YOU LOOKIN’ AT ME?

School principal a ‘breath of fresh air’ By Bronwyn Commins Special to Town Times

After the most devastating of storms, we often are blessed with beautiful skies. Whether it’s the arc of a rainbow that connects one backyard to another following torrential downpours, or the rose-colored hue that may appear once powerful winds subside, there is peace in the promise of something good coming out of tough times. To that point, while the past 24 months have not been easy for local students and educators, many positives have occurred throughout the district. The hiring of Cheryl Gonzalez, Strong Middle School’s new principal, can be counted among them. “I am grateful that she is serving the learners, families

Francis elected to helm state council The Connecticut Council of Small Towns elected Durham First Selectman Laura Francis as President of COST at its annual meeting, held Feb. 8 at the Aqua Turf Francis Club in Plantsville.

On Saturday, Feb. 12, the weather was just right for taking a walk — with a goat. Once again, Lyman Orchards teamed with Bradley Mountain Farm to host a goat stroll. Guests recieved a bag of goat treats and had 15 minutes to walk around with — and even cuddle — the docile animals. Photo by Brett Bogdan

COST represents 115 smaller communities throughout Connecticut and works to give rural and suburban municipalities a strong voice in the legislative process.

“I am honored to be elected by my peers as COST’s President,” said Francis. “2022 will continue to present many challenges for Connecticut’s municipalities due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. At the same time, there are a number of issues that we must work together to address to position ConSee Francis, A5

The naysayers like to remind me that March can be a bear of a winter month, to which I reply, “I know that, but the worst of it is behind us.”

I was feeling rather impressed with myself. Usually I count the minutes until spring comes a-callin’, but this winter I was just merrily rolling along, taking things day-by-day, with nary a worry.

During my happy phase, regarding winter, I was thrilled to see February. It is a short month, and to me it means we are on the homestretch, even though we all know that this month can really pack a punch.

It’s almost March. Yay! And that’s my Birthday Month. Double yay!

This is so unlike me, being just fine with the weather and all.

But up next is March, and that means we really are on the homestretch. Now all my patience is pretty much gone. I want to rush this month right along. Get moving, February. Let your days have wings on them.

The bitter cold days and the ice and the slush were not getting to me, and I knew that they would make those warm balmy spring days, by comparison, really special. We would appreciate them more because of what we have just gone through. So I was just soldiering on, pushing right through the Arctic chill and the sometimes-scary driving. I’ve got this!

But then my happy-go-lucky frame of mind went up in smoke.

Actually, I am starting to see signs that light me up. The days are noticeably longer. The Christmas lights (you read that correctly) are coming on a bit later these days. And this morning I heard birds. Always a mood booster.

GOP lawmakers sound off on masks in school The Democratic Party-controlled state legislature voted recently to extend some of Gov. Ned Lamont’s remaining pandemic-related executive orders, including a statewide mask mandate for schools and child care centers Lamont has said he wants lifted Feb. 28.

“The one generation that was least impacted physiologically by the virus has been affected most by the restrictions from state government,” House Republican Leader Vincent Candelora said. “Democrats today opposed our amendment to give parents the power to opt their children out of school mask mandates, and they approved the extension of executive orders from Gov. Lamont despite the concerns of so many frustrated residents who say it's time to move on.” Candelora represents the 86th House District, which is comprised of North Branford, Guilford, Durham and Wallingford. “Restoring traditional operating procedures at the capitol should be a bipartisan goal, as should making the lives of schoolchildren normal again,” Candelora said. Another local Republican lawmaker, state Sen. Paul Cicarella, also voted against extending the governor’s executive orders. Cicarella’s district — the 34th — includes the communities of

“Our job is to be the voice of the people. This caucus heard the voice of our constituents loud and clear, and parents want the decision to mask or unmask their children to be their own. It’s imperative that parents are able to make decisions that they believe to be best for their kids,” Cicarella stated. “It’s also alarming the decisions that were made by the government with a lack of data on the benefits and consequences of masking our children. With that said, this is another reason why it is vital to leave this type of important decision up to parents.” Besides the masking requirement, other executive orders being extended include requiring vaccination or testing for nursing home visitors, relaxing certain training and hiring requirements for medical professionals to address staffing shortages, and waiving bidding requirements to procure goods and services needed to respond to the pandemic.

GOP has strongly opposed. Rather, Democrats say the states of emergency are necessary so Connecticut can keep getting federal pan-

demic relief funds, including roughly $31 million a month in extra benefits under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

Many Republicans have argued that parents should now be the ones deciding whether their children should wear masks in school, not state or local government officials, given the state’s improving COVID infection rate.

Gonzalez’s journey to becoming Strong’s principal was set in motion at a young age. As a fourth grader, she was inspired by one particular teacher’s “caring” and “joyful” manner. “She noticed me,” said Gonzalez, who spent most of her career in education in Middletown. In her new role, Gonzalez aims to “support people so they can do their best” and “what’s best for children.” She doesn’t believe in educators acting as “cogs in a machine.”

When asked what has stood out to her during her time in the district, Gonzalez pointed to the kindness of students, and the hospitality administrators have shown her. Strong Middle School library assistant Karen Kean said Gonzalez is a “breath of fresh air” and a “very good fit for Strong.” School social worker Kathy Bottini has been impressed with Gonzalez as well. “She has a calm and positive demeanor that makes her very approachable,” Bottini said. And, no need to worry. Gonzalez is quite familiar with the Durham Fair, and looks forward to attending this fall, and beyond. She said students “love seeing us out of the school.”

BACK TO WORK

Obituaries State lawmakers opened the 2022 legislative session last week with hopes of returning the state back to normal — as much as possible — following two years of grappling with the pandemic. In a Feb. 9 social media post, state Sen. Christine Cohen wrote: “I went into today with the same sense of excitement and anticipation as I did in January of 2019 for my initial swearing in. Opening day brings with it a tremendous amount of hope for a brighter future and an even better Connecticut. The next twelve weeks will be a whirlwind, but I’m looking forward to working hard for the constituents of this beautiful district. Thank you for allowing me to be your voice in Hartford.” Cohen represents the 12th Senate District of Branford, North Branford, Durham, Guilford, Killingworth and Madison.
