A look inside the new community center

More than 200 residents were in attendance Sunday, Feb. 5 for a ribbon-cutting and open house at the yet unfinished community center, formerly the Francis E. Korn Elementary School.

Durham First Selectman George Eames said it was wonderful to see so many residents come together to tour the property, and he made a point to say that the Korn Building Committee appreciated the positive feedback it heard from attendees.

Eames said this day was a long time coming.

In 2021 it appeared that the vacant building at 44 Pickett Lane was headed for demolition. However, after a successful petition drive, and a referendum vote, the Town of Durham moved to turn the former school into a multi-purpose community center.

Durham residents voted to take ownership of the building from the Region 13 School District, for $1, and approved drawing $1 million from the town’s Building Reserve Fund for the initial project costs.

Among the attendees at Sunday’s ribbon-cutting and open house was longtime local educator Ray Hubbard, who taught third grade at Korn; and Nancy Bihlmeyer, who has lived in Durham for more than 50 years, and recalled holding meetings at Korn as a Girl Scout leader.

and Sunday, people had a look inside at the First Selectman’s office, gymnasium, senior center, and several other spaces.

“This was a fantastic kickoff," Selectman Chad Spooner said. "And I am looking forward to seeing the answers from the suggestion boxes placed around the building.”

Spooner said Durham's emergency management team will soon work out of the new community center.

For the past few years, emergency services has been housed in a room on the third floor of Town Hall.

With the move to the community center, Spooner said emergency services will be able to function much better and have everything they need at hand.

May your Valentine’s Day be a sweet one

So just what would tickle your fancy come Valentine’s Day? Chocolates? Flowers? Your beloved looking deep into your eyes and telling you there’s noone on the face of the earth as amazing as you?

These days, flowers and chocolates are Valentine’s Day staples, but it wasn’t always so. Let’s take a look at some old-timey traditions, as revealed by an Internet search ...

The ancient Greeks and Romans believed that the first bird an unmarried woman saw on Valentine’s Day was a symbol of the kind of man she would marry. For instance, a swan meant a loyal partner was on the horizon. A dove predicted a kindhearted person would be coming along. And a blackbird indicated that a woman would marry a member of the clergy or someone who did spiritual, charitable work.

Then there was the “vinegar Valentine,” something nobody wanted to get. The Victorians not only wrote love poems, they also penned nasty notes to those from whom they wished to detach. And they didn’t pull any punches. They listed all the traits of their target that they loathed, along with a caricature illustration. Ouch!

Fortunately, the Victorians also engaged in something a bit friendlier. They would fold paper into what they called puzzle purses. The unfolding of each corner revealed an endearing poem or drawing.

The different color of roses held different meanings for the Victorians. Red symbolized love. White meant innocence. Yellow spoke of jealousy or infidelity. And flowers were used to deliver yes or no answers. Delivery with the right hand meant yes and delivery with the left meant, well, maybe next year.

During the ancient Roman festival Lupercalia, celebrated in mid-February, women would pin the name of their love interest on their shirt sleeve.

The Welsh commemorated Saint Dwynwen, their patron saint of lovers, on Jan. 25. There were flowers and chocolates, as well as the love spoon, whereby men whittled an intricately-crafted spoon for their paramour. The tradition of the love spoon began 300 years ago and continues to this day. It serves a two-fold purpose –as a marriage proposal and as a symbol of the man’s devotion.

A Victorian man would send one glove to the object of his affections, in the hope that she would wear it on Easter Sunday as a sign that she returned his love. The Victorian male also was no slouch in the card department. His cards were apt to be covered in ribbons, pressed flowers, gold and silver foil paper, and lace.

Europeans, during the Middle Ages, had some interesting ways of greeting Valentine’s Day. The identity of a girl’s future husband was determined through dreams or prophetic visions inspired by pinning sage leaves to her pillow or putting a slice of wedding cake under it. Or the girl would put letters in a bowl of water, do some chanting, and see what floated to the top.

And then, of course, there was the tradition of going to the cemetery on Valentine’s Day to look for signs and omens at midnight that would reveal the identity of one’s true love.

Ladies, you may very well get the flowers and chocolates. Or perhaps you will see a swan (for a loyal man) or a dove (for a kind man). Will you be receiving a love spoon or a glove? (Neither one is as good as chocolates, in my opinion.) Or will you be roaming the cemetery at midnight, looking for clues of a love life yet to come?

That last one is definitely not for me. I will, as usual, be snoozing in front of the TV at 8:00, maybe sooner. I doubt that any potential suitor could compete with my couch and my Samsung.

The Executive Board of the Middlesex Hospital Vocal Chords is requesting applications for its annual scholarships to be awarded to students from Middlesex County pursuing a career in nursing or music. Rockfall Foundation

The Virginia R. Rollefson Environmental Leadership Scholarship, offered by The Rockfall Foundation since 2018, recognizes outstanding contributions by a high school senior residing in the Lower Connecticut River Valley for carrying out a program, project, or activity that benefits preservation, conservation, restoration or environmental education.

One $1,000 scholarship is awarded yearly to a student who demonstrates leadership and initiative.

Pink Out

The Coginchaug Regional High School boys and girls basketball teams will host a Pink Out doubleheader against Hale-Ray tonight, Feb. 10. The girls play at 5, the boys at 7. Baked goods and a limited number of Pink Out T-shirts will be available for purchase, with all proceeds going to the Smilow Cancer Hospital (in memory of Brenna Zettergren) and St. Jude Hospital (in memory of Debbie Sokol). Military night

Roger E. Fairchild

DURHAM- Roger E. Fairchild, 93, of Durham, husband of the late Jean L. (Langhoff) Fairchild, died Saturday, January 28, 2023, at Autumn Lake Healthcare at Cromwell. Roger was born in New Haven, son of the late, Charles R. Fairchild and Ida Mae (Potwine) Fairchild. Prior to his retirement Roger was employed at SNET for 35 years. He was veteran serving the U.S. Army after WWII in Japan. Roger is survived by two sons, Mark Fairchild and his wife Teri of Durham, Chris Fairchild and his partner Karen of Middletown, six grandchildren, Meagan, Lauren, callee, Michael, Patrick and Nick. He was predeceased by a son, Jon Fairchild, a brother Justin and a sister Shirley. Roger and his wife enjoyed their spare time traveling across the country visiting many of our national parks. Visit a museum

While it may seem obvious, it should be reinforced that in the winter, museums are an excellent escape from the bitter cold. Museums across the region are constantly cycling out pieces to make room for new artists and exhibits to be featured, so if you think you’ve seen all a place has to offer, you should think again. The Bicycle Game is a fabulous new exhibit that the Connecticut Historical Society has up until now through fall, and the Wadsworth Atheneum is currently highlighting female-focused art and flamework via glass art. The New Britain Museum of American Art, in New Britain, offers free admission if you arrive between 10 a.m. and noon on Saturdays.

The Durham Lions Club’s recently-refurbished drop box is ready for your eyeglass donations at the Durham Pharmacy. Donating used eye glasses can make a big difference for people all over the world.
