Higher Med doc touts healing power of marijuana

PLAINVILLE Dr. Paulina Miklosz believes marijuana can improve the quality of life of people suffering from a myriad of afflictions. That’s why she opened Higher Med, a clinic where patients learn how cannabis may benefit them, and if they qualify for the state’s medi cal marijuana program.

Located at 53 Whiting St., Higher Med opened in early June.

“A lot of blood, sweat and tears went into this place,” said Miklosz, who started the business from home during the pandemic. At first, it was a telehealth operation, but soon it be came clear to Miklosz that she needed a proper office in which to meet with pa tients.

Plainville schools aim to ‘build back’ after COVID disruptions

PLAINVILLE Students waiting for the bus on Mo hawk Road were all smiles on Thursday, Sept. 1, the first day of school in Plainville. Soon, the youngsters would be en route to Wheeler Elemen tary School. Like many parents, Michelle Chaput had mixed emotions about waving goodbye to her kids 5-year-old Emily and 9-year-old Cooper.

“I’m a little sad because

Emily is going off to kindergarten, and she is the last one,” Chaput said. “But I’m excited because they are excited to make new friends and have a great year.”

With COVID-19 waning, and pandemic-related re strictions lifted, Superin tendent of Schools Steven LePage has high hopes for this school year, as well. “I am absolutely excited and energized for the opportu nities we have to build

After graduating from South ington High in 2014, Cochrane attended Eastern Connecticut State University, where she studied commu nication and writing and had several short stories published in the college’s lit erary magazine.

“She started it eight years ago. So you can really see where it all came together and how her writing has im proved even from when she

The book was released in June through Archway Pub lishing. Archway offers pro grams for authors to selfpublish while they assist with editing and cover de sign, making the book avail able on Amazon in both dig ital and paperback.

"This is our visionary goal," the superintendent added, "and I am committed to the steps necessary to get us

there. We have the best kids, staff, and community, and the resources we need to get better and better."

This year, Plainville schools boast improved safety and security systems, and new school branding and logos.

Also, LePage said, "There will be restorations of dis trict programs that were dis rupted due to COVID re strictions, such as the ele mentary jazz band returning this year, with close to 50 kids typically involved and performing at a high level. They are invited to play at halftime during a Hartford Wolf Pack game and will

very likely do so this year."

Student enrollment in town sits at 2,277. For those young scholars, and their teachers, LePage hopes for "an out standing year of learning, growth, positive experi ences, relationship-building, and positive memory-mak ing."

"We are Plainville Commu nity Schools, and I am proud to be the leader of this out standing and improving community," the superinten dent said.

Gov. Ned Lamont has a 10 percentage point lead over Republican Bob Ste fanowski in an Emerson College Polling survey released Tuesday morning, provid ing the first public polling snapshot of the Connecticut governor’s race since May.

The survey of 1,000 voters conducted for WTNH and The Hill between Sept. 7 and 9 found Lamont leading Stefanowski, 48.5% to 38.4%, with 9% undecided two months before the election Nov. 8. Four percent favored someone else.

Emerson’s poll shows little movement from its survey conducted on May 10 and 11, which found Lamont leading Ste fanowski, 51% to 38%, with 12% undecid ed.

The new survey comes as voters are bom barded by television advertising by two well-financed campaigns and several su per PACs, mostly offering harshly negative assessments of the first-term Democratic governor and his Republican challenger.

Emerson found Lamont to be weathering the ad assault better than Stefanowski.

The first-term Democratic governor’s fa vorable/unfavorable rating was 55% to 40%, while voters split on the GOP chal

lenger, 45% to 45%.

Asked who was more trustworthy, 56.7% chose Lamont and 43.3% named Ste fanowski.

Advancing Connecticut, a super PAC funded by the Republican Governors As sociation, recently upped its budget for at tacks on Lamont by $500,000, to $1.5 mil lion. CT Truth PAC, funded by two busi nessmen, has spent $1.6 million opposing Lamont.

The Democratic Governors Association has invested $2.75 million in its own super PAC, Stronger CT, for ads attacking Ste fanowski.

Lamont benefits from a considerable gen der gap in the Emerson poll, with an 18point lead among women. His lead among men was less than 3 points.

A Quinnipiac University poll released on May 26 had Lamont with a narrower lead, 51% to 43%.

Connecticut’s last three gubernatorial races were closer: Democrat Dannel P. Malloy won an open seat in 2010 by less than a percentage point and was reelected in 2014 by 2.6 points.

Lamont won by 3 points in 2018.

PLANTSVILLEMargaret Louise, “Lou” “Granny” Nichols, passed Saturday, September 17, 2022, surrounded by her children and comforted by their love.

Born January 19, 1933, the daughter of the late Frank and Catherine (Creegan) Seeney, Lou was the devoted and loving wife to Harold J. Nichols, who passed in 2004. Lou grew up in Floral Park, graduating from Sewanhaka High. She attended several colleges throughout her life and had a great love of learning. Her husband’s career in the baking industry saw them living in Princeton, NJ, Buffalo, NY, Kingston, Ontario, and finally Plantsville, CT.

Obituaries

Left behind to mourn Lou’s passing are her children: Tom (Beth), Daniel, David (Margie), Eugene (Nicole), Mary and Kiki. In addition, she leaves 14 grandchildren: Josh, Sarah, Laura, Jessica, Melissa, Luke, Madelyn, Sam, Jane, Kate, Casey, Noah, Timothy and Mary Margaret; 9 greatgrandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

COMMENTARY

Plainville public schools welcome back students

both individual and shared goals.

While moving with little kids was a lot of work, Lou said the people they met along the way and the memories made, were treasures for life.

The mother of seven children and stay-at-home mom, she was involved in church, school and scouting activities. Lou loved to sew and read. She loved to do crafts with the kids and spent many an afternoon baking dozens of chocolate chip cookies to put in their lunch bags. She was the quintessential mom!

Upon retiring, Lou focused on her grandchildren, whom she doted on, and had many laughs with. She volunteered at church and with the Rec dept at Southington Care for many years. Lou stayed up on current events and sports, loved Jeopardy and crossword puzzles. She never met a rubber band or paperclip she didn’t need! She was happiest when in the company of her kids and grandkids.

As her children got older, Lou worked part time. One of her favorite jobs, in the mid 70’s, was as a bookkeeper for a McDonald’s chain in Kingston. Of course, she incorporated her love of children into the job when she asked if she could also organize children’s birthday parties at the restaurant. Her boss loved it and so did the children. Shortly after the family’s move to Plantsville in 1980, Lou took the position of YMCA Latchkey director. It was a job she was born to do, and her maternal instincts served her well. The parents appreciated her, the kids loved her program and the teens loved working for her.

Besides her husband, she is now reunited with her infant son, Timothy Francis; siblings, Paul, Barb and Frank and her son in law, Brian Nugent. The family will be forever grateful to “Mom’s Team”: The Franciscan nurses/ therapists; Dr. James St. Pierre; Dr. Maud Ward and mom’s special neighbors, all of whom took such good care of her, adding years to her life. A final thank you to the entire staff and the residents at “The Orchards” for the kindness shown to our mother while she lived there. She was truly happy there.

Della Vecchia Funeral Home is handling arrangements. A mass of Christian burial was held on September 21, 2022 at 10 AM, at St. Aloysius Church, Plantsville, CT. Burial followed at Oak Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Margaret’s memory can be sent to:

Our Plainville Community Schools team was very excit ed to welcome our students back for the start of our 2022-23 school year. We all returned with high energy and high hopes for a much more normal school year, a year with fewer interruptions and barriers to effective learning, and more of the traditional experiences we want all of our students to enjoy. Despite continued awareness of COVID man agement, and adherence to the State guidance for deal ing with positive cases, we are all back in school and learning in person. This is proven to be the best and most effective way for most students to learn, and the most enjoyable and engag ing way to connect with oth ers as a member of a learn ing community.

Our district theme this year centers around the team concept, and emphasizes the importance of every mem ber of the team doing their very best by setting goals, working hard, and achieving

forth our very best effort to ward our identified goals. This call for doing our best begins with me, as the Su perintendent of Plainville Community Schools, and I am committed to always do ing my best for our schools, for our students, and for our entire staff team. However; I know that my impact is rela tively small, and I need our entire team to work together if we are to achieve the level of success I know we are ca pable of.

During our Strategic Plan ning process last spring, as we were planning and gen erating ideas about who we are, and who we want to be come; we set a visionary goal of becoming THE model school district in Connecti cut. I am convinced that our primary limitation to be coming THE model district is our individual and collec tive belief in the potential we have in Plainville. As a su

perintendent who is out in our schools a lot, I can con firm that we have absolute ly incredible potential to be come that model school dis trict in Connecticut, and that is our aspiration. In many ways, we believe we already serve as a model, and I hope our families and staff would agree on that and can think of a list of reasons why that is true - - in many re spects, it is true through the opportunities provided in academics, in music and the arts, in athletics, in com munity service opportuni ties, in our sense of commu nity and in so many addi tional ways. However, there are areas in which we con tinue to have room for growth, and work to be done.

In my visits to our schools and in the meetings with many grade level groups, I have challenged our stu dents to help us be that model district, by putting forward their very best effort. I told students that first and foremost, we need them in

school, whenever they are able to be in school-- atten dance is critical and founda tional to overall success. If students are sick, we obvi ously want them to stay home and get well, but every day they are able to attend school, they should do so. We want them here, learn ing, growing and sharing positive school experiences with their peers. I also hope that our teachers and staff remain healthy and well so they can be present as much as possible to do the incredi bly important work they do for our district children. I can honestly say that our collective PCS team of staff members is the strongest I have ever worked with. We have a highly talented group of administrators, teachers, specialists, nurses, tutors, paraprofessionals, technolo gy staff, office professionals, maintainers, custodians, monitors and support staff. All of these individuals are in place to teach, assist and support all of our district children to achieve great things and reach their full

potential. In addition to the members of our team men tioned above, we also have a growing security and safety staff. After hiring our Direc tor of School Safety and Se curity, we also hired a new security officer for the Mid dle School of Plainville.

Both of these individuals are trained, retired police offi cers with extensive exper tise in safety and security. Director Marques and I con tinue to work together, along with our Director of Tech nology and his staff, to en sure that all of our sys tems, hardware, cameras, software and building func tions ensure the highest de gree of security possible. We continue to take a number of measures to improve securi ty and safety at each of our district schools. Safety is our top priority, and we have added many resources to maximize everyone’s feel ings of safety and securi ty across the district.

We continue to work with our district Strategic Plan ning Committee to make in

formed decisions about how to invest in our schools and in our future success.

Our next Strategic Planning meeting will occur on Sept. 28, and so much has already been accomplished based on the information we collected from our commu nity through surveys, and through the previous Strate gic Planning component in May. We will continue to build on that momentum, set new goals, and strive to be the best over the year(s) ahead.

We are off to a very positive start to the school year. We have made many school im provements across the dis trict, from playgrounds and resources for students and teachers to infrastructure and technology, and we will continue to do so with avail able resources. Although the request to apply for the Mid dle School of Plainville “ ren ovate like new” grant was voted down by a 4-3 majori ty of the Town Council, we

Bristol Health MedWorks Occupational Health Program Has Strong Impact on Workplace and Employee Health

Bristol Health presented the benefits of partnering with an occupational health office to area business leaders at the Southington Chamber in the Morning Professional Leads & Networking Group on September 14.

Bristol Health MedWorks Occupational Health programs are designed to impact workplace and employee health. Having providers who understand can make a huge difference for your company when performing work environment assessments.

The goal of MedWorks is to be able to give back as much information as possible so the employer has every opportunity to make the work environment as safe as possible. Partnering with MedWorks can help minimize injury and illness rates; assist in maintaining a drug-free environment with routine, pre-employment, or random drug or alcohol testing; ensure your employees are capable enough to perform their essential job functions with annual work-

fit assessments; conduct on-site workplace evaluations to assist in lowering ergonomic injuries – i.e. repetitive motion, strains, etc.; and provide individualized care to meet your need.

Benefits to your employees include performing annual physicals or workfit assessments which can effectively reduce injury and illness rates. Annual health exams can give your employees the proper insight to the changes that are happening inside of them and they can then be set up with the proper specialists to ensure their safety.

Businesses interested in obtaining more information about Bristol Health MedWorks Occupational Health programs should contact Samantha Steinmark, LPN, EMT and Office Manager at 860.589.0114.

For more information on participating in Chamber in the Morning or becoming a guest speaker, call Jordan Clemens at 860.628.8036 Presenter is Leisa Zadrick, MSHA, CPHQ, PMP, LSSGB, Systems Director, Quality and Process Improvement.

will continue to plan for the needed improvements and ongoing needs for keeping MSP operating safely, effi ciently and effectively. This will require the support of our families and community so that we can make the middle school as nice as the other five schools that were already renovated like new. MSP is currently just over 30 years old and in need of sig nificant improvements. We hope our Town Council, families and community members will support our application completion for this June so that we can sub mit the application in the next grant cycle.

In closing, Plainville Com munity Schools each do a great job of serving our chil dren in so many important ways. We are very proud of the wonderful learning op portunities that our schools

provide to our children and families across Plainville.

Still, we must not sit back and accept our status as good enough. We must strive to be great, in every way that schools are measured and compared to other schools.

We must work together to become THE model school district in Connecticut in even more ways than we currently are. We must con tinue to work together as a community to inspire, pre pare and engage students through meaningful learn ing opportunities toward their goals. We are proud to serve Plainville’s children and families, and will con tinue to work as a partner with our families and com munity members as we give our very best along our shared journey to greatness.

Arts group prepares for exhibition featuring Ukrainian women artists

SOUTHINGTON Ukrainian artists will exhibit their cre ations at the Southington Community Cultural Arts center on Main Street next month.

The artists contributing in clude those living in

Ukraine, Israel, Poland and locally.

All the artists are women, many of whom have left their home country follow ing the Russian invasion ear lier this year. Men have been prohibited from leaving the country since the invasion.

Proceeds from the sale of paintings, collages and jew elry will benefit Ukrainian causes and the refugee women and their families.

“We’re just hoping to get these women back up on their feet,” said Diann Thomson, arts center execu tive director.

Jeweler, embroiderer Olga Tsyfanski, an Avon resi dent, and her son Andrew came to the United States in 2008 but still have relatives in Ukraine, including Tsyfan ski’s father. She and her son are making jewelry to sell at the upcoming exhibit to help fund critical supplies and military equipment for sol diers.

Tsyfanski is also learning the traditional embroidery of Ukraine, which includes dif ferent patterns for various regions. Some of her family’s embroidery will be included in the exhibit.

“Ukrainian embroidery is a huge part of our history,” she said last week. “Now we’re

trying to reincarnate it and leave it to our kids.”

Paintings

While some painters are lo cal, Thomson said they’re waiting on works from those overseas. They just received paintings from a Ukrainian now living in Israel and hope to get some from Ukraine itself in time for the showing.

Not all the paintings will be for sale but will highlight the artists and may lead to other work.

“That’s what we’re hoping for, people will commission them, people will support them,” Thomson said.

The exhibit will open on Sept. 6 both online and in person. SoCCA is holding an evening celebration on Sept. 10 that’ll include a Ukrainian chef and Ukrainian speakers.

“We’re hoping that’s a great night,” Thomson said.

The art will remain on dis play for the annual Apple Harvest Festival in late September and early Octo ber.

“We have a lot of foot traffic then. People can walk through and purchase stuff,” Thomson said.

Schools make mental health a priority

While the pandemic has put additional stress on people’s mental health, area school administrators say their dis tricts have always put a fo cus on students’ and staff members’ social and emo tional wellness, even before COVID-19.

“Climate and mental health have been components of our strategic plan for several years, well before COVID,” said Aimee Turner, assistant superintendent for special education for Wallingford schools. “Many of the strate gies and supports in place now were in place prior to COVID. Although we have seen an increase in the number of students strug gling emotionally, the sup port and systems we have had in place continue to be appropriate.”

In 2021, the Centers for Dis ease Control found that “more than a third (37%) of

high school students report ed they experienced poor mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic, and 44% reported they persis tently felt sad or hopeless during the past year.”

“I think since the pandemic, anxiety has been on the rise,” said Jeff Solan, super intendent of Cheshire schools. “There’s a lot of stress and sometimes it's so cial anxiety after coming out of the isolation. I think we’ve certainly seen an increase in anxiety which is why things like physical fitness, being involved physically, a healthy diet, taking care of your body and also your mind supports that. If that is not enough for you, we have other resources as well.”

Solan said in Cheshire’s classrooms there are desig nated periods of time known as “mindful moments.”

“Students are taught how to focus on their breathing, clear their mind, be present

in the moment,” Solan said.

Cheshire school staff are currently participating in a 30-day mental health aware

ness challenge, which began on Sept. 6.

“Employees have access to a special portal for free where

they can participate in week ly webinars on stress man agement, mindfulness and

they also have forums and discussions where they can share suggestions for what is working for them, what their challenges are,” said Adilen Figueroa, a human resources staff member for Cheshire Public Schools.

Cheshire schools also have an on-site health coach for staff members.

Southington

In partnership with Con necticut Behavioral Health, Southington Public Schools was able to develop a dis trict-wide behavior team. Dr. Ryan Loss of Connecticut Behavioral Health is spear heading this project, accord ing to Rebecca Cavallaro, di rector of pupil services for Southington Public Schools.

“He works closely with our district staff and administra tors to look at providing sup

port to school teams and to students who are struggling with either behavioral con cerns or any issues relating to mental health that might impact them during the school day,” Cavallaro said.

The district uses a program called RULER, which is cre ated by the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, to “infuse the principles of emotional intelligence into the immune system of pre-K to 12 schools, informing how leaders lead, teachers teach, students learn and families support students,” according to its website.

“It’s really focusing on the emotional wellbeing of stu dents and staff in the school environment, making sure that we’re checking in on how people are feeling,” Cavallaro siad.

Wallingford

Wallingford elementary schools use a program called Second Step, a “social emo tional curriculum that intro duces children to identifying and managing their emo tions, navigating social situa tions as well as citizenship,” Turner said.

In the upper grade levels, the schools use the program, Sandy Hook Promise.

“This program focuses on students and adults support ing each other to create a safe, violence-free environ ment,” Turner said.

Turner said the district also performs a screening to

identify students who are at risk emotionally and social ly. “For students who require support, the district mental health staff work closely with students and families to identify school and commu nity resources depending on the level of need,” Turner said.

Meriden

Patricia Sullivan-Kowalski,

assistant superintendent of student supports for Meri den Public Schools, said when they look at mental health, they look at the en tire context.

“It’s important to know that we are addressing aca demics, we’re addressing so cial activities and we are ad dressing social-emotional learning as something that we’re teaching, but it’s all to gether,” Sullivan-Kowalski said.

Therefore, when the district looks at kids who are “doing better” after the pandemic, Sullivan-Kowalski said they are looking for students who are “actively participating in things.”

The district hired new em ployees, including school psychologists, social work ers, school counselors and added deans of students at Lincoln Middle School and Edison Middle School that focus on social-emotional

DAMIR CIRIKOVIC SOUTHINGTON SOCCER

Damir Cirikovic scored Southington soccer’s first goal of the 2022 season, a laser into the upper left corner against Farmington. It was harbinger. In the three games that followed, Southington has scored 11 goals and Cirikov ic has been involved in seven. The junior scored twice vs. Simsbury, tallied one goal and set up two others vs. Manchester, then scored again Monday at Platt. Four games into the season, Cirikovic has five goals.

LUCAS CHYMBOR

CHESHIRE FOOTBALL

Introducing Cheshire wide receiver/defensive back Lucas Chymbor. The junior had a break out game at Hillhouse on Friday, picking off a pass in the end zone to end the first half, then opening the second half with a 59-yard touch down reception when he was left undefended on a “go” route. Chymbor caught a second TD pass from QB Matt Jeffery later in the third quarter as the Rams pulled away to a 30-0 win that has them 2-0.

AVERY ROBINSON PLATT FOOTBALL

Yes, the Platt offense resides in Mr. Robin son’s neighborhood. Senior Avery Robinson is back for his second season as Platt’s starting QB and he got the Panthers in the win column Friday by completing 13 of 17 passes for 189 yards and two touchdowns in a 29-22 victory over Bristol Eastern. Robinson also ran for a 12-yard score. On the season, Robinson is 28-for-41 for 464 yards with four passing TDs and two rushing TDs.

SAMANTHA PARK MALONEY CROSS COUNTRY

Samantha Park entered the 2022 cross country season as the reigning Meriden city girls champion. In last week’s season-opening dual meet, the Maloney junior served a re minder that she’ll be the girl to beat when the Meriden squads convene at Hubbard Park on October 11. Last Wednesday at Hubbard, running against Bristol Eastern and Plainville in a CCC South double-dual, Park was first overall with a time of 20:52.

ANNA FEKIETA LYMAN HALL VOLLEYBALL

Anna Fekieta is truly Anna-on-the-spot for Ly man Hall volleyball. She’s a senior captain and she’s so versatile a player that she’s already taken on every position this season save for middle blocker. Deployed at libero for Monday night’s rivalry match against Sheehan, Fekieta delivered 10 digs to anchor the defense. She also factored into the attack with five kills and five aces as the Trojans pulled out a five-set victory.

SARAH BECKERT SHEEHAN VOLLEYBALL

Anna Fekieta’s counterpart on the other side of the net Monday night was Sheehan’s Sarah Beckert. Only a sophomore, Beckert has been Sheehan’s top player this season.
