bury in an All-CCC Class LL girls soccer final in front of a big crowd at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
By Sean Krofssik Record-Journal staff
NEW BRITAIN — The Southington girls soccer team walked off the field Saturday afternoon exhausted. The Blue Knights had Tomahawks 1 given everything Blue Knights 0 they had for 80 minutes on the biggest stage of high school sports. The top-seeded Blue Knights fell just short of their ultimate goal: a state championship. Southington was edged out 1-0 by No. 3 Glaston-
Samantha Forrest provided the lone goal of the contest. The junior converted with 5:38 remaining in regulation. The play was set up by a perfect through-ball from fellow Mackenzie Baker. See Soccer, A12

WWII veteran survived close call with torpedo By Jesse Buchanan Record-Journal staff
SOUTHINGTON — Anthony Rosenthal was just a few feet from the Japanese torpedo that had penetrated the hull of his ship, landing in the machine room of the USS Wichita where the New Britain native served as a machinist during World War II. The torpedo failed to detonate. “I wouldn’t be here today if the wrong thing happened to me,” said Rosenthal, 97. The Navy veteran was presented with medals from his service in the Pacific theater during a ceremony Nov.

She’s been working since June to get them. “He’s a proud veteran and I just had to do this for him,” Memery said. U.S. Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro helped get the medals. A representative from her office presented the medals to Rosenthal on Thursday. They included the combat action ribbon, the See Veteran, A4

Torpedo incident The heavy cruiser USS Wichita started in the European theater before moving to the Pacific. The torpedo incident is documented by the Naval History and Heritage Command, which dates it to 1943. Japanese bombers attacked the Wichita and an accompanying cruiser, the USS Chicago during a nighttime raid off Rennell Island. The Chicago took two torpedo hits and was sunk by another raid the day after.
Rosenthal returned to New Britain after the war and lived there until moving in with his daughter Memery who lives in Wallingford. Rosenthal spends his days at Livewell in Plantsville, formerly the Alzheimer’s Resource Center. Several of Rosenthal’s caregivers spoke about his kindness and charisma during Thursday’s ceremony. His grandson, Mason Memery, read an essay he’d written about his grandfather. “He’s 97 and still has the heart of a brave soldier and that’ll never change,” Mason Memery said.

call last summer to young artists from her representative district communities, Cheshire, Wallingford and Southington.
Along with unveiling the new display, the artists and their families also received a private tour of the capital. Bethany Melnick said her family will ”never for get the experience,” including the tour. “It was a special day,” she said.
“Now that I’m chair of the Children’s Committee, what better way to remember the children I serve?” Linehan said, adding that she plans to hold the contest annually. “I will continue to do it for as long as I’m in office,” Linehan said. “Supporting the arts is so important for the development of our kids.” Earlier this month, proud parents watched as their children helped Linehan pull down the curtain, unveiling the new display.
Staci Miller, of Cheshire, was another parent who proudly watched as her daughter Delaini joined her peers unveiling a watercolor painting depicting a rose in purple and blue hues
State Rep. Liz Linehan recently held a contest to fill her Children’s Committee office wall with artwork. Winning artists are, from left: Nina Chang, of Cheshire; Alex Gelda, of Plantsville; Brooke Melnick, of Southington; Natalie “It was quite the honor,” Jambor, of Wallingford; and Delaini Miller, of Cheshire. Staci Miller said Delaini has always been creative, describing visual arts as a passion of her daughter’s that she began cultivating in Kindergarten. The medium — whether it involves paint, scissors, glitter, cardboard or other materials — doesn’t matter. “Art really lets Delaini be herself,” Staci Miller said. Impressionistic watercolor painting, in particular, is something she said her daughter has “developed on her own.” “It has become one of her signature styles. And she’s 10 years old,” Staci Miller said. Other local artists whose artwork now hang in Hartford include Natalie Jambor, of Wallingford, Alex Gelda, of Plantsville, Sara Flynn, of Southington, and Nina Chang, of Cheshire.

Overlooked candidate Editor : Marianne Williamson is an overlooked presidential candidate. It’s clear that our country is in need of deep moral repair on many levels. School shootings, pollution of our planet, hungry children, corporate gains valued over human welfare, etc. We need a leader who will be the moral authority to help this country and its people to heal.

Take some time to watch her speak on any of her YouTube videos, or read her books, A Politics of Love or A Return to Love. Her vision gives immediate hope and peace in my heart – and I’m sure it will do the same to anyone else who will give her the chance.

When Marianne Williamson speaks, her words resonate with hope unlike no other. She comes from a place of love on how to address all issues and you can’t help but feel a shift in perspective in how we actually can heal this country and planet. If we continue to elect candidates that lead from a place of fear, we can be sure that things will only get worse.

Forrest took two dribbles and blasted it in. “She’s been doing that since she joined our program last year,” Glastonbury coach Joe Finocchiaro said. “She loves the pressure. She’s our No. 5 penalty kicker. She just loves that pressure.” Prior to the goal, Southington junior keeper Emily Eigo made two diving saves on a pair of one-on-one opportunities. Both were against Forrest. “My heart was racing,” Eigo said. “It was great. I know it was a great experience. I know we are going to be back next year.” Forrest’s goal was the first that Southington had allowed in the playoffs and in

Following the Glastonbury goal, Southington didn’t threaten in the final five minutes, enabling the Tomahawks to celebrate their first state title since 2016, when they capped off a three-year run atop Class LL. “It was a tough fight,” Southington senior captain and midfielder Emma Panarella said. “I don’t think that was our best game we played all season. “Congrats to them. They worked for it and are a good team. We could have been better. We could have had it.” Saturday’s title was the fifth in program history for the Tomahawks (18-1-1), who won their first in 2011 prior
to the dynasty run of 201416. It was their 12th trip to the state finals. Only two current players were on that 2016 state title team — senior captains Sophia Desaulniers and Chloe Landers. Desaulniers started. Landers, who is headed to UConn to play soccer, didn’t see any time as a freshman. “The seniors have had a bit of a roller coaster in the last couple of years,” said Finocchiaro. “To finish it off like this is just an amazing feeling.” Southington handed the Tomahawks their lone setback of the season on Oct. 18. The Blue Knights won that day at Fontana Field, 30. “Forrest didn’t play and we had a couple of injuries.” Finocchiaro said of the first meeting. “We had kids all over in different positions and a different formation. We kind of used that game as a stepping stone. If you go back and look we scored 30 goals in our first 11 games and we finished with 25 goals in our last five games.” Actually, it was 27 goals for the Tomahawks in their last five regular-season games. Then came seven more in the state tournament, none bigger than Forrest’s strike with 5:38 to play. Southington’s season ends at 17-1-2. This was the Blue Knights first state title appearance since they shared the Class LL title with Fairfield in 2002. “I think this is a step forward,” Linehan said. “Yeah, it’s disappointing.
