Loss of a legend
Local cemetery plays key part in ‘Nuri’ run
Former CRHS coach Economopoulos dies By Sean Krofssik Record-Journal staff
“E Chiamamulu Paisanu! Primu Diu E Sammastianu!”
WALLINGFORD — The area lost one of its all-time coaching greats last week when Wallingford’s Nick Economopoulos passed away at age 72.
The Italian phrase, which translates to “He’s one of our own. First God and then Saint Sebastian,” was heard once again, loud and clear, on the streets of Middlefield and Middletown on May 15.
Economopoulos spent 20 years coaching the Lyman Hall girls basketball team and oversaw five state championship appearances in his tenure, which spanned from 1974 to 1993.

The “I Nuri Run” starts at St. Sebastian’s Cemetery in Middlefield en route to St. Sebastian’s Church in Middletown. This year, more than 350 “runners” from Connecticut and beyond made the trek, an important component of the annual St. Sebastian’s feast. This was the first time the gathering was held since 2019. It was called off in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID.

Don’t neglect septic tank upkeep Getting your home ready for warm weather often comes with a litany of tasks. At the top of the “to do” list might be prepping the lawn mower, or pulling gardening items out of the shed. What’s at the bottom of the list — if it’s there at all? Checking on your septic tank system. If your home has a septic tank, not municipal water and sewer, it would be wise to read on.
Watery waste — effluent — fills most of the septic tank, and a layer of sludge composed of inorganic solids and the byproducts of bacterial digestion falls to the bottom. Also, a layer of scum primarily made up of fats, greases and oils floats to the top.
Also, avoid running back-toback laundry loads that use bleach, and don’t use more bleach than necessary.

MERIDEN — The city has so far received more than $36.58 million in requests to fund projects with COVID-19 relief funds made available through the American Rescue Plan Act. That total already surpasses the close to $36.36 million in funding the city is scheduled to receive through the federal program. The more than three dozen funding applications that have been submitted to date include several requests from city departments for infrastructure repair and upgrades.
