Platform: I am running as a 3rd generation Morelli in the town of Southington. I raised my children here and I love this community. I want to see the character of Southington remain as inviting and warm as it always has been. How do we do that? By preserving open space, supporting a superior education system, backing the police and all public safety and first responders. At the same time with fiscal responsibility and reasonable tax levels. By treating everyone fairly. And by careful and thoughtful planning. Listen first and acting appropriately.
Other: I am proud of my service on the Council and hope to continue to give back to the community I love. I hold myself to high standards and I realize the importance of being dedicated, open, honest, inclusive, respectful, and compassionate for others. I advocate for what is in the best interest of our entire community. Contact: cpalmieri@southington.org; 860-628-4115; Facebook: Chris Palmieri

will be paid off in the next few years. Spending money on the library wouldn’t significantly increase what the town spends on debt service, which is currently $12 million per year.
15 North Liberty Street, Southington
The town just completed a sewer upgrade that cost Southington nearly $40 million. The project was completed early and under budget by $6 million, Morrison said, showing that town officials can manage large projects. “I just don’t want to see people vote based on fiscal or capability or, ‘Can you do it’ issues,” he said. “I think we’ve taken care of those as a town.”

Shaun Slight, a Democratic candidate for the finance board, said he’s heard the objection that libraries are becoming obsolete with so many books available online. “It’s not just books, there’s a ton of different resources,” he said. “It’s a meeting spot for the whole community.”
Sunday Football SPECIALS $3 Chili Dogs & Hamburgers
Slight, a mortgage originator, is hosting a library talk in November about building and maintaining credit. Slight said he’s often at the library and saw the need for a larger building. He’s seen opponents argue that the $17 million would be better spent rebuilding aging school buildings. Slight called that a false dichotomy since the town would be able to fund both projects in upcoming years.
Vote Yes campaign Joanne Kelleher, a library board Democrat, helped form the political action committee that’s funding the Vote Yes effort. If undertaken by the Friends of the Library, such lobbying could endanger that group’s nonprofit status. “Vote Yes” planned for a mailer reminding likely voters about the referendum. Kelleher was “cautiously optimistic” that a majority of residents will support the new library but said the vote could still fail if too many people stay home on Nov. 2.

Southington Catholic
Letters to the Editor
Grades pre-K3 through Grade 8
New library needed
Open House November 2, 2021 9:00am - 11:00am
Editor : The mission of the Early Childhood Collaborative of Southington is that all children are healthy and ready to learn. We do that through education, referrals, and advocacy. The ECCS Board approved advocating for a new Southington Public Library building because libraries are a key educational resource for families. The current children’s department is too small, the books are shelved too high, there are no bathrooms nearby, and there isn’t enough space or seating for programs, learning and play.
RegistRation is noW oPen! Contact us at: 860.628.2485 or www.southingtoncatholicschool.org
Accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Southington Catholic offers a challenging curriculum in a safe, nurturing environment. Southington students are provided bus transportation and follow the vacation and holiday schedule determined by the Southington Board of Education. An affordable After-Care Program is offered to families on a flexible schedule.
Academic Excellence • SuperKidsReading Program develops early literacy in a creative interactive format • Foreign language (Spanish) is taught pre-k through grade 8. • Small class size and resource support services enable every student to achieve personal success. • Creative writing encourages self expression and effective communication skills.
Please join us in voting “yes” on Election Day for a new library that will meet the needs of Southington’s young families.
- Middle school curriculum encompasses advanced math classes, hands-on science program, leadership opportunities and exposure to concepts of social justice and service to others. - Challenging curriculum prepares students for advance placement in honors classes in high school - Graduates rewarded with academic scholarships in private high schools
Mr. Messina, Principal of Southington Catholic School will greet visiting families and introduce them to the Southington Catholic School, while providing information on the curriculum for Pre-K children through grade 8 students. Specifics on the After-Care Program and the Academic Program will also be available to families. Southington Catholic is the fulfillment of the vision of Saint Dominic Parish and Saint Thomas Parish in Southington. For many pregnant women, aches and pains in the lower back and hips are part of the experience. During pregnancy, several physiological and endocrinological changes occur. These changes can do quite a number on the spine, causing it to misalign. Chiropractors are trained to work with pregnant women, making relief only a chiropractic visit away. Regular chiropractic adjustments can help relieve the pain and postural problems that occur due to a heavier belly. Some women may unintentionally curve their backs as their babies become heavier and larger, throwing their spine out of alignment. Chiropractic care may also reduce nausea, one of the most common pregnancy symptoms, by realigning the spine and improving overall nervous system function.

ANGEL ARCE
KENNEDY PARKER
If there were any questions about Angel Arce’s game this season — namely, “Is there something wrong?” —they were dispelled Friday night when the senior quarterback threw for five touchdowns in Maloney’s 42-13 rout of Xavier. Arce completed 15 of 18 passes for 230 yards, with the five TD strikes going to four different receivers. Arce now has thrown for 718 yards and 11 TDs on the season.
The Wilcox Tech volleyball team simply caught fire through the middle of the season, winning eight straight before Goodwin Tech, with its own 15-game streak, ended the run Friday. Still, the Indians, at 11-6, are players in the CTC with the likes of Kennedy Parker. The senior notched 16 kills in matches last week vs. Norwich Tech, Windham Tech and Goodwin, and put down 11 aces en route to 35 service points.
VITO CHURCH
RILEE REUTENAUER
In his junior season of varsity football, Platt’s Vito Church is establishing himself as a sure-handed possession receiver. In Platt’s first five games, Church was targeted 21 times and made 19 catches. Then came Friday night in Weston. Church hauled in game-tying TD and conversion passes from QB Avery Robinson. The two connected once more on the two-point try in overtime that won the game, 22-21.
It’s easy to root for Rilee Reutenauer. Sheehan’s second-year starting goalie is having a solid sophomore season, with a 2.00 goalsagainst average forged against a slate that includes the top teams in the SCC. Reutenauer had 22 saves against reigning SCC champ Guilford and another 15 in a 1-0 loss to Hand. Last Thursday, Reutenauer shut out Lyman Hall for the second time this season in a 4-0 Sheehan victory.
JAVON THOMAS
SHAKIRA VILLANEUVA
Javon Thomas had a career night — so far — when he rolled up 185 yards and four touchdowns on 16 carries in Southington’s 42-6 win Friday over Manchester at Fontana Field. A pair of 1-yard TDs were the bookends of the victory. In between, the 6-foot, 200-pound senior broke free for a 60-yard score and powered another handoff home from 11 yards out. For the season, Thomas has 441 yards and 6 TDs.
With the postseason fast approaching, the Lyman Hall volleyball team is getting hot at the right time. Last week, the Trojans knocked off 14-3 North Haven and 13-4 Branford to improve to 10-9, and they were led by their setter, Shakira Villaneuva. The senior passed around 37 assists in Wednesday’s 3-2 win over North Haven and 28 in Friday’s 3-1 triumph over Branford. The 37 sets are Villaneuva’s season high.

Victoria Triano, a Republican incumbent and council chairwoman, said the council passed a resolution requesting legal change and has repeatedly sent it to state leaders.
“Our taxes have been low… because of economic development and businesses coming into town,” Morelli said. Kristen Guida, a Democratic candidate, said it was important to maintain the town’s rainy day fund while also holding the line on spending.
“This Town Council wrote a resolution that went to Hartford, to the office of the governor and every single legislator, condemning these new laws that tie the hands of the police department,” she said.
“I think it would be prudent to continue to build on the rainy day fund,” she said. “Who would have ever predicted we would have been in a pandemic?”
Val DePaolo, a Democratic incumbent, voted against the resolution earlier this year. She said action rather than words were needed to improve public safety. She supported bringing on two more police officers, a measure rejected by council Republicans earlier this year.
Chris Palmieri, a Democratic incumbent and council minority leader, said partnerships with state and area groups were important to improving traffic in town. A public transportation system could also create another viable transportation option.
“A piece of paper, a resolution doesn’t do it. Action does it,” DePaolo said. Christina Volpe, a Democrat running for the council, said more police would have helped deter crime.
Development, traffic
“That may also help to mitigate some of the traffic congestion in town,” Palmieri said. Tom Lombardi, a Republican incumbent and council vice
chairman, said the council has preserved more opens pace land over the past two years than he could remember while on the council. That helps prevent potential overdevelopment, which is also a sign of the town’s strength. “Overdevelopment, too much traffic, those are all things that happen when your town is thriving,” he said. “People and businesses want to come to this town.”
Library future Kelly Leppard, a Democratic candidate, said she supported the upcoming referendum on a $17 million plan to replace the library. “I think it’s a great investment,” she said.

“The biggest hurdle I’ve heard at the doors is that (seniors) feel they’re being pushed out of the town they grew up in,” Perry said.
CONNECT WITH US SOCIALLY
Paul Chaplinsky, a Republican incumbent, said the council for the last two years has kept taxes level. “We’ve passed zero percent mill rate increases recently. We need more of that going forward to support seniors,” Chaplinsky said.
Francis Paquet P A I N T I N G
“As a town, you’re supposed to provide resources to your residents,” he said.

Taxes
GROW YOUR BUSINESS
Jack Perry, a Democratic candidate, said he’s heard from senior citizens worried about paying their taxes. He said the issue should be a priority for councilors.
Bill Dziedzic, a Republican incumbent, also supported a new library. He said what the library offers has to be considered in the context of other services, such as programs at the senior center.
“We need a safer community,” she said. “The only way I feel we can do that is with more officers present in our town.” Jim Morelli, a Republican incumbent, said the town has been well-handled financially in the past two years. Town leaders have also worked to bring in more businesses that help reduce the tax burden on homeowners.

JACK PERRY FOR TOWN COUNCIL
I graduated from Southington High School in 2008 and started my own small business, HQ Dumpsters & Recycling, that same year. I attribute my success to the support of our community over the years. It has been my pleasure to be involved and give back to the community that has been so great to me. Now, I’m running for Town Council to continue my — Jack Perry service to Southington.” Address public safety challenges Reduce burdensome regulations Manage our Town’s finances responsibly
