Too sedentary these days? Try a virtual 5K By Everett Bishop Town Times
Middlefield’s Park and Recreation Department is ready to sprint into spring, are you?
While residents are confined to their houses, town government continues to find ways to switch the focus from isolation to activities. However, with town parks and fields closed, opportuni-
ties to stay active are restricted. So, the Park and Recreation department announced recently it would be hosting a virtual 5K for town residents.
SOCIAL DISTANCING ON MOUNT HIGBY
Between now and the April 29 deadline, residents can participate in their own 5K, at their own pace, and submit their results via a photo of their smartwatch, app or treadmill. “Our local businesses are seeing a dramatic hit to their businesses due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The same businesses that have supported our teams and nonprofits with donations, sponsorships, and support, now need our help,” said Recreation Director Hannah Malcolm. “This virtual walk/ run is being set up with two goals in mind: Support our local businesses and to encourage you to get out and do a 5K at your own convenience.” The fee to participate is $25.
ABOVE: Leela Schrayter, of Meriden, and her dog, Kalea, enjoy the view from the top of Mount Higby in Middlefield last Tuesday. Leela had planned to move to California but due to travel restrictions she won’t be able to make the move until summer. Photos by Aaron Flaum, Record-Journal
RIGHT: Eric Liesener, 13, leads the way as his dad, Jan Liesener, mom Lisa Liesener and sister Lena Liesener 11, all from Middletown, climb down the Mount Higby portion of the Mattabesett Trail in Middlefield.
In order to spur income for local businesses, participants will be entered into a drawing for a $20 gift card to a business in Durham or Middlefield. Additional $10 gift cards will be given to the top finishers. “I think it’s a great idea. And Hannah comes up with some creative, new ways of doing things. I’m not surprised she came up with this,” said First Selectman Edward Bailey. “Anything that gives people a diversion while practicing social distancing is important.” Those interested in learning more about the virtual 5K can visit the Middlefield Park and Recreation Facebook page, or sign up at middlefieldct.recdesk.com.
Volunteers making protective masks for local seniors By Everett Bishop Town Times
In light of the COVID pandemic and subsequent shortages of protective face masks, Middlefield residents have answered the call of duty in their community by sewing face masks.
senior residents are offered three frozen microwavable meals to bring home. Fearful of catching the virus, one senior inquired about the possibility of providing masks at pick up.
“She asked if I had any masks, and in my mind, I said ‘Well, I haven’t added “I actually got a request from that to my list of things that I one of my seniors to do this,” need to sew,’” said D’Orvilsaid Sue D’Orvilliers, direcliers. tor of senior and social serSeeing a need for face masks vices. in the community, D’OrvilAccording to D’Orvilliers, liers tackled the challenge the request came when a se- head on. So far, the response has been overwhelming. One day, Marigold made eight visits. Also on tap for the jovial cow was a stop at a food bank pick-up and a visit with an 84-year-old widow on what would have been her 64th wedding anniversary.

For years Len Fasano has played the role of underdog, and played it well. The Republican, representing the 34th District of Durham, East, Haven, North Haven and Wallingford, has in recent years been the minority leader in the Connecticut Senate. Democrats have held an overwhelming majority for most of that time, but Fasano has still managed to bring the minority party’s perspective to the fore. Republicans will now face that challenge without Fasano, who has decided not to seek re-election. The 61-year-old was elected to the Senate in 2002,
and became caucus leader after the 2014 election. He won re-election in 2018 with 58.5 percent of the vote, a sign of his continuing popularity in the district. Connecticut will miss his service in the Senate, where Fasano has managed to strongly present an alternative view from the minority party. A recent example is the battle over tolls, with Republicans offering the contention that Connecticut can manage its transportation needs without them. Democrats have that vast majority, but still there are no tolls. See Fasano, A8

It’s worth hoping that Republicans can find someone to fill those shoes. One-party rule is a liability when the majority doesn’t have to listen to the minority, and Fasano has battled to keep that liability at bay.

The Republican plan relied on pension liabilities and annual borrowing to fund transportation needs.
It’s a testament to his abilities as a leader that compliments came from across the aisle.

How to make a cloth mask
Seniors
By Bailey Wright Record-Journal staff
From A1
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now recommends wearing masks in public places to limit the spread of COVID-19. The masks are an extra step — in addition to social distancing and washing hands. “Masks are not a substitute for social distancing,” said Lea Crown, Meriden health and human services director. “Everyone should
still aim to maintain the six foot distance from others, as well as practice other public health prevention efforts such as regular hand washing.”
“I called Vicki Berry, who is the Children’s Librarian at Levi E. Coe … and she had already been making masks for Middlesex Hospital,” she said.
Cloth masks were recommended for general public use, as medical masks are in short supply and should be reserved for healthcare workers and first responders, the CDC said.
“Masks help as they reduce the droplets becoming airborne of the See Masks, A21
Berry, who had been collecting masks outside of the Middlefield Federated Church for Middlesex, had stopped sewing masks for the hospital after
having been told that the hospital “had stopped accepting that type of mask.” So, Berry opened up the collection box for masks for local seniors. “I’m also sharing them with Durham once I get a pile of them,” said D’Orvilliers. “Morgan Perry, who is my counterpart in Durham, I told her that I would get them to her.” Perry added her thanks to D’Orvilliers and ev-
eryone else who has come out to donate. “What’s really nice to see is people who haven’t volunteered are stepping up to volunteer,” said D’Orvilliers. “People are problemsolving and people are really seeing where the needs are. That is worth its weight in gold to me.” ebishop@ record-journal.com 203-317-2444 Twitter: @everett_bishop

MONEY MATTERS: Stock market volatility and retirement By Jeff Jolly
Retirement is an important milestone that often comes after years (or decades) of careful planning. But even the most seasoned planners couldn’t have foreseen the severe market selloff that happened in March in reaction to the COVID-19 pandemic. The abrupt end to the 10-year bull market surprised investors of all ages who are now wondering how long it will take for their
portfolios to recover. Unlike younger workers with many years ahead of earning and Jolly saving, investors who are retired or nearing retirement have less time to wait out their losses. But there are still actions they can take
to help secure their finances, even during periods of uncertainty like we’re experiencing today. If this situation applies to you, here are a few steps to consider in this new environment : If you are approaching retirement :
time now to decide the year and month when you (and potentially your spouse or partner) want to retire. Given the current environment, you may want to consider extending your time in the workforce – whether it’s continuing your current career or moving into a new full- or part-time role. Either way, your answer can have a big impact on your investment decisions from this point forward.
Pick your retirement date If you haven’t already, take

Ensure your investments are diversified Not all sectors of the economy are alike, and they react to news and events differently. For those nearing retirement, the recent spike in volatility is a reminder of how having a broadly diversified portfolio can help reduce your investing risk. Instead of simply selling your stocks in attempt to cut your losses, review your portfolio to see if it is properly balanced between stocks, bonds and cash that align with your goals, time horizon and your ability to manage risk. While a diversified portfolio can’t guarantee profits or protect against all losses, it can greatly reduce the impact of volatility.
Balance your need for protection with growth Protecting your portfolio from market downturns becomes more important as you approach the day when you start living off your savings. During this time, you may want to consider investing the money you plan to use for income in the first few years of retirement more conservatively in liquid vehicles that are easy to access. This can help give you peace of mind that you are prepared to handle upcoming expenses no matter what’s happening in the markets. If you are currently in retirement :
Review your withdrawal strategy If the recent decrease in the value of your portfolio makes you nervous, revisit the amount of money you withdraw monthly to meet your expenses. As you review, the goal is to be assured that the amount you withdraw to meet the next year or two of expenses See Jolly, A24

The CDC has provided instructions for how to make different types of masks, including no-sew ones which only require cloth and rubber bands or hair ties.
An effective cloth mask should fit snug but comfortably against the side of the face, be secured with ties or ear loops, include multiple layers of fabric, allow for breathing without restriction, and be able to be laundered, according to the CDC. A mask can be made fromcutting a strip of fabric from a T-shirt, or using a bandana or otherwise square 20 inch by 20 inch cotton cloth. A coffee filter can be used inside.
Some local residents and businesses have stepped up to help sew masks for others. In Wallingford, Patricia Longobardi is trying to get fabric masks to people in need, nurses in particular, many who are using the fabric masks as an extra layer over medical ones. The masks

“Some masks were donated to Yale New Haven Hospital, some have been distributed to members in the community who have asked, and some will be donated to local first responders,” Cucinelli said. Both women said elastic for ear attachments is the hardest material to come by. Cucinelli said its hard to find locally, and the wait time for shipping materials online is long.

“I also continue to urge people to only go to stores for essential items. This is not the time to browse or go to the store because you may be bored at home. If you don’t absolutely need the item, don’t go to the store,” Lockwood said.
Like many homemade mask makers, Longobardi isn’t charging for them. Instead she’s asking for donations to give to the Wallingford Wishing Well.

The masks should be used in any area where social distancing is hard to maintain, like grocery stores and pharmacies, especially in areas with community-based transmission, the CDC says.
Longobardi hasn’t stopped making them since and doesn’t have plans to slow down. She hasn’t kept track of how many she’s made, but knows it’s a lot. “I’m working on an order of 100 right now,” she said last week.
“I'm naturally a helper, so I wanted to find ways to help during this stressful time,” said Michelle Cucinelli, a Wallingford resident, via Facebook Messenger. “I'm not in health care, although a lot of family is, so I put my sewing skills to use and started making masks once I saw there was such a huge need for them in the community.”

Crown said when making her own masks, rubber bands worked much better. She said the masks need to be routinely washed based on use.
She started sewing masks about three weeks ago when a friend working at Genesis HealthCare Facility in Wallingford needed them.

person wearing the mask, especially those who may cough or sneeze,” said Shane Lockwood, director of public health with the PlainvilleSouthington Regional Health District. The health district also covers Middlefield.
Longobardi owns a small business called “Sewing by Patricia” and usually tailors dresses for proms and weddings, but since everything was cancelled, she’s had more free time. It also means she has the supplies and skills to spare.

For the long-term investor – which may include you as a retiree – volatility in equities can work in your favor. It’s possible that you will spend one to three decades in retirement, giving you time to withstand some market moves. At the same time, it’s important to preserve your base of savings and not be overexposed to stock risk. Now is a good time to review your exposure in the context
of your full financial plan to evaluate if you are taking the right amount of risk. Additionally, focus your equity portfolio on higher quality stocks – primarily blue-chip companies that tend to demonstrate more stable performance. Stocks that pay competitive dividends may also be an effective choice to provide a source of reliable return on your investments.
