She operated her antique business “The Collector’s Loft” both at antique shows as well as two local shops. Brown, and her daughter-in-law Patricia Sattler Brayshaw. Due to the present circumstances of social distancing, the family will hold private graveside services with a celebration of her life to be arranged for a later date. Vote OK’s draft regs for farm breweries, wineries The Durham Planning and Zoning Commission recently voted in favor of a draft regulation allowing farm breweries, wineries, cideries and distilleries to operate in town.

The PZC voted 8 to 1 in favor of the draft on May 20. A final PZC vote on the new rules is expected this month. PZC member Joseph Pasquale voted against the change, citing language issues with the draft. “I have legal concerns that it allows an applicant to come in ... that has no agricultural activity on a property,” he said.
According to the proposed draft, the new regulation would allow for agricultural operations to provide tours, tastings, other events, farm cafes and retail sale and wholesale of products grown or manufactured on the premises.

Editor : It must be nice to be part of Regional District 13 and work there. You don't even have to go to work in the morning, and you are getting a pay raise. Some animals are more equal than others. Thirty-five million people have lost their jobs over an overblown communist virus,

Let’s stop taking life’s simple pleasures for granted I know it’s stating the obvious, that our lives have changed drastically, in ways both large and small. That being said, let me, if I may, give you a glimpse into life at 319 Madison Road.
and I must just make-do until social distancing is a thing of the past. So there’s no light to speak of to aid me in my cooking adventures. Heaven only knows what I have been concocting.
granted. I have stashed this coveted treasure in my dryer, lest a mouse, as he has done in the past, thinks that shredding it would make for a lovely pastime. Shhhhhh, I’m hiding it. One glorious 12-pack!
I am finding that I am more able to ferret out what is really important and what is just a minor inconvenience. Here’s an example. The switch on the hood over my stove often goes “on the blink,” and my kind neighbor always replaces it for me. It happened again,
It used to bother me, this cooking-in-the-dark thing, until I could get it fixed. But I pay it no mind. You might not, however, want to come to dinner in the foreseeable future!
Amazon has been hearing a lot from me lately. I’ve gotten quite used to not getting off the couch, so they fit in quite nicely with my current lifestyle.

Another bonus – I’m spending less money because no browsing in a store means no impulse shopping.
I have always been interested in natural health, but now it is more of a priority than ever. I’m vegan, and I always eat organic, which may sound healthy, but I’ve known, for some time now, that I could do a lot better. I’m loading up on fruits and veggies. I even ordered a juicer off of Amazon (of course!) in my drive to keep my immune system in tip-top shape.
how many fruits and veggies you need in order to yield a cup of juice. It looks like this will be taking up a good portion of my day. I realize that I am more sociable than I thought. I always figured, loner that I am, that I would do quite well living out in the woods somewhere, living off the land, with nothing but the squirrels for company. I would not do well, I now know. I miss people. I don’t think I will ever take simple pleasures for granted again. I am aware of what a gift it is to take the next easy breath. And in a world that feels crazy to me right now, I treasure the moments of peace. Sitting in my back-

COMMENTARY
An unforgettable journey through the Great Swamp By Brendan Rea
What started out as a simple kayak mission – retrieving a fishing lure that was caught in the brush on the opposite river bank near the New Haven Road Bridge in Durham – ended up being a journey north on the Coginchaug River. I knew that the swamp was difficult to traverse, but I figured I would do a little bit of exploring, as I was already in the water and the trek started out with ease. I thought to myself, I had always wanted to kayak the length of my hometown river, and why not knock a section of this off the bucket list. I would just see how it goes. It was a beautiful 60-degree day, partly cloudy in April. I had a pair of chest waders on so I knew I could pull the kayak through any
tough spots. It wasn’t that big of an area. Plus, I had my compass on my cell phone. What could go wrong? The first 150 yards were magnificent. I had to do the limbo under a couple of low hanging branches, I found a few more lures dangling like Christmas tree ornaments that other fishermen had lost in the brush. And I was the unexpected guest of a great blue heron that took flight as I approached. Every time I see one of these majestic birds I always think of pterodactyls.
water flow became more difficult, aware that two other separate brooks, Cream Pot Brook and Parmelee Brook, were relatively close and their confluence with The Coginchaug was just a little further downstream. The whole area had just become a shallow pond, probably 100 acres or more that I could see. At this point I had to get off of the kayak and start to pull it over certain pieces of high ground. I knew that I was off track of the main river and I contemplated turning back.
It was as if I slipped into a natural wonderland.
In hindsight this would have been the prudent thing to do.
I entered the center of the Durham Meadows and realized rather quickly that the beaver had the area dammed up to the point where it was difficult to discern where the main body of the river was. Looking for a

depth of the water was shifting with every step from knee deep to chest deep. Several times my boots got caught in the mud to the point where I almost had to leave them behind. But I have been through this before, so I made sure that with every step I either had a sapling or tree that I could grab onto. And if they were unavailable, I placed the kayak in a place where I could bear weight on its buoyancy. Thinking about backtracking continued in my mind and the journey thus far had me tired and soaked in sweat. I was not quite to the halfway point and I was actually thinking that I would get through the beaver habitat and be able to find the river again.

The beaver lair looked like it was done in the fall and I saw evidence of trapping. While I was thinking that the situation I was in was pretty daunting, whoever was in here trapping during the cold months when beaver fur is in its prime is a heartier soul than I. I felt quite out of breath. This was probably the most strenuous workout I had in several years. How did I let myself get so out of shape? I started thinking about how awful it would be if I had a heart attack in the middle of this swamp. Thankfully, it was mid-day and I had plenty of time to get out of the mess I had gotten myself into. I decided just to slow down and methodically continue my course. The last time I had gotten myself into a similar predicament was many years ago. I was in my late

20s and duck hunting on the Menunketesuck River, which is a tidal river in the shoreline town of Westbrook. It was an extremely cold winter day and an unusually low full moon tide had left us stranded upstream. Unlike that cold winter day, late April days are longer, warmer and I knew I had plenty of daylight. I took a deep breath, drank some water and decided to slow down and enjoy my surroundings knowing this would be the last time I would attempt this and the last time I would be able to enjoy the beauty of this swamp. The slower pace made it a more pleasant – yet still arduous – process that at one point had me laying prone on my kayak so I could duck under the low branches. At another point, when I was dragging the kayak the paddle had slipped off. Luckily it was only 30 or 40 yards behind me and I was able to retrieve it and continue. But this 20-minute setback I could’ve done without. Beaver, they are an amazing creature, they cause so much property damage and flooding yet this does not take away from the miracle of what they can accomplish. I looked in awe at the field of trees the beaver had taken down with symmetrical precision. I began to think that a human with a hatchet would be unable to duplicate this precise handiwork.
rolling my eyes – their art certainly deserves a place in one. The flooded marsh that these industrious creatures fashioned for their own habitat and survival created a beautiful wooded pond area with little clumps of grass sticking out here and there. The skunk cabbage was starting to grow and a field of yellow marsh marigolds created a real pop to the eye.
became part of the landscape I realized this was actually a perfect day to be stuck in the mud. That said, I was also pretty thankful that Connecticut doesn’t have alligators. At this point I was pulling my kayak more than sitting on it, and when I was taking one of my many breaks, I sat and wondered if the beaver ever took pause to admire the magnificence of the pond it created.
After I slowed my pace and

After my break and trudging along further through the quagmire, I ended up finding some open water and got pretty excited. I actually sat in the kayak properly, started to paddle and felt a flow downstream. I was thinking I was out of the woods (pun intended).

I made a poor decision to try to accomplish something without the proper equipment. So, unfortunately, like a moron, I did not bring an actual compass. I was relying on my cell phone. This is a mistake I’ve made before and swore I would never do again.
Luckily for me, it was a sunny day. I was aware of where I was and the direction that I was heading. Using the sun, I could keep my bearings. So Once again, I was quietly slipping through the swamp. I made the decision to head towards Greenbacker’s farm I’m sure the inhabitants field. I had enough of the were unfamiliar with human intrusion, at least during this quagmire. My cell phone battery was low because I was using an app to track my journey; a mistake I will not make again. I was really cruising, so I decided to make a call and let my brother-in-law Jeff, with whom I had prearranged picking me up when I finished this “short” journey, that I should be at the bridge shortly.
Then I saw the field. As heavy as the kayak felt, seeing the field gave me a burst of energy.
This phone call was followed up by hitting more of the same quagmire, so with a quick follow-up call, I let Jeff know I would be longer than I thought. I informed him that I would be turning my phone off because the app I had running was draining my battery.
I knew it was a huge field, but it was never as big as when I looked at it dragging a kayak, and saw how wet the recently harrowed field was and knew that I couldn’t drive a pickup truck to where I was.
My phone would not power back up after that.
I dragged the kayak to the back of the field, pulled it over a stone wall and stood there, amazed at how huge this field was. I knew it was a big field because I had parked cars in it for the Durham Fair many times.
The journey was not quite over. I still had to get my kayak across that field, and See Rea, A21

Bikers From A1
“I feel very safe as far as everything they’ve done,” he said. Alix, who has been coming to Powder Ridge for years for skiing, snowboarding and mountain biking, said the bike trails have been improving every year and are on par with any of the other bike parks in New England. Like most biking areas in the region, he said it’s known for having rocky, technical trails — though they’ve been adding more moderate routes as well. He enjoys the challenge of navigating the trails for physical fitness and as a mental outlet.

He also hopes to see games like horseshoes, corn hole and giant jenga resume. Kelly Celio, of Hebron, said she was glad to be able to bring her kids out mountain biking. They were set to join a bike team this summer, however it was canceled due to the pandemic. Though the crowds were larger than she expected, Celio still felt comfortable with the spacing between the tables and the social distancing for the line to go up the ski lift — particularly since most bikers have helmets with built-in visors.

When you live in Durham and Middlefield you’re inundated with the word “Coginchaug.” When I was going to Coginchaug High School in the mid-80s I learned that the word was Native American for Great Swamp.

Finally, I got to the end of the field and saw that I would be able to get a truck to the kayak. I dropped down in the field and laid on my back. I thanked the sun for being out today, and I thought about my friend Hank, whose ashes are spread in the meadow adjacent to the river. Watching my kayaking adventure, Hank would have had a good laugh at my expense.
