Marijuana moratorium could be extended Town Times
Connecticut lawmakers voted in favor of wide-ranging cannabis legalization last summer, laying the groundwork for a new, legal cannabis industry in the state. Since then, cities and towns have discussed whether they wish to welcome marijuana businesses in their communities. Such enterprises may be up and running later this year.

Letters to the Editor
With an impeccable attendance record, for decades this man has shared his expertise and talent as an architect to benefit the beauty of the district. He has worked with residents looking to update buildings, suggesting nuanced details to make applications historically appropriate – resulting almost invariably in unanimous votes approving of the proposed changes. Residents at the Jan. 10 Board of Selectmen meeting supported this eminently qualified man remaining on the Historic District Commission. The chair of the HDC was strongly supportive, as well. The other candidate wasn't even in attendance. He was merely voted in because of party affiliation. That our selectmen decided

Enough is enough Editor : Hasn't the Town of Durham been held hostage long enough by the plan formulated with the Town of Middlefield in 1969 to establish consolidation of schools, known as Regional School District 13? There were originally seven schools comprising the district: four in Durham, three in Middlefield. Due to declining enrollment over the years, there is now a total of five. One of those schools, John Lyman, had been assessed by our Board of Education to no longer be necessary, as the diminishing number of students does not warrant leaving it open. The
With the recent vote taken in Middlefield, the closure of Lyman School was defeated. It did win approval in Durham, but to no avail, because the majority in each town must be in sync. It would be a good time to rethink how the arrangement between both towns might be revised, since the majority of voters made their choice known: close this school. On Tuesday, Feb. 8 there will be another vote referencing the $7.2 million needed to renovate Lyman School. It could possibly be a wiser strategy to vote against this new proposal, because the result, otherwise, will keep District 13's budgets rich and the taxpayers poorish.
thorize $7.5 million for renovations and improvements to John Lyman School. Lyman School previously hosted an Integrated Day program. Elements of that program have been joined into Brewster School. Next, the Board of Education voted to close Lyman School. The closing became a heartbreak issue. Each town voted separately. Durham voted to close Lyman by a margin of 535 votes. Middlefield voted to maintain it by a margin of 97 votes. Now the BOE has decided to ask for $7.5 million to keep the school open for 20 years. The Feb. 8 referendum will combine all votes.

statewide.”
A Hartford HealthCare official said if the existing data holds, the surge of COVID19 infections in the state may be subsiding.
Four hours later, Gov. Ned Lamont’s administration released data revealing the state’s positivity rate had dropped to 19.35 percent and 22 fewer people were hospitalized, leaving a total of 1,895 patients.
“Jan. 11 was the peak for hospitalizations, (Jan. 12) for ICUs, and Jan. 5 for admissions,” Ulysses Wu, chief of infectious disease at Hartford HealthCare, said Friday, Jan. 14. “If they all hold true, we are now on the downside of the rollercoaster. This is

or two, but we should continue to maintain a downward trend at this point,” Wu said. The state’s latest COVID-19 report, which includes two weeks of data, showed 115 positive cases in Durham and 80 in Middlefield. In the previous report, Durham numbered 119 cases, and Middlefield 60. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, COVID-19 symptoms
may appear 2 to 14 days after exposure to the virus. Symptoms may include fever or chills, coughing, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, and diarrhea. Health officials encourage people to wear masks indoors and social distance if among unfamiliar people.
They are also encouraging people to get their first vaccine and boosters if their second shot was more than six months ago. A federal website where Americans can order free coronavirus rapid tests launched this week, allowing each household to order up to four tests. The website, called covidtest.gov, requires users to provide their name and address to receive the tests.

My life of isolation — and elation National A certain ennui descended upon my life. It came a-callin’ quite some time ago, when COVID reared its ugly head, and my social activities, such as they were, were curtailed. And still are. I have never needed much in the way of socialization. Despite appearances, I tend to be a bit of a lone wolf. The occasional lunch or visit with a friend serves me quite well. Or the occasional workshop. But all that has been put on hold. It feels like forever. And not to complain (of course, you know I will), the days have seemed to be a bit gray. And I am not just talking about the weather. There is a sameness to my life. If you know the day and the time, you know where I am and what I’m doing. I’m nothing if not predictable. Stop & Shop, my health food store, the feed store. Oh yes, and let’s not forget the exciting trip to Rite Aid in North Branford to get kitty Dakota’s insulin. Will the fun ever stop! Really, I yearn for lunch with a friend. But I do not dare. Not now. After some deep reflection (I think it
lasted a minute and a half ), I realized that this situation might go on for a spell, and so I had better change my attitude. I, therefore, have decided to love whatever is right in front of me, as if it was the most wonderful thing ever. If, for the time being, this is my world, well, let’s make it a good one. Let’s look at things differently. Let’s bring the magic back. On Wednesdays I go to Stop & Shop, and I am now inclined to see it as an absolutely thrilling adventure, not the ho-hum necessity I have deemed it to be. Actually, I do like grocery shopping because I like eating so much, and it seems to be a precursor. But now this weekly outing has me feeling almost euphoric. What a blessing it is that I have the wherewithal to fill up my shopping cart. Along the same vein, I try to remember – and sometimes succeed – to cherish my Honda Civic, who has never let me down in her 13 years with me. She’s a good girl. You already know how I feel about my nightly showers. They are a slice of heaven.
I wake up in the morning to kitty Dakota snuggling with me. And I think, “Could it get any better than this?” Well, that’s possible, but for now this is enough. More than enough. Every night I park in front of my Samsung, in my green flannel nightie with Santa Claus on it, with kitty Shiloh on my lap, drinking my lemonade, mesmerized by my fiber optic Christmas tree (it is staying right where it is until the spring) and my string of Christmas lights (they stay all year), and I truly am happy. I am in my own little cocoon, and all is right with the world. These days I am not so much feeling sorry for myself that my boys are far away. They both have had COVID (my younger son has it now but is recovering quickly), and now I am thinking See Carr, A13

Radon Action Month
You can’t see, smell or taste radon, but it could be present at a dangerous level in your home. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer deaths among nonsmokers in America and claims the lives of about 21,000 Americans each year. In fact, the EPA and the U.S. Surgeon General urge all Americans to protect their health by testing their homes, schools and other buildings for radon. Exposure to radon is a preventable health risk and testing radon levels in your home can help prevent unnecessary exposure. If a high radon level is detected, you can take steps to fix the problem to protect yourself and your family. January is National Radon Action Month. The EPA and the U.S. Surgeon General recommend that all homes in the U.S. be tested for radon. Testing is easy and inexpensive. Learn more about testing your home, including how to obtain an easy-to-use test kit, at epa.gov.

MERIDEN- Angela L. Parry Remillard, 45, of Meriden, wife of Dennis P. Remillard, passed away unexpectedly, January 9, 2022. Angela was born in Berlin, Vermont on April 25, 1976, beloved daughter of Lori Cannon and the late Lloyd (Bud) Cannon of Durham and Michael Parry of Rochester, NH. Angela graduated from Maloney High School, Class of 94 and attended Albertus Magnus College in New Haven obtaining her Bachelor of Arts degree, Class of 97 with a double major in Psych and Sociology in 3 years. She later attended Capitol Community College earning her Associates Degree in Nursing in 2008. Angela was working on completing her BSN degree. She loved working as a Registered Nurse and advocating for her patients as an ICU nurse for the majority of her nursing career. She developed a special bond with many she cared for and supported their families through crisis during their hospital stay. She worked at Middlesex Hospital and MidState in Meriden. Angela was an avid Boston Red Sox fan and even named her youngest son after Dustin Pedroia. She loved to go camping at the beach with a Walmart within 20 minutes distance and many family vacations included water-oriented destinations. She enjoyed gardening and spending time outside around the pool with a bonfire. She loved decorating her home for every special occasion, but Christmas was her favorite holiday of all. Angela loved her dogs Mickey and Lucy. Family
