hires that would fill those positions. “Change isn’t bad, it’s something to look forward to,”

Paul said. “So many people in their different roles will bring so much more to the department.” Mark Lajoie, Board of Fire Commissioners chairman, was pleased at how well retiring fire department members had prepared those who’ll replace them. “The people we interviewed and stepped up are highly motivated, well trained” he said. “We’re not going to skip a beat.” “(Senior leadership) have been very instrumental in training the guys behind them and passing on the experience which is just tremendous,” Lajoie said. “Volunteer and career, they’re all trained well. People on sidelines ready to step in.”

Lembo From A1
To refer to Lembo as simply the Southington baseball coach would be a disservice to a man who dedicated his life to young men and a community that is mourning his loss. Lembo coached the Blue Knights for 10 seasons, but he was so much more than a successful coach to those who knew him on and off the field. “He was one of a kind,” SHS assistant baseball coach Brian Crowley said. “Once he came to the community, he entrenched himself in it.” Lembo’s decade of success at SHS started with a trip to the 2011 Class LL title game. He would guide the Blue Knights to three more state twenty finals, losing as recently as 2019 to Staples in the LL championship game.

ball coach. Qualified to be Southington High’s next head coach, Crowley did not apply for the position. Instead, he agreed to be Lembo’s assistant after a two-hour discussion about life and baseball with the man hired to be head coach. That conversation took place in Crowley’s living room — the same living room Lembo once called his own. Yes, Crowley was living in the same Southington house Lembo had sold years prior to the two men’s meeting. “Charlie told me, ‘I’m sitting in the living room where I used to live,’” Crowley said.
“How funny is that? A lifelong bond was formed.” Destiny brought the two men together, and with Crowley at his side Lembo led the Blue Knights to the state tournament for 10 straight years. Lembo’s Blue Knights never won it all, but they won plenty of games with Lembo in charge. His final career record at Southington: 178-57. “He knew the ins and outs of baseball,” said Crowley. “I’d always asked him questions. He knew everything. He knew a lot about a lot. “He helped with hitters; he knew a lot about pitching,

catching, infield, outfield. He was just a multi-tool coach,” Crowley continued. “He could have coached alone. He just knew a lot.”
Southington never officially replaced Lembo this season. Instead, the school brought in Stan Switala as the team’s interim head coach.
Lembo’s last appearance at Fontana Field was last year on Senior Night.
Crowley and Joel Stamilio, who coached with Lembo for 10 years during the summer in clinics and on travel teams, helped Switala coach the 2022 Blue Knights to a 17-3 regular season.
Crowley recalls a few of his last hours with Lembo in the SHS dugout on May 10, 2021 when Southington hosted East Catholic and ace pitcher Frank Mozzicato. “He was ill, he wasn’t feeling well, he didn’t have any energy,” said Crowley. “But he was a freaking trooper. He was screaming as loud as he could at that point.”
Several current Blue Knights played for Lembo two summers ago on the Hamdenbased Connecticut Bombers. One of those players is senior pitcher Vincent Borghese, who has known Lembo since his days attending See Lembo, A4

Southington’s other two state title game appearances under Lembo came during back-to-back 20-4 seasons in 2013 and 2014. Lembo never had a losing season at SHS and owns a career .758 winning percentage with four 20-win seasons. As a player, Lembo earned a spot in the East Haven High School Hall of Fame. After high school, he pitched and played shortstop at Providence College.

Lembo’s summer baseball camps. “He was just such a nice person; he always looked out for you,” said Borghese. “He was just a good all-around guy. He was always so supportive.”
Eight years later, when Borghese showed up as a freshman and a prospective Blue Knight, Lembo remembered Borghese’s first name. It’s that kind of personal touch that made Lembo so loved by his players.

STEPS reminds grads to celebrate responsibly By Paul Bedard, Esq.
This time of year, we look forward to graduation parties and celebratory gatherings. However, we have a moral and legal duty to celebrate responsibly. Connecticut’s social host law, Public
Act 12-199, makes it illegal for people who own or control private property to allow anyone under age 21 to possess alcohol. In addition to making it illegal to allow underage drinking, the law creates a responsibility to make reasonable efforts to stop underage drinking should it be
discovered. A person convicted under Connecticut’s social host law may face one year in prison and up to a $2,000 fine. Despite our state’s tough laws, the statistics regarding underage drinking in Southington are sobering. A recent survey showed 17.6 per-
cent of Southington students in grades 7, 9 and 11 reported that they have obtained alcohol at a party with an adult present who was aware that underage drinking was happening. See STEPS, A13

Despite debate, council passes agreement for Plantsville lot By Jesse Buchanan Record-Journal staff
SOUTHINGTON — Town leaders approved an agreement with Plantsville property owners that will allow for a municipal parking lot near the Quinnipiac River. Town Council Republicans prevailed over Democrats to pass the agreement during last week’s meeting. A council member of each party, Republican Bill Dziedzic and Democrat Val DePaolo, recused themselves due to personal or family financial interests in the property.
In exchange for a portion of the property owners’ land, the town will build and maintain the municipal lot. The 39-lot parking area is slated for the rear of 26 W. Main St., 774 S. Main St. and 778 S. Main St., along the river.

Jack Perry, a Democratic councilor, said he and fellow Democrat Chris Palmieri tried unsuccessfully to table action on the agreement last week. Perry said he wanted more information on the cost of the project as well as the ongoing
maintenance costs that the town will incur. Under the terms of the $1 lease, the town will maintain the lot for 20 years at which time it’ll revert to the original owners. Reporter Jesse Buchanan can be reached at jbuchanan@ record-journal.com.

The more than three dozen funding applications that have been submitted to date include several requests from city departments for infrastructure repair and upgrades.
