Plainville News Teacher of the Year Plainville Community Schools named Middle School of Plainville educator Melanie Olmstead its 20222023 Teacher of the Year. The health teacher was nominated by MSP colleague Amy Tennant. "Melanie’s interest in helping students is sincere. The students know this and they seek her out at all different times of the day for her guidance and help,” Tennant stated in her nomination letter. “Being able to withstand or recover quickly from diffi-
cult situations defines resilience. Melanie teaches her students ways to tap into their strength by being their support system at school to help them see they can work through their problems and overcome their challenges.” During her nine years at the Middle School of Plainville, Olmstead has supported a wide variety of programs and initiatives, including spearheading the annual Veterans Day celebration with colleagues, and organizing “Sweats for Vets,” a drive to support local veterans in need.
Also, Olmstead is a member of the Wellness Committee, serves as the Education Association of Plainville’s Middle School Building Representative, and is the leader of the Unified Arts Team. Additionally, she serves as the school’s Ski Club Advisor. Olmstead holds a master of science degree in Health Education from Southern Connecticut State University and a sixth year degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of St. Joseph.
THANK YOU to the sponsors of the June 2022 Klingberg Vintage Motorcar Series
“Being selected as Teacher of the Year for MSP and now the district level is an honor that I will always hold dear," said Olmstead. "Bringing sunshine to the students is what I strive to do daily. They probably don't realize it, but they do more for me than I do for them. I will proudly represent Plainville at the state level."

Barack Obama, 2014: “Those early patriots may have come from different backgrounds and different walks of life, but they were united by a belief in a simple truth: that we are all created equal, that we are all endowed by our Creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these rights are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. But our success is only possible because we have never treated those self-evident truths as self-executing. Generations of Americans have marched, organized, petitioned, fought, and even died to extend those rights to others, to widen the circle of opportunity for others, and to perfect this Union we love so much.”

You don’t know it unless you’ve been on it.” Quick takes over for John Cessario, who coached Southington boys basketball from the 2014-15 season through this past winter. Prior to that, Bob Lasbury led the program for 14 years. Cessario went 67-89 in his eight seasons. His teams qualified for the state tournament three times and reached the Division III quarterfinals in 2017-18. That year the Blue Knights were 16-7, the best record they posted in Cessario’s tenure. Southington was 4-16 this past winter, a season that saw a number of starters leave the team midseason. By late April, the opening for Southington varsity basketball head coach was posted. Both Risser and Cessario declined to discuss the circumstances that led to it. See Quick, A11

Ed Quick was hired as the new head coach of the Southington boys basketball program last week. Quick, a Southington resident, is seen here at the Mortensen Community Center in Newington, where he had been head coach of the Nor’easters, dating back to 2017. Quick has coaching experience at both the high school and college level. Aaron Flaum, Record-Journal
From A10
“We are appreciative of the efforts of John Cessario and his staff in his eight-year tenure,” Risser said Thursday. “We wish him well in the future. His contributions were significant.” That being said, Risser is excited about Quick’s addition to Southington athletics. “He has more 30 years of coaching experience of coaching in high school and college basketball,” the AD said. “It’s an attractive skill set and he has great knowledge about the CCC, and we are excited about him joining us.”
“Ed is a great leader of young men with a great knowledge of the game. He holds kids to standards and he will demand your best effort every day,” the Newington AD said. “It’s tough to lose him with his situation. “100 percent he will fit in well in Southington; he will fit in anywhere,” Meyers added. “You just have to allow him to do his job. Hold people accountable, set standards and allow them to get those standards. That’s why we got along so well. We both believe in no shortcuts. Everything is earned and nothing is given.”

Vitcavage arrived at Kennedy in 2014 after serving as director of school counseling at Meriden’s Platt High School for nearly a decade. In fact, Vitcavage was an educator in Meriden for more than two decades. She holds a sixth-year educational leadership certificate, a master’s degree in school counseling and an elementary education degree, all from Central Connecticut State University. While in Meriden, Vitcavage also served as a school counselor and instructional associate at Nathan Hale Elementary School, and as a teacher at Washington Middle School, and Hale and Thomas Hooker Elementary School. Vitcavage is a native of the Silver City whose family has since settled into Southington.

Vitcavage said she applies many of the practices she learned in her previous counseling roles in her current role as a building leader.

“I do put a lot of the counseling practices I learned in-
to everyday work to support students, families and staff. I want to continue building the relationships we have with students and families,” Vitcavage said. Vitcavage identified community building at Kennedy as a priority for the upcoming school year. She intends to enhance the community building efforts that are currently underway. Vitcavage also identified supporting Kennedy’s “incredible” teaching staff as another priority. “I look forward to working with each of the teams to support their teaching and learning as well — to just be that person who is here to support them and guide them,” Vitcavage said. Vitcavage credited several former educators, who she described as role models, in her own ascension to building principal. The first was her former elementary school principal, Liz Meah, who led Hanover Elementary School in Meriden when Vitcavage was a student there. Another was Donna Mik, who was principal at Platt when Vitcavage was a counselor at that school. See Principals, A20

Meanwhile, over at Thalberg, Nattrass succeeds Katherine Reeves, who had been the school’s principal since 2018. Madancy said Reeves is stepping down to pursue new career opportunities.
“We worked very closely together,” Vitcavage said. A third was former Derynoski Elementary principal Karen Smith, who led that school when Vitcavage’s children attended. Another role model was the late Brian Goralski, former chairman of the Board of Education.

“I’ve always aspired to be like those role models. And I always wanted to be at the forefront of a successful school,” Vitcavage said.

Madancy said Vitcavage “brings a wealth of experience and knowledge specific” to Kennedy following her eight years as assistant principal and has “demonstrated a strong dedication to the Kennedy community and staff.” Vitcavage’s starting salary is $156,912.
In a letter to Thalberg families, Madancy thanked Reeves for her contributions and wished her well in her future endeavors. Madancy stated Nattrass begins her new assignment “with seven years of successful leadership experience” at South End, and 17 years overall as an educator in Southington. “Erin demonstrates real strength at fostering and developing relationships, cultivating a sense of community, and an unwavering passion for teaching and learning that comes with high expectations for academic outcomes for all students,” Madancy wrote. The superintendent added he is confident Nattrass “will maintain and build upon the wonderful community environment” that has been established at Thalberg. Madancy, in a separate letter to South End families, thanked Nattrass for her leadership of that school over the past seven years. He stated central office interviews for her successor will be conducted the week of July 18. The Board of Education will interview finalists the following week. Nattrass will earn $157,418 in the upcoming year.

The announcement comes after Switala led the Blue Knights to a 21-4 record and to the brink of the school's first state baseball title since 1999. Southington lost the 2022 Class LL final to Fairfield-Warde, 7-5. Switala stepped in this past season as interim head coach for Charlie Lembo, who died on May 28 of cancer at the age of 61. Lembo had coached SHS for 10 seasons until his health issues forced him to step away prior to the 2022 season.
Knights to their fifth state title game in 11 seasons, Switala was offered and accepted the head coaching position on June 24. He was interviewed by a search committee that included Southington Athletic Director Steve Risser. “A week before (Lembo) passed away, I sent him a text message and said, ‘Hey, coach, thanks for giving me the opportunity to coach on your staff,’” Switala said. “I'm not sure he ever saw it, but I really appreciated Coach Lembo bringing me on the staff and giving me this op-

Sealing the deal was a conversation Switala had with Lembo last year. The two spoke about baseball and the community Switala now calls home. "I spoke to Coach Lembo for the first time on the phone after talking with other high school coaches in the area because I still wanted to coach," Switala said. "He really talked me into coming to Southington. He said it was a great baseball town. He really sold the town and baseball program to us."
“I just want to thank (Lembo),” continued Switala. "He gave me the opportunity to coach this year. He didn't know me. I was some guy 3,000 miles away.”

Both Switala, 45, and his wife Jamie are retired from law enforcement. Switala, who grew up on Long Island, moved his family back to the East Coast last spring to be closer to his family. A successful high school coach in California, Switala wanted to remain in coaching. The Blue Knights' rich history on the baseball diamond proved to be a determining factor in Switala and his family deciding to live in Southington.
