Builder plans 23 homes for those 55 and older

Kiki’s Kitchen plans expansion

By Jesse Buchanan Record-Journal staff

SOUTHINGTON — A local homebuilder is looking for town approval to construct 23 homes off Meriden-Waterbury Turnpike. Tony Denorfia of AA Denorfia Building and Development wants to build two and three-bedroom homes for those 55 and over. In addition to needing less space, Denorfia said these buyers are also looking to avoid lawn care and other outside maintenance. “There’ll be an association that’ll take care of the outside maintenance,” he said. In April, town planners gave Denorfia approval to rezone the 10-acre property at 570 Meriden-Waterbury Turnpike as an age-restricted cluster housing zone. This allows greater density than normally allowed in residential zones. See Housing, A2

PLAINVILLE — The community will add another restaurant option in early December when Kiki’s Kitchen opens up at 284 Farmington Ave., up the road from the YMCA. The eatery will serve up Mediterranean and Greek food, as well as some Italian favorites.[ Plainville resident Katholiki Georgaras Morin – also known as Kiki – started Kiki’s Kitchen from her home in 2020. Customers would place their orders one day in advance, and Morin would get to work preparing the food in her commercial-size kitchen.

Now he’s looking for town approval to build the development. Denorfia said most of the houses will have two bedrooms. Size will range from 1,400 to 1,800 square feet. Prices have stabilized “a little bit,” Denorfia said, although rising interest rates have had an influence. “Right now, it’s hard to tell. We’re anticipating that they'll be in the high three hundreds to low four hundreds, depending on the market,” he said. “Housing is very market-sensitive. The rates go up, the number of buyers go down.”

Opposition to building The Planning and Zoning Commission hasn’t yet taken

over traffic, emergency services, the loss of undeveloped land and drainage.

Jennifer Tulacro, a Hillcrest Drive resident and neighbor of the planned development, wrote a letter to commission members stating her opposition.

Denorfia said material prices have dropped, though they remain twice as much as before the pandemic. Delivery times have also come down. Denorfia said garage doors were back ordered up to nine months but now can be delivered in a more reasonable six weeks.

“This property is already surrounded on four sides with streets and existing homes making it extremely densely populated as it is. Furthermore, this parcel is an area of green space that is becoming increasingly rare in a town that has seen an unbelievable amount of building that does not seem to end,” Tulacro wrote. Other area residents communicated their concerns

Denorfia said after he builds the development, drainage in the area will improve.

Supply chain relief

Construction won’t begin until next year if the plan is approved by the town. “I’m hoping we should be able to start in the spring,” Denorfia said. jbuchanan@record-journal.com 203-317-2230 Twitter: @JBuchananRJ

up Denorfia’s request to build the development. The vote to approve rezoning the property was 5 to 2. Some area residents also opposed the development, saying they are worried about changes to quality of life.

Lake Compounce has brought on 100 temporary staff members for its fall attractions. “Even if you’re not into haunted houses, I think you can come here and get just the right level of scare that’s appropriate,” General Manager Jeff Davis said. The park partnered with RWS Entertainment on the creative design and construction of the haunted houses. RWS has worked with other amusement parks like Six Flags. The scope of the attractions exceeds any of the park’s previous Halloween offerings, and park owners aim to leave a lasting impression on guests.

New energy, ideas needed in D.C. By Larry Lazor

Southington residents, I’m running as a moderate Republican to represent you in Congress.

My opponent, John Larson, has represented you for 24 years, and although I like him as a person, I have serious doubts about what he has accomplished – and what he seeks to accomplish. I believe it’s time for new energy and ideas, and that no person – no party – has a monopoly on good ideas or policy. In fact, we’d benefit

SOFT TISSUE THERAPY The body’s soft tissues consist of muscles, ligaments, and tendons. When these areas exhibit abnormal tension from poor posture, traumatic injury, or sprain, the pressure produces pain and tenderness. Not just for athletes, soft tissue therapy is for anyone recovering from a soft tissue injury. This tissue therapy is a holistic approach with the aim of relieving pain and inflammation, preventing further damage, reducing spasms, correcting abnormal postures, and improving circulation. A chiropractor will press and knead soft tissue structures using their hands or a mechanical device. This hands-on therapy is a specialized approach that has been used for years. It is common and considered normal for the area to be red and tender after treatment. Chiropractic care is a safe and effective way to find relief for your pain while also improving your overall health and wellness at the same time. It is not just a treatment for body injuries; it’s changing your quality of life. It’s a way to gain better mobility and sleep, to improve your nervous and immune systems, and to enhance every function in your body. Please call 860-6212225 to schedule an appointment. If we are to change the trajectory of where this state is headed, we need to take a cold, hard look at – and be honest about – the policies that have continuously held us back. Returning some of this surplus (by way of a decrease in the income and sales tax) would provide significant long-term tax relief. Permitting policies such as the Truck Tax to go into effect (set for Jan. 1) will only continue to add to this burden, as costs will undoubtedly be passed back onto residents.

Southington rallies, knocks off No. 1 Greenwich Blue Knights overcome 21-0 deficit in thrilling comeback By Ron Buck Special to the Record-Journal

GREENWICH — The Southington football team proved Saturday it’s not how you start.

Evan Anderson’s two-point conversion out of the Wildcat formation with 3:48 to play provided SHS with the winning point. His conversion came after he surprised Greenwich with a 24-yard touchdown pass to John Flynn out of the same formation. The Southington defense then held Greenwich (2-1) one last time. The Blue Knights stopped the Cardinals by inches on fourth down at their own 32, turning the ball back to the offense with 2:35 to play.

Drury, who won back-toback state titles at SHS in 2013 and 2014, had lost his last five games to FCIAC schools, including SHS’s loss to New Canaan in last year’s Class LL postseason. And after falling behind 210, a seventh SHS loss in eight games against the FCIAC seemed inevitable.

But the Blue Knights wouldn’t go away. They scored 14 points in the second quarter, and after entering the final 12 minutes down 28-14, the Blue Knights scored the game’s final 15 points. Anderson, a junior, did it all for the Blue Knights. A twoway starter, SHS’s backup quarterback caught nine passes out of his normal wideout position for 201 yards.

His conversion a few minutes later then gave Southington its only lead of the game. “He had a monster game, but we knew who Evan was,” Drury said. “He’s a great athlete, but a quiet, humble kid. He’s just out there every day, working.” “He had a couple quiet games to start the season, but we were excited to let others see what he can do,” added Drury. “But everyone stepped up and made big plays today.” “I know I have confidence in myself as the backup (quarterback),” Anderson said about his connection with Flynn. “I wasn’t really surprised (we went for two). I knew we were going to get the ball in there. As for being down 21-0? “We knew we just had to pick things up and stop making mistakes,” Anderson said. “We just had to keep pushing.” See Football, A15

It was DiBenetto’s only mistake of the game, as the junior shook off several hard hits in throw for 300 yards on 18-of-41 passing. The Blue Knights appeared to have cut the deficit to 217 with a fake punt. But an offensive pass interference call nullified Anderson’s 38-yard touchdown pass to Owen Hunt. After punting, Southington got the ball right back, however, when Nick Bertola intercepted Wilson and return it to the Greenwich 21. Two plays later, Cardillo scored on a 5-yard TD run to make it 21-7 with 9:05 to play in the first half. The Blue Knights were down 21-0 with less than a minute to play in the first quarter. Wilson connected with James Wailgum on a 60-yard touchdown pass less than three minutes into the game. George Vomvolakis then ripped off a 67-yard run to set Wilson’s second TD pass of the period – a 4-yarder to Charlie Dixon. Greenwich then went up 210 on Jack Konigsberg’s 5yard run with 49 seconds left in the quarter. Southington’s shaky started included a bobbled kickoff return by Kam Beaudoin; two fumbles and a near interception in the first quarter.

Lawyers for Randy Cox, a Black man who was paralyzed from the chest down in June when a police van without seat belts braked suddenly, filed a $100 million lawsuit Tuesday against the city of New Haven. Cox, 36, was being driven to a police station in the city June 19 for processing on a weapons charge when the driver braked hard, apparently to avoid a collision, causing Cox to fly headfirst into the wall of the van, police said. Civil rights attorney Ben Crump said Cox’s legal team is still in talks with the city but filed a federal negligence lawsuit Tuesday in U.S. District Court to make sure Cox is compensated for his suffering. “If we say we respect life and respect Randy Cox’s life experiences and people like Randy Cox, similarly situated, then we have to show that by action, not just by rhetoric,” Crump said. “Not just say we care about Black lives, but we have an actual duty in New Haven and

We can do better; our residents deserve better. We need lawmakers who will fight for the taxpayers. We need lawmakers who put the safety of our citizens and our children first. The residents of Berlin and Southington know I will always prioritize public safety, supporting our law enforcement officers, and fighting on behalf of the taxpayers. You have my promise that I will continue that fight. The last thing Connecticut needs is another representative rubber-stamping harmful policies that have led us to where we are today.

Republican Donna Veach is the state representative from the 30th District in the Connecticut House of Representatives.

EVAN ANDERSON

KATHERINE ARICHAVALA

Evan Anderson can catch passes. He’s shown that since breaking out a year ago as a sophomore and he’s continued in 2022. With a massive game Saturday at Greenwich — 9 catches, 201 yards, 54-yard TD — the junior is 14-for-281 receiving on the season. Anderson can also wing it. The team’s backup QB, Anderson threw a 25-yard TD pass to John Flynn with 3:48 to go, then converted the 2-point try in the 29-28 victory.

The leading girls soccer team so far this season in the Connecticut Technical Conference? The standings show it’s the Wilcox Tech Lady Wildcats. Led by Katherine Arichavala, the ’Cats have scored 24 goals in getting out to a 5-1 start. Arichavala, a junior forward/midfielder, has 11 of those 24 goals, plus three assists. Arichavala had a hat trick against Grasso Tech on Sept. 12 and another one last Friday against Innovation.

ZAKKAI MOORE

EMILY HART

Area football teams turned in two huge wins in the Alliance matchups of Week 3: Southington, 29-28, at Greenwich and Maloney, 21-9, at Darien. Defense sealed it for the Spartans after they took the lead in the second half. Maloney made multiple goal-line stands and forced three turnovers. Zakkai Moore was in the middle of it all. The junior linebacker made 16 tackles, including three for a lost yardage, and picked off a pass.

Emily Hart has been on the varsity scene at Platt since her freshman days and her final year is shaping up like a fine culminating act. The senior setter led the Panthers to a 3-0 sweep of Maloney on Monday. With the rivalry win Platt improved to 7-1, which tied for second-best record in the CCC. Hart had 11 assists and six aces vs. Maloney. On the season, she has 140 assists, 44 aces and 57 digs. All are team highs.

MORGAN STONE

AVERY MOLA

We’re racking our brains and drawing blanks — unlike Morgan Stone. The Lyman Hall senior midfielder scored five straight goals Wednesday to lift the Trojans to a 7-5 victory over East Haven. When was the last time a player scored five goals in one game, let alone five straight? With LH down 4-0 after 15 minutes, Stone cut the gap to 4-2 by halftime, then scored three times in the first 20 minutes of the second to put LH ahead.

Re-introducing SCC Volleyball Player of the Year Avery Mola, though the formality probably isn’t necessary. The senior outside hitter has driven CHS to another strong start with the sort of play that made her All-State last season. Mola had 21 kills against Bristol Central, 22 against Fairfield Warde — far and away the area’s single-match highs so far. Mola and the Rams were 5-1 heading into Tuesday’s showdown with Amity.

Gray, who was also Black, died in 2015 after he suffered a spinal injury while handcuffed and shackled in a city police van. Five officers were placed on administrative leave in Cox’s case. New Haven officials announced a series of police reforms this summer stemming from the case, including eliminating the use of police vans for most prisoner transports and using marked police vehicles instead. They also require officers to immediately call for an ambulance to respond to their location if the prisoner requests or appears to need medical aid.
