Water rate increase proposed By Nadya Korytnikova Town Times

Some Durham residents are facing a water rate increase, the first one in 14 years. The Board of Selectmen held a public meeting recently to discuss new water rates, which have been proposed by the town’s Water Commission. See Rate increase, A3

Sunflower maze marks 25 years of ‘Arthur’ TV show By Faith Williams Record-Journal staff

Over 300,000 sunflowers are set to bloom at Lyman Orchards for the 15th year, bringing families to the only sunflower maze in the state.

This year’s theme celebrates 25 years of “Arthur,” an animated television show on CPTV following Arthur Read, an aardvark and his friends and family. It was announced recently that “Arthur” was canceled and this winter’s broadcast season will be the last.

“During your walk amidst the sunflowers,” the website said, “you’ll see butterflies and yellow finches with the surrounding orchard hills as a beautiful scenic backdrop.” See Lyman, A8

Lawmakers push for updated food labeling On Wednesday, Aug. 4, House Appropriations Committee Chairwoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT), House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ), and Senators Richard Blumenthal (DCT), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) and Ed Markey (DMA) introduced the Food Labeling Modernization Act of 2021 in their respective chambers.

The bill would update frontof-package food labeling requirements, require updates to the ingredient list on packaged foods, and apply consumer friendly labeling requirements. “The Food Labeling Modernization Act will give food labeling requirements an important and long-overdue overhaul,” said DeLauro. “Food labels should give a

clear, accurate, and fair representation of the product, and that is just not the case right now. This commonsense bill would provide more information to consumers—information that is vital as people make choices about what food to buy for their families.” In an effort to help consumers select healthy products, the Food Labeling Modernization Act’s signature initiative will direct the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) to establish a single, standard

front-of-package nutrition labeling system in a timely manner for all food products required to bear nutrition labeling. The bill will also strengthen current law to target trends in marketing that confuse or mislead consumers when they are attempting to compare food products. Specifically, the legislation will require new guidelines for the use of the word “healthy.” “This bill will bring muchneeded clarity to food labels so Americans can make in-

formed, healthy decisions for themselves and their families,” Blumenthal said. “Current labels are a confusing maze and fail to provide important, useful information to consumers. The Food Labeling Modernization Act will ensure serving sizes are updated, allergens are clearly labeled, and nutritional information is transparent, giving people the tools they need to make healthier choices and avoid misleading, deceptive pitches and promotions.” — Press Release

Boating

In Brief

From A6

Kamoen looked around, saw the boat, and headed toward it. The teenager witnessed the 25-foot craft flip over. Two of its occupants were clinging to the boat, two were floating nearby, and the other was trapped beneath the boat. Making this situation even more dire, three of the men in the water were unable to swim. Kamoen and his crew turned off their motor, and carefully scooped up four of the men. There wasn’t enough room for the fifth, but Kamoen and company waited until the Nosals arrived with their boat and pulled the last man out of the water. Obituaries David Alan Lehet DURHAM- David Alan Lehet, 39, of Durham, passed away on July 26, 2021, surrounded by his loving family. David was born on April 8, 1982 in Middletown, CT and was the beloved son of Gina Puglisi and the late Alan Lehet. It’s been said by many that when David was formed, they broke the mold. In his time on this planet David touched the lives of a large lot of people. He was always ready to give the shirt off his back to anyone in need, whether stranger, friend or family, and would do so with gusto. David had many incredible talents. He was an artist who worked with a wide array of materials, a craftsman who put his hands to good use, an outdoorsman who loved fishing, camping, and being in nature, and he was especially talented at making people laugh. Dave loved his family, his friends, and his dogs. He was a hard worker for his entire life who could always be counted on to give one hundred percent of himself. Of everything he brought to this world, he will be missed most for his presence and his ability to make us smile, and to bring what was really important into perspective. It is with heavy hearts that we say good bye for now, and see you soon to our

beloved son, brother, and friend. To quote one of David’s favorite thinkers, “I’ll try to be around and about. But if I’m not, then you know that I’m behind your eyelids, and I’ll meet you there.” David is survived by his devoted mother Gina Puglisi, stepfather Dana Ferrer, siblings Matthew Lehet, Cara Carta, Nathan Ferrer, Aaron Lehet, Adam Cartwright and Alex Cartwright and many family members who loved David dearly. He is preceded by his father Alan Lehet, his grandparents Daniel and Phyllis Lehet, his Uncle Robert Lehet and his aunt Danielle Lehet. All are welcome to attend a celebration of David’s life, to be held on Saturday, August 14th, 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., at the Middlefield Federated Church, 402 Main St., Middlefield, CT.

Families are invited to visit the Middlefield sunflower maze and answer trivia questions to get through to the end. Each answer to the question guides you left or right with all the correct answers posted at the end. Visitors are asked questions like “What is Arthur’s sister, D.W.’s actual name?” and “What instrument does Arthur play?” The maze takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. Becky Critchley, Lyman Orchard’s director of events and catering, said the peak time for the sunflowers to bloom is Aug. 6 to Aug. 20. The maze is popular, especially for maternity and engagement photos. Melissa Uriarte and her family from East Hartford usually visit Lyman Orchards to go fruit picking. They visited the maze on a recent Tuesday morning. “During the summer we try to find things to do outdoors with the kids,” Uriarte said, “We don’t come here every year but we have been here a few times for strawberry and peach picking. We also go to the Apple Barrel.”

One of several varieties of sunflowers in the sunflower maze at Lyman Orchards in Middlefield.

Uriarte’s son Liam Uriarte said the maze was cool and a lot of fun but confusing as the family tried to find their way out. The maze is open daily until Aug. 31, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults, and $6 for children ages 4-12. John Lyman, owner of the orchard, said last year’s sunflower maze was “decent” but he is optimistic going into this year. “We’re looking forward to a really

good year,” Lyman said. “The flowers are looking really good this year. We opened Saturday and so far we’ve had a really good turnout.” Lyman Orchards donates $1 from each admission to Connecticut Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders. The website said Lyman Orchards wants “children battling cancer to reach for the stars and never give up hope.” See Maze, A9

I always save our grocery store plastic bags to use for trash or soiled clothes on a family road trip (or plane ride). It is easier to toss a vomit covered shirt into a plastic bag, tie up the top, and place it on the floor until you get home.

iPad. However, Annabelle can become car sick more quickly when she is staring at a screen, so I have a backpack filled with activities: stickers, coloring books, colored pencils (less messy), Imagine Ink books, a baby doll, Barbies, etc. One item I haven’t purchased yet is a travel activity tray — with pockets and a flat top. It seems genius for kids in carseats.

We took our first long road trip with our daughters recently. It took us 9.5 hours to drive to Ohio and 10 hours to drive back. I would like to say the trip was uneventful, but during the last hour of our drive, Annabelle vomited all over herself, her toys, and her car seat. Thankfully I had plastic bags ready for our oldest, who gets car sick, as well has cleaning wipes.

Lamont last week granted towns and cities the authority to require masks. New Haven’s mandate requires masks be worn inside at businesses, bars, restaurants, and theaters. The latest wave of the virus and misinformation about its spread has prompted Hartford HealthCare to relaunch its COVID-19 hotline, hospital officials said. Officials said the hotline will be staffed by clinicians who can answer questions about masks, vaccinations and anything else related to the pandemic. The officials said they are hoping that presenting the facts and responding to concerns will lead to higher vaccination rates. “We’re seeing the percentage remains 95 to 99% of the individuals needing critical care, needing ventilators are individuals who have not been vaccinated,” said Keith Grant, Hartford HealthCare’s senior system director of infection prevention.
