Dem wants probe into campaign donations By Jesse Buchanan Record-Journal staff

A Town Council Democrat wants a state elections investigation and outside legal advice on campaign donations from four people connected to a local developer before taking action on the developer’s sewer extension request.

Business owner and developer Frank Fragola wants the council to approve a sewer extension to connect his proposed 31-unit housing subdivision to town sewer and water. His attorney Bryan Meccariello was scheduled to give a presentation to the council on the plan Monday night.

Democrats, who had a majority, opposed Fragola’s plan earlier this year despite Republican support for it. With November’s Republican victory, the GOP took six of the nine council seats. The Republican Town Committee received four $2,000 donations in October from three employees of

Fragola and one man engaged to an employee of Fragola. Two of the four donors didn’t vote in November and none had donated to local political parties in recent years. For two of the donors, occupation and employer information required See Donations, A4

YMCA AWARDS

By Devin Leith-Yessian Record-Journal staff

Shopping among some of the tallest fir trees outside Engine Company 2, Gabby Acquaviva, 7, helped her father Dean Acquaviva pick out just the right ones. “We have a blast, we do it every year,” Dean Acquaviva said while firefighters trimmed one of the two trees they picked out Sunday.

Mark Pooler, executive director of the Southington-Cheshire YMCA, left, congratulates Brian Goralski on Monday after announcing him as the YMCA's 2020 Person of the Year at the Southington Community YMCA.

Sgt. Brian Leppard, left, and Officer Chad Butler, of the Southington Police Dept., were announced as recipients of the Youth Development award during a ceremony at the Southington Community YMCA. The award is presented to an individual or group who have worked to nurture the potential of youth and/or teens. Both will be recognized during the YMCA’s 91st annual awards ceremony on Wednesday Feb. 5. Photos by Dave Zajac, Record-Journal

Gabby Acquaviva said her favorite part of picking out a tree is bringing it home to decorate. Firefighter Cecilio Feliciano said helping families pick out a tree makes all the work they do setting up the fundraiser worthwhile. See Tree sale, A2
