CRHS welcomes its new assistant principal Katherine Trainer is Coginchaug Regional High School’s new assistant principal, and was set to start work today, Aug. 27. Trainer comes to CRHS from North Branford High School, where she served as Director of Bands and Dean of Students. Also, she was K-12 Music Department Leader for the North Branford school district.
Above, a remembrance ceremony marking the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks will take place on the Durham Town Green Saturday, Sept. 11, at 6 p.m., rain or shine. All are welcome. On Sept. 11, 2001, two hijacked planes were flown into the twin towers at the World Trade Center in New York City, another crashed in a field in Pennsylvania – Flight 93 – and a fourth slammed into the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. More than 3,000 people were killed in the attacks, which resulted in the United States going to war in both Iraq and Afghanistan. At right, this 9/11 memorial in Middlefield contains portions of the North Tower, one of the World Trade Center buildings attacked on Sept. 11, 2001.
In a post to ParentSquare, RSD13 Superintendent Doug Schuch shared that Trainer was selected from among 119 applicants for the assistant principal job. See Trainer, A3

Mice have been showing up, in one way or another, for years. They crawl into the air conditioner, which is really not a problem for me because I never use it. I like open windows. But, much to my dismay, they also like to nestle into the air vents, which I do like to use, for my cooling-off pleasure. I know they are there because the smell is beyond horrible. So I immediately turn the air off. Obviously the little darlings met their demise and now they are stuck there forever, until they disintegrate and return to Mouse Heaven. (I know. Gross!) I don’t know why they are so eager to suck up the cool air. If you ask me, they are going
This roosting in my car comes full circle. This is a year-round affair. Because the heating vent, or whatever it is called, also serves as their haven during the winter. Well, it’s not a haven for long, since their bodies and spirits soon go their separate ways. The smell will take you down to your knees. My former mechanic said there really is nothing we can do about it, just wait for their disintegration. (Again, oooh!) So I drive around for a good part of the winter almost holding my breath. At least I understand this one better than the air vent fiasco. They are looking for warmth during our cold Connecticut months. And word may have gotten out that it would not be the best of ideas to wiggle their way into my house, as two cats reside there, and mice would have a short shelf life. Well, kitty Shiloh would get on the job right away. Kitty Dakota couldn’t care less. Her mouse-chasing days seem to be behind her. Now she just wants to rest. I hear ya, sister.
We go back a long way, these mice and me. One time while I was driving I saw a mouse scoot up my windshield and onto the roof. When I was stopped at a red light the man in the car next to me shouted through his window, “Do you know that you have a mouse on your roof?” Believe me, I knew. I was afraid to get out of the car, lest the beast pole-vault onto my head. He must have had some really good traction to survive that drive to Guilford. Maybe he was wearing cleats. I can just picture him “hanging ten,” with the wind ruffling his fur, his little ears flattened against his head, yelling “Yee ha!”

Mice just seem to love my car. Apparently, for them it’s a five-star hotel. Their calling card has shown up in the unlikeliest places. For instance, my glove compartment. When I opened it up the other day I found the paper towel I had in there shredded to pieces. And I know I didn’t do it. Did they just want to come along for the ride, and thought the glove compartment would be a lovely spot in which to plunk down? Well, I hope they buckled in, it being the law and all.
Some of these varmints, in years past, really made themselves at home in my various vehicles. They built a nest. They figured the winter is long and they are in for the long haul, so why not just settle in.

State says residents can again feed birds
The Department of Energy
and Environmental Protection cited “a considerable decrease in dead birds as of mid-August” and the “increasing dispersal of birds” at this time of year in the state. DEEP, which previously reported three birds with the condition were found dead in Connecticut, said the cause has not yet been determined.
Both the state agency and the Connecticut Audubon Society urged residents to be vigilant about cleaning feeders and bird baths with soap and water at least once a week and then disinfecting them with a 10 percent bleach solution to prevent potential spread of infectious disease. Feeders and bird baths should be rinsed well after cleaning and allowed to air-dry. Residents are also urged to remove any spilled feed from underneath their feeders.
Reported symptoms of the illness have included eye swelling and crusty discharge, as well as neurological signs such as head tremors, weakened leg muscles, the inability to stand, and excessive vocalizations. DEEP said the majority of birds reported to have the affliction have been fledgling common grackles, blue jays, European starlings and American robins. Other species of songbirds have also been reported.

of our community,” committee chair Bob Donahue stated. “We are hopeful that this will bring some joy and recognition for a segment of the community that often goes unacknowledged and unrecognized.” The celebration will take place during the Thursday, Sept. 9 Farmers Market on the Durham Town Green. The Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee will have a set-up including arts
and crafts, informational brochures, and special giveaways. Market Master Jon Scagnelli welcomed the Grandparents Day concept, and thanked the committee for proposing it. “Durham Farmers Market is a community event. It’s for everybody. We’d love to collaborate with different committees at any given time,” said Scagnelli. “It can be a really fun afternoon for everybody.”

National Grandparents Day, recognized each year the Sunday after Labor Day, was first celebrated in 1979. “Grandparents are our continuing tie to the near-past, to the events and beliefs and experiences that so strongly affect our lives and the world around us,” then-President Jimmy Carter stated. “Whether they are our own or surrogate grandparents who fill some of the gaps in our mobile society, our senior generation also provides our society a link to our national heritage and traditions … I urge all Americans to take the time to honor their own grandparents or those in their community.” This year, National Grandparents Day falls on Sunday, Sept. 12. nkorytnikova@ record-journal.com 203-317-2444 Twitter: @n_korytnikova

Data shows state becoming more diverse HARTFORD (AP) — While the majority of Connecticut residents are white, new U.S. Census data released this month shows the state is becoming more diverse, with the number of Hispanic residents having grown by approximately 30% over the last decade.
director of Common Cause of Connecticut, said the numbers show the importance of getting racially diverse input into the state’s redistricting process, which will rely on the new Census data when it works to redraw congressional and state legislative district lines.
The state’s Hispanic population increased by 144,206 people from 2010 to 2020, while the white population declined by 377,282. There were increases in the number of people of mixed race, Asian, Black, native American and Hawaiian and Pacific Islander descent in Connecticut as well.
“We need processes that prioritize, I guess, hearing from diverse populations in a way that we haven’t done before, and so we need to really think about how we can make that happen,” she said. “This needs to be a priority because if people’s voices aren’t heard, then it’s not going to make the mapmaking process as inclusive as it needs to be.”
Cheri Quickmire, executive
The eight members of the state’s Reapportionment Committee, all state legislators, met for the first time in April. They spoke of the challenge of reaching as many people as possible and holding public hearings in each of the state’s five congressional districts, given ongoing concerns about COVID-19. Data released Thursday, Aug. 12 showed Connecticut’s white population dropped from 77.6% in 2010 to 66.4% in 2020, while the Hispanic or Latino population grew from 13.4% to 17.3%. The Black population grew from 10.1% to 10.8% and the Asian population grew from 3.8% to 4.8%.
Those figures do not include people of mixed race. Fairfield County is the most diverse of the state’s eight counties, with a white population of 61%. It’s followed closely by Hartford County, with a 61% white population, and New Haven County with 62.9%. Statewide, Connecticut had a slight overall population gain of 31,847 residents, from about 3.57 million people in 2010 to 3.6 million in 2020. Much of the growth came from Fairfield County, which gained 40,490 people. There were also small increases in Hartford and New Haven counties, while the other five counties lost pop-
ulation over the past decade. Connecticut has had a relatively stagnant population for the past several decades. Democratic Lt. Gov. Susan Bysiewicz, who chaired the state’s 2020 Complete Count Committee, said in a statement that she was encouraged by the data, noting Connecticut had a 99.9% overall response rate to the Census. “Today’s data shows the fruits of our labor,” she said. “By producing the most complete count possible, the 2020 census results will bring billions of dollars in federal resources to Connecticut for education, healthcare, transportation, and more.”

Kind kids
A group of local children came together recently to paint and distribute kindness rocks to help send a message of positivity and hope in the community. From left: Oliver Aingworth, Roman Maletta, Ryan Aingworth, Wes Maletta, and Whitney Aingworth.
Youngsters respond to hate by spreading love with a unique project By Nadya Korytnikova Town Times
When 8-year-old Ryan Aingworth saw racist writing in Middlefield’s Peckham Park, he felt it was up to him to spread a message of love and peace. So, together with his sister Whitney, brother Oliver and mother Kelly Aingworth, Ryan brought neighborhood kids together to paint kindness rocks.

“If people saw that writing, they’d be sad,” Ryan said of the park graffiti. “But if we put rocks around Connecticut, they would probably see them and think ‘Wow, who did this stuff?’”

The Aingworths set up a painting station near their home on Aug. 14, a sunny Saturday, and 13 children stopped by to decorate more than 100 rocks with the common theme of love, diversity, equality, and inclusion. “We felt there was some kind of fighting in our town and we felt like these rocks would be a little reminder that there's always going to be kindness in the world and you have to see it,” 10year-old Whitney said.
