Yoga studio opens in Durham Village By Nicole Zappone Town Times
For local business owner Jess DaSilva, April 4 was a day for celebration, as Aloha Vinyasa, Durham's first yoga studio, opened for business. “We already have classes very booked, and the town has been supportive,” she said. Aloha Vinyasa, located at 16 Main St. #205, offers something for everyone, from yoga beginners to experienced practitioners. Photographer Antonio Arreguin travels all over Connecticut, as well as New York and Massachusetts, plying his trade. “I will travel anywhere to take photos of events and people,” he said. I appreciate you leaving the key out for me. I did not relish the idea of sliding down the chimney. I would not want my white fur coat to be besmirched with soot, as it would not be a good look for me. As you foresaw, you were sound asleep in front of the TV when I arrived. I tried to get there at a respectable hour, so as not to wake you, but 7:30 would have been just a tad too early. Not to be rude, but the wide open mouth and the snoring-well, I’d like to say it was adorable, but not so much. Anyhooo, when I shook you awake ever so gently, you seemed a bit “out of it” at first, but when you got your bearings, you were most pleased to see me. I love the way you jumped up and down and clapped your hands and squealed and
The salad that you served me really hit the spot. Not to name names (Santa Claus), but if a certain someone else were to chew on carrots more and cookies less, he might not be built like the Pillsbury dough boy. But I digress. I love the special sauce that you put on my salad. You came up with that on your own? Most impressive. And how lovely of you to give me some carrots for the road. And organic ones at that! We never did get around to watching TV, though, did we? But that suited me just fine. I can watch TV any time (yes, I have one in my burrow), but good conversation – that’s where the treasure lies. I could have chatted with you for hours, were it not for the night’s journey that lay ahead. I learned so much about you, and you learned so much about me. We really are cut from the same cloth. Your kitties were quite wellbehaved, I must say. I really wasn’t too worried about them anyway. Like you had said in your letter, if they do not go after a mouse, and
Thanks for buying me two pairs of Jordan’s, with Dr. Scholl’s tucked into them. I do not have the luxury of a sleigh, like someone else we both know. And a night’s worth of hopping does beat up the tootsies somewhat. As per your request, I was able to book a flight to Sweden and pop in on your family. What a lovely bunch! You must have told them to expect me because they left out some Swedish delicacies, the likes of which I have never had before and would love to have again. I peeked in on your grandson, Hayden, who was fast asleep. I woke him up and gave him a big hug. I knew you would like that. He did not seem the least bit surprised to see me. Such a precious boy. And I don’t think he’s too old to believe in me. He’s like you. You believe in everything, always.

“When I came to the United States, I bought my first camera before I bought my first winter coat,” Arreguin laughed. “That’s how much I loved it.”
It’s difficult right now to be different from other photographers, said Arreguin. It’s different from his early years, because film was still used and a photographer wouldn’t be able to see the results until one or two days later. Now, anyone with a phone has access to a good camera. “Anyone can take a good photo,” noted Arreguin. “Which is why you must learn to stand out from the rest.”
In 1992, he started taking pictures professionally. “I started by doing my own pictures at weddings and with family but in 1999, I was working at the Milford Mall at a studio that was called the Picture People.” At the Picture People, Arreguin was booking a lot of clients and that’s when he decided it was time to open his own studio — Photography by Antonio. He opened his first studio in New Haven and then moved to Middlefield. The studio is located at 6 Way Road #308. “It takes a lot of dedication to be where I am now,” Arreguin said. “Advice that I would give to people looking to make a career out of photography is to always be open-minded when taking shots.” He said that if someone is looking to give you pointers on a photo you took, taking that information and trying to apply it on future photoshoots can evolve
He took three photography courses throughout his career, with one of them being a film photography course. A great way for him to learn photography, he recalled.

event -that can start with a special Mass followed by a reception with food and music- is a big part for many Latino families interested in keeping alive the tradition. Recently, Arreguin did a photoshoot for Sharmel Rivera’s quinceañera that took place in Hamden, Connecticut. “I was looking at other photographers at first but couldn’t find any that I really liked,” Rivera said. “And then my mom mentioned Antonio and we decided to work with him since he actually took my baptism photos years ago.” Rivera loved the results when she received the photos, she recalled. “He made it look so natural and I didn’t feel awkward while he was taking them,” Rivera said. Her mother, Teresa Méndez, noted that capturing her daughter’s quinceañera was a beautiful moment. Finding

Arreguin mentioned that when capturing a quinceañero, he thinks of it as a wedding because it’s a big deal to the community and birthday girl. “I want them to look back and relive great memories.”
Photography by Antonio The photographer travels all over Connecticut, as well as New York and Massachusetts to take photos. “I will travel anywhere to take photos of events and people,” Arreguín said. The business owner also looks for opportunities to help out the community. One time, during Mother’s Day, he did free photoshoots for mothers so they could cherish their memories. Being a self employed photographer, Arreguin tries to accommodate individuals who may not be able to afford professional photos. “I find it important to work closely with my clients because everyone deserves to have that special moment,” Arreguin mentioned. R-J Invitational rounds back into form By Sean Krofssik Record-Journal staff
MERIDEN — Friday, April 15 was a celebration of area track and field. Seven squads took part in the annual Record-Journal Invitational on a sun-filled breezy day at Platt High School. All of the coaches worked together to officiate and score the event, which featured hundreds of local athletes from Southington, Cheshire, Sheehan, Lyman Hall, Coginchaug, Maloney and host Platt. The day featured varsity, JV and co-ed relays and was highlighted by some great individual performances. Athletes were allowed a maximum of two events apiece and several came away as double-winners. Among them were Sheehan seniors Amanda Castaldi and Avery Winters, Sheehan sophomore Kathryn Lombino and Maloney sophomore Bria Benigni.

He tied Lyman Hall’s Yahya Kardad in the 400 at 53 seconds flat and then won the 200 outright in 24.90. “I don’t really like doing the 400, but I liked it today,” Setzer said. “I was in third place at the beginning and then I caught up.” Cheshire junior Colin Brown and Cheshire sophomore Tyler Caron won both times they took the track. Brown captured the 100 in 10.9 and Caron won the 1,600 in 4:42.70. The duo then teamed with Mia Vientos and Ashlyn Diglio to win the 4x400 co-ed relay in 2:56.
Lombino, the Sheehan sophomore, had the breakout meet at the R-J. She won the long jump at 16 feet, 5 “With those four working toinches and the triple jump at gether so well, it was a nice 33-05. finish to the meet,” Cheshire girls track coach Barbara “I was surprised,” Lombino Hedden said. “Everyone did said. “I wasn’t expected to win two events. to win the long jump (19-¼). Rovelli also took first in the javelin (146-09). Another big highlight on the girls side was Maloney high jumper Shaelyn Murphy. She not only set a new Maloney girls outdoor record, she competed against the boys and was the top overall performer in the event. Murphy’s jump of 5-6 matched the school record she set during the indoor season. On Friday, 5-6 bested Platt’s Kymani Johnson and Sheehan’s Jelan Kollie by two inches. Murphy has already qualified for Nationals after making it in the indoor season. Other individual winners for the girls Friday were Coginchaug’s Allison Vigue in the pole vault (14-9), Maloney’s Savannah Vasquez in the 3,200 (12:55.40) and Southington’s Hailey Zembrzuski in the javelin (110-00).

“I just came out for the team and everyone was cheering me on and I just did what I could do.” Zembrzuski said. “This is only my second meet ever. I just started. I knew I could come in and throw, but I impressed myself on that throw today.” Sheehan had two female winners in the throws: Darla Jagrosse in the shot put (3311½) and Madison DiPasquale in discus (119-6). The day started with a win by Platt in the 4x100 co-ed relay. Estella Delacruz, Dayanara Gonzalez, Brandon Carrion and Zyair Coleman crossed in 47.80. Platt’s Vittorio Church won the triple jump in 37-1½ inches and fellow Panther Reggie Darkah won shot put with a toss of 49-9½. Cheshire’s Robert DiNatale won the 3,200 easily with a time of 10:31.70.
“This was a nice opportunity to show themselves today and we are looking forward to where they go from here,” Dvarskas said. “It was a good day.” Lyman Hall had a pair of winners on the boys side. Mason Williams threw a career-best 132-8 to take discus and Chance DeCrescenzo was tops in pole vault (12-6).
DeCrescenzo, who came in as the favorite, was the only competitor in the event to still be standing after 11 feet. Williams said one of his main goals was to get 130 feet this year and he did that on Friday. The throw came on his second attempt of the day.
>> Cheshire coach Allen Dvarskas said the meet was well run and well organized.

Southington senior John Regalbuti won the 110 hurdles in 16.3 to highlight the day for the Blue Knight boys. Coginchaug took first, second and third in the 800. Will Dalles won the race in 2:03.40. Sheehan track coach Charles Farley said the meet was a success. “A lot of people stepped up to make this come off the way we hoped to,” Farley said. “Once we got it going, we did well. Everybody contributed and we got everything done the way we want- Coginchaug’s Gage Rovelli. Aaron Flaum, Record-Journal ed to.”

The Record-Journal’s Latino Communities Reporting Lab (Reportajes de la Comunidad Latina) launched in March 2021. Our mission is: To amplify the voices of our local Latino communities. The Lab, in partnership with the national service program Report for America, is hiring a multimedia journalist who will create local content that reflects the Latino experience in our community. Report for America has agreed to match every dollar we raise up to $25,000, and we need your help to support our new multimedia journalist. You can support local reporting and provide empowering, fact-based news, information, and resources for our Latino Communities.

Our library is raising money to host a community mural as part of Wallingford’s 350th anniversary. The mural will be a collaborative project celebrating the people who live in our town. Local artist Rashmi Talpade painted a giant tree in the library and will help residents create decorative “leaves” with images of themselves and their families. Most images will be photographs, but self-portraits in other mediums will also be welcome. As the leaf-shaped images are created, community participants will see them affixed to the tree and watch the development of the mural, akin to a tree sprouting leaves. We are seeking $5,000 to cover the costs. The Wallingford Public Library is excited to showcase this beautiful, visual reflection of the people who make up our community.

The Wallingford Chorus was founded in 1970 to celebrate the Town of Wallingford’s Tercentenary. For over fifty years, the chorus has continuously performed and promoted choral music in central CT. It’s our way of raising spirits and inspiring new thoughts, giving our audience a chance to lose themselves in music as a break from everyday life. We perform two concerts a year, one in December and one in May. Our material varies from singing light repertoires to more complex pieces including selections of multicultural works. Most recently, however, we have performed songs from Broadway, the cinema, and the 60’s. We are a fun group! We want our audiences to have fun with us. Do not be surprised if you come to one of our concerts and you are asked to sing along! Your donation to the great give will go directly to paying our amazing Music Director and Accompanist, and allowing us to purchase new and exciting music to perform for you.
