Crowds flock to Powder Ridge By Everett Bishop Town Times
As the state begins to reopen, Powder Ridge Mountain Park & Resort is up and running again. After closing in March, the Middlefield landmark reopened May 21. The weekend turnout indicated visitors missed the mountain.
Powder Ridge also opened its restaurant, Fire at the Ridge, with deck seating, take out, curbside pick up and a new offering — fire pit dining.
Distance learning receives high grades “There’s a large fire pit in the middle with Adirondack chairs around it with little tables and people can reserve those and have dinner service or lunch service right there around the fire pit,” Loffredo said. With social distancing guidelines, fire pit dining
could seat about 80 guests “at any given time, ” Loffredo said. Over opening weekend, fire pit dining reservations were sold out. Sean Hayes, CEO of Powder Ridge, said they are remaining “very conscious of social distancing and required proSee Powder Ridge, A21

COMMENTARY
Since Ms. Szynkowicz appears to have misunderstood our voting system, I encourage her to discuss these issues with her local election officials and absentee ballot counters. The voting process has safeguards that Ms. Szynkowicz omitted. Our voter database is undergoing constant revision during the year and data that looks wrong is not necessarily wrong. Registrars spend a lot of time maintaining accurate databases. We need to know where people live so they can receive the correct ballot. Any database is a balance between the costs of maintaining a perfect database and the accuracy of the data. I do not claim that our database is completely accurate – our voters are constantly marrying, moving, dieing, etc. But the voter database is constantly revised. We process information from death notices, the Department of Motor Vehicles, the USPS, notices from other states, registrations in
Some voters look like duplicates, but are actually two separate people with the same names and birthdate. Absentee voting has been enshrined in our state constitution since 1932. Mailing absentee ballots for the Aug. 11 primaries will save a step for the voter by not requiring every active registered Democrat or Republican to request an absentee ballot, since the SOTS will send an application form to every eligible voter. After that, the usual process takes place. The voter fills out the form and returns the application. The Town Clerk verifies the voter’s credentials and arranges for the correct absentee ballot to be mailed to the voter. The voter then fills out the ballot and returns it, according to directions, by Aug. 11.
to prove who they are and that they live in town before they are reinstated to vote. Ms. Szynkowicz does not distinguish between a voting list and an official voting list for an election. For example, when the SOTS sends out absentee ballot applications to all eligible voters, by definition, that does not include ineligible ones. Seventeen-year-olds who will turn 18 before Nov. 3 are allowed to vote in the primaries on Aug. 11 under the state constitution. Other 17year-olds do not appear on the official voting list and will not be sent applications. Not all data that looks like a mistake is a mistake. For example, voters often tell me, “I’ve lived at this address for 10 years. That person doesn’t live there.” If an American voter lives over-
Every year, according to state and federal law, registrars must contact voters to determine if voters have moved out of town. Here in Connecticut, if a voter does not return the mailing, we do not take away their Constitutional right to vote because they did not return a notice from their town. Instead, we put them on an inactive list. If they try to vote, they have

Is anyone else part of the ‘bump on a log’ gang? I’m afraid I have become a bit of “a bump on a log.” I wouldn’t say I was exactly a ball of fire before, but now I am really just embers. I find that the less I do, the less I want to do. I think it would take a crane to budge me off of my outside lounge chair, which sees me every afternoon, weather permitting, reading a book and drinking green tea. The name says it all – I am meant to lounge. As I have said many times before, I was born for a life of luxury. Well, “luxury” might be a strong word, but these days, it’s close enough. And while I am wiling my afternoons away with a good book, I would not mind one bit if someone would make my supper and bring it out to me. I don’t know who that would be, since I live alone. I doubt if the kitties would be onboard.
Going for walks is taking a bit of a hit. I had planned to take one every day, going further and further. To some extent that has gone the way of mowing the lawn. It is not every day, and the distance is shorter and shorter. I am in-tune with my body, I tell myself, as it whispers to me that it just wants to rest. Yeah, let’s go with that. It sounds so enlightened. My friends tell me they have this project and that, most of which involves cleaning of some sort. I knew that was never going to fly. I don’t kid

Local nonprofits are facing fundraising challenges By Bailey Wright Record-Journal staff
Local nonprofits are looking into alternative fundraising after pandemic restrictions forced them to cancel most annual events. Last week After the Storm, Inc. announced the 12th annual Art Bra event, scheduled for Aug. 6 at the Aqua Turf Club in Southington, was canceled. “We erred on the side of caution and looked at all aspects involved. We’re still
looking for ways to help survivors,” founder Christine Willett said. Over the past decade, the event has raised more than $350,000 for local hospitals to provide integrative medicine for cancer survivors, since therapies like yoga, Reiki and massage are not usually covered by insurance.
“It’s not fair to hold an event that (survivors) probably won’t be able to go to,” she said. Nonprofits also have to take into account that the businesses and individuals who normally donate may not be financially able to any time soon.
Willett said organizers are looking into other, probably Because cancer survivors are virtual, events to stay enimmuno-compromised, gaged. The efforts will be anmost wouldn’t have been nounced on the After the able to attend the event, Wil- Storm Facebook page. lett said. People can donate on the

The Meriden Lions Club’s annual Duck Race on June 3 is likely canceled, said Jim Moran, event chairman. He said the club board would meet over the weekend to make a final decision. The Duck Race brought 800 to 1,000 people to the Green last year to watch rubber ducks “race” down Harbor Brook. Although the race could be held without spectators, Moran said ticket sales are what drive the fundraiser. The money raised by each of the $5 ducks is put back into the community through projects, donations to charitable organizations and scholarships. In a typical year, the event raises $60,000 to $80,000. Moran said the duck race isn’t the only club fundraiser affected by the pandemic.

A few of their smaller ones — a Palm Sunday brunch and a pasta dinner — were canceled and now they’re facing the prospect of canceling the biggest one of the year, the annual golf tournament in September. Moran said the tournament usually brings in more than $100,000.

“That’s gonna be a big hit … it’s a lot of money,” he said.
The club recently donated $5,000 each to five local food banks to help them purchase more food for the hundreds of residents without jobs due to the pandemic. Moran is unsure what the club will do to make up for lost funds. The Meriden-New BritainBerlin YMCA’s annual Martini and Massage Charity Benefit has been postponed this year. It was scheduled for June 6 at the Augusta Curtis Cultural Center. YMCA leadership could not be reached for comment. Relay for Life would normally be holding its northeastern walks this time of year, but is exploring other options. The national organization held a country-wide virtual walk at the end of April, but local organizers are now planning a 12-hour event on Sept. 19 that they say is tentative. Meriden’s annual PurpleStride for pancreatic cancer is still scheduled for June 20, but will be a virtual event. Seniors
Obituaries George M. Eames, III DURHAM- George M. Eames III, 94, of Durham, passed away peacefully on Thursday May 21, 2020, with his family by his side. He was the beloved husband for 73 years to Lee Eames. George was born on November 19, 1925 in Fairfield, CT. He was the only child of the late George M. Eames Jr. and Alice (Adams) Eames. A 67-year resident of Durham, George graduated from the University of New Haven in 1946. Upon graduation, George took a position in the Controller’s Office at Yale University. George moved to Durham in 1953 when he took the position of Treasurer for Durham Manufacturing Company. Forty-seven years later George retired from Durham Manufacturing, having risen through the ranks to become President, Vice Chairman of the Board and CEO of the company. It was after his retirement, at the young age of 72, that George began the golfing phase of his life. He loved getting out on the golf course at least twice a week with his pals Norm Jason, Jack Stahl and Jim McLaughlin. After each round he would relive “the shot of the day”- be it a long drive, a 60-foot putt, or that one perfect approach shot to anyone that he even remotely happened to cross paths with. Aside from his family, George’s greatest passion was found within the community where he lived. Some of his community involvement included being Durham’s Tax Collector; Chair of the Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce (Middlesex County Distinguished Citizen Award winner for 1990); President of the Durham
Exchange Club; Chairman of the Middlesex Preservation Trust; Chairman of Durham Division of the United Way; Director of the Durham Fair Association; Director of Boy Scouts Troop 27; Chairman of the Durham Mental Health Association; Chairman of the Durham Planning and Zoning Commission; Treasurer of the Durham Republican Town Committee; Director of Community Action for Greater Middletown; Board Member of Middlesex Community College; Chairman of the Middlesex County Manufacturing Association; Chairman of Midstate Regional Planning Agency; Director of City Savings Bank; and Director of the Community Banking Corporation (CBC). George was also a member of two Durham school building committees and one regional school district building committee, as well as a member of two Durham Library building committees. Of all his community involvement and area memberships, his fondest was his membership with the United Churches of Durham, where he served as both a trustee and as the church moderator for many years. But George was also active outside the
community. As his children came of age, George and Lee were able to travel the world together. Their first trip outside of the U.S. was a trip to Spain that was gifted to them by their grateful children. The memories of their many national and international trips would always bring a smile to his face as well as a favorite story. He would speak of having a custommade suit tailored in Hong Kong from the very same tailor that George Bush Sr. would buy his suits from; or the time he got lost traveling through a (closed) road over a mountain of volcanic rock in Hawaii. Aside from his wife Lee, George is survived by his son Alan Higby Eames and his wife Cheri of Durham, CT; his daughters Deborah Eames Wilbur and her husband David of Brewster, MA; Pamela Eames Sexton and her husband Keith of Cotuit, MA; and his son George Manson Eames IV of Durham, CT. George is also survived by eight grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren. A gentleman to the end, George’s final two words on this earth were his familiar phrase “thank you”. A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family with the Reverend Jeanette Hicks of the United Churches of Durham officiating. A memorial service will be held at a later date when the restrictions on mass gatherings are lifted. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations would be greatly appreciated in George’s name to the United Churches of Durham, 228 Main Street, Durham CT 06422. Oh, here’s something I actually got off my lounge chair and did. I dug out a small garden, went to Natureworks to buy a few veggie plants, came home and plopped them into the ground. It’s a small garden, because one does not wish to have to do a lot of weeding. But hey, it’s something. Again, so proud. I have, in my more ambi-

emojis that show the world how I am feeling in that moment. (I am not sure that the world would have the slightest interest in knowing.) Actually, I think I would just stick with the smiley face. Wouldn’t it be awesome if all we saw were people with smiley face masks? I think it would. And people would always think I was in a good mood. Maybe we could pin our name tags to our masks so that we would know a friend when we see one.

I have been confounded in how to reply to Ms Synkowicz’s opinion piece. Despite not having her “investigation” before me, I have tried to respond to some of her claims. I have been told that none of her complaints to the State Election Enforcement Commission have ever been found to be valid. If she wants to actually fix the system, she should contact the registrars so that we can correct any problems she has found.
