Haunt nabs supplies for Middlefield Food Pantry

The past several autumns, the Sass family of Rockfall has gone above and beyond when it comes to decorating for Halloween. “Every year we just started adding more and more and get ting bigger and bigger,” said Julie Sass, who re sides at 145 Ross Road.

And, for many, the Sass’ yard has become a mustsee during the spooky season.

With so many people stopping by to view the out door Halloween set-up each October, the Sass family decided to combine its love of the holiday with its love of the community.

Now, the Sass’ use the annual attraction to gener ate nonperishable food items and cleaning prod ucts for the Middlefield Food Pantry. Visitors to

Hard at work

Editor:

The CRHS Project Gradua tion committee is already hard at work planning for the 2023 graduation. For those who don't know, we are a group of parent volun teers (many of whom no longer have children at CRHS) who plan a safe, in clusive, fun-filled event the night of graduation. The graduating seniors depart CRHS and head to CT Sport sPlex for a night of games, food and dancing. The tradi tion started in 1990 and we are proud to have continued this important event.

We are asking for new mem bers to join our committee and junior parents willing to chaperone the event. We are also seeking a sponsor to supply T-shirts for the grad uates, which are worn at the event and treasured as their last CRHS memory. Please contact me at jczdpa@ya hoo.com if you are able to help us with any of these needs. We sincerely appreci ate your support.

Re-elect Parker

Editor:

Please support John-Michael Parker for state representa tive in November’s election.

John-Michael is an energet ic, committed supporter of his constituents in Durham and Madison. Since his elec tion in 2020, he has proven to be an advocate for the needs and wishes of our community while also sup porting our state budget that lowers taxes and balances the budget.

In addition, John-Michael is a unifier, as he reaches across the aisle to address the issues that are critical to

our community. For exam ple, John-Michael led the passage of opiate legislation that passed this past May with unanimous bipartisan support. Please vote JohnMichael Parker in November!

Vote for Hyland

Editor:

Rebecca Hyland is the Democratic candidate for State Representative in Wall ingford and Middlefield. Her support for family and com mon-sense laws make her an ideal lawmaker.

For the past six years, her opponent, Craig Fishbein, went against CT leaders when it came to school mask mandates and fingerprinting for gun purchases.

This district has a reputation for Yankee practicality. Vote for a moderate legislator who can see both sides.

He’s not for us

Political signs are every where. One reads "Re-elect John Michael Parker." Parker supposedly represents Madi son/Durham, but one of his mailers is titled "Millions for Madison"? With assistance from Parker, Madison re ceived over $4 million in state aid. How much for Durham?

Parker seems more con cerned with social issues than with seniors’ ability to heat their homes this winter. People are struggling while Parker co-sponsors HB6515, which prohibits discrimina tion based upon hairstyle.

This Yale-educated Madison resident doesn’t really repre sent Durham at all. We can do better.

Letters to the Editor

Vote them out

It's amazing that the very people who drive a company onto the rocks expect share holders to allow them to continue driving when they should be fired and shown the door. We are seeing this scenario in today's politics. The very people whose poli cies have led to the highest rate of inflation in decades, increases in energy, gas, food and heating prices, along with an open southern border, an increased crime rate and shrinking retire ment accounts are expecting to return to Washington, D.C. to continue this reck lessness. Given the current situation, I find it impossible to vote for any incumbent this November.

Backs Rasimas

Editor:

Folks in CT’s 101st House District, (Durham/Madison), have a real choice on Nov. 8. John Rasimas, CPA, recently retired Chief State Auditor, is running for that seat on the Republican ticket. John is a fiscal conservative and social moderate who seeks to serve

our community in the House of Representatives through the pursuit of fiscal account ability, juvenile justice re form and the restoration of the state’s diminishing sup port of RSD13.

Please vote for John Rasimas as our State Representative.

She later worked as Assistant Tax Collector for the Town of Durham and retired from Lake Grove at Durham. Marie chaperoned almost every field trip that her children attended. She bowled in many leagues over the 60 plus years bowling in East Haven, Wallingford, and Berlin, as well as in tournaments both in and out of the state. Marie and her friends comprised the Country Maids homemaker group where they made crafts and enjoyed each other’s company. She had a good time with the

Scarlett O’Hattas Red Hat group and the monthly Friday night poker game. Marie loved angels and decorated her tree entirely of angels every Christmas. Memories of making and decorating cookies every Christmas with her children will live forever with them. Trips to the casino, Florida to see her brothers, and local trips were shared with Walt. Marie called her trip with Marybeth to Italy the “trip of a lifetime”. She was an avid fan of the UCONN Women’s basketball team and rarely missed watching a game. She loved the NY Yankees after becoming a late in life fan from watching games with Walt.

The family thanks the Regency House staff for their caring and support they showed Marie and the family.

Connecticut’s Newest College Now Accepting Applications

On October 1, Connecticut State Community College began accepting applications for the Fall 2023 semes ter. CT State, as it is more commonly known, is the result of the pending consolidation of Connecticut’s 12 community colleges. The merger will become official July 1, 2023.

Students can apply online and choose any CT State location. Classes will be held on campus, online or as hybrids for maximum flexibility when design ing a course schedule. Services for students will also be available both in person and virtually.

“We are excited to welcome the first CT State students, both those new to our campuses and the thousands returning in the fall. This new college – whose foundations are built on over 60 years of academic excellence and student success delivered by the best community college system in the nation – will help Connecticut’s resi dents achieve their educational goals, while meeting the state’s workforce needs,” said Middlesex Community College Interim CEO Kimberly A. Hogan.

Connecticut’s 12 community colleges serve approximately 60,000 students a year. As one institution, CT State will be the largest community college in New England and one of the largest in the nation, as well as the leading provider of higher education in Con necticut.

Students will have access to all the programs, services and support that

are available today but will benefit from access to classes on any campus without having to reapply or trans fer. Aligned statewide programs also means that prerequisites and courses required to earn certificates and asso ciate degrees are consistent.

Access to free community college through PACT will continue to be available to Connecticut high school graduates who have never attended college before. Accessing PACT and financial aid start with completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid at FAFSA.gov. (Students planning to start in Fall 2023 should use school code 007635.)

CT State will continue to offer a full array of non-credit programs and classes for personal and professional development at its many campuses. Additionally, students can enjoy lec tures, readings, concerts, intramurals and other student and community enrichment activities.

Each of the 12 CT State campuses have dedicated admissions, financial aid and advising staff that can help students navigate the enrollment pro cess. Assistance is available in person, online or on each location’s website.
