Apple Harvest Race adds new twist By Sean Krofssik Record-Journal staff
SOUTHINGTON — The Apple Harvest Festival Road Race has been an autumn tradition for 43 years and the race is always looking to add new facets to its event, which takes place on Oct. 2.

businesses and agencies will participate and register in the 5K road race as a “corporate team.” The team with the lowest time average of three runners will win the Chamber Corporate Cup trophy. Also, one trophy will be given for the male runners and one for female runners. And the

Rosin graduated from the Catholic University of America in 2003 with a degree in political science. “I didn’t really think I was going to be a language teacher,” she said. “There were opportunities for a language teacher and I’d always taken Spanish.”
From A1
School Superintendent Steven Madancy described Rosin as a “quintessential professional” who helps new teachers.
Teaching language and culture
“She demonstrates a passion for lifelong learning as a professional, develops strong relationships with students, and gives back to the community she serves through various civic engagement efforts,” Madancy said. “I couldn’t be happier for Bethany as she is so deserving of this accolade.”
Rosin lived in Guatemala for a semester and did volunteer work in Costa Rica to improve her language skills. Spending time in another country was about more than just learning Spanish, though.

“Especially since I’ve been teaching, language classes have changed. We’re much less focused on learning the language and it’s much more focused on learning the culture,” Rosin said. “We get to compare and contrast culture and understand how kids and people in other cultures are similar and different than us.”
She’d been awarded the Funds for Teachers grant in 2020 but the trip was postponed due to the pandemic. Education is in some ways back to normal, according to Rosin, and in other ways still different.

Town leaders split on garbage contracts By Jesse Buchanan Record-Journal staff
SOUTHINGTON — A Democratic Town Council member who owns a local hauling company clashed with council leaders over town garbage and recycling contracts. In a party-line vote, the Town Council voted Monday night in favor of awarding contracts for trash removal at town properties to AJ Waste Systems and All Waste. Six Republicans, who hold a majority on the council, prevailed over three Democrats to approve the three-year contracts.
Work includes removing waste from Town Hall, the Calendar House senior center, the Public Works facility on Della Bitta Drive, the Police Station and other municipal properties. The contracts also include removing recycling from town parks. Jack Perry, a Democrat and owner of HQ Dumpsters & Recycling, has held many of those contracts for years. He didn’t bid on any of them this year, saying he believes by changing the scope of the contracts the town could save around $30,000 per year. See Trash, A56

Against many odds, he mastered winning and succeeding in many aspects of his life. At just 17 years old, Dennis met the love of his life, Eileen, while in high school. They cherished 56 beautiful years together, including many nights as a young couple booking music and club venues for some of the hottest music groups out at the time. It was love at first sight for them both, and she supported his business efforts every step of the way. Together, they had one child: Mark, who inherited Dennis’s quick wit, Setback skills, and zest for life. Mark was his pride and joy, best friend, and business partner, of whom he enjoyed owning a golf course with and seeking out spectacular golf

White nationalist hate groups in the US have increased 55% throughout the Trump era, according to a May report by the Southern Poverty Law Center. In a letter to the editor published in the RecordJournal, Elaine Donovan, of the Social Justice Committee of the United Universalist Church in Meriden, responded to the timing of the flyer, dropped over the July 4th weekend, and its description of the Black Lives Matter movement as a “criminal,” “anti-white street gang.” “Black Lives Matter is a movement for people of all colors advocating and de-
manding equal justice under the law,” Donovan wrote. “It is not a ‘gang.’ There is nothing more American than standing up against injustice. When the majority of Americans saw the injustice done to George Floyd and others, they understood why the Black Lives Matter movement was important and approved.” Donovan decried the action to recruit on July 4th as “the opposite of what our country is about, ‘that all men (and women) are created equal.’ We support and advocate for equal justice for all.” Donovan and others called for people to stand up and unite against hate. “We would like to see all the good people of Meriden and all the churches of Meriden stand up and speak up against this hatred and division, sown by white supremacists, and the violence that it breeds. Please join us and “Side with Love,’” she wrote.
The New England Nationalist Social Club is also called NSC-131 and has been recently involved in recruitment and protest activity in the greater Boston area and in Rhode Island, experts say. Attorney generals from New England states have labeled the group a street gang, according to a recent report from NPR. Several communities in Connecticut have organized unity rallies opposing the group’s recent recruitment push. The discovery of the flyers disturbed residents who found them scattered in the streets and on lawns. Similar flyers were found in the towns of Berlin, Southington, West Hartford and Bristol during the same weekend. “It is unsettling, to say the least,” said Erin Walton, who lives across from Hubbard Park. “I know that groups like these exist, but I didn’t expect to find them where I live — it just hit home for me.”

Discovering new surprises in familiar territory From the Record-Journal: This is a good summer to stay home. Okay, we’re not suggesting you don’t leave your yard, but given the daunting prices at the gas station, it’s a good time to revisit the concepts of a staycation or a daycation. Let’s define “home” as, say, a radius of no more than an hour’s drive from where you live. Let’s look at how to liven up the summer without long stretches of highway getting in the way. Record-Journal contributor Francesca Fontanez recently revived the daycation idea with an interesting itinerary for folks who live

ELECTION 2022
Candidates discuss abortion rights By Michael Gagne Record-Journal staff
In the weeks following the U.S. Supreme Court decision in late June that effectively struck down the longstanding constitutional right to end a pregnancy through abortion, Democrats and Republicans running for federal and statewide office this November have weighed in.
Blumenthal
Hayes
Klarides acknowledged the rhetoric around reproductive rights “will be heated Democratic incumbents U.S. and adversarial” in the lead up to November’s contest. Rep. Jahana Hayes and U.S. Klarides instead urged a “foSen. Richard Blumenthal have vowed to protect access cus on the issues ... such as making Connecticut a safer, to abortion and to combat more affordable place to potential efforts federally to raise a family and start a limit other reproductive business.” healthcare rights, including access to contraception. Hayes, on the day of the
Republican George Logan of Meriden, who is running against Hayes for the 5th Congressional District seat, told the Record-Journal he supports the statute currently on the books in Connecticut, which guarantees access to abortion while strictly banning late-term procedures — except when necessary to save the life of an expectant mother. Republican Themis Klarides, who is challenging Blumenthal in his bid for re-election, has stated she is unapologetically pro-choice and that she has “worked for years” in the state legislature “to protect women’s right to access safe early-term abortion services.” Klarides, of Seymour, formerly served as House minority leader in the state General Assembly. “Despite the fear-mongering from Connecticut’s Democrats, I absolutely will not support any Congressional efforts for a national abortion ban. Those who know me and have served with me know all too well that no one — especially not Mitch McConnell — will bully me into voting for something in which I don’t believe,” Klarides stated.
Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, described the decision as one that “is horrifying and jeopardizes the health care of millions.”
“For decades, we have seen the right to choose under attack, and today, those rights have been stripped away in one swift decision. Banning abortions will not stop abortions; it only compels women to risk their lives and health by seeking unsafe abortion care. Reproductive care and abortion access are essential. I will continue to fight so every person can make their personal health care decisions.” Last Tuesday, Hayes and Blumenthal, joined by U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra, Planned Parenthood of Southern New England President and CEO Amanda Skinner and Gov. Ned Lamont addressed reporters in front of the Planned Parenthood center in Waterbury. The press conference followed a visit inside the center and a roundtable discussion with center leaders, staff and patients. Hayes said the issue of maternal health is one that is

very important and personal for her. She told reporters Black and brown women are 2 ½ times more likely to die in the months immediately following childbirth “because they don’t have access to care, because they’re not believed when they talk about care.” Blumenthal urged Becerra and President Joe Biden’s administration to use the authority of the executive branch and federal agencies, like the Food & Drug Administration, to enable access to medication and abortion care through telemedicine and other means, “to show states that the federal government is on the side of women who want to exercise these rights.

could include emergency care services — which could include abortion care services,” Becerra said. Later in the week, President Biden signed an executive order intended to stave off penalties that women who seek abortion may face after the Dobbs ruling, according to Associated Press reports. The Associated Press reported that the order cannot restore access to abortion in states that have already enacted strict limits or have banned the procedure altogether.

The executive order outlines several other steps, including legal assistance for women and abortion providers and a task force to safeguard access to abortion. Logan told the Record-Journal in a phone interview the overturning of Roe v. Wade doesn’t affect Connecticut. “Women’s right to choose is codified in state law,” Logan said, explaining he is “adamantly opposed” to late-term abortions.
Logan said there is a “stark difference” between his views and those of Hayes, his opponent, who he said does not support parental notification and has made it clear “she supports late-term abortions of unborn babies.” Logan said medical reasons, when an expectant mother’s life is at risk, for such procedures are rare. “She believes girls under the age of 18 or 16 shouldn’t have to notify their parents they’re having abortions. That is not what I believe. Parents should be notified of their children looking to have an abortion,” Logan said. Hayes’ office issued a statement in response to Logan’s accusations. “Parental consent falls out of the Congresswoman’s federal jurisdiction and is a state issue. The Congresswoman supports a woman’s right to make medical decisions, in consultation with her doctor, about every aspect of her pregnancy without government intervention,” wrote Annmarie Goyzueta, spokeswoman for Hayes’ office. Logan said he supports laws that would require parental notification when a minor under 18 years old seeks an abortion.
Governor’s race In the gubernatorial race, Republican Bob Stefanowski has taken a stance similar to that of Logan’s. “I will continue to support Connecticut’s state law, which has codified a woman’s right to choose, with an appropriate ban on lateterm abortion,” Stefanowski stated. “Governor Lamont takes the extreme position that parents don’t even have a right to know their daughter is considering an abortion, while I support mandaSee Abortion, A57

Trash From A10
He and other Democrats voted against awarding the contracts Monday night, urging that they be rewritten and then bid again. “I want our town to be looking at our services, that we’re not wasting, that we’re using our town staff well,” Perry said. Michael DelSanto, a Republican councilor and chairman of the public works subcommittee, said Perry’s concerns should have been brought up earlier.
Perry said he thought it best to speak on the issue as a councilor at a public council meeting since he’s not on the subcommittee.
where more trash is generated, the town could order a larger dumpster and still save money throughout the year.
DelSanto and other Republicans voted in favor of awarding the contracts, which total about $65,000 per year.
With inflation and costs rising, Perry said it was important to scrutinize how the town spends money and what services it actually needs.
Suggestions for savings The largest cost portion of those contracts is $35,000 per year for emptying a 30yard public works dumpster. Perry said the town has trucks that can take that dumpster directly to Covanta, which accepts trash, and save the majority of what’s spent on paying a company to haul it there.
“We have to trust that the heads of our departments are going to look through “We have the staff, we have these bids and make sure the equipment,” he said. the bids that come through are the same,” DelSanto said. Perry also wanted the town to consider smaller savings Perry was present at the such as using smaller, lesspublic works subcommittee meeting where the contracts expensive bins at some buildings. He’s seen dumpwere discussed but didn’t sters that are only partially voice any concerns at that full and said during times time.
“Nothing has ever been changed,” he said of the bid specifications. “You’ve got to re-look at it.” Annette Turnquist, public works director, said that the town could look into some of Perry’s suggestions. She was hesitant about using town workers to bring the public work dumpsters to the Covanta plant, saying the department already hauls debris from the transfer station. That work takes time and staff resources and sometimes crews are hauling every week. There’s also a special certification needed for the roll-off trucks that not all of the public works drivers have.

frequent conflicts of interest and declined to name him to the subcommittee last year.
“There’s staffing and time constraints as well,” Turnquist said.
Perry said his expertise in trucks and hauling would be an asset to the town. Perry said he’s taken criticism as a company owner and been sidelined as a Democratic councilor.
HQ’s town contracts Perry’s company has won contracts for town trash hauling for years. He decided against bidding on the work this year so that he could suggest changes to the contract scope and structure without creating the impression that he was trying to modify the contract to better win it. Had the council agreed to change the contract, Perry said he still wouldn’t have bid on it. Most of his business is residential trash hauling, and Perry said saving the town money was more important to him. “I’d rather not bid it and I’d rather change the structure,” he said. His contracts with the town kept him off the council’s public work subcommittee. Republican and council Chairwoman Victoria Triano said Perry would run into
“Any idea that I ever have that’s good, they don’t give any credibility,” he said. “I want them to stop saying that I’m here (on the council) for financial gains or work. I’m there to serve my community.” HQ would have likely gotten about 80 percent of the work had the company bid this year, Perry said, since his prices would have been lower than the other companies’. DelSanto said there was nothing stopping HQ from bidding and saving the town money that way. Perry could have recused himself from the contract vote to avoid a conflict. “HQ had the opportunity to bid on the project. They didn’t,” DelSanto said. jbuchanan@record-journal.com 203-317-2230

Free museum program returns By Lau Guzmán Record-Journal staff
Connecticut children can attend over 130 museums for free this summer through Connecticut Summer at the Museum, according to an announcement from Gov. Ned Lamont. The program, started in 2021, comes at a time where many students missed out on hands-on educational opportunities. Aiming to
provide children with engaging learning experiences, the program also makes it easier for low-income families to access the state’s cultural resources. “Free museum admission is a great way to spark children’s curiosity and keep them engaged before next school year, continuing their learning at no cost to mom and dad,” said Lt. Banner year for CATS gymnastics CHESHIRE – CATS Gymnastics wrapped up a big season with several state championships over the season, which concluded in late May. The gym’s Level 3 team took first place in seven of its nine meets. The squad was highlighted by Cheshire’s Tess Cianchetti, 11, and Ashley Syzdek, 10, and Bristol’s Everley Norris, 8, placing first in the allaround in most of those meets. The Level 3 team started the season with seven athletes and finished with six after one of the gymnasts moved away. “It was their first year competing as a seven-man squad and the top three scores count,” CATS coach Wes Norris said. “Other teams have 15 to 20 kids, and our kids had to hit for you to win. You can’t afford any mistakes. They didn’t place top three in the state because the top five scores count at states, and at that time we only had six kids.”
great leader. Before the state meet, we were in workout and I stopped everyone to watch her vault. I said that is going to be your state champion on vault, and she went on and did it. Her vault has been great all year.” CATS hadn’t competed since March of 2020. That season was cut short, and Norris decided not to do any competitions and just focus on training. “Last year we chose not to compete, and half the gyms in the state chose not to compete,” Norris said. “Because of the COVID numbers and meets being cancelled at the last minute we decided to just train.” “We didn’t know what to expect going into the season,” Norris added. “One of the groups — the Xcel Bronze — had 19 kids who have never competed before. They won 90 percent of their

meets. I had no idea what to expect of them. I’m proud of them — they went on to win the state championship at the University of Bridgeport. The first meet they were starstruck. To go from that to a state championship was amazing.”
“Another huge surprise,” Norris said. “This is a kid a year ago that I thought was going to quit the sport. It didn’t seem like her heart was into it, and out of nowhere this fall she had a spark. She started working very hard and had a blast in the gym. Her attitude has

“For Riley, that was a huge accomplishment,” Norris said. “The biggest reason is because she had been struggling throughout the season with mental blocks, which is common for teenagers. At the state meet she stayed on the balance beam. Had she not stayed on, she would not have been the state champion and I’m very proud of her.”
changed for the better. She won just about every meet she went into, culminating in a state championship on bars and floor. She fell on beam, otherwise she would have been a state champion. She was probably the biggest surprises all year.”
