Alcohol ban back for park
Weekly Fun Runs are back By Nicole Zappone Town Times
DEEP re-imposes temporary rule for Wadsworth Falls
It was a hot summer day when Jennifer Schulten came to Durham 17 years ago. She didn’t know anyone, as she arrived from New York. On her second day, she heard about the Durham Fun Runs.

Ambulance corps honored at concert By Nicole Zappone Town Times
The Durham Volunteer Ambulance Corps was honored for their years of service Thursday, June 30 at the start of the summer concert series at Allyn Brook Park in Durham.
First Selectman Laura Francis, center, in pink, poses with past members of the Durham Volunteer Ambulance Corps at Allyn Brook Park in Durham. Nicole Zappone, Town Times
“Tonight is a very special night because we as a community are going to celebrate some very special people in our community,” First Selectman Laura Francis told the crowd. “These people have served our community as first responders of the ambulance corps.”
Just before the start of summer, the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection re-imposed temporary alcohol bans for seven state recreation areas. Wadsworth Falls State Park, located on the Middletown/ Middlefield line, is on the list. The alcohol ban will stand until Sept. 5. The DEEP said that in recent summers the seven locations listed saw increased crowds and alcohol consumption, leading to increased incidents of unruly behavior, as well as property damage, trespassing and complaints by other visitors. The DEEP said the alcohol ban has helped reduce negative behaviors while making the areas more safe and enjoyable.

Within three weeks, Schulten was inspired to start a year-round running program in the district – Go Far – which has benefited countless children over the years. “Creativity and running is how I built the framework around it,” Schulten said. “The unique formula of goals, exercise, encouragement and reward, all garnished by a large dose of fun, explains the program in a nutshell.”

Schulten explained that, even at age 5, her son Peter had a genuine love for running. Years later, Peter Schulten would compete in college, at the Division I level. And it all started with Fun Runs. R247962
Parks and Recreation Director Sherry Hill invited Peter Schulten to direct the Fun Runs when David Bellemere finished his term.
HELP KEEP
Schulten agreed, and he is now in his second year as director. “The first week of these runs is always a great turnout,” he said. “Every week, the run starts with a kids race, and then it’s the adults.”
