Middletown Dem enters race for 13th Senate seat

FLYING HIGH

By Michael Gagne Record-Journal staff

A Middletown Democrat has entered the race for the 13th Senate district. Anthony Mangiafico, a member of the Middletown Common Council and principal of the East Hartford Adult & Continuing Education program, filed paperwork registering as a candidate on April 26, according to state campaign filings. The 13th Senate district covers Meriden and Middlefield, along with parts of Cheshire and Middletown.

Hochadel, his opponent in seeking the Democratic nomination, is the current president of the American Federation of Teachers Connecticut union, with which the local Meriden Federation of Teachers union is affiliated. Hochadel is a former science teacher in the state technical high school system, having taught at Wright Technical High School in Stamford and at Kaynor Technical High School in Waterbury.

Mangiafico, who is in his third year serving on the Middletown Common Council, said, “I think that I have the right experience to tackle this seat right now.”

Earlier this spring, the national Coalition on Adult Basic Education named Mangiafico as outstanding administrator of the year. According to the coalition, the

Students hold walkout to shine light on bullying, racism issues By Nicole Zappone Town Times

Last Friday morning, more than 100 Coginchaug Regional High School students exited the building and convened outside to draw attention to incidents of racism and bullying which have occured throughout the district.

Coginchaug junior Julia Talbert-Slagle, who spearheaded the walkout, has compiled a list of 79 ugly incidents which have taken place in the district, most of them in 2021 and 2022. “Many of these go ignored and unaddressed by the school system,” she said.

Talbert-Slagle said she hopes that the BOE will work to Teachers from the high correct that. Letters to the Editor Editor : Durham voters, on Monday, May 9, I am seeking another term on the Board of Education for the term ending in December 2023 and hope I have your support. This is the last town meeting election for the BOE until all members are elected for a four-year term in our general elections.

This is no longer the case. The incidents of racism in our schools is shocking to me. Those not on social media or with children in school have no idea what is happening. Neither Town Times nor any other local papers report on this subject. I think we can all agree that racism is wrong. No debate; totally wrong. So what can we do? We can model and teach our children kindness and empathy. If that isn’t done, there is no other choice than to let the school system take over the job.

The $70,400 in this budget line will provide for continuity of DMYFS programs and services during this transitional year, allowing time to satisfy procurement requirements (bidding processes, etc.) for subsequent budget years. The suggested structural changes to administrative oversight, etc., are not an option until the federal grant funding is expended. Durham voters will have an opportunity to comment and vote on the 2022-23 Town Budget at the meeting on May 9. We hope you will turn out to support this very important annual town budget process. I hope to continue to serve on the board for several reasons. The primary one is to support our students in their education and preparation for the future. I also want to assist the superintendent’s effort in “Reimagining Education,” as it will focus on the individual needs of every student and attract families to the district. Further, I hope to be able to help the Board of Education in its role to prevent incidents of racism, which have occurred in the district, and to assure our equity, discrimination and bullying policies are being followed. Finally, I want to ensure that our schools remain a safe and nurturing environment for every student.

Witness Stone to be dedicated By Kate Roraback

This year, I have been part of a group of 8th graders known as The Strong School Witness Stones Team. We have been working to discover more about the history of slavery in our community. This project was made possible through a generous grant from Connecticut Valley Education Foundation. Our Witness Stones Team would like to present to you some of what we have learned about slave governors and also to invite you to our Witness Stones Dedication Celebration on Friday, May 13.

The event will take place at the United Churches of Durham, 228 Main St. We have planned an outdoor dedication of the stone commemorating Caesar followed by a reception with light refreshments at Fellowship Hall to follow.

During yearly elections for governor in the 1750s, slaves who came along with their enslavers would elect a governor for their own community. The first slave governor Everyone is invited! was elected in Hartford in 1775. This tradition spread, and soon many towns in the area had an elected slave governor, including Durham. This position required a well-respected, male member of the black community, who, frequently was enslaved by an influential family. Slave governors could serve multiple terms, and the election was held a week after the state governor’s election. A celebration would often follow.

Slave governors acted as mediators between black and white communities. They also would keep order in black communities by giving punishments to those who broke the law. Some of the slave governor’s duties would be handed to assistants. Please join us on May 13 at 3 p.m. for a celebration of the installation of the Witness Stone, to celebrate and remember Caesar Stevenson, a slave governor who lived in Durham.
