German Shepard is Durham’s Top Dog

WOMEN’S HIKE

By Nicole Zappone Town Times

After a 10-year hiatus, Durham’s Top Dog contest returned this year. And the winner is … Jade. The Top Dog, a 3-year-old German Shepard, belongs to Annmarie Beaudry, and their family includes Jade’s brothers and sisters Cloud, Echo, Holly, Rebel and Winter. The Top Dog was selected at random from the 500-plus pups who were registered with the town in June.

Women of the Woods will embark on an approximately 3-mile hike on Sunday, July 24, at Mica Ledges Preserve in Durham. The group will set off at 5:30 p.m. and visit Whitney Pond, Pyramid Rock and the beautiful ledges. This month’s hike will focus on learning how to read a trail map to avoid getting lost and what to do if you think you are lost or turned around. For additional information and to register, visit EveryoneOutside.org or contact Lucy@EveryoneOutside.org.

“When the town called, I got nervous. Because I knew that I paid all my taxes,” Beaudry joked. “I have people contacting me on Facebook asking if I breed Jade,” she said. The answer to that query is: No.

Letters to the Editor

From A1

Big shoes to fill

Now, we wish her a long and enjoyable retirement.”

Editor : We want to thank Laura Francis for her 30-plus years of service to the Town of Durham. She worked hard to achieve her goals and the goals of our town.

A retirement party was held for Dean on June 28. From the start of her tenure, Dean helped secure funds to support various DMYFS programs and activities. Also, she quickly applied for the Drug-Free Communities grant, which has totaled some $1.25 million over the years. Thanks to the Drug-Free Communities grant, the DMYFS said more than 1,500 youth in Durham and Middlefield have received mental health and substance abuse training, and the communities have reported a significant decrease in risky behaviors.

As our First Selectman, she has worked tirelessly to obtain grants for many projects in Durham. She has attended celebrations, wakes, funerals, plays and concerts for her constituents. She has felt the loss of everyone who has passed from our town whether she knew them or not. She has felt the love for a newborn child she may not have ever met.

“The changes we’ve seen in our schools are wonderful, as our children are taking our messages to heart,” Claudia O’Connell said. “Betsy has worked welll with the RSD13 administration and teachers, as well as other community members, to get their investment in our programs. It’s a tribute to her passion and caring for our community.”

Whoever takes over her position has some mighty big shoes to fill, and we can only hope that he or she will be half the leader Laura Francis has been to Durham. Laura, we wish you the best of luck and success in your new adventure. In the immortal words of Ricky Nelson, “you can’t please everyone, so you got to please yourself.” Now is your time.

Other accomplishments attributed to Dean include the creation of EDGE, a summer internship

Laura has proudly watched thousands of Durham’s children graduate from high school. She has received praise and criticism from satisfied and disgruntled residents. Her job was never a 9-to-5 position. If you do the job right, you take it home with you every single night.

Betsy Dean, center, is pictured with Durham First Selectman Laura Francis and Middlefield First Selectman Bob Yamartino at Dean’s retirement party on June 28.

Being the First Selectman can, sometimes, be a thankless job. There is never a way to please everyone no matter how hard one tries. Because of her attendance at many meetings and seminars throughout the state, Laura has made countless connections, all for the benefit of Durham’s residents.

Annmarie Beaudry poses with Jade, who decides to give her mom a kiss on their front porch in Durham.

gren’s pooch Duncan earned the distinction a decade ago. Brenna was battling leukemia at the time, and would die from the disease.

“I told them all dogs are winners. They have you and have a loving home, so that makes them a winner,” Beaudry said. “I am not prejudiced against any breeds. I “I just didn’t have the heart love all of them.” to hold another Top Dog contest,” said Town Clerk Durham’s Top Dog contest Kim Garvis, who would save had been sidelined since “the No. 1 tag each year” for local girl Brenna ZetterDuncan.

After 10 years, however, Garvis felt the time was right to reintroduce Top Dog. Jade, this year’s winner, earned a gift basket which included the No. 1 tag for 2022-2023, a gift certificate to Brenda’s Main Street Feed, a selection of dog treats and toys, and more. nzappone@record-journal.com 203-317-2212

In late June, members of the Middlefield Volunteer Fire Company participated in advanced water rescue training at Lake Beseck. In a social media post, the local fire company said the training, which took place over two nights, focused on "initial victim rescues" and "provided our members with advanced skills that were utilized in realistic training scenarios to better prepare us for a wide range of water responses." The course was presented by the group Water Training Resources. "We also train with our regional dive team frequently to understand how we can assist in their operations," the fire company stated. "You will likely see us on the lake in the coming weeks as we continue our in-house training."
