“CTDOL does not do claims work over text or on social media platforms. We do not verify identity through text or on social media. We do not ask for account informa tion or personal identifying information on text or social media," Bartolomeo said.

Connecticut Department of Labor Commissioner Danté Bartolomeo is warning resi dents of another text scam; this one tells filers to verify their identity in order to process their unemploy ment payment. The text appears to be a message from ReEmployCT but sends users to a ".net" address to verify their infor mation. The agency does not do claims work through text or social media. As is true for other scams, CTDOL expects variations of this text message to prolifer ate. CTDOL warns residents not to click on these links.

Ryan has alluded to the fact that Hayden can be stub born. Kudos, my boy! He knows what he is about, and nothing seems to veer him away from that. It sounds like he does not stand out in his schoolwork, but I believe that is because if he doesn’t see the point of something, or its usefulness, he does not put a lot of effort into it. For the record, he is excep tionally smart. (Do I sound like a bragging grandma?) The things he came out with when he was only 2 would knock your socks off. I don’t think he always shows peo ple just how intelligent he is. And he loves animals, with a passion. Not many people are as over-the-moon about animals as I am, but he is. When Ryan and I do Face time, Hayden is always cud dling something or other his rabbit, the dog, one of their three cats. His is a spirit that needs to be uncorked and allowed to roam. It is amazing how I feel so connected, beyond the blood connection, to someone I barely know. So yes, I do feel a bit sad that I am not there to share Hay den’s birthday with him. But then I remember, the heart knows no time or distance. I am with you in spirit, my precious grandson. Always.

A grandmother’s love knows no bounds

My Swedish grandson, Hay den, turned 12 on Aug. 18. Birthdays always have me reminiscing about the per son, and how glad I am that they decided to show up on this planet. And though years and many miles sepa rate us, I can say, with a fair amount of certainty, that that boy and I are cut from the same cloth. For one thing, he is crazy in love with crystals, like his grandma. It makes shopping for him for Christmas and his birthday a slam dunk. When he was younger he called them his magic rocks and would hold them while playing his video games. Now he says they give him power. They do. And this can bring a tear to my eye. My son, Ryan, said that he’ll hold one of the crystals and say, “Just think. Grandma held this.” He’s a fan of Buddha, too; again, like me. I have several Buddhas in my house, and I always pack one of them in Hayden’s box of crystals. Ryan says he keeps it next to his bed. Me, too. Those Bud dhas are “our thing.” I haven’t seen him in-person since he was 4, but I feel like I know him well. I think he’sa free spirit, which might drive the people around him a tad crazy. But it wouldn’t me. I admire it. I feel that if we lived close to each other we would really “get” each other.

MIDDLEFIELD- Robert Wilder Brown, Sr., 98, husband of 70 years to the late Etta S. Brown, died peacefully on Friday, August 12, 2022 at Middlesex Hospital. Born in Middlefield on July 10, 1924, he was the son of the late Wilder Cleveland Brown and Ann Leining Peckham Brown. Robert, known to most as Bob and to some as “Ike” from “Mike and Ike”, resided most of his long life in Middlefield and graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1943. He entered military service and was a combat veteran of WWII having served with the US Army, 263 Infantry Reg, 66th Infantry Div. in northern France. After service in the Army, he used the GI bill to become a commercial pilot and certified flight instructor. Robert served as a commercial pilot for a small local airline for several years. Flying was his life’s passion. He was a flight instructor for over 70 years. Robert was flying aircraft into his early 90’s, mostly on Sunday mornings with his nephews Jon and Rob at Meriden Markham Airport. He was a man of many talents. In his younger years he played drums in a local band, and he built his house from a mail order kit which came delivered to the Middlefield railroad station on a flatbed railroad car. He also enjoyed making pizza and franks and beans for his young family on the weekends. Robert was employed by Pratt & Whitney Aircraft for 33 years, retiring in 1989. He was well-known for his sense of humor and easy-going personality to the many establishments along RT-17 in Durham and Middletown who treated him with kindness over the years, which the family appreciates. To those who were entertained by Dad’s stories and who participated in his “radio program”, he says “Thank You, Thank You, Thank You”.Robert is survived by his daughter, Patrice (James Flaherty); his sons, Curt, Robert Jr. (Kris) and Peter (Jennifer); his grandchildren, Tyler Brown and Caitlin Brown; and his pleaseVeterans.tomemorycontributionsinmilitaryCT88&23rdheldandandIrmaEricpredeceasedandniecesisLennongreat-grandchildren,andAbbey.Healsosurvivedbymanyandnephews.Inadditiontohiswifeparents,Robertwasbyhisson,P.Brown;hissisters,Morse,MarianDoaneLynetteBrayshaw;hisbrother,Alan.FuneralserviceswereonTuesday,AugustattheJohnJ.FerrySonsFuneralHome,E.MainSt.,Meriden,06450.BurialwithhonorswereheldMiddlefieldCemetery.Inlieuofflowers,inRobert’smaybemadeDisabledAmericanwww.dav.orgForonlinecondolences,visitjferryfh.com.
