Southington library director resigns By Jesse Buchanan Record-Journal staff

Southington Public Library Director Kristi Sadowski has resigned, citing health concerns. She leaves the position as town leaders debate how best to build a library for the $17 million voters approved at referendum last year.

Sadowski was hired in 2018, taking the place of Sue Smayda. Sadowski was the director of Coventry’s library for eight years before taking the Southington position. In addition to the library, she heads the Barnes Museum as well. Sadowski notified town officials of her resignation by email Oct. 24, citing the need to “prioritize her health and well being.”

Sadowski’s last day was Oct. 26. “I am very proud of the work I have done over the past four years and the trajectory in which both the Southington Public Library and Barnes Museum are headed,” Sadowski wrote. “I wish you and the future of both organizations nothing but the best of luck.”

Wheeler Clinic received a $5,000 grant from Main Street Community Foundation to expand its outpatient clinic for LGBTQ+ people. Called Walk with Me, the program provides primary care, behavioral health care and peer support for all queer Connecticut residents and their families. “We’re able to… provide patients, their parents, their caregivers, guid-

Tina Riccio, library board chairwoman, said it’s a busy time for the library, the director in particular. “She has been out a lot for some medical reasons,” Riccio said. “I think it just became too much with the demand of this situation … I think she just decided to put her health first.”

Concern about inflation and rising costs top the list of voter worries for the Republican incumbent in the 16th state Senate district and his Democratic challenger. Rob Sampson, a Senate Republican from Wolcott, is running for reelection and has held the seat since 2018. Chris Robertson, a Democrat from SouthingNicole Heady poses in front of the progress pride flag at the Wheeler ton, is challenging Sampson for the Family Health & Wellness Center at 91 Northwest Drive in Plainville on Senate seat. The district includes Oct. 14. Heady is the peer support specialist for Walk With Me at Cheshire, Prospect, Southington, WaJeffrey Jolly, CFP® 203.407.8188 Wheeler. Jim Morelli, a Town Council Republican and library building committee chairman, said Sadowski was instrumental in guiding the design and requirements of the new library. It’s fortunate that much of that work is completed, he said, although the library director is still an important role in the project. “She was very instrumental in the initial planning in the initial layout, space sizes, the ratio of adult book space to children’s book space,” Morelli said. “All of that is fairly locked down now.”

This summer, Sadowski took a medical leave. She came back right around the time that assistant library director Sandy DiCicco went out on maternity leave. With both the director and assistant director out, Town Manager Mark Sciota is taking up some of the administrative duties of the library and Barnes Museum. Riccio said Sadowski’s resignation is unexpected and that she’s hoping to fill the position quickly. This week the library board will review the job description and post the position soon. “I hope we get a lot of applications,” she said. “I don’t know how hard it’s going to be to find a library director.”

Morelli and the building committee have been working with architects to make sure the town can build a 24,000-square-foot building for $17 million. It will mean

the library won’t have all the “bells and whistles” that they’d like, but Morelli said some of those things could be added later.

$129.99

“We’re trying to make sure we get everything in place,” he said. “We went through a bumpy road with people angry, but I think in the end this will be a really great thing.” Riccio started on the library building committee during the pandemic. She described Sadowski as accepting of everyone. Sadowski also worked well with community groups. “She wanted the library to be an inclusive place,” Riccio said.

Inflation worries Both candidates say residents want state leaders to help address rising costs.

15 North Liberty Street, Southington

“It’s kind of heartbreaking. There’s a lot of elderly people out there, single moms out there, families out there, hurting out there with the price of gas, the price of food, the price of oil,” Robertson said. “This is the first year where I think a lot of families are really, really concerned with the next few years.”

Much of the problem, Robertson said, is global and not confined to Connecticut or the United States. He said state and federal leaders need to encourage domestic oil production to help address energy costs. The state also should fund programs that help needy residents.

ally need the help out there and really make sure that the people who need the help get the help,” Robertson said. “We just can’t give money away. We have to look at the next five years and see where that money is best spent.” Sampson said he’s been opposing the policies that have increased energy and other living costs for Connecticut residents. Undoing those policies and mandates that drive up costs would be a start. “I am proud to say that I have never voted on legislation that would have raised the cost of living for anyone,” Sampson said. “The state keeps getting bigger and bigger ... It needs to go in the other direction.” Policies such as the $15 minimum wage banned workers from taking jobs that paid less, Sampson said, just one of the laws that have reSee 16th Senate seat, A7

duced competition. State leaders should start “restoring competition in the marketplace and reducing government regulation that is driving up costs and simply get rid of taxes,” he said. Another way to help residents would be the state’s budget surplus. “They need to return that surplus back to the taxpayers,” Sampson said. “That money would be far better suited in the hands of my constituents than in a bank account in Hartford.”

Rent commissions Robertson and Sampson differed about the creation of fair rent commissions. The General Assembly mandated that towns and cities with at least 25,000 residents create such commissions by July 2023 and gave municipalities the option of allowing those commissions to order land-

lords to lower rents or reduce rent increases. Sampson opposed the legislation, saying it interfered with the market, was a form of rent control and would lead to further rental shortages. A commission with the powers to subpoena and fine shouldn’t be injecting itself into rental agreements. “Landlord-tenant agreements are private contracts and they should be,” Sampson said. “I believe that tenants need to be protected from unscrupulous landlords all day long, but they don’t need to be protected from themselves. “The Democrats believe in control and they are forever trying to put controls in place and those things disrupt production. Production is the way to drive costs down,” Sampson said. Robertson said the elderly in particular are concerned

about rising housing costs since many are on a fixed income. He supported the creation of fair rent commissions. “It safeguards the elderly,” he said. “The elderly are on fixed incomes. We have to be very fair that we’re not pushing elderly people out of their housing.” Robertson said he wanted to hold Sampson “accountable” for his opposition votes in the legislature. “The one thing I’m doing differently is that I’m going out there and holding him accountable for a lot of his ‘no’ votes,” Robertson said. “People don’t hold politicians accountable for their actions.”

Platforms, party affiliation Sampson said his voting record is consistent with his principles, which at times means he takes positions different even than other Republicans. “I do the right thing every time. I can answer any question and defend my vote.

They’re based on principle,” he said. Sampson questioned Robertson’s political affiliation, which has included the Democratic and the Working Families parties and an attempt to run on the local Southington Republican ticket for Board of Finance. In 2014, Robertson ran on the Working Families ballot line for the 16th Senate seat since the Democratic nomination was closed by the time he joined the race. He lost to former senator Joe Markley, a Republican who held the 16th Senate seat for several terms. Last year, he switched his affiliation to Republican hoping to run for the Board of Finance. He tried to get on the ballot as an unaffiliated candidate but didn’t get enough signatures by the deadline. “It tells me he wants to get elected anyway, anyhow,” Sampson said of Robertson’s party affiliations.

A7

Democrat for all but about 90 days of his life. While he ran on the Working Families Party line, he remained a Democrat and ran with the support of Democrats. He switched to the Republican Party due only to disagreement with the local Democratic party leadership at the time. He left the Republican party, which he said was too extreme for him. “I only switched parties one time and that was for a very short time,” Robertson said. jbuchanan@record-journal.com

police say was being held on $1 million bond for an unrelated charge.

Perez is a previously convicted felon and has a prior history of being uncooperative with police. His connection to the victim remains unknown, and neither have any suspected ties to the Southington area.

The medical examiner ruled Principe’s death a homicide after discovering a bullet wound in his torso, which is presumed to have been what caused the crash. Officers investigating on scene found Perez nearby and asked him questions about what happened. He gave them a false name and was uncooperative, according to police. He was arrested on charges of interfering with officers and criminal possession of a firearm. Perez had a pistol and a shell casing in his pocket at the time of the arrest. He was held on $750,000 bond and was arraigned, posted bond, and was released. He’s since been taken back into custody. At the time of his arrest on the murder charge,

Earlier in the evening there was a reported altercation at the Cumberland Farms convenience store north of where the crash occurred, though it remains unconfirmed if it has any connection to the incident. Authorities are still investigating. The incident is Southington’s first reported homicide in six years, according to police. Authorities are still asking members of the public to come forward with any potential information to aid in their investigation by calling the Southington Police Department at 860-621-0101.

TEACHER COUNCILOR INDEPENDENT THINKER As an educator, former Southington Town Councilor, father, and lifelong Southington resident, Chris Poulos has dedicated his life to helping others. Throughout his lifetime of service, Chris has always taken a common-sense approach that has yielded results for the people he’s served. As a Town Councilor, this meant Chris advocated for budgets to put students and taxpayers first, supported seniors, expanded open space in Southington and addressed car thefts on a bipartisan basis. If elected, Chris will: Collaborate with Independents, Republicans, and Democrats to ensure that the uptick in crime results in severe and swift consequences for those who break the law in our communities; Work to provide substantial tax relief for Connecticut residents and businesses dealing with the impact of inflation and the pandemic; Ensure Southington gets its fair share in state education funding to help invest in our students while holding the line on our local taxes; Advocate for local control of our zoning regulations with a continued focus on the preservation of open space; Provide meaningful support to seniors to allow them to stay in their homes.

One thing that I pride myself on is being an independent thinker. Ask anyone who knows me or has worked with me. I don’t vote according to ideology. To me, good policy is good politics. Voting solely along ideological lines often means missing the mark on key opportunities that can help people, towns, businesses and the state as a whole. I would also suggest that “where we are today” in Connecticut is much better than what the doomsayers might say. Whether we’re Democrats, Republicans or unaffiliated,

it’s important to note Connecticut’s progress – progress we all now share and should be proud of, while being mindful that there’s more work to be done. Connecticut is running a surplus of $4 billion. That’s not a result of inflation, that’s in spite of it. That’s not on the backs of workers, that’s working together with labor. That’s not a burden but a blessing. It means covering future costs such as pension funding, setting the stage for a more prosperous tomorrow. Connecticut is currently enjoying a gas tax holiday, one that a few vocal legislators opposed because “it’s temporary.” See McNair, A16

Library challenges The beleaguered project to build a new public library in Southington has experienced another setback with the resignation of Kristi Sadowski, the library’s director. The first observation that needs to be made is that Sadowski is wise to be making a priority of her health and well-being, which she mentioned in her resignation letter. That’s the most

important consideration. While much of Sadowski’s work in the design and requirements of the new library have been completed, the leadership role remains important, noted Jim Morelli, chairman of the Town Council’s library building committee. See Editorial, A14

McNair From A10

I would suggest the standard for good policy should not be its duration but its need and effectiveness. Connecticut needed a gas tax holiday, and it has been effective in helping families. We talk about the importance of public safety. CT has experienced a reduction in crime. That's borne out in statistical facts that challenge the doomsayers. Public safety in the form of police and firefighters has a fiscal cost, a cost that public safety advocates often forget. Should we seek to cut our taxes to spite our safety? Absolutely not.

back, all while performing the core mission of government. That mission is public service – providing what residents need and want in good times and bad. CT isn't without its defects, but its positives outweigh the negatives. Nothing is perfect and feedback is always welcome. But we need to offer constructive criticism without couching ourselves in ideology, and we must beware of anyone painting with erasers instead of the sharp brush of positive action. We deserve leaders representing the best of ourselves, not the worst. I promise you this: at the end of the day, I'll return that phone call looking for help with elder care, mental health care, or simply looking for guidance, and have a meaningful conversation about what you need, and provide answers.

We deserve leaders who don't make it their mission to bad mouth Connecticut but instead strive to build it up. ford, Jessica Arnold, said that the behavioral team comprises two clinicians and two peer-support specialists. She said that the behavioral clinicians are trained in trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy and EMDR — eye movement, desensitization and reprocessing. Arnold explained that these therapy models are popular, evidence-supported practices. In addition, Arnold said that all staff, including the front desk and janitorial staff, were intensively trained in providing gender-affirming care. “Feeling comfortable when you walk into a [medical appointment] that maybe you’ve done so many times before and in just complete and utter fear and being able to provide a safe space for clients should be the norm,” she said. Trocchi explained that peersupport specialists are not medical providers. Instead, LGBTQ+ identifying people with lived experience help clients manage day-to-day needs and provide extra support. In addition, their community ties allow the specialist to build a deeper connection with their clients. She said that the specialists’ support is not a billable service, so the grant will be used to expand their services further and hire more staff. The peer-support specialist “really serves as a mentor, as a peer, as someone who’s gone through and has lived experience and is critical in making the connections to ensure that the patients are following up, receiving the services and engaged in the care that they need,” Trocchi said. Arnold estimated that Walk with Me currently serves 120 clients across the entire program. Trocchi added that the program does not have a waitlist.

“I wanted to share my experience and be able to help others through what I’ve already been through,” Heady said.

“Our clinicians are wonderful at navigating that really difficult transition for parents as well as clients. Whether it be the client is just exploring, the client is curious, the client is questioning, the client is angry about what they’re going through, so allowing that younger client to go through those emotions in that experience with the clinician until the client is ready.”

Heady wears many hats as a peer-support specialist. They host and attend programwide events, help clients with non-medical needs, host numerous support groups and work with a client’s designated support systems, such as family or friends.

ELECTION 2022 / COMMENTARY

Poulos: Integrity and civility matter state level elections. I told them NO, and that I wanted to talk to everyone who voted in the 2020 presidential election. I argued that we are in unprecedented times, and for me it was critical to get a pulse on what all people living in the 81st district think.

By Chris Poulos

number of deep blue Democrats, and I’ve knocked on the doors of many deep red Republicans. However, the most people that I've talked to are the ones in the middle. When these folks come to the door, I introduce myself, ask if they have any questions about my campaign, and inquire about issues that keep them up at night. In almost every case they answer with something to the effect of: Chris, I’m tired … enough is enough with the polarization.

When I hear this frustration, I typically respond by talking about my moderate and common-sense Town Council record. I share how on the council I voted for what I thought was best and right for Southington, not the party line. And then, with my approach to governing in mind, I share my platform :

I encourage my future constituents to “Imagine a state representative that will go to Hartford and be tough on crime, while advocating for

I add, “Imagine someone who wants to ensure we have an adequate housing inventory in our town and at the same time insists that zoning decisions are kept at the local level.”

I say, “Imagine a state rep who advocates for tax relief for small businesses, but at the same time works to extend the child tax credit, so young families can go out and support those very same businesses.”

And then education comes up. As a teacher, I know a little bit about issues impacting our schools… and I ask them to, “Imagine someone in Hartford who will fight for Southington to get its fair share of education funding in order to hold the line on our local taxes… and someone who can explain to legislators the implications of their votes on teachers, students and families.” And I ask our older residents to, “Imagine someone who has and will continue to advocate for what's best for Southington seniors, the disabled population, and veterans.” I’ll be honest … I know, governing from the middle means I'm going to make many votes in Hartford that you are going to agree with, but also there’s going to be some that may frustrate you. Either way, I give my word: I will always do what is best and what is right for Southington. I promise to lead with integrity and civility in everything I do on behalf of our great town.
