COZY CORNER Haley and Kevin Fischer, of Middletown, pose with their 4-year-old son Axton at Lyman Orchards in Middlefield on Tuesday, Oct. 6. Kevin Fischer surprised his son in the corn maze after 14 months deployed with the Army. Photo by Bailey Wright, Record-Journal

Soldier surprises son after 14-month deployment in Iraq MIDDLEFIELD — In the suspenseful moments leading up to Kevin Fischer’s reunion with his son Axton there were nerves. “It's pretty exciting but I'm also nervous,” Fischer said the afternoon of Tuesday, Oct. 6. “I hope he remembers me. I mean, I'm sure he will, but it's just kind of nerve-racking.” When the two finally met in the corn maze at Lyman Orchards, Axton paused next to his mom Haley Fischer before walking slowly to hug his father.

The two embraced for the first time in 14 months, since Fischer was deployed in Iraq with the 25th Infantry Division of the U.S. Army. After removing his mask mid-hug, Axton had a big smile as he stayed in his dad’s arms and took some photos. After arriving back in the state the previous evening, Fischer was picked up by his wife and they were able to spend time together before surprising their son the next day. As Middletown natives, Haley Fischer said the three of them are very familiar with Lyman Orchards and love to

visit. It felt like a great meeting place to surprise Axton while a handful of family and friends joined them. While Kevin Fischer was deployed, Haley and Axton lived in Middletown with her parents. They will return to their posting in Oklahoma soon. Now that they’re reunited, the couple said they are most excited to catch up on lost time. Axton and Haley both said they can’t wait to return to hiking as a family. “It’s nice to be able to have somebody to make memories with again,” Haley Fischer said.

Letters to the Editor Backing Kokoruda

Vote Parker

Editor :

Editor :

The candidate who has the experience, knowledge, influence and ability to ensure Madison and Durham residents receive the best outcome from the State Capitol is Noreen Kokoruda, who has worked tirelessly for these towns. Noreen understands town issues after serving on the Madison Board of Selectmen for 14 years. She has extraordinary influence at the Capitol, serving on General Assembly Committees for Children, Education and Appropriations. All of these are important issues for our towns. We think all of us want to see legislators work together to solve problems and not blindly follow their party platform.

It should come as no surprise, but these next few years are going to be very difficult in this state. The damage caused by this pandemic will have far-reaching consequences on our budget, our state’s support systems, and our daily lives.

and experienced not only in business, but also in serving Middlefield’s local government. Vote Mike Skelps to get Connecticut back on track! Luis Cruz

Thanks Editor : Thanks to Middlefield & Durham residents who supported our September food drive. A total of 151.9 pounds of food was donated through our drop boxes in the lobbies at the Levi Coe and Durham libraries. We are grateful for all donations received! The bounty was distributed to the food pantries in Middlefield & Durham. This opportunity to help our neighbors in need was made possible by the generous cooperation of the directors of the libraries, who allowed us to place the collection boxes in their lobbies. Thank you, Jess & Christine! Grace, Kayla, Charlotte, Jenna and Maddie, Girl Scout Troop 62115

Turn Durham blue Editor : Durham’s voter list reveals the following: Democrat 1,406, Republican 1,571, Unaffiliated - 2,243. The trend of voter affiliations has progressively changed during the four years of my residency. This data restores my vision of hope for the future of this town, state and country. Your country needs more hope at this arduous time. “Hope” is the motto of the Biden-Harris ticket! The perception that Durham has been affiliated as one political party’s stronghold is not the case. Unaffiliated voters of Durham, you are the majority. Vote Biden-Harris. Turn Durham blue for Election 2020! Bob Donahue

Vote the common good Editor : I feel fortunate to live in a state which leads in responding to the COVID19 epidemic because our leaders listen to the experts and collaborate. This November we need to support candidates who put the common good first, candi-

dates with priorities which strengthen education, healthcare and economic development while protecting the environment for future generations. Please join me in voting for state Sen. Christine Cohen, state representative candidate John-Michael Parker, and the entire Democratic ticket. Pam Hogarth

Our champion in Hartford Editor : It was a difficult decision to retire as your state senator, but one made much easier seeing Paul Cicarella become a candidate to represent our great district in Hartford. Paul Cicarella has my full support in running for state senate. He is the most capable, hardworking and passionate candidate to represent our community. He is a father, small business owner, coach and community volunteer who has the energy and the vision we need to improve our state and make sure the needs of people in our district are heard loud and clear. He will be an unparalleled champion and voice for us all in Hartford. State Sen. Len Fasano See Letters, A20

Candidates square off in Quinnipiac Chamber forum

Obituaries

By Devin Leith-Yessian Record-Journal staff

WALLINGFORD — Candidates focused on the economy, workers and the state budget while responding to questions during a forum hosted by the Quinnipiac and Greater New Haven chambers of commerce.

Angelo P. Micciulla, Jr. Donald W. Edwardson, MIDDLEFIELD- Angelo M.D. DURHAM- Dr. Donald W. Edwardson, 72, of Durham, died Monday September 28, 2020 at Middlesex Hospital. He was born in Jacksonville, FL, the son of Edward and Mildred Smucygz. Donald was a psychiatrist, most recently practicing at Waterbury Hospital. He is survived by his son, Dan Edwardson of Durham; a brother and two sisters. Funeral services and burial are private. There are no calling hours. Those who wish may send donations via GoFundMe at gf.me/u/ y3chty. To share memories or express condolences online please visit www. biegafuneralhome.com.

The virtual forum, held Thursday, Oct. 8, featured candidates in the 85th, 86th, 87th and 90th House of Representatives races and the 34th State Senate contest. Democrats Vincent Mase and Kathy Grant, who are running for the 86th and 87th House seats, were unable to attend, while April Capone, who is running for the 34th Senate district, declined to participate, according to moderator Garrett Sheehan. Voters unsure of which district they reside in can enter their address into a portal on the General Assembly’s website. Solutions to protecting those who have been unable to work during the economic shutdown caused by the pandemic included workforce development and retraining, pressing the federal government to extend enhanced unemployment benefits and reducing professional licensing requirements. Mary Mushinsky, a Democrat running to retain her 85th House seat, championed using the state Platform to Employment program to help unemployed workers enter industries not as harshly impacted by the

lockdown. She also called for extending expired federal unemployment benefits, saying that many jobs may not return until a vaccine has been developed. “There’s certain sectors I don't think are going to recover quickly until we have a vaccine … They're just not going to recover until people feel safe to move around,” she said. David Yaccarino, the Republican incumbent in the 87th House race, said that business owners and employees shouldn’t have to leave careers they’ve built for themselves because of the pandemic. Instead, he suggested lowering taxes and streamlining bureaucracy. He added that it can take as long as 80 days for a prospective employee to obtain the necessary licensing to work.

Candidates were in favor of the state providing some liability protections for businesses bringing workers back into offices and storefronts, with Republican Craig Fishbein, an incumbent running for the 90th House district, mentioning that there are discussions around using the worker’s compensation program to administer it. Fishbein also criticized the impact the economic shutdown is having on local businesses, saying a client of his law firm is a restaurant being evicted while not being able to operate at full capacity. Platform: The cost of living in Connecticut has become too expensive in large part because of state government policy. This is reflected in the tax burden and in our electricity costs, which are inflated by energy politics. Eversource must be held accountable and the budget balanced without tolls and tax increases. Other: Endorsed by the Independent Party. Electricity costs have become

outrageous. Eversource charges the highest electricity costs in the continental U.S. and the difference is substantial — more than 80% above the national average. Eversource and its $19 million/year president must be brought under control and state energy policy that inflates electricity costs reconsidered and rescinded. His Democratic opponent, Jim Jinks, said it’s an appro-

“It’s right for us to be moving into phase three at this point … I'm in agreement with where things are heading,” he said.

Ulbrich also called for renegotiating state employees’ benefit plans to move towards health savings accounts and 401k plans over pensions. Mushinsky said the pandemic has already revealed ways that government can operate using the internet, which can lead to future streamlining after the pandemic has passed. She also suggested using countywide accounting systems and consolidating some municipal operations, such as emergency services dispatch centers. States as large as California only have three such centers, she said, while Connecticut has 52.

Drivers who are ticketed for this violation can be fined $150 for a first offense, $300 for a second offense and $500 for third and subsequent offenses. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2018, 2,841 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers.
