Eames settling into new role
By Nicole Zappone Town Times
Back in July, Durham First Selectman Laura Francis resigned from her post to take a po sition with the South Central Region Coun cil of Governments.
Deciding who would step in as Durham’s first selectman took some time several weeks but on Aug. 26, Francis’ successor, fellow Republican George Eames, was sworn into office.
Eames has sat on Durham’s three-member Board of Selectmen since 2019, and will serve out the remainder of Francis’ term, which ends in December of 2023.
“It’s multiple hats, multiple purposes, and I’m good at that,” Eames said of his new role. “It’s a work in progress.”
“The town is really moving, and there are a lot of projects going on,” said Eames, who grew up in Durham and raised his family in town.

Finding positives in everyday moments
certainly not in that mo ment.
I can, to be sure, get a fullout case of the “grumblies,” and often.
This is a case of me waking up in the morning and grumbling, in my head, about this, that, and the oth er thing. I miss my boys, I have a sizeable bill coming up, I wonder what is going on with that back tooth, I am missing out on the grandma experience with my only grandchild in Sweden, yada yada. Poor me!
Those negative thoughts just line up, patiently waiting their turn. It’s not a good way to start the day. And those grumblies can sneak in periodically throughout the day, too. They just don’t want to leave me alone.
I have come to the conclu sion that this must cease and desist, the sooner the better. I would like to make my mind my friend instead of my nemesis. And the best way to do that, in my opin ion as well as the opinions of the so-called experts, is to live in a state of gratitude.
I decided to give it a try. Bit by bit. And you know, it works! I am realizing what a lucky lass I am.
Oh, there’s the big stuff, of course. My boys (and though they are far away, I am so fortunate to have them in the first place), my grandson, my home, my friends, my health, my car, a job that puts food on my table and keeps the lights on.
But I have begun to dig even deeper. The moment-to-mo
ment stuff, the stuff I might be tempted to overlook.
These days when I make my weekly visit to Stop & Shop, instead of grumbling about the high prices (well, I might grumble a little bit, but not quite as much), I give thanks that I have the resources to feed myself for the upcom ing week.
When I sit outside on a love ly, just-right day, reading and drinking green tea and watching the birds flit about, I really enjoy this time. This is my idea of paradise.
When I nestle in for the evening with my Samsung and find shows that I actual ly enjoy, all is right with the world.
When a bill is less than ex pected (I’d like to see this happen a bit more often), I am jumping for joy (well, on the inside anyway).
When my tires, all four of them, hold on to their prop er amount of air for the du ration of my drive (I have had a rash of deflated tires for some time now), I give a heartfelt shout-out to the Powers That Be that have or chestrated this mini-miracle.
When I eat my vegan mint chocolate chip frozen de light, instead of not paying it much mind, now I savor it. Truly savor.
When kitty Shiloh sleeps in the crook of my arm while I am watching TV, and when I go to bed at night and kitty Dakota snuggles with me, I wonder, “Does it get any bet ter than this?” It might, but
I have even stopped com plaining about summer be ing over and winter coming. It was to no avail anyway. I have come to the conclusion that the seasons do not give a farthing for my discontent, and will just keep right on rolling along, and I have made peace with that.
I have even stopped cursing the darkness clawing at my window when I get up at 5:00. The light will be back in due time. I can wait.
I recently met a delightful man at Danny’s Unlimited, here in Durham, while I was waiting for some work to be done on my car. I don’t know what kicked off this particular conversation,
but he said that Somebody is always looking out for him, and he is giving thanks all the time. And I gave thanks for him, for remind ing me of how I want to live my life.
Dare I say it? I think those grumblies are finally starting to loosen their grip on me. And for that I give a heartfelt thanks.

Approve early voting in Connecticut
By Diane Hoffman and Janice Elliott
This Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 8, Connecticut voters will see a question on their ballot asking them to ap prove a change to our State Constitution which would allow for early voting.
The question will be: Shall the Constitution of the State be amended to permit the General Assembly to provide for early voting? A “ yes ” vote will give the 2023 legislature the authority to start writing the laws to implement early voting. Early voting could then be an option for voters as early as 2024.
The League of Women Vot ers supports expanding vot ing options for everyone, and encourages a “ yes ” vote on the ballot question. With early voting, Connecticut voters would have the op tion to vote in-person at des ignated locations in advance of Election Day. This would provide voters with more flexibility to cast their ballots without worrying about whether or not they can make it to the polls on Elec tion Day due to challenges such as inflexible work
schedules, lack of childcare or transportation, or in clement weather. More broadly, it can increase over all voter turnout by provid ing for more days when vot ers can vote in person and make lines shorter at the polls on Election Day.
Connecticut is one of only four states that do not have early voting. Millions of vot ers throughout our country already have the right to cast their ballots early by voting in the days leading up to Election Day. The experience of these states has shown early voting to be safe and secure. The early votes are securely recorded, counted and stored, with the same checks and balances as those cast on Election Day.
Early voting is not the same as absentee ballot voting. Connecticut voters can only vote by absentee for very specific reasons, written in our State Constitution. Early voting would allow any voter to vote in person on a day besides Election Day for any reason. Absentee voting also involves additional steps for voters, first to complete and return a ballot application, and then to submit the bal lot itself.
States throughout our coun try are experiencing the ben efits of providing affordable, additional voting days, and so can Connecticut. The League of Women Voters urges residents to vote “ yes ” to increase access to the bal lot box for all eligible voters.

Re-elect Cohen
Editor:
I’m writing in support of the re-election of Christine Co hen as Durham’s State Sena tor. Christine has worked tirelessly in support of the residents and the town of Durham. She has many ac complishments, including being named Senate Chair of the Environment Committee and Vice Chair of the Com merce Committee.
Senator Cohen has used a balanced and thoughtful approach to our state bud get, focusing on economic issues facing our businesses big and small, and tax relief for residents and retirees. She worked to make changes that impact climate change, gun violence, and protecting women’s rights. Join me in supporting Christine Cohen!

Vote Fishbein
Editor:
Craig Fishbein has steadfast ly represented us in the leg islature by fighting for small er government, lower taxes and less interference in the daily affairs of law-abiding citizens. He has supported legislation concerning chil dren’s mental health, wom en’s health issues and opioid abuse. In addition, he has been at the forefront of ad
dressing juvenile crime and initiating public safety re forms. Connecticut is a bet ter place to live in because of Craig Fishbein. Next term, the residents of Middlefield will also have the ability to be represented by him. They join the fortunate. Vote for Craig Fishbein this Novem ber!
Paul Montgomery, Wallingford
Backing Parker
Editor:
John-Michael Parker de serves to be re-elected as Durham’s State Representa tive. During the last two years he has secured state funding for the Durham Public Library and the Durham town website. He voted for the balanced state budget, cutting $650 million in taxes including pension and annuity taxes. He led passage of an act to combat the opioid epidemic. Going forward he’s committed to investing in our schools, protecting our environment, defending reproductive rights and keeping Durham and Madison safe. Vote on Nov. 8 to re-elect JohnMichael Parker as our State Representative in the 101st District!
John Hogarth, Durham
Vote blue
Editor:
We have an indisputable choice on Nov. 8. The Democratic candidates sup port improving access to voting for all citizens and strengthening our democra cy at this time when it is most at risk.
Authoritarians around the world are gaining control and taking away peoples’ freedoms.
In America, we too are at risk.
Already, women’s rights to reproductive healthcare are nonexistent in many states. This is an issue of liberty,
economics and freedom. Women are protected, so far, in Connecticut, thanks to the Democrats.
Re-elect Governor Lamont, Senator Blumenthal, Senator Cohen, Representative Park er and the Democratic Team.

Replacing Francis
Just before Francis stepped down as first selectman, Eames, who was registered as an unaffiliated voter, switched his political affilia tion to Republican.
Per town charter, Eames and Selectman John Szewczyk, also a Republican, had 30 days to select Francis’ re placement. Because Francis is a Republican, that person would need to be a Republi can as well.
But Eames and Szewczyk could not come to a deci sion, so state statutes were looked to for guidance.
According to those guide lines, Francis’ replacement would be chosen by Durham’s five elected Re publican officers not serving staggered terms. Those five officials put forth two nomi nees, including Eames. The other withdrew from consid eration.
Looking forward Durham’s new first select man said the biggest project the town is focused on is turning the former Korn School into a community/ senior center. Also, Eames said, “We are looking to move the resident state trooper out of the fair house

and into the emergency ser vices operation center, which will be in the new building.”
Currently, an emergency
center is set up as needed on the third floor of Town Hall. Eames said a dedicated emergency center will mean a quicker response time.
Eames said he took on the role of first selectman to help make Durham a better place, and will not accept a salary for the position.

State farmers can apply for federal aid
Governor Ned Lamont an nounced this week that the U.S. Department of Agricul ture has approved his re quest to expand the natural disaster declaration that it recently approved for certain parts of Connecticut due to the drought that impacted the state this summer.
As a result, agricultural pro ducers in all eight of the state’s counties are now eli gible to be considered for as sistance from the Farm Ser vice Agency, such as emer gency loans, to offset the costs of production losses they experienced from the drought.
With the addition of this lat est declaration, Fairfield, Hartford, Litchfield, Middle sex, New London and Wind ham counties have each been designated as primary natural disaster areas due to the drought.
Those designations have re sulted in the state’s two re maining counties New
Haven and Tolland each being named as contiguous disaster counties. Farm op erators in both primary and contiguous counties are eli gible for assistance.
“With this latest declaration from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the entirety of Connecticut is now covered under this natural disaster designation, allowing farm ers in all eight of our coun ties to seek emergency assis tance stemming from their
production losses due to the drought,” Lamont said.
“Agricultural producers sup port thousands of jobs in Connecticut and are a criti cal component of our econ omy. I strongly encourage any farmer operators in Connecticut that experi enced losses because of the drought to reach out to their local Farm Service Agency office for information on as sistance that may be avail able. I appreciate Secretary
Vilsack and the Biden ad ministration for expanding their declaration and sup porting Connecticut’s agri cultural industry.”
“Drought conditions hurt farmers across the state this summer, ” Connecticut Agri culture Commissioner Bryan P. Hurlburt said. “The recent rainfall has alleviated water concerns for producers but doesn’t bring back crops that were lost or significantly impacted with reduced
yields. The disaster declara tion provides a pathway for assistance, and we encour age producers to contact their local Farm Service Agency office for more guid ance. ”
Farmer operators interested in applying for assistance must contact the local Farm Service Agency office for their region. Farmers have eight months from the date of the declaration to apply for assistance.
