The number of teen drivers has de creased nationally for a variety of reasons, a trend noticed by officials at local driving schools. “These days, people are not moti vated to get their license,” said Jay Alvarez, owner of Shield Driving School in Meriden. “The younger driver, they don’t want their li cense. They don’t want that re sponsibility. A lot of the parents are forcing their kids to get their li cense at 16 because they need them to get a job, they need them to go to practice, they need them to go to school.”

“So, when I was producing scores that were even with, or better than the elite youth bowlers, it showed I be longed with the elite bowlers in the country,” Buck added. Even in missing the matchplay portion of the tourna ment, Buck’s final five-game block of 875 pins in the Ad vancers Final round bested No. 1 seed Keegan Alexander of Texas by four pins.
“It was always our dream to share some of our most tra ditional dishes for the peo ple to enjoy as much as we do,” said Juan Carlos Juarez, who moved to the U.S. from Oaxaca, Mexico. “I wanted a place where I felt safe and where I could raise my kids in, so we end ed up in Plainville,” he said. “We love Connecticut and how quiet Plainville is. It is a small town where everyone knows everyone and a per fect community to raise your kids in My daughter went through the Plainville Schools, and we are so lucky to be in such a great district.” Don Taco took over a space which had been home to a pizza restaurant, and many alterations had to be made to get the Mexican eatery up and running. “Everything we use is fresh. If we have something for the main dish that doesn’t get used, we will just use it in something else, so it doesn’t get wasted,” Juan Carlos Juarez pointed out. “With in flation prices, we can’t afford to waste anything.”
SOUTHINGTON Surreal. That is the word that de scribed Sean Buck’s run at the Junior Gold youth na tional bowling tournament, held last month in Muskegon, Mich. Buck, a 15-year-old incom ing sophomore at Southing ton High School, finished 20th in the U15 boys division at Junior Gold. The top fin isher among New England youth bowlers and fifth among bowlers from the East Coast, Buck competed against the country’s top 630 bowlers in his age group over five days. Buck never fell outside the top 15 until his final place ment July 22. As one of the 90 bowlers to make the cut and move into the Advancers Round, Buck started the long day of bowling strong with games of 230 and 209. He finished the morning round with a five-game block of 966 to move into 11th place. The top 56 bowlers then came back that afternoon for another five games. Again, Buck put himself into posi tion to move into the final 16 with a fourth game of 191. But in what would be his fi nal game of the grueling week, Buck slipped to 151. “It really showed how good of a bowler I am,” Buck said. “Being from Connecticut, not many good bowlers come out of this state.”

In Connecticut, the number of teens getting their learner’s permit has mostly stayed even in recent years, about 25,000 per year, said Tony Guerrera, deputy commissioner of the state Department of Motor Ve hicles. However, he did notice a slight dip in 2020 when 23,693 teens received a learn er’s permit. “People were scared to get in to vehicles with other people because of COVID,” Guerrera
“I think you are seeing some students waiting until they are 18 so they can just drive with out restrictions,” Stanley said.
Luca, owner of EZLern Driving School in Meri den, said the cost of driving is prompting some teens to wait. “Getting a license, that’s not the major cost,” Luca said. “It’s what happens when you get the license. The automobile, the gas, the insurance.”
Luca said that she has seen an increase in students between the ages of 19 and 21. Older students only have to take an eight hour course. “They come in, they have some driving experience,” Lu ca said. “We’re just more or less checking them out, mak ing sure that they are ready to take a test …”
Brandon Dufour, founder and chief executive officer of The Next Street driving school, said the number of 16 and 17 year old driving students has steadily decreased over the past 10 years. Next Street has locations throughout New England, including in Wall ingford, Southington and “Cheshire.Theaccess to social media and ability for young adults to communicate without having to be together makes a car and license less needed,” Dufour Guerrerasaid.

Paul Rossi, owner of Hidden Valley Miniature Golf on West Street, revamped his putting course in 2020 and removed batting cages. Cote has talked with Rossi about his plans and the two are in agreement that there’s room for more than one miniature golf course in town. “There’s definitely a demand for family entertainment,” Rossi said. “With mini golf, everybody can do it.” “We want to bring people to our neighborhood here If you’ve got a couple choices, it’s all the better,” Rossi said. “There’s a lot of people who are into mini golf. They’ll come play my place, they’ll play his place the same day.” Rossi was reluctant to re move his batting cages but said he couldn’t afford to keep them open for the dwindling number of cus tomers who wanted it. How ever, there’s still demand that he’s glad Cote can meet. “I get people every single day, ‘Hey, where’s the cages?’” Rossi said. “They’ve been gone for three years.” Whatever amenities are of fered, Rossi told Cote that they have to be top-notch. “That’s the hard thing. For us here, we spend so much money on landscaping and flowers and upkeep. But if you don’t do it, you’re dead,” Rossi said. “You have to be constantly making people come and be impressed by what you have.”

She dedicated most of her life to raising her two daughters and worked as a bartender at the Falcon’s Club where she always put a smile on everyone’s faces. Janine enjoyed spending her free time camping at Lone Oaks. She was a loving wife, proud mother and grandmother and wonderful friend to many. She will be deeply missed. In addition to her husband Kevin Sobolewski, Janine is survived by her two daughters, Breanna Matthews and husband Tyler and Brooke Sobolewski and one cherished granddaughter Riley, who was her pride and joy. She is also survived by her mother Mary DeGumbia, two brothers, Vinny and Jason DeGumbia, as well as several nieces and nephews. Janine was predeceased by her best friend, Shelly Hatheway. In lieu of flowers, donations in Janine’s memory may be made to the Oncology Department at MidState Medical Center, Development Office, 435 Lewis Ave., Meriden, CT 06451. A celebration of Janine’s life will be held at a future date. Plantsville Funeral Home has been entrusted with handling the arrangements. ‘forcanwEssentialorkersapply$1,000hero’pay
In a July 9 story, the Hartford Courant reported that more than 1,000 Connecticut resi dents have offered to help Ukrainian refugees with re settlement issues such as housing, government bene fits and accessing services. While these are all positive moves, there are still many worries that make the move to the United States difficult. Anderson’s family and other resettled Ukrainians spoke of their deep concerns for rela tives, some elderly, who re main in their native country. Iryna Hizhytsa’s daughter, Yevheniia Sheremet, said the transition to America is diffi cult to describe. “I know I’m in a safe place and things are good, but I miss things from Ukraine. My father is there, my broth er is there,” Sheremet said. She’s also worried about waning focus among Ameri cans. “The war isn’t over. We need some help to finish this thing,” she said. It is right and reassuring to see local efforts keeping the faith with the Ukrainian peo ple, standing by them here and abroad. That resolve must continue.
Refugees receive strong local support
A Southington woman and her family recently helped relatives resettle here after they fled from a perilous sit uation in Odesa, Ukraine. That assistance is one exam ple of a movement in Con necticut that has seen more than 1,000 residents offering similar support to Ukrainian “refugees. It’skind of hard to stay in a place where bombs are fly ing all around,” Iryna Hizhytsa said in an interview with Record-Journal reporter Jesse Buchanan. Her com ments were translated through her daughter, Alexandra Anderson. Anderson, who came to the U.S. in 2005, has lived in Southington for years. Her relatives are among Ukraini ans who came to Southing ton following Russia’s inva sion earlier this year. Anderson’s sister and four other relatives moved in with Anderson and her hus band and their two daugh ters. Space is tight but there are beds for everyone. Support for Anderson’s ex tended family locally has been exceptional. That will ingness to ease the transi tion can be seen in a variety of initiatives. There are on going efforts for those who remain in Ukraine as well despite how the urgency of the situation seems to have faded from the headlines. Anderson said support for Ukrainians hasn’t wavered. “Everybody in Southington stayed with it,” she said. “People in town consistently stayed with it.”
Meriden Rotary recently hosted a lunch with speaker Galyna Latham, who works with Maidan United, a Con necticut-based nonprofit or ganization with a mission to provide medical supplies to the people of Ukraine. The Meriden and Wallingford Rotary Clubs recently raised more than $20,000 for Ukraine CulturalSouthingtonrelief.CommunityArtsplansanart ex hibit in September focused on Ukrainian women artists. One of the artists, Olga Tsy fanski, came to the United States in 2008. An Avon resi dent, she’s learning tradi tional Ukrainian embroi dery. Tsyfanski plans to use proceeds from art sales to help fund critical supplies and even military equip ment for soldiers.

Southington&PlainvilleCitizen|southingtoncitizen.comFriday,August12,2022 A21 following this weekend’s soft “launch.Connecticut’s essential workers have gone above and beyond during the pan demic to keep our state safe and running.” said State Comptroller Natalie Braswell in a statement. “This new Premium Pay Program is an other way for us to return the favor.”Funding for the initiative was included in the new state budget approved by the Democratic controlled Gen eral Assembly and Gov. Ned Lamont earlier this year. Sometimes dubbed “hero pay,” the funds will be dis tributed to critical workers such as grocery store em ployees and non-govern ment medical staff who were on the job between March 10, 2020 and May 7, 2022 and unable to work from home. Union officials in Connecti cut have said more money is needed to compensate all of the essential workers who risked their lives during the pandemic. The Connecticut AFL-CIO, an umbrella feder ation of unions, voted last year to recommend roughly $218 million in unallocated federal pandemic funds be spent on pandemic pay. The Premium Pay Program is one of two state initiatives created to help essential workers. A separate $34 mil lion Connecticut Essential Worker COVID-19 Assis tance Fund is also available to help those who lost wages and faced out-of-pocket medical expenses and burial costs due to COVID-19. Nearly $560,00 has been dis tributed so far, as state offi cials try to spread the word about the program. A link is available on the Premium Pay Program website.
