Three centuries of history Founding family descendant to leave Upson homestead By Jesse Buchanan Record-Journal staff
SOUTHINGTON — A tenthgeneration Upson descendant, Elizabeth Upson Stanley will be the last of the founding family to live at its Marion Avenue homestead. Stanley, 84, is moving with Stanley her son to Florida later this month. It was a difficult decision, but necessary move, she said. She’s also encouraged that much of the family land is now protected open space. “It’s killing me to leave this place,” Stanley said. “It was just a matter of the right thing for me to do and the right time to do it.”

Plainville High School’s top students persevered By Nicole Zappone The Citizen
PLAINVILLE — Plainville High School valedictorian Daniel Sozanski is fascinated by numbers. Southington resident Carol Langley on the Appalachian Trail in Pennsylvania in 2009.
Senior hiker has no plans to slow down By Joy VanderLek Special to The Citizen
SOUTHINGTON — Each year, for a number of decades, Carol Langley has hiked portions of the Appalachian Trail. And this summer, as she closes in on a milestone birthday, Langley will be on the AT once again. “I turn 80 in December,” the longtime Southington resident pointed out. Langley credits her grandparents for her good genes and love of nature. She remembers going on all-day hikes with her grandfather, and recalls her grandmother working in the
family vegetable garden in Wolcott well into her 90s. “I am walking in their footsteps,” said Langley, who’s very first Appalachian Trail experience came way back in 1956. “I was in junior high school and I went with my Girl Scout leader and we went to Bear Mountain and we slept on tarps,” she said.
So, as a freshman, he started delving into the world of economics. “I knew I wanted to do something in business and math,” said Sozanski, who is headed to Princeton in the fall. “When I studied it (economics), it hit me, and I knew I wanted to do it.” The Class of 2022’s top student said he is looking forward to challenging himself in college. Thinking about potential careers, Sozanski said, “I’m open to exploring different jobs. Something with research and analysis, statistics, numbers.”
“I have been outdoors forever.” The intrepid senior has scads of photos from past hiking adventures,
Plainville High School valedictorian Daniel Sozanski and salutatorian Hailey Calder. Nicole Zappone, The Citizen
At PHS, Sozanski took 12 AP and Early College Experience classes. He also competed in cross country, swimming and track and See PHS, A2

PHS calculus teacher Tim Rankin taught both Calder and Sozanski, and is quite proud of them. “It’s been like a journey with them, and it’s been great,” Rankin said.
Sozanski plans to study economics in college.
Calder plans to study chemical engineering in college.

Farewell to PHS
For Hailey Calder, being named salutatorian of the Plainville High School Class of 2022 was bittersweet. While proud of the accomplishment, she wished her mother was around to celebrate with her. Sadly, the girl’s mom died in 2021.
Plainville High School celebrated the 157-member Class of 2022 Friday, June 10 at Tinty Stadium. Addressing the crowd gathered for commencement, Calder, the class salutatorian, told her classmates to be proud of themselves, just as she is proud of them.
However, Calder believes her mother’s strength lives on through her. At PHS, Calder was a member of the theater and choir programs, and played trombone in the band. She also competed in swimming and track and field. As busy as she was, Calder still managed to excel in the classroom. The UConnbound scholar was a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, Science National Honor Society and Math National Honor Society.
“I have never gotten a B in a class,” Calder pointed out. “I love math a lot, and calculus
“Think of every challenge you’ve overcome,” Calder said. “Every person who’s helped you along the way.” Among the people Calder thanked in her speech was her late mother. The salutatorian indicated that life is too short to not be your authentic self. “A lot of people spend their lives trying to live up to other people’s expectations of them,” said Calder. “They choose to do things they don’t want to do and live lives they aren’t satisfied with in order to meet someone else’s standards of successful living.”

In Sozanski’s remarks at graduation, the class valedictorian reflected on the seniors’ four years at PHS. “Freshman year was a year of firsts,” he said. “We were all young and new to PHS, ready for new experiences and memories. Together we had our first Friday night football game, our first homecoming, our first class comp, and more.” Sozanski then talked about challenges the Class of 2022 faced, namely, a global pandemic. “We overcame online learning. We overcame all the changes and restrictions in place during our junior year,” he said. “We overcame the physical and mental struggle of learning during a pandemic.” Sozanski wished his classmates well. “We are no longer the young and inexperienced freshmen we were when we first stepped into this school,” he said. “The lessons we’ve learned from all our mentors and peers will guide us for years to come as we take the next step in our journey.” nzappone@record-journal.com

Since then, the “Silver Queen” – as she is known by many on the Appalachian Trail – has logged countless miles on the AT, from the southern reaches and into Vermont and Maine and all portions in-between. Langley joined the Green Mountain Club in the early 80s and began to hike with a core group on a regular basis. She also is happy to set off on her own, and has done so extensively. She’s not afraid.
Aside from being an avid hiker, Langley, a greatgrandmother, is active in her local land trust.

Langley’s schedule generally takes her on the Appalachian Trail for day-hikes, often On one hike, some young thru hikers were making too three days at a time. Fall is her favorite time of year for a much noise for the group

The guys heeded her warning. Langley regularly leads groups for the Green Mountain Club. She tries to limit her parties to a half-dozen people and aims to complete six to eight miles; a comfortable pace. The goal is to enjoy the hike and have a safe experience. Trail in Georgia and has 20 miles left in North Carolina. This season she wants to log about 90 miles on the AT. Her group will hike portions of Southwest Virginia, through Damascus, with a goal to finish at Dennis Cove in Tennessee. A special moment Langley loves when hiking the Appalachian Trail in Virginia reminds her of her youth. “You lay down at night in your tent and the whippoorwills sing and sing, and sing again in the morning,'' she said. “It takes me back to my childhood in Wolcott. That’s what I remember: falling asleep to the whippoorwills singing.”
Langley told her doctor, “I work like a dog all day and sleep like a bear at night.”

Upson From A1
Thomas Upson came to Southington from Waterbury in 1732 and established a tin shop on the Marion Avenue homestead. That section of Southington was named by the Upsons, many of whom went to work in Marion, Alabama.
The family had about 300 acres at one time, Stanley said. Sold or donated as protected open space over the years, the last piece is the house, built in 1866. An older saltbox house once on the property is now gone. During the Gold Rush of the mid 19th century, family members traveled to California and sold tin wares to prospectors. Stanley still has some of the trunks they used to bring goods over the oceans and through the isthmus of Panama. “That’s the money that built this house,” she said of the Gold Rush sales.
Home and land Growing up, Stanley knew the Marion Avenue property as her grandparents.’ As an

Savannah, Georgia to the home in 1967.
Her older relatives had done little to the place. It hadn’t been painted in 25 years, Stanley remembered, and only a little patch of yard was cleared of brush. “When we came up we revived it again,” Stanley said of her and her husband. Packing up has been a major undertaking. “When you’re living in a house that’s over 150 years old and every generation that has moved out of it has left something — it has not been an easy house (to pack),” Stanley said. “I doubt if this house has ever been empty since it was built.” SUN

CHIROPRACTIC CARE FOR THE ELDERLY
Back pain and reduced or limited mobility negatively affect daily life, especially for older adults. Some may think that chiropractic services may not be beneficial for the elderly and could even be detrimental. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth, and many seniors are misinformed about the topic. Chiropractic care is a safe and effective treatment for older adults: it can lessen pain and get seniors back to enjoying life. A chiropractor is well-versed in an older adult’s musculoskeletal system and age-related changes, such as muscle loss and decreased flexibility. All treatment plans are customizable to the patient’s individual needs and abilities. Spinal manipulation, nutritional counseling, and fall prevention may be incorporated into the treatment plan. A well-adjusted spine has health benefits throughout the body, and a chiropractor can be a vital resource for information to help people stay well. Geriatric chiropractic care has been shown to reduce the risk of falling. Along with education, exercise, and environmental changes, adjustments can help elderly people stay safe from falls. To schedule an appointment, please call 860-621-2225 or visit us at 200 Queen St., Southington. P.S. Chiropractic care may be a less invasive option for musculoskeletal pain.

As we move forward with strategic planning, we will do so with an emphasis on continuous improvement through a rolling process over the next several years. This ongoing planning approach is a new strategy we are utilizing in an effort to further connect stakeholders to our district areas of focus, projects and initiatives on a regular basis, replacing the former model of a finite number of strategic planning meetings over the course of

In the short term, our next steps in the strategic planning process will include reviewing the data and information collected at the large group meeting, and planning for subsequent stakeholder group meetings aligned with our focus areas over the coming months. Additionally, we will follow the rolling improvement process for additional work to be done over the next several years. Our goal is for this process to continue, to evolve, and to include all those who are interested in being a part of making Plainville Community Schools the model school district in Connecticut. We can only achieve that aim with the collective involvement of our stakeholders. We are grateful for those who have participated to date and those who will join us going forward, because that is the heart of what makes Plainville special. I know that our work together will make a significant difference to the children in our community. Steven LePage is superintendent of Plainville schools.

State Mandates Businesses Offer Retirement Plan to Employees: What you need to know about MyCTSavings In January, the state mandated all Connecticut employers with five or more employees that have been paid more than $5,000 in the calendar year are legally required to join MyCTSavings if they don’t already offer a retirement plan. Registration for MyCTSavings began on April 1, 2022.
Deadlines to register are as follows: • 6/30/22 deadline: Employers with 100 or more employees; • 10/31/22 deadline: Employers with 26 to 99 employees; • 03/30/23 deadline: Employers with five to 25 employees.
The Southington Chamber of Commerce does not endorse participation in any specific retirement plan. The Chamber strongly suggests businesses explore alternative plans in addition to the state mandated MyCTSavings program before deciding which option best suits your business.
Visit MyCTSavings.com for more Information. For a list of Chamber recommended retirement firms visit the business directory at southingtonchamber.com or call the Chamber office at 860.628.8036 for more information.

In Meriden, multiple programs have received such funds, including the Boys & Girls Club of Meriden, for its Cuno Camp and Camp BGC programs, Girls Inc. for its Strong, Smart & Bold Summer Camp program, and the Meriden-New-Britain-Berlin YMCA’s Mountain Mist Day Camp program. Individual programs’ grants have averaged around $25,000. In Wallingford, Ulbrich Boys & Girls Club also received funding, as did the Spanish Community of Wallingford. In Southington, both YMCA Camp Sloper and Camp Naciwonki are among this year’s grant recipients. In Meriden, three city-run sites — Baldwin Pond Park, Habershon Park and Thomas Hooker Elementary School — are also recipients of state funding.
Through the voucher program and other funding the agency is looking to remove barriers to camp participation, including financial burdens and lack of transportation. Some of the funding is used to cover transportation costs. Other funding will be used to extend program hours, Benigni explained.

Benigni said participation in summer camp definitely has an impact. “The more kids that are active, that have something to do over the summer, the better prepared they are for the start of school,” he said. The students will have the benefits of socializing with peers and instructors over the summer, “learning how to be good citizens out of camp,” which Benigni said will help them “learn how to be good citizens in the classroom.”
While funding for vouchers and other program enhancements in the future remain John Benigni, chief executive questions, leaders like Beofficer for the Meriden-New nigni say they will continue Britain-Berlin YMCA, said to look for ways to make the agency has welcomed summer camp accessible. around 650 students to its “The YMCA believes in turnsummer camp sites for the session that started on Mon- ing no one away for inability day. Southington-Cheshire Mark Pooler, chief executive officer for the SouthingtonCheshire Community YMCAs, is optimistic about the grant’s impact on attendance at the camps his agency runs.
Summer camp participation dwindled greatly in 2020. The following year saw a return to normal enrollment. Pooler said this summer his agency has seen a healthy increase in summer camp registrations. He anticipates some 4,000 children will take part in programs at sites including Camp Sloper and Camp Naciwonki. Pooler attributed that in large part to the camps being able to offer more scholarships with the grants. The programs themselves will improve, with more field

trips and special guests slated. The agency has also entered into a partnership with Cheshire Academy to provide swim lessons, Pooler said.
Meriden vouchers, staffing challenge In Meriden, Parks & Recreation Director Chris Bourdon said the city has definitely distributed more vouchers than last year. Bourdon attributed that to the longer window of time during which the vouchers were available for families.
Bourdon didn’t have finalized figures for how many were distributed. The city is weathering staffing challenges at its own recreation facilities. For example, on Monday, Bourdon covered a lifeguard shift at Hubbard Park pool. City recreation staff have been working hand-in-hand with school department and health department staff to ensure that programs continue at indoor facilities during inclement weather, Bourdon explained.
Without those partnerships, Bourdon said, the city would have had to cancel programs on rainy days. Bourdon encouraged families to utilize the vouchers. All five participants, he said, “are great programs.” This year’s program expansion comes after what officials described as a successful summer initiative in 2021.

“Fifteen years is pretty good,” Wayton said. “This was always a word-of-mouth thing and now it’s a legit tournament every summer. We are trying to break our entry record and we are on a pretty good pace this year.” Wayton is a special education teacher at Bristol Central and an assistant coach on the school’s girls tennis team. Wayton said many of his players from BC will be in action next month at the Wayton. Wayton expects the 2022 field to be deep. He noted that high school players from Berlin and Maloney have signed up. Wayton also hopes to see some Southington High School players on their home court. The available divisions are Men’s A Singles; Men’s B Singles; Men’s 45+ Singles; Men’s A Doubles; Men’s B Doubles; Women’s Singles; Women’s Doubles; Mixed A Doubles; Mixed B Doubles; High School Boys Singles; High School Girls Singles; High School Boys Doubles; High School Girls Doubles and Mixed High School Doubles. And then there are the dogs.

“We have some dogs available for adoption on either the first or last day,” Wayton said. “We don’t keep a penny for profit. We cover minimal tournament costs and the rest goes to the dogs.

“We would like to raise as much as $10,000 this year, but that’s a lofty goal,” Wayton added. “Even if a family wants to donate and not play, it goes a long way to help the dogs.”

In all, eight sports were represented at the ceremony. Softball coach Davina Hernandez grew emotional when handing her graduating girls flowers. They were Dom Gaudio (Utica College), Lily Kenefick (ECSU), Nasiah Martinez (Mitchell College) and Kayleigh O’Connor (Roger Williams).
Overall, the Knights were 271 this season. Of the four Division III girls, Gaudio was the only regular starter, but Hernandez said each did her part in the title run. “It’s tough to play in Southington,” said Hernandez. “We have enough talent for two varsity teams and both teams could still win the majority of their games.” Announcing college plans from the baseball team were John O’Connor (Norwich University), Gabe Zamorano (University of St. Joseph), Chris Magzag (Southern Maine Community College), Connor Whitehead (Wentworth Institute of Technology), Brady Aylward (Anna Maria College) and Justin Chiulli (Mitchell College).

cording to coach Joel Stamilio. Ayward was Southington’s man behind the plate and a middle-of-the-order hitter. “He’s our catcher and it’s great to see the maturity of Brady on and off the field,” said Southington coach Joel Stamillo. “He’s a rock on and off the field and in the middle of our lineup. He’s just an unbelievable teammate.” Stamillo called Magzag the team’s “dirt dog” and one of its toughest players. He added that O’Connor was one of the quiet leaders on the squad. Whitehead led Southington through the state tournament with fellow starting pitcher Vincent Borghese. Southington boys lacrosse had four athletes commit: Sebastian Foresi (Keene State), Owen Huard (Illinois Tech), Nathan Hunt (University of New England) and Rory Missal (ECSU).
Golfer Brooke Zajac is coming off a strong senior campaign — the Blue Knights shifted to fall golf this year — and she will be heading to York College in Pennsylvania. “Brooke Zajac was an amazing golfer for the team,” coach John O’Neill said. “She qualified for girls state and girls Open and she
