Plenty of fireworks options to pick from
SUMMER CONCERT SERIES
Middletown's annual fireworks festival has been delayed until September, but there are several local options for celebrating Independence Day the traditional way.
July 2 Meriden – Fireworks are returning to Castle Craig. When the sun sets, families and friends can gather at Hubbard Park to view the show. Sidelined in 2020 due to COVID-19, the Summer Concert Series has returned to Allyn Brook Park. The free concerts are held Thursdays, 6 to 8 p.m. Photos by Nadya Korytnikova

Durham’s Recreation Department and the local Lions Club have partnered for the 2021 Summer Concert Series. This 30-year-old tradition comes after the cancellation of the free, outdoor series last summer due to the pandemic.

“It’s a wonderful community event, and there are different types of music each week, so hopefully it will be able to appeal to different genres and ages,” said Luke Backus of the Durham Lions Club. The concert series is held at Allyn Brook Park, located off Picket Lane. The concerts run every Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. through Aug. 5. “It’s one of my best days of the week,” said Recreation Director Sherry Hill. “Just a nice place to come down, be with your family, listen to some nice music, get a hot

I can’t master Minecraft .. yet. Like the growth mindset, the Durham Middlefield Local Wellness Coalition’s latest initiative reminds us that we can work toward our goals one step at a time. Or perhaps one letter at a time.
The work has a tentative start date of Thursday, July 15. Minor delays in traffic are to be expected. On-street parking will not be permitted. Vehicles which hamper the operation will be towed at the owner’s expense. Also, do not allow any water to enter the roadway as this will cause the chip seal to fail prematurely. After the application, there will be excess loose stone that can be hazard to motorists if they exceed the temporary 15 M.P.H. speed limit that will be posted. The June 12 celebration was held just over a week after the Durham Board of Selectmen passed a proclamation designating June as Gay Pride Month. “We gathered together joined by fellow citizens, local leaders and members of the greater LGBTQIA+ community to share the spirit of the Pride movement,” said Bob Donahue, chairman of the town’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee. “It was beyond spiritlifting to see so many different people of so many different backgrounds all coming together to learn, to share, to embrace, to sing, to dance, to accept, and to love.”

QUITE A SIGHT
Obituaries John Edward West DURHAM- John Edward West, 67, of Durham, passed away on June 21, 2021, in the company of his loving wife, Chris. John was visited, entertained, phone called and surrounded by many dear friends and family members at the Comfort Care Unit at Middlesex Hospital and for months preceding his admission there. Each one of his friends and family meant the world to him. Born in Middletown, he was the son of the late John Henry and Barbara Jean West. He graduated in the second graduating class of Coginchaug Regional High School in 1972. John was a true artist. The media he most often used to show his talents were his carpentry skills, his music and his photography. He worked as a cabinet maker and finish carpenter. He played the guitar, harmonica, piano and drums. John could make percussion out of any household item that was handy if impromptu music came up at a party. He formally played guitar in local bands, Heartland, and more recently, CJ West and The Downtown Train. He did plenty of informal ‘horsing around’ with the Players Night Irregulars. He sang with the Notre Dame Folk Group for about twenty years. John loved the beach,
nature and the beauty of the world. He loved fishing and water sports. Block Island was his favorite place to be. John captured his love of nature with photography. He was a long-time committee member of the photography department at The Durham Fair. Besides John’s artistic aspects, he was very talented with many other things. His friends called him “The Wizard”, “because of the wonderful things he does.” He could fix a car, replace a window, build a piece of furniture, troubleshoot a computer, cook a great meal, build a boogie-board, teach a cat how to bark, make a key for a locked case out of a broken screw driver and practically anything else that came his way. Besides his loving wife of 40 years, Christine Satagaj West, John leaves his three adoring cats, his sister, Lorrie Martin and her husband, Bill, of Durham,
and his sister Elaine Woodard and her husband Craig, of Missouri. He leaves his best friend and cousin, Mark Pagano, of Virginia, to carry on the shenanigans. He also leaves his nephews Nathan Woodard (Laura), Daniel Woodard and Geoffrey Martin (Kate), and his niece Samantha Satagaj, as well as many, many dear friends. In lieu of flowers, donations in John’s memory may be made to Cat Tales of Connecticut at http://cattalesct.org/ donate/. John’s family gives heartfelt thanks to the wonderful and very caring nurses and staff on the Comfort Care Unit. John’s family received relatives and friends at the Doolittle Funeral Home, 14 Old Church Street, Middletown, CT, on Sunday, June 27th from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial was held the next morning, Monday, June 28th at 10:00 am at Notre Dame Church, 272 Main Street, Durham, CT, where Our Lady of Mercy Parish live streamed the service at https://www.youtube. com/channel/ UCOhZP xlu3W124CpRaIfGAig. Interment followed in Mica Hill Cemetery, Mica Hill Road, Durham, CT. For online condolences and information, please visit www. doolittlefuneralservice. com.

The days are getting shorter; soak up that sunshine Dear Diana, I received your letter. Thank you so much. I love getting mail. These days everyone wants to text, and as you might guess, I have no fingers with which to do so. You’re not alone, my dear. Most people are so excited to see me when I arrive on the scene, but then
get used to me in short order, like I will stick around forever. But come August there is a turn of events. August brings a bit of wistfulness to most of you. You know the days are numbered. And I know it never helps when people remind you that September can be lovely. You know, in your heart, that it is the beginning of the end.
Truth be told, I myself would like to stick around a bit longer. I love seeing everyone so happy. The children seem to especially enjoy me. But I must not be piggish. Autumn is always waiting patiently in the wings. And she really is a darling, so I want to give her a turn. And to the point, I have noticed that you are enjoying these mellow days.
It makes me happy. Nobody likes to be taken for granted. I see how much you enjoy the sunlight when you get out of bed at 5:00. See Carr, A9

RSD13 educator applauds ‘Right to Read’ legislation Legislation designed to improve grade-school reading curricula across the state — which was voted out of the Committee on Education in the spring but never came to a vote in the House of Representatives — became law as part of the massive budget implementation bill. The legislation, initially dubbed the “Right to Read” act, calls for $12.8 million in spending to ensure that school districts where stu-
dents are falling behind can hire reading coaches. Baked into the Right to Read legislation, despite some pushback from educators and parents during public hearings, is the establishment of a Center for Literacy Research and Reading Success at the state Department of Education that will oversee the reading curriculum for Connecticut students in grades PreK-3.
“There is a proven method for literacy instruction, and we need to use it in all of our Connecticut classrooms. Our students are entitled to it,” Sen. Miller, who shepherded the legislation, lays blame on the state for the thousands of students reaching third grade each year still struggling to read.
“This is the result of Connecticut’s ‘hands-off ’ approach to reading, which has failed to properly train all educators and to require proven, evidence-based practices and programs in every classroom,” Miller claimed. Allen began training teachers in her district to implement literacy practices in the classroom four years ago, after the district noticed an increasing number of kids were qualifying for special education services “mainly with a disability involved with some sort of reading deficit.”
